  1. After the news that Airfix are to release a 1/48 Gannet, I decided it’ll need some companions before I buy one, which gives me plenty of time to build this apparently excellent Sea Vixen kit, then see if I can find the new tool FAA Buccaneer for about £50 on eBay. Wishful thinking unfortunately. Anyway, I had actually listed this Vixen to sell myself, but having had no offers I’m now pleased it didn’t sell! This will be my first Fleet Air Arm kit in 1/48, and I must confess I’m less familiar with the squadrons, serials, etc than for RAF aircraft of the same era. I haven’t decided which markings to use yet, but as the schemes appear identical I don’t think I need to decide until it’s time for the decals. There’s a chance I may yet look for aftermarket decals. The by now very familiar box. Lots of plastic! Looks like it’ll be pretty big too, about Phantom size at a guess? Paint ready, for much later. Any errors or difficulties I need to know before starting? Also, does anybody happen to know a list of the serials/codes for 893 or 899 Sqn Sea Vixens when embarked? Not sure how quick progress will be as I’m currently rehearsing for my next play and it’s the Six Nations starting this weekend! All comments, input and banter welcome! And yes, I’ll probably be back onto a 1/72 inter-war biplane after this big beast!
  2. No - I have not entered this into the wrong thread Although Exercise Meteor remains my main project, with the proposed Railways GB having reached the November Bunfight I thought that I would see if I could get a short project through from start to completion before the end of the voting. Over the last decade or so I have build up a collection of OO gauge rolling stock for three projects: A second world war layout - now Operation Meteor A military railway - now aborted and the stock will be up for disposal The railways I remember - North & East London in the late 1950's - early 1960's - this project Building the Airfix Vintage DH Heron was the catalyst for the layout, but it will be a what-if with a feasible back story. All I am going to reveal in this initial post is that it will be a (so called) shelf layout and with digital control.
  3. I've fancied doing something a bit different for a while now, and having found these nice kits of classic airliners for decent value I thought I'd give them a go while I wait for decals for my yellow Whirlwind. Still waiting for the postie to bring a Roden DC-7 in JAL livery too. I'll make the Comet and Vanguard oob, including decals, but the 707 I'm planning to do as Pan Am. Just not sure which one to start first. I haven't made a 1/144 airliner since my teens.
  4. I won this delightful kit on ebay for just £20, which I think (hope!) is a relative bargain for this scale. Lovely box artwork and what a fabulous decal sheet, so many options. I love the 56 Sqn Firebird colours, but I don't know which red spray to use, plus it looks quite tricky masking along the spine without seepage, so I've decided to go for the early 74 Sqn F1, which also looks terrific with its black tail and spine. I have the newer F1 kit in the stash so once I have more experience and find out what colour to use I'll do the Firebird. I already have a more recent set of markings for this one from when I made my LTF Lightning F3 last year. They look better than those in this older kit so I'll use them. Interesting that Airfix provides a black tail code in one set, when it should be yellow like the older decals. Anyway, no problem as I have both. Options! ... The sprues. Always nice to have a two piece canopy so I can have it open. Can anyone confirm, the early F1s had no fuselage piping for wires, etc down the side at all? It isn't 100% clear from the instructions. Any other tips?
  5. Hi all Apologies if this question has been asked before, but I'm currently building the Revell 1/72 Hunter FGA.9 (it's going together beautifully and I'm delighted with it so far) and want to know what colour(s) to paint the air intakes? There's nothing indicated on the instructions and I've looked at dozens of images online but can't see anything conclusive. Can anyone help please? Many thanks Tim
