  1. Between 1998 and 2008 I owned a number of Honda Preludes; three third generation and one fifth generation model. I've not seen any models of either type although I understand there is a rare kit of the 3rd gen Prelude out there somewhere. This Tamiya kit of the 2nd generation Honda Prelude was picked up from a small model shop in Evesham when I saw it at a reasonable price. The appearance didn't change much between the 2nd and 3rd generation models, although few parts were carried over and an uncle of mine had one of these 2nd gen cars many years ago. The main parts of the body were sprayed dark blue - a similar colour to my first Prelude. It looks a little grainy, not sure if it's supposed to be like that (IIRC it's a pearl or metallic finish and needs lacquer). Engine bay needs another coat, body was united just to check fit. More grain on the boot lid. The instructions call for the underside to be painted mostly the same colour as the upper body. Inner wings will get a coat of satin black and I think there's a silver exhaust heat shield to paint and the petrol tank probably needs some colour too. Interior parts mostly painted, the instructions called for two-tone grey, which again is very similar to the car I owned. I think it was brushed with Tamiya acylics. Bumpers in metallic grey. Not sure how to do the indicators, it's a pity they're just moulded in. Suspension and dash top, pity about the broken tie rod, not quite sure how to fix. Cooling fan reasonably well picked out against the radiator matrix. Engine, I'm tempted to try adding plug leads to bring it to life. I think I experimented with dry brushing silver on the flat aluminium gearbox casing to give it a bit more life, I think it looks OK. Decals and glazing, still in the plastic bag. I think the digital dash (oh so '80s) was for the Japanese market only. Nice satin-finish for the wheels, but they need some black paint to pick out the surround to the "H" on the centre cap. Where now? Finish the body; light rub down, another colour coat, clear coat. details Paint the underside Assemble the interior Assemble the underside Final assembly.
  2. This has been sitting in an unfinished state for many years since I messed up the paint on the body. I chose yellow for the body and picked up a can of Humbrol enamel spray from the model shop when I bought the kit. Unfortunately it went on so thick that it looked like I'd used household gloss paint. At least I can check out paint stripping on the sprue before attacking the main body. In the past I've tried sanding back and respraying but it probably needs stripping back to the plastic. There is also a crack in the windscreen pillar, I hope I can glue and fill it so that you can't see the join (the photo hides it pretty well). I like the clear plastic undertray that allows some of the suspension and engine detail to be seen. Pity about the glue and finger print. Maybe a bit of sanding will save things, I might just try and use some satin black to paint over the marks while leaving at least half the tray clear. Onto the more positive stuff; I'm really pleased with the front and rear screens, the frames were probably painted in Tamiya X11 or Humbrol Silver. The rest of the build is pretty much complete. It looks like most of the other parts are painted, if I can just get the body done to an acceptable standard then it should be an easy job to finish as the kit seems to go together really nicely (typical Tamiya quality).
  3. While going through my loft I found some models I put together when I was between about 12 and 16; about 28-32 years ago. I think it's fair to say that my desire to get things finished far outweighed my patience and desire to do a good job. I also found some models that I must have started and maybe even finished at least ten years ago. As I'm new here I thought it might be good to put them all in one thread. My preference is for 1:24 or 1:25 scale kits and I think Tamiya was the easiest brand to get although I have a few others. I tended to get the cars that appealed to me, rather than following any more carefully thought out collecting strategy. The newer ones will come in a while, when my phone has recharged and I've taken some photos. Here are the really old ones, I'm a bit nervous sharing these (warts and all). From left to right (oldest to most recent); Hasegawa Buick Wildcat; Tamiya Porsche 911 Turbo "flatnose" and Tamiya Mercedes-Benz 500SL 6.0 (not sure if that's the correct designation). They were all brush painted, probably with Humbrol enamel as that's pretty much all I could get at the time, from a distance they don't look too bad but up close they're pretty rough. Here's a close up of the Buick; complete with runs, hair in the paint, poor masking and excessive glue. There are similar flaws in the 911, it's also lost the lip to the spoiler and part of the rear suspension. I also had some odd ideas about decal placement. Underneath the Porsche. Probably the best view of the Mercedes. I didn't bother with a test fit so the engine is too high and the bonnet doesn't actually sit properly. That rear spoiler fitting isn't pretty! I'm actually still quite pleased with how the interior looks, main flaw is that driver's side door trim that isn't located correctly. I'm not sure what to do with these. I'd quite like to strip the Buick down and give it a decent paint job. The Porsche, it would be nice to add back the missing/broken bits. The Mercedes, maybe just leave it as it is. I hope you will see from subsequent posts how my skill has improved even if only slightly.
