  1. With my RAAF Mk VIII A58-303 waiting for serial numbers (due tomorrow) and the RAAF 451 Squadron Mk XIV at the painting stage, I decided to take on another RAAF subject. This time to convert the Airfix 1/48 Vb to a Vc standard and use the DK decal sheet. The chosen subject is an early Australian Vc BS219 (Australian serial A58-84) the top one on the decal sheet. A number of things influenced this decision besides the general enthusiasm for anything Spitfire: 1. I have had a RAAF Vc on the modelling bucket list for some time 2. There is good information on this aircraft and an excellent description by Peter Malone @Magpie22 in his Aeroscale decal sheet review on Hyperscale http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/raafvcpm_1.htm, I have to see if Peter has done a review of the DK sheet. He immediately answered a question in my head - did the RAAF Vc have the IFF fitted? The answer is no. I have to even drill out the fuselage insulator. 3. I like the Jiminy Cricket motif. By the way, if you prefer the bottom right motif there is good info on this aircraft being the recovered and restored wreck A58-146 EE853. The following article is interesting reading http://www.saam.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/SAAM-Profiles-RECOVERY-OF-SPITFIRE-UP-O.pdf and finally, 4. This aircraft may of had the early Vc wide cannon blisters. Not being the Spitfire expert, I am now checking whether this means that I can use the cannon blister position size and location on the Airfix Vb wing. This will be one less correction. Please respond if you know the answer. Maybe @Troy Smith can chime in. (EDIT: answered my own question - I will need to make a wide cannon blister.).You can see I am already using my Mk XIV build to make a narrow blister mould in anticipation of this modification. I know the XIV has the outboard cannon and very slightly larger blister, rear mounted, but it will be good basis for the Vb to Vc mod if the narrow blister is needed. Here's the decal sheet, it shows the squadron codes "ZP" in DK's interpretation of RAAF Sky Blue and the aircraft "X" in white. I need to check references if this is correct. Also DK has the underside in Azure Blue as opposed to RAAF Sky Blue, possibly correct for an early Aussie Vc. I have ordered the Airfix kit which should arrive with good timing on completion of the Mk XIV. I'll then post the obligatory sprue shots. In the mean time, the fun part, more desk top research on this particular aircraft. Any input is welcome. Another Spitfire, surely the last for a while. I'll have 4 to get home to Australia in hand carry. Ray
  2. I am just about to launch into my conversion of the Airfix 1/48 Vb into an early Vc (RAAF Aircraft). It seems a fairly straightforward and reasonably easy conversion. Special thanks to @Troy Smith for the suggestion. I have read a number of excellent BM threads on the subject of Vb to Vc conversion including some great input from, but not limited to, @Graham Boak@Magpie22@Giorgio N@Troy Smith@gingerbob and, of course, the late great Edgar Brooks. I have also perused other links like the Spitfire Site and its often visited "Concise Guide to Spitfire wings" http://spitfiresite.com/2010/04/concise-guide-to-spitfire-wing-types.html. et.al. I have now put together my list of what is required including some questions that are not clear. What have I missed? Top Wing Half 1. Remove external wing strengtheners 2. Remove wheel well blisters and repair. 3. Fill domed wheel well (upper wing blister) and provide new ribbing to match C-Wing. 4. Remove cannon blisters and repair. 5. Remove inboard machine gun detail and relocate between ribs 13 and 14. 6. Fill all unnecessary panel lines. 7. Re-scribe new panel lines in accordance with C-Wing including new panel for early wide cannon blister and relocated inboard machine guns. Check and include any new access hatches. 8. Fit wide cannon blister (CHECK: my subject has the early wide blister) Bottom Wing Half 9. Remove underwing cannon blisters and repair. 10. Add cannon ejection ports and panel detail. CHECK: New trailing small blister in cannon access panel in C-Wing. Include if required. 11. Fill link and case ejection port for inboard machine gun in old B-Wing position and include in new C-Wing position. 12. CHECK: Do Airfix provide landing lights to be removed? 13. Re-scribe panels. Check and include any new access hatches. Complete Wing 14. Fill old inboard machine gun position and drill outboard new position. 15. Replace tapered cannons housings with taper and cylindrical type and fit. 16. Fit outboard second cannon position stubs. Other Stuff 17. Rake undercarriage legs forward by 2” EDIT: @Graham Boak commented - The undercarriage change is described in Spitfire the History (in the chapter on the Mk.III) as being a movement forward of 2 inches at the axle 18. Fit bulged undercarriage doors. 19. CHECK: Strengthened undercarriage, what does this mean? 20. CHECK: Does Airfix include the larger round oil cooler? 21. EDIT: @Graham Boak commented: The Mk.Vc also introduced the revised windscreen with the inset armour glass. This was seen on Mk.Vb late in production. It had a straight interface with the fuselage rather than curved. 22. EDIT: Check your references for correct Propeller and Spinner @Troy Smith has given a good explanation and links further down in this thread RAAF 79 Squadron BS219 23. Wide cannon blister. No evidence of any other blisters on upper wing. 24. No pilot head rest. 25. Exhaust gun heating tube removed. Hole in cowling remains. I am modelling how the aircraft looked in March/April 1943. 26. IFF included. Thanks in advance for any input. Soon I'll start a WIP of these changes. This can be found here: Ray
  3. Strarting the GB with this kit. Reduced from 16.99 to 10.00 at model shop last Dec, I should have waited another week for the Airfix Black Friday sale. For anyone else building this kit, you may not have noticed that Edgar Brooks is credited in the instructions, for assisting Airfix with the kit. I'm building this option. Having previously built Green/Brown, Green/Grey, Desert Spitfires - this scheme is unique and fascinating to me. Parts. Decals. For those with good eyesight, you can see where I've underlined Edgar's credit on the instructions. Now to wait for the off. Longest wait in the world for the scramble.
