  1. I've had my current 3d printer for around 6 months & have now got it tuned to the point that I feel confident to tackle a large project. I'm going to try to build a model of Discovery - the deeps space ship that appears in 2001 A Space Odyssey. I found the 3d model on thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:950664 The scale is approximately 160:1 & when built is should measure just over a metre long. The printer is a Geeetech A10 & I'm using Eryone PLA filament. The first parts I've printed are the engines & a handful of the pods that make up the long section of the body. I guess that it's going to take me to the end of next month to print all the parts & I hope to have the whole thing complete before the end of the year. Here's a picture of the first few bits:
  2. When I saw one of the guys in our club bring along a beautifully made model of this subject, I knew I had to make one for myself. At the time, it was a bit hard to get locally so I had to order it along with the "missing" Pan Am decals. The spacecraft is the instantly recognisable Orion Clipper from the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey. I saw this movie as a boy and the early space sequences were breathtaking. Some of the latter parts of the movie on the other hand were extremely disorienting. The kit went together pretty well though it does have a few sink marks near the wing leading edge requiring attention. The after market Pan Am decals didn't come with any placement instructions and there were a lot of items I didn't use. I had to browse various images on the web and rewatch the movie to get a better idea of placement and even then I'm not sure of the underwing Pan Am markings. The clipper isn't in the movie for long and the master was one of the models destroyed on order by Stanley Kubrick. Cheers Michael
  3. Hello everyone, Here is my next project ... building the USS Discovery from 2001 A Space Odyssey. The kit is a mixed resin and white metal kit by Pahser (although on the box it says Made by Reshape). I've never heard of this make before. Has anyone come across Pahser kits before? When built the Discovery should be about 12 inches long. On the instructions, the scale is stated as 1/550 ... which would make the real Discovery 550 feet long (some estimates put the length at 700 feet so it's in the same ball park). Can't really expect too much fine detail on a kit of this scale. There is some good detail on the engine block ... but poor mould lines and resin bubbles, flash etc on the command module. There is a brass tube that forms the back bone of the ship upon which the containers (30 of them) are glued onto supporting rings (30 rings). Again a bit of white metal flash here and there but nothing too serious. The engine nozzles have good detail although one has a bit of a dent at the end (see photo). I should be able to straighten that out a bit. The radio antennae lacks detail ... but as it is less than 1cm in diameter it is to be expected. I'm sure I can add a bit of extra detail here and there. Thanks for looking
  4. Hi, so I keep word and enter the Atomic City EVA Pod from 2001. I must be completely crazy as I have good reason to fear I will not end this build in time which is a bad feeling when starting a GB (I usually get it some weeks before a GB ends...). I hope it is no bad omen that this is my 2002nd post. Would be way cooler if this had been 2001... (sure - noone but me will notice) I plan to install LEDs. I would like to install some blinking lights in the interior but will most likely do not. Speaking of the interior: The kit parts are simplified and my initial plan was to scratchbuild a better one following the instructions on the Atomic City web page - this will certainly slow down the build so I am hesistating - on the other hand I would find it a sacrilege not to add a proper interior to a kit of this scale etc. Enough moaning - here is the box (box is not original one) and content: And here is my amazing progress so far: I washed all parts and sanded the mating surfaces of the bigger parts. A quick fitting check revealed no big issues. I take the opportunity and end with this good news ;-) Rene
  5. Hi All, I havent posted in a while so here are some shots of my latest project which seems to be going on forever. You know the feeling when you turn over the instructions page expecting there to be just a couple of steps left only to find you still have a LONG way to go ? Anyway here it is Its the Tamiya kit. The body is all but finished and hopefully it will all come together soon. Hope you like.
  6. We are starting to get some great 2001 models, here is a build up article of FP Space Station V which came out last year. http://www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/sj_ssv.htm Marty...