  4. This is my recently completed 1:24 scale panel van (the one with the jägermeister box art). This kit has a number of firsts for me- -The first non-aeroplane kit I've ever built -The first non military kit I've ever built -And the first kit I've ever uploaded on Britmodeller All in all it I think it went rather well, with the exception of the doors that didn't seem to fit (the drivers door was too tight and the passenger door left a huge gap along the back of the door). However as I am the owner of a old beetle I can confirm that the doors never close quite right so it could have been intentional on revell's part.
  5. So, my latest adventure into the wonderful hobby of model building. The new Airfix 1:24 F6F-5 Hellcat: Going to be doing it in the "Operation SUNFISH" scheme, (only just because I think the other schemes look less interesting, just being blue [;)]) As usual, I just dived straight in without thought of photos and have only now thought to take any! This is being built OTB with the exception of the guns. Bought a replacement brass set (tho can't remember who from!) The cockpit, fuse and wings went together without many problems. Only issue I faced was when I joined the fuse and wings together and found the fuse was slightly larger than the gap in the wings! No doubt an oversight on my part, but nothing some sanding couldn't fix. Bit of overspray in the cockpit where I got carried away with the rattle can Have now just finished up the engine, added the extra detail with 0.7mm copper wire as suggested in the instructions..............question, what colour should the copper hoses be? Black?? Thinking I might leave it copper colour to give a bit of 'character'. Thats it for now.............more to come..............thinking I have lots of 'free time' due to the current corona situation Stay safe out there.
  6. Tamiyas kit, built (more or less) right from the box - I did swap the tyres from the RoG La Ferrari which are the same size but a lower profile. Paint is all Tamiya and all from rattle-cans - Grey Primer, then White Primer then Pure White and finally two light coats of Pearl White, all sealed in with two coats of TS-13 Clear. I used Tamiya three-part polish to bring-up the shine but due to my questionable photographic skills that doesn't show in the pics (d*mn*t). Interior is very dark grey and 'wine red' - my own mixes and I'm really pleased with the final look. Realised immediately after taking the photo's that I'd forgotten to put the exhaust tips on, so please don't mention my 'deliberate error' - as I type this they are now in-place ! Last word is the badges - self adhesive enamel that were sent to me by BNA Model World in an order from a couple of years ago 'just to try' - they're superb and I've no idea who the manufacturer is so when they're used-up that's probably it.   7. Taking a little break from the F1 cars and building something from my dream garage. This is the Hasegawa 1:24 Lamborghini Miura SV. It's the original red molded kit that I primed and changed to metallic green. I really liked this kit - proportions look great and the wheels are beautifully detailed. Foil transfer emblems also do a great job of enhancing the exterior of the kit. The only issues with the kit were some light sink marks around the headlights that I was able to level with some Tamiya Liquid Primer. Built box stock. The colour is Mr. Color Metallic Green #77 which was then clearcoated with GX100 Super Clear. It has a bit of a pearl in it which changes the colour depending on the light source - it can get very turquoise in some light and very green in natural light. I was trying to match one of the first factory restorations that Lamborghini's Polo Storico did. I think the metallic pigment is a good size for this scale, but my primer base could have been sanded smoother - the roughness of the primer showed up a bit more than I thought it would in the metallic. I stripped the chrome off the wheels and knockoffs, painted the wheels aluminum and used Alclad polished aluminum for the knockoffs. I love the wheel design and Hasegawa did a fantastic job replicating them. Window trim was all done in Bare Metal Foil with a Molotow Liquid Chrome pen for some of the chrome details like washer nozzles and door handles. There's half an engine in the kit, but it's all but invisible once you put the body on - you can just barely see the white air filters through the louvers and the glass at the back of the interior. Here's the interior before it went behind the glass. Interior was painted with Vallejo Air Golden Brown and Sand Beige. I used embossing powder for the carpet which was then painted but I feel it looks a bit too 'sandy' as opposed to fluffy. It looks okay through the glass. Some nice touches from the Hasegawa kit here including the foil transfer for the shift gate. I've been doing the grey background studio style shots for my builds so far but thought I would try some photographic backdrops to see how the model would look on 'location'. I found a few hi-res photo backgrounds online and then went to the 5 storey parkade next to my office and took photos of the pavement and sidewalk from above. I printed them out, mounted them on some foamcore and set them up as ground and background. I'm enjoying the photography as much as the build - I think my favourite part is seeing the reflection of the environment in the gloss of the body.   8. Straight from the box, Tamiya's Subaru BRZ 'Street Custom' - Started about eight months ago and finished over the last ten days. Paints are all Tamiya, TS-21 Gold stripes & X-5 Dark Green. I sprayed a light coat of TS-65 Pearl Clear, then decalled the body and sealed all that in with two light coats of TS-13 Clear. The interior is NATO Black, Dark Yellow and Flat Earth.   