  1. Second completed build of the year, the Special Hobby Ki-43 Oscar. This has a somewhat amusing - now, from a distance - history, as my Oscar build was intended to be the AML version, which came with resin parts, etch and vac form canopies. Unfortunately the kit turned out to be one of those that exceeded my modelling skills - such as they are - and due to some fit issues - of mega proportions - I reluctantly abandoned the kit. Which was a shame, as I wanted to use the AML kits' unusual paint scheme and decals supplied, a red brown upper surfaces over a grey undersurface, instead of the usual Japanese gree/mottled/ nmf scemes Japanese aircraft kits seem to come in. Here's the AML painting instructions; Then out of the blue for me at least, Special Hobby re released their 1/72 Oscar in in "Japan's Allies" markings, but crucially with a dual fuselage and exhausts for the both the Ki-43 III ko version, ie the AML version, as well as the cowlings with the single exhausts for the Ki-43 II version used by the "Japanese allies". Enthused, the Big H were duly ordered to supply one such Special Hobby Kit (in exchange for coin of the realm, of course) which arrived before Christmas. Hmmmm, thought I when fondling plastic, isn't this the AML kit re boxed without the resin, - or the AML kit was the Special Hobby kit reboxed? Further checking revealed neither was the case, and preparatory work was done - painting as much as possible on the sprue, etc., before New Year's Day, in tandem with the Revell 1/72 V2 rocket I made between Christmas and New Year. Once I began putting it together, oh dear, some fit issues again, again with the cowling, but nothing this time that couldn't be solved. Eventually. Now my experience with Special Hobby has been varied - ranging from the "it went together fairly well" (10) to "What the &*%*^&&&*&%^$"£ is going on here! (0)" but this one was more a 5. In other words, it needs some modelling skills. That pleased me because it meant I must have some!! There is a build of this model in the supplied Thai air force scheme in a recent issue of Airfix Model World magazine which I found interesting if not terrifically helpful. So here's the Special Hobby Ki-43 III Oscar in the AML paint scheme. I used the AML decals to go with the paint scheme. They weren't very good. In fact, the hinomaru were - let's say, not good at all. However, with some micro sol and micro set, gentle persuasion with a paint brush, they went on in the end. I only had to paint over tears in two hinomaru. Paints by Tamiya, Revell and Mr Color. My biggest disappointment was the Mr Color red brown was far more of a chocolate brown, ie it wasn't the right color.. I decided to leave the paint as it was and look for a different brand paint in that red brown colour for future use. Out of interest, I put the 5 Japanese fighter kits I've made together for this photo; clockwise from top left they are the RS models Ki-87, Hasegawa Ki-61 Tony, Special Hobby Ki-43 Oscar, Hasegawa J7W1, and Hasegawa Ki-44 Tojo. I was quite surprised to see how small the Ki-43, Ki-44 and Ki-61 are compared to the J7W1 and Ki-87. The Ki-87 never got to the prototype stage, though I am pretty sure at least one J7W1 prototype flew, but looking at them, I am still not convinced that the Ki-87 is actually a 1/48th kit mislabelled as a 1/72! Thanks for looking.
  2. Hello, my name is Torbjorn and I am a serial starter. Tonight I’d like to contribute with this one: I hadn’t heard if the kit maker, but it reminds me of Special Hobby - the box contains two sprues of short-run-looking styrene, an array of resin and a PE sheet containing cockpit details and landing gear doors (very nice!). Resin and metal - in addition there is a resin spinner, which I forgot to add. A vacu-formed windshield would have been nice since the cockpit is open, but you can’t have everything. Decals for four options are included, all viable in the GB: two Italian operating in Albania and two Axis Croat. I will probably make the one chasing a Greek Gladiator on the box cover, but it differs from the instructions where the fasces insignia do not have white backgrounds so some reaearch is required. Time is running short so I’ve started already. The kit contains a surprise for those who read the instructions: it contains some extra parts not shown in the instruction, for example the PE pedals. My guess on how to add them:
  3. Dear fellow Britmodellers, this is my 1/72 AZ Model Bf-109 G10/R2 in markings of Nahaufklärungsgruppe (short-range recce group) 14. Painted with Mr.Hobby acrylics. Photos by Wolfgang Rabel. "Black 12" was photographed by US Troops at Fürth airfield in May 1945. Color pictures of this aircraft are featured in the MMP book "Bf 109 Late Versions". I tried to replicate the complex camo scheme the best I could. The AZ Model kit (WNF factory) contains the decals, but not the camera housing on the lower fuselage. I used a resin part from AML (#72068). Photo-etch from Brengun, pitot tube and guns from Master. Vacu canopy from Rob Taurus, exhausts from Res-Im. Thank you for your interest! Best greetings from Vienna. Roman
  4. #27/2020 Newest model by my dad. Hasegawa kit, decals from the kit, Kagero and AML, EZ Line for the antenna wire, shortened the too long legs some mm to receive a more realistic look,, plastic rods and lead wire for the brake lines, Eduard seatbelts, painted with MRP RLM 76/75/81/83. Kagero Topcolors #9 and JaPo Messerschmitt 109 of JG52 in Deutsch Brod used as reference. Build thread here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235082275-end-of-war148-messerschmitt-bf109k-4-iiijg52/ Aircraft flown by Hauptmann Adolf Borchers, III./JG52, Deutsch Brod/Czechoslovakia in May 1945. 5. Hi all... ...trying to mask my 1/72 Academy Tempest V using the AML camo mask. However from the pic below I cant get the correct alignment of the nose mask sections which are in two halves. Has anyone runt into probs with AML masks before or I'm I doing something totally wrong? The mask is AMLM 73 012 1/72 scale Hawker Tempest Mk.V so should match my kit? Ta in advance
