  1. Latest off the line, and my first Light Gull Grey over White Navy plane! Tamiya's 1/72 'Ford' is a gem of a kit- couldn't fault its looks nor fit! I went for the Cut Then Add Skyray decal sheet because of the Vf74 red lightning bolt and tan radome, but I could be tempted to build another just to use the Vf213 blue and white checkerboard markings! Anyway OOB aside from that; Tamiya white for the underside and AK interactive for the LGG. Ralph
  2. Hello everyone... With my -4 build sidelined for now and with me getting some father's day money yesterday I picked up a Tamiya Birdcage in 1/72 scale. Silly me thought Tamiya included a radome to turn these into a -2 night-fighter in the kit like the 1/48 versions. So unless I can find the out of production quick-boost part 72-119 this will be a standard -1 probably another Blacksheep bird as Ive already built Walsh's bird. I will have to dig through and see what birdcage’s fall free from my files. Any ideas or thoughts are welcomed Dennis
  3. Hello everyone... Hoping its a good Friday morning and everyone is Safe and Healthy ? Id like to present to you one of the five completed builds this week. This one was for the Journey’s end group build, and is the first WW2 Japanese aircraft I have built since the mid 1980’s. It is the Tamiya 1/72 Kawasaki Ki.61 Hien in the markings of 2nd Lieutenant Shinzo Takashima of the 244th Fighter group (Sentai). Its a beautiful kit that requires almost no filler, what little I used is more likely related to my construction than the kits design. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or add thoughts. I will add the link to the build if anyone would like to view it. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235072249-tony-the-mistaken-italian/ Dennis
  4. Hello Everybody... I will be building Tamiya’s Excellent 1/72 Kawasaki Ki.61 Tony. The plane was given the code name “Tony” by the Allies. This was because on the early visual sighting’s the allied pilots assumed they were Macchi Fighters from Italy, thus my chosen title choice. My chosen scheme is from the 244th Sentai Home island defense from May of 1945. I splurged on the Mottle decal set from Tamiya. Currently my air brush has a damaged part and tends to spray wrong for mottling now. I have an alternate scheme if it all goes left field somehow. I will paint this as a captured example flown by VMF-322 & VMF-323 on Okinawa July 1945. The Yontan Tony as it became know was in an Overall gloss blue scheme with red Rudder & spinner white nose and vertical stabilizer. If everything goes good and the Mottle decals go good. I will eventually build this Tony ⬆️ someday. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or thoughts ? Dennis EDIT: I just took a count of my ongoing builds, My previous record was seven builds. With this Tony Ive beaten that and am at eight builds now. Four Spitfire’s a Mk.Vb, two Mk.VIII’s, and an Mk.IXc. Then theres my F-107, MB.5, and RF-4B Phantom. I may be slipping over the edge, as thats going to keep me busy until The Corsair group build. Hopefully some of these will be done by then, as Ive got three Corsairs waiting to go.
  5. Kia Ora and good evening from the bottom of the world. It's (checks clock) 10.53PM in NZ so almost 2020. Pants of a year emotionally/mentally but I got through and finished on a high with 6 models I'm very happy with. Highlight was a 2 week tour of Vietnam in Oct/Nov. Wow, it was eye opening. This is one of the kits I was very excited to finish as I've always loved the deep chin and desert camouflage of the Vb Trop. This stems back to a diecast one I had when I was about 12 y/o. It had retracting landing gear and everything. This represents Neville Duke's 2nd Vb Trop ER821, 92 Sqn, Libya, March 1943. I was torn between this and a USAAF bird so I'm likely to build another. Decals came from Lifelike Decals sheet 72-023. Kit is the 1/72 Tamiya kit with PE harnesses added for additional cockpit detail, antennae mast mount was replicated using a template by UStar. 20mm barrels were replaced using brass items. Model was painted with Mr Surfacer 1000, Mr Color paints Middle Stone, Dark Earth and Azure Blue. Mr Color Super Clear for gloss and Tamiya satin varnish (lacquer) for the finish. Smaller details using Tamiya enamels. Panel lines treated with AK Interactive Dark Wash for desert and sand camouflage. Streaks made using AK Interior streaking effect. Chipping done using a small piece of sponge and Tamiya dull aluminum. Sand/dirt on wheels is AK's Sand Yellow Deposit. Photo's taken with my Samsung mobile, which I'm very happy with. Enjoy and see you for a stellar 2020.