9. Thought I'd try a Blederunner theme and fool around with LEDs and electronics while doing so. This whole thing started with Fujimi's 1/24 (or maybe 1/25) Deckard's Sedan and the corresponding PE set by Paragrafix. Thought I would a couple of LEDs and ended up making a scratchbuilt base and building, adding 40 LEDS, a 5inch TFT display to play a video I edited with a series of ads and a Raspberry Pi Zero to run everything.   10. Ok guys, Next up on the bench is this little beauty from Revell. It has been in the stash for a while whilst other projects have been going on, but its time to get built has arrived. It is the 1/24 Revell BMW M1 Procar which will be built OOTB which should be a straight foward build. The original decals will not be being used however as i have sourced a set of the 1980 Le Mans #83 car which was the map of France. This should mean a lot less body painting and a lot of Micro Sol and Micro Set. The decals are from Studio 27 via SpotModel. There don't look to be too many parts so i'm hoping for a fairly quick build as i would like this one completed before the 'In the year i was born GB' which starts in August. If any of my previous build times are any thing to go by, i will need to knuckle down to this one, which should help ensure my speed is up for the 4 month GB time slot. I look foward to any comments that people have, feel free to follow along and add comments where you please. I will be uploading images to a shared google album here; BMW M1 Procar and also uploading a few of the photos in the thread to kep it as data friendly as possible for our mobile viewers.   11. Not content with having 2 kits on the go (KITT and a lamborghini Murcielago) I've started this A birthday present from my sister. I wanted (but she couldn't find) a Mk 3 to build as a memory to my dad who died last month as he had one in the mid 90's. Ive started painting with with thinned paints and what a difference (after all those years of paint straight out of the pot!!) I'm very happy with this so far.
  12. Some time ago I built a Ferguson TE20, from a Heller kit, as shown in this thread: I have now built a diorama as a place to show off the Fergie. The scene is a farm yard right outside a barn. The barn is shown as a single wall, built in a typical Swedish 1800 or early 1900 fashion, but having survived in to the late 1900:s. All items, excpet the Fergie itself and the spade are scratch built. And yes, the cat is a photo
  13. RoG's McLaren 570S all done, finished in Tamiya TS21 Gold, with Semi Gloss Black and Alclad Dark Aluminium details. Interior is my own 'cream' and 'light black' acrylic mixes. The CF decals are from Ka Models of Korea (highly recommended). Not a great kit and fought me all the way to the very end - the final assembly is a proper PitA. I knew to attach the dash onto the lip BEFORE adding the interior because I'd read and seen so many build reviews. Even so, the final fit is truly dreadful... All that said, like the Ferrari 458, the finished car is truly a thing of beauty to my eye. Please feel free to make any comments or ask any questions (yes I know the exhausts aren't on yet).   14. Revell 1:24 Ford GT Le-Mans Revell have a history of some very good race car kits in there 1:24 range, they have now produced a copy of the 2017 Le-Mans Ford GT. Ford re-released the GT road car a few years ago now to replicate the original GT40, but with modern luxury, and power. The GT was always a performance car so the cross over to the track is an obvious one. Revell have produced a road version as part of there ‘easy Click’ range and Mike has reviewed one previously. . This Le-Mans version is not part of the easy click range and is a fully detailed model kit and is officially licenced by Ford. The body is in 3 parts, (shell, rear section, and floor) with 7 sprues in white and some clear parts with some rubber racing slick tyres in the normal Revell end opening box. The parts are very crisp with no flash or mold lines and the detail is very nice. The rear section fits well on the shell and incorporates the roof. The way this is cast makes me think more versions of the GT will be produced in the future. The chassis is flat as expected on an aerodynamic race car and the access panels are engraved on the parts. Construction begins in the cockpit, a single bucket seat is fixed to a well detailed tub, sometime detail painting the switches and controls will be rewarded as the interior will