  1. I admit I'm a bit of an F-84 fan-boy so I was really pleased when Martin @RidgeRunner proposed this GB. Since then Special Hobby have released their lovely 1/72nd kit of the F-84F which pleases me greatly. There have been a few F-84F kits over the years, the SH kits really do the type justice - at long last! As soon as I received this kit I knew I'd be making one for the STGB, the problem I have is choosing a subject, I have decals for Belgian, Dutch, French (naturellement), Greek and Italian F-84Fs, but which to do? I know what @Enzo the Magnificent would say but I build so slowly I'd end up with a stash of started kits and nothing finished. I know Martin is going to do a Greek aircraft and @Giorgio N an Italian aircraft. I've got a French aircraft halfway through build at the moment and this will continue to be built through this STGB, the lessons learnt going into the STGB kit. So, not wanting to steal anyone's THUNDER, I've decided to do a Belgian jet, which specific aircraft remains to be decided and it rather depends on if DACO re-release the supplementary sheets for the Belgian aircraft. Anyway, onto the pictures... ...the references (told you I'm a bit of an F-84 fan boy)... ...my decal choices (many, many)... ...and finally, the kit!
  2. Hello all. I have now finished this little kit of the Boulton Paul Balliol. It is the Special Hobby 1/72 'Civilian and Foreign User' boxing, and I have done it as the Boulton Paul demonstrator aircraft. I was a bit concerned about the fit of the canopy as I had read and heard that it was not the best, but I had no issues with it at all. I sprayed it with a Tamiya Maroon rattle can as my interpretation of 'Plum Red' that was mentioned in the instructions. I found Humbrol 20 Crimson was a pretty good match when I needed to re-touch some of the paint work. I used the Peewit masking set for it, and that behaved impeccably. I have taken one or two liberties with what etch (from the kit) and what aerials to add so I know it is not a truly authentic replica, but I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed building this one. One thing I did notice at the end of the build was that the layout of the parts on the etch that was supplied was quite different to the illustration in the instruction guide, despite having the same reference number etch into it. The transfers tested my skills, but I eventually found how they liked to be treated. They were very thin, very opaque (contrary to my first thoughts), but did crack slightly before I found the solution. I bedded them down into Klear. Anyway, here is the finished result: I think this will be my last completion for 2023, and I am looking forward to next year and the Group Builds, where I will start off with a couple of Frog kits in the 'Frog Squad', and (maybe) a more up-to-date kit in the 'WWII Twins GB'. Thanks for looking, Ray
  3. This is one of the "look closely but not too closely" builds. I was excited when I started building this but was quite shocked at how lacking the kit was. There was no pitot tube or antenna mast (both are from the spares/scratch pile). The kit didn't provide an open cowling fairing option either. Added to that, the only way to attach the drop tank was using PE and I decided to leave it off as I already had my fill of PE with the cockpit etc. The cockpit has good detail but the canopy plastic was super flimsy and cracked. I got a vacuform canopy as a replacement but am not happy with it. Anyway, all water under the bridge and I am calling this done. The markings are for X21 "fifinella" of the 86th FS 79th FG, North Africa, 1943. The tails were painted by Cpl Joseph E. Pumphrey but all of them were soon painted over as someone thought these were scandalous. I used decals from Kits World. Being a Tamiya person, this was the first time I used Vallejo Air and loved it and see myself using them a lot more. Thanks for looking and as I said - look closely but not too closely 🙏 Note: updated pictures with corrected canopy position. Thanks for looking 👀 🙏
  4. Well I have decided to rush headlong into the Folland Gnat build while I contemplate what to do about the missing bits for my Spitfire XIX So first the obligatory box shot, I have put the rear bulkhead on the floor part and painted black, my favourite black is Humbrol 32 dark Grey so last night I launched into this big time and fitted the nose wheel bay as this helps set up the rest of the interior, then I went to bed 😴 So today I hope to keep the stress levels down a bit, but will attempt maybe 2 pieces, or if I'm feeling the love maybe more who knows in these stressful times. Did manage to make it to the Supermarket today for the Seniors only time, I was the oldest there, youngest were about 5 children under the age of 8, but managed to get the vital essential food groups covered I don't drink alcohol at all, so got that covered. Won't have to leave the house until the dog insists on his walk this afternoon. TFIC
  5. This will be my entry for this GB. It is the Special Hobby SAAB JA-37 Viggen, and will be mainly out of the box. I may just get some other decals, but they will be for a grey aircraft as I do not think that I will be able to cope with the splinter scheme this time around. I will save that for another model, when I have more time. The box. The parts The instructions and kit decals.
  6. For my first ever entry into a BM group build, my project will be the Douglas D-558-2 "Skyrocket" flown by Scott Crossfield on November 20, 1953. On that flight, Crossfield broke the Mach 2 "barrier", reaching Mach 2.005 in a shallow dive. It was the only Mach 2 flight the Skyrocket ever made. A few weeks later, I was born. The kit is very simple, consisting of one sprue plus a clear canopy, resin wheels, some PE, and decals: I'll be building this as an in-flight model, so won't need to worry about landing gear or cockpit details. That means, I only have about a dozen pieces to assemble. Which is good -- I might even finish before the group build deadline! Links to some great videos are here: And, here are some pics of the actual aircraft:
  7. The Merlin engined Boulton Paul Balliol was an advanced two seat trainer which entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1952. The Balliol was originally intended to be powered by a turboprop engine which is why the fuselage is so deep as the jet pipe would have been routed under the cockpit. The first prototypes were powered by a Mamba turboprop and were three seaters but Air Ministry policy changed and a more conventional powered two seater trainer was decided on. A total of 162 Balliol T.2s were built for the RAF which was quite a reduction in the original order for 400 as the Air Ministry had again changed their minds and were now favouring a jet powered advanced trainer. Turboprop engined Balliol protoype Meanwhile the Royal Navy were also interested in the Balliol and so a navalised version was built which became the Sea Balliol T. Mk 21. A total of 30 Sea Balliols were built and these first entered service in 1953. The Sea Balliol which I have modelled taking off from HMS Triumph A feature of the Balliol was that all of them had folding wings, even the RAF ones, which I suppose would have made packing lots of them into the hangars at RAF Cottesmore easier. RAF Balliols waiting to be scrapped. The RAF ones had larger wing roundels than the Navy ones for some strange reason. The height of the roll-bar support is very apparent now that the canopy has been removed. I have always had a fascination for the Balliol and was excited when Special Hobby announced a 1/72 injection moulded kit. They produced both versions and I decided on the Sea Balliol as I love aeroplanes that operate in sea environments. Also I had seen the only surviving example of a Sea Balliol at the RAF Museum at Cosford and was very impressed with it. The only surviving Sea Balliol. As with previous topics of mine I took a few photos during the construction a few years ago but the majority of photos will be of the completed model which is why it is posted here. The presentation for the RAF T. Mk 2 version The impressive box art on the kit that I built. Special Hobby have a superb artist in residence. Note the substantial tail wheel and arrestor hook fitted to the Sea Balliol. Must leave it here for now as must get ready as my wife is taking me out for a birthday meal. Back soon.