  6. #30/2019 Most probably the last new one by my dad for 2019. Started with an ICM kit but switched to a Hasegawa kit with decals from AML, superfabric seatbelts from Eduard, painted with Gunze H306 FS36270 for the underside and Tamiya XF-82 RAF Ocean Gray 2 and XF-81 RAF Dark Green 2. Used darker shades of these colours to simulate freshly overpainted RAF roundels on the wings. Build thread here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235061874-lend-lease148-supermarine-spitfire-lfixe-soviet-airforcepvo/page/2/ The model shows an aircraft of 26 GIAP PVO, Leningrad 1944-45. 8. Dear all, I decided yesterday to try a quick build here... it is a sharkmouth, no? so hope it counts! that is what I have: Italeri Mirage F1 in 1/48 with mission mark decals (unfortuantely out of production.. ) I want to do Mirage F1 CR 118-NQ that took part in Balic Air Policing missions in 2013 lots of aftermarket stuff, only som of it will/can be used here: this is the nice sharkmouth and Iraqi banana tank: https://cdn.jetphotos.com/full/3/24539_1390505379.jpg hope it turns out in time! cheers, Werner
  9. This is not a kit for the beginner, which is a shame as I don't know of any other small scale 2 seat zero kits around. The injected molded parts suffer from severe mold misalignment to the point where manufacturers had to include resin tail plane and other small pieces as the injected parts were junk. What they should have done was retooled the kit and made sure the parts were molded better. I built this model for a friend and fortunately he didn't want the aircraft in a target towing set up, because much of the tow gear was so badly molded it was unusable. Even so, the rear fuselage insert doesn't fit and that was built up with super glue and sprue. The nose and cowling are a mess, but I managed to carve out something that looks like a zero nose from the globs of plastic. The photo etch for the gear bays had to be trimmed to fit, but it wasn't too bad. Fortunately the vac formed canopy is nicely done and the decals are quite good. If you really want a 2 seat Zero in 1/72, I would suggest buying this kit and taking out the canopy, second cockpit, decals and if you must some of the towing and winch gear and grafting it onto the Airfix Zero. That said, I'm quite pleased with the end result of my hacking and sanding!
  10. Dassault Mirage IIIC No.58 / 2-LK EC 3/2 ‘Alsace’, Dijon-Longvic, 1966 This is another one of those long-awaited builds inspired by a Coltishall Battle of Britain ‘at home day’ in the 1960s. This was the first time I had seen a Mirage III in the flesh. Two were there at the 1966 open day, namely No.89 / 2-LE and No.58 / 2-LK which is the subject of this model. In those days I could only do small, square format black and white photography, and this is my valued photo that I took on that day 17th September 1966 : The basic kit was the AML Mirage IIIC, which looked OK in the box but was actually a real struggle to build. I won’t go into details but anyone who’s attempted a short run AML kit with resin and photo etch will know what it’s like. Anyway I finished it at last and here it is. The other Mirages in the pics are IIIEs, one from the HPM kit (13-PP) and the other an old Heller kit (3-JN) which I have posted before. Finish on all of them was AK Extreme Metal polished aluminium with a brushed coat of Klear, with various panels in mixtures of light grey, aluminium and medium sea grey. ←
  11. Hi everyone My Spitfire build is coming to an end so its time to think about my next project. I do have a Hurricane,Typhoon and Jet Provost to finish but I've wanted to build a Halifax for a long time now so I thought sod it, lets go for it! I've chosen the Revell offering as my starting point, I know it has its issues (hence the correction set from AML) but hopefully I should be able to produce a decent model to add to my small collection. Here's an overall shot of the Kit and after market... Thanks for looking and see you soon. Iain
  12. AML is to release a 1/72nd Dassault Mirage IIIB/BJ kit - ref. 13. She is finished finally! tried to be ready before the new highly awaited Kinetic wonder! I especially like the AML exhaust! Iwill buy more from them in the future! (they released a pair for the Heller Mirage IV as well recently!!! ) it is looking cool, no? sunset was already some years ago for Brazilian Mirages! first the IIIs and later the stopgap 2000B/C (till what exactly? Gripen E in some years time!!) the in progress can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234966501-mirage-iiiebr-148-aztec-decals-on/?hl=mirage thanks for comments!
  14. One cannot have enough started kits I think,,,,, while one is drying, youcan always sand some parts, or rescribe something, or else,,, so I decided to do another Mirage with canards, this time it is set to be a Mirage IIIEBR of the Brazilian Airforce (FAB), or F-103E as they used to call them the kit will be the ancient ESCI/ Italeri kit for an Mirage IIIE, still mor or less the only choice out of the box. As I bought a Neomega resin cockpit once for it and also got an AML exhaust nozzle, I really wanted to build it once.... so here it is.... parts are already partially rescribed, the raised lines were quite crude. (as is my rescribing for the moment...) Resin parts are cleaned and dry fitted, so far so good! here some pics: hope it turns out at least somehow decent!! Werner
  15. Finished this one today for a group build over on another forum, based around the Lend Lease program. What ive built is the Airfix Hurricane IIc kit but ive used the 3d Kits conversion to convert it in to a IID. Ive also used AML decals to do a nice russain scheme for the model. The kit itself is a lovely kit and just falls together, the only big down side is the small prop. The 3d Kits conversion is nice simple to use and is nicely detailed, i would well recommend it to anyone. The AML decals were lovely to use to. I used humbrol and revell paints through out. Overall it was an easy build and im really happy with the finshed product. Enjoy, Tom
