  1. This is the Special Hobby Westland Whirlwind fighter that I finished earlier this year. The Whirlwind is fairly well known despite the small number built (114) and equipping only two squadrons and it was an aircraft that potentially could have been more successful but seemed to suffer from a number of 'misfortunes' that were out of the hands of Westlands. the kit is from 2010 and is a mix of injection moulded plastic, resin and photo etch. Mine was built out of the box and seemed to go together reasonably well, although the wings needed some thinning down at the trailing edge and some filler was used on the wing roots and tailplanes. There is good cockpit detail, but the canopy comes in one piece, not that bothered me as I usually build with closed canopies anyway. The aircraft is from 263 Sqn in the early part of 1941. Paints are Xtracrlyix except for the spinners and fuselage band which are from Vallejo. The decals are from the kit and went on with few problems. The surface detail is quite good, but I photographed the model in bright sunshine and some detail has been lost I hope you like the model.
  2. I have an old Humbrol issue of the Heller 1/72 Gladiator Mk1/II. The box art features N5908 FoHE with blue spinner, cowling and rudder. I suspect the wheel covers when fitted would have been blue too. A trawl through Google has only thrown up photos of the restored N5641 GoHE in a museum in Norway with those markings. (Including an interesting on this forum from a while ago.) My question is did these aircraft, so hurriedly deployed to Norway, actually have the blue applied to their various bits? The 2 or 3 books on Gladdies that I have offer no clues. I'd like to do this scheme but prefer confirmation which photos of a restored museum aircraft doesnt really provide. Also whether the camo was in the 4 shades scheme or simply DG/DE and what style was the undersides...B/W, B/W/S or sky grey etc. Thanks in advance. BTW the skis will come in handy on another kit
  3. Finally finished my fourth Hunter of the year. As per the previous 3 it's made from the Revell 72nd scale kit but this time back-dated to an F.5 Initial plan was to finish this one as a 34 Sqn machine but checked my references too late into the build and realised the one I had decals for didn't carry the link collector bulges under the cockpit so second choice was a 263 Sqn machine. Decals came from an Xtradecal sheet for F.6s suitably modified and supplemented with Modeldecal serial codes. a little extra detail was added to the cockpit and undercarriage, Backdating to an F.5 includes removing the wing leading edge dog-tooth, changing the mid-fuselage vents, adjusting the airbrake proportions, then reducing the tailpipe diameter, Also added the wing tip and tail fairing tip lights from clear plastic. The Hunter fascination will continue next year with at least two planned for GBs