be visible through the windows when the car is completed. The harness for the driver is on the decal sheet to be placed on the seat. The engine is next on the build with the block and transmission in 2 halves, with heads, intake and pulleys added with the exhaust headers. All the paint codes are called out referencing to the Revell paint range. The engine is added to the lower chassis plate along with the interior tub completed earlier. The extensive roll cage come next, either side of the engine and interior this includes the front and rear inner chassis leg detail, with the fire wall and cross brace sandwiched between behind the driver’s seat. The dashboard spans the interior at the front and copies the real race part nicely with the flat top and bottom steering wheel with multiple controls and a screen on the top of the dash. As a mid-engine car under the front isn’t an engine, but the air intakes and radiators to keep it cool on the long race and the ducting is a single part so no awkward seams to fill and sand down the tubes. The suspension is multilink with upper and lower A arms front and back, the hub with nice brake disk details are added, with the final piped and inter coolers completing the chassis and interior. The wheels are nicely done and the multi spoke design popular with race cars, with this design being strong and very light. The tires are racing slicks with Michelin decals for the side walls, the front is narrower than the rear so check before sticking the wheels in place! The body needs painting white, with blue and the instructions show where to split the colours between the red, white and blue. The two sections come together before the glazing is added. The windows come packaged in separate bags, and have the black areas pre-painted onto them with the clear sprue only holding the front headlights and light covers, the rear lights come in red clear ready to add to the back the decal sheet is comprehensive and as expected well printed. There is lots of detail and small decals with all the sponsor logos and required safety decals for the car. You have a choice of 4 different cars to model on the sheet with the differences in decal placement covered in the instructions A nice addition to the Revell race car range in 1:24, having seen the car after the race it would look fantastic done and weathered in post-race condition!   15. Revell Porsche 934rsr Martini 1:24 The Porsche 934 is the race version of the iconic 911 Turbo, built for the group 4 FIA rules for the 1976 season. By the time it was replaced in 1978 41 had been produced for the race track. It had a 3l flat six engine mounted at the rear producing from 480-550 bhp. Revell have produced a kit of this car in the classic Martini team colours to sit alongside the other versions including the orange Jargermeister version. This kit is classed as a level 3 kit and is in the normal flimsy end opening box, that is packed with plastic. The body shell is a single part and has some large re-enforcing gates over the windows and the gates are wide so will need care when removing. Under the bonnet at the front is a fairly well detailed area with he fuel cell and battery represented. The rest of the kit is over 7 sprues, the body parts are in white, and grey and black for the other parts, the chrome wheels, and a clear sprue. All the parts are well cast with no flash on the review kit. The chrome is nice and done to scale and doesn’t look toy like. Construction starts with the transmission, and this is joined to the engine block and this is a well detailed assembly with nice cast detail. Careful painting will be needed, the engine lid can be made to open, but even if glued shut it can be seen through the finely cast grills on the lid. The detail extends to the separate drive shafts, and 6 branch manifold. The massive turbo is added to the back of the engine before completing and adding to the chassis. Looking the engine can be left out till the end of the build if wanted and fitted from below. The wheels are BBS multi-spoke type, with the rear being wider. Behind the rim sits a brake disc, with a detailed drilled surface and caliper. Inside is a basic cockpit, there wasn’t much technology back in the late 70’s but some nice bucket seats with a roll cage building up a tub. The dashboard fits on the bodyshell from below before the interior is slid in. The painting instructions refer to the Revell paint range, and the list of required colours is listed on the box for you to check you have them in stock before leaving the shop. The decals sheet is to the usual Revell standard, crisp and well printed with some fine small details for the 1976 season with the Martini team. The C in the number would indicate these are printed by Cartograf. Overall a good model of this iconic car. Recommended. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers.   17. Yet another piece of work equipment on my part. This time a somewhat older type and model, namely a Ferguson TE20 "Little Grey Fergie" tractor. The kit is by Heller and is in 1:24 scale. First subassembly was the powertrain (minus the wheels).