  6. Hello everybody... Well this is my second build finished in the Pip's Priller series. It represents His Fw.190A-3 in June-July 1942. And a couple of the pair I've built so far, the Bf.109E-7 and Fw.190A-3. Questions, comments, thoughts, and or good stories. Here is a link to the build thread. Dennis
  7. Hello All When hostilities broke out in northen Angola in 1961, the word was out - "...To Angola, Quickly and in Force...". Portugal was determined to maintain the Empire at all cost using all the tools it had...and the F-84G thunderjet was one of those tools. By the end of the fifties the Thunderjet was already obselete ,and was prepared to be phased-out of the Portuguese Air Force, but was called for one last mission, Defend our Proviencies in Africa. After Portugal was able to buy brand new J35 engines to give them new live ,the first 12 Thunderjets were prepared and sent to Air Base 9 (BA9) Luanda, Angola where they formed 93rd Squadron "Magníficos" under the leadership of Major Costa Gomes. Their primary mission were CAP´s, Air support to ground forces and protect citys and towns from guerrilas threats. Because of the UN arms embargo (The guerrilas had unlimited acess to armament from the Soviet Union,China,Cuba and most eastern Europe countries...thank you UN) that prevented Portugal to buy new equipment, these jets had to endure the 13 year long war but atrittion was high due to accidents and structural fadigue ,also because of this many had their tip tanks replaced with surplus T-33´s ones. In all 25 of these jet served in Africa and the last one to retire was "5203" on October 14,1975 to be the last operational F-84G of the world. Enough of History and on to the photos , Here is my African Thunderjet built from the beautifull Tamiya kit, Used the Eduard´s zoom set and painted with Alclads metalizers. Tip tanks came from Hasegawa T-33 kit e decals from various sources. Enjoy and best regards. FBorges.
  8. It took me a while after my last build (DML's DO335 Pfeil that gave me all sorts of fits) to get my mojo back up and start on a new project. So far, my night fighter collection includes an American P-61A Black Widow and the aforementioned DO335. So to round it out I decided to tackle Tamiya's 1/72 Mosquito: The particular aircraft I will build is NS 838, "Wag's War Wagon" of No. 605 Squadron. Flight Officer Alan Wagner flew “Wag’s War-Wagon” and became an ace in the plane on the night of March 5/6, 1944. After its March 5/6, 1944 mission, Wagner’s aircraft carried two victory markings for Japanese aircraft Wagner claimed over Ceylon earlier in the war, along with three marks for the German aircraft shot down—two Me 410s and a FW 190. In total, Wagner shot down nine confirmed enemy aircraft and two V-1s. Tragically, he was killed while chasing a V-1 “buzz bomb” in heavy fog when his speeding Tempest fighter struck the ground in July of 1944. He was 29 years old. While researching this Mosquito, I learned that the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum in Everett, Washington owns a flight-worthy Mosquito that has been repainted in WWW's scheme. Google will point you to many photos and in-flight videos of this beautifully restored aircraft. Let's see what's in the box: Being a glutton for punishment, I've loaded up my plate with a hefty serving of aftermarket: The kit's instructions start with the engine nacelles, so my first task was to build the resin engines and firewall/engine mount in the Aires detailing set. Basically, I need to turn this: Into this: with only a bare-bones set of instructions for guidance: Many of the included resin parts are very fragile, especially the frames for the engine mount. I found some of these broken when I opened the box, and was able to salvage parts for only one engine/engine mount combination. Building the engine, itself, was straightforward: Building the engine frame was a different story! With only the above diagram to follow, I managed to CA the frame's fiddly parts together and mount them to the firewall: But I had unknowingly made a major mistake! I had assumed the lower frame section (RP 32 & 33 in the above diagram) should be attached at right angles to the firewall, and installed all of the other frame pieces based on that assumption. When I test-fitted the engine to its mount, I discovered the electrical generator on the engine left side interfered with the engine frame: After finding photos online of the Merlin engine installation, I realized that the forward upper section of the engine frame, and not the lower aft portion, needs to be perpendicular to the firewall (i.e., horizontal in-line with the engine's major axis). My only recourse was to break apart my hard-fought frame and re-install it properly: Now my test fitting of the engine to its mount, although not perfect, should hopefully be okay: Next steps are to paint and detail the engine, firewall, and mounting frame, and then piece the engine assembly together. How this is supposed to fit in the kit is still a mystery, as the Aires instructions say nothing at all about how to install the various resin assemblies (engines, gun bay, etc.) in the Tamiya kit. What have I gotten myself into?