  18. My wife was brought up in Germany, close to Stuttgart, she also loves orange cars, so... Tamiya's excellent 911/996 GT3 straight from the box and paint mixed by my favourite Mk.I eyeball method (X6 Orange with 'a few drops' of XF15 Flesh). One coat of 'Pearl' clear and two caots of TS13 Clear, all polished with Tamiya three-part compounds (no wax yet). Interior is a typical turn-of-the-century two-tone medium grey and dark blue-grey. Only thing on the finished thing that didn't come in the box is the carbon fibre roof decal by a Korean company 'Ka-Models' which I got through BNA Models in Oz. Not much else to say except that my kit came with a severely deformed left side A Pillar which threw-out the alignment of the front windscreen.   19. First Aoshima kit, and loved it ! - no hassle, just a wee bit of flash in the window openings. This is the Vertex boxing which means the deep skirts and front & rear dams are pre-molded on to the body so you can go straight to clean-up & prime with no delays. Colour is two coats of Tamiya TS24 Purple followed by two coats each of TS65 Pearl Clear and TS13 Clear. All cut & polished with Tamiya three-part compounds. Wheels & Tyres are Aoshima too, but after-market 18" WedSport SA70's which I de-chromed and re-painted. Other than that what you see here is what came in the box.   20. Finished about 30mins ago, so please don't touch the paintwork yet, OK ? Not the best fitting or most detailed kit, but as a car it's utterly jaw-dropping !.   21. Next on the bench - a pair of 'Prancing Horses': Fujimi's 246 'Dino' - my first 'enthusiast series' kit with a parts count of 237 according to the box-lid. Building this simply because it was the first Ferrari I ever saw in the flesh, it was pale yellow, driving through Southport sometime on a Saturday afternoon, in the early 1970's... and nobody in school would believe me when I told them on the Monday. The 458 is the RoG kit and is a much easier build ! For both cars I used the same process: Mold seams rubbed-out then 'scuffed' the body-shell(s) with Tamiya 600 grit sanding pad, then primed with Tamiya grey straight from the rattle-can. Next I polished that back with 2000 grit wet'n dry and a little water. The Dino was shot with (again) Tamiya TS51 'Racing Blue', the 458 with TS14 black followed by (new) TS95 Pure Metallic Red, which to my eye is almost exactly the same tonally as Mica Red. I applied three lightish coats to get the depth I wanted. I gave them both 48 hours after applying the paint then used CRC 'Paint Doctor' which is NOT a polish but a chip & scuff creme you can buy here at 'Supercheap Autos' - a sort-of Halfords equivalent. I'm very happy with the results and the finish on both of these could well be the best I've yet achieved. Next I'll focus on the Dino and assemble the engine & transmission (no small task) and hopefully get some pics up before next weekend. Mentioned after the Kodiak Lumina, that my next car build would definitely not be any sort of race-car, so here's Tamiya's gorgeous little 1966 1300 Beetle wearing Tamiya Mica Red & Light Gunmetal (TS-42). Decals are from the RoG Beetle and are superb. As ever please feel free to make any comments, hurl any abuse or ask a question.   23. By no means one of my better builds. TBH after three superb Tamiya kits on the run this Fujimi kit was always going to present less 'builder appeal'. Don't get me wrong the 'car' is nice I really like it, the kit isn't and those terrible 13" wheels look like castors on an oversized couch !! - No matter he she is in glorious Tamiya TS-22 'Light Green'.   24. Alongside the NASCAR Lumina, I'm 'tinkering' with this wee Honda aswell. Not a great kit, some of the details aren't quite as defined as you would expect, but the body-shell looks pretty good to my 55yo eyes. All the insides are undercoated in Rustoleum dark grey primer, you'll see more of that soon. The body is wearing a coat of Tamiya grey primer with two coats of Tamiya TS-22 light green which I've polished with 'CRC Paint Doctor' which isn't a polish, but a scratch & scuff removing cream.
