  1. Hi Everyone, I don't know how many are followers of Vulcan XH558, but the trust have just emailed a newsletter around advising that XH558 won't be displaying at RIAT this year. Apparently the display schedule for the Saturday and Sunday are completely full, so the plane won't be there at all. I have always wanted to go to RIAT, but won't go as I love seeing the Vulcan fly. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Rick
  2. Given the woes I've documented in my first ever work in progress thread, I feel compelled to demonstrate that occasionally I do complete some kits and they can even end up appearing adequate. So here's the Vulcan I did for my dad a few years ago. I originally bought this kit for my dad in the late 80s, back when Airfix kits came in boxes with a built model sitting on blueprints on the lid. When I was little my dad had made several model kits and they'd looked far better than my own childish attempts at modelling had achieved. I knew that the Vulcan was his favourite aircraft so I hoped that getting him the kit would get him modelling again. Sadly life (not least being a parent) prevented my dad from ever building the kit so it languished in my parents' loft until I came back to modelling as an adult a few years ago. I offered to build the kit for my dad in return for it taking up display space in their house rather than my flat. I originally indended to have the Vulcan ready for my dad's 70th birthday in March 2011, but in the end my slow pace of work and the amount of work involved (particularly with the intakes and the tail join) meant I only just got it to him in time for Christmas that year. He was still very happy with it though - obviously he hadn't been looking on this site to see what a properly skilful modeller may have achieved! Anyway, as described this is a 1980s-vintage boxing of the Airfix Vulcan, with decals taken from the box. They generally went on fairly well, except for one hook stencil that got lost and some cracking of the port roundel and tail flash, so not bad for decals over 20 years old. The Flightpath detail set was purchased mainly for the tail pipes, though a few of its PE details (such as the canopy framing) were used too. My dad wanted the model displayed in flight so a lot of the PE fret, including the undercarriage detail and the air brakes was not required. The main colours came from Humbrol rattlecans, with detail painting largely being done with Humbrol enamels. Unfortunately the colour balance of these photos seems a bit off, leaving the green parts of the camouflage in particular looking a bit more blue than they are in real life: There's also a few work in progress photos on flickr, showing the tailpipes being added and the camo pattern being masked.
  3. Afternoon all Some more classic pics from a friend across the ocean. Taken at RCAF Station Rockcliffe Ottawa on 6th June 1664 the pics show Vulcan B2 XM646 with IFR Probe and probably XM647. 6th June is the date of the third National Air Force Day at Rockcliffe. The 40th Anniversary of the RCAF" was the theme and an RAF Vulcan was scheduled to display. The nose shot shows the markings of the Coningsby Wing with 9, 12 and 35 Sqn markings along with the Coningsby Crest although the castle on the crest looks a bit thick. The pilot’s name on the crew access door is AVM AHC boxer who was SASO at Bomber Command The Victor B2 pic was taken non 11 June 1964 but the date on the pic file gives no location. XL233 carries the tail marking of the Wittering Wing which comprised 100 and 139 Sqns. Any further info, corrections and the like would be very welcome - Hope they are of interest All photographs are courtesy Canadian Forces Joint Imagery Centre, Ottawa via Steve S Regards Frank
  4. Just finishing my XH558 rendering of the Airfix 1/72 kit - will post to RFI when done. It's had numerous coats of Humbrol Clear before decaling and a couple after and it's got quite a nice deep lustre about it. I'm about to do a quick panel line wash with Flory Models 'Grime' and then a final coat of varnish, final assembly and et voila! The question is should that final coat be Humbrol Clear again or Xtracrylix Satin? I've looked at loads of pictures (including the VTTS publications actually of the contemporary XH558) and it seems pretty shiny to me so I'm of a mind to stay with gloss but could be persuaded otherwise ...... Any thoughts before I commit myself? Many thanks, Andrew BTW, it is the Falklands War 25 years edition so based on the Vulcan Display Flight I guess rather than the XH558 we know today - the moulding was the old 1980s one, which was pretty shabby compared to modern kits and the decals weren't the best but I've had fun and learnt loads!
  5. Hi all I am still addicted to building Vulcan's and here is my latest one of the Dragon Vulcan's I have been making. I actually made her in July this year but I have not got around to photographing her. Sadly the weather is horrible and can't get any nice summer shots but maybe I will do some more of her in the future. Ironically the weather yesterday when I shot her was just like the inspirational photos I worked from of her in 1977 at Leuchers Here is the photo http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/MikePix/Leuchars%201977/VulcLeucXM606.jpg I am really pleased with how she come out I really worked hard to get her camo pattern close as I could from the photos. I just wish I was around back then I would have loved that airshow. Cheers all comments welcome good and bad as always. Rob
  6. Hi folks well its my first Vulcan with the wheels down not including the lindy I made for my dad. This is her as she was on display at Telford this weekend. I have really enjoyed this build I hope you enjoy the photos of her. She is on a diorama base I made to represent the end QRA pan at waddington. Cheers Rob Comments good and bad welcome but I apologies in advance for being photo heavy... Many thanks to Precision Ice and Snow for letting me display this on their table. I absolutely Love their product its made this dio look quite magical with the frost. Also it was fantastic to meet so many people off Britmodeller at Telford this year. I was very good fun indeed. Cheers Rob
  7. Hello, has anyone used this set? Would you recommend it? I'm tempted by it, but the price tag is putting me off. thanks, Andrew
  8. Hi Everyone, Well here it is. After more than a year spent on the back burner because of me being afraid of the camouflage painting, I have finally completed my Vulcan XH558 model. My wife helped me do the camouflage painting. She did it completely freehand, without any masking method. She had never touched one of my models before but she did say that she enjoyed painting it, but wouldn't want to do the building. Anyway onto the pictures. Upper Fuselage Tail Decals Side View : Comments welcome. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and help during the build of this project. Cheers, Rick
  9. Hi this is my first post in a few months the model was completed earlier in the year but this is its first real showing off since the build. the lovely smaller Vulcan B1a XH498 Performing a display in the 60s..... hmm Here she is the day before cosford show and before the satin varnish was applied. This is were she started. For anyone wanting to see the build which is still on going and about to resume work for the two silver b1s and a further white b1 but with pale roundes go here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234936632-1st-one-finished-dragon-vulcan-b1a-2-b1-big-surgery-for-3-small-kits/ I hope you enjoyed this post comments welcome good and bad. Cheers Rob My Fave shot of her
  10. OK, for those of you that don't know. I finnished reading the book "Vulcan 607" a few months ago, the story of the first Black Buck raid of the Falklands War. I was so inspired I am invisioning an airborne diorama of the 2nd last refueling bracket. On finishing the book I went out the next day and bought my first 1/72 kit in some thirty years - the Revell HP Victor. I have since been sourcing a 1/72 Avro Vulcan, one deal has fallen through (post payment :x ) . I have gained some XM607 decals from a local friend, and a "Dash-10" ecm pod from a fellow i-modeler (thanks David). Today I received my XH558 boxed Vulcan from Jumblies Models (hence this post ). I am now just waiting on my 2nd Victor to arrive from New Mexico (USA) next week (third Evil-bay auction), and then I have pre-assembly at Wideawake Airfield (my man cave) just sharing, as I am starting to love this project........
  11. Hi everyone, I'm here with a wip for the Dambusters 70th anniversary GB. I know I know, so many 70th anniversary Lancasters going around. So I've decided to make mine a little special. I am going to build all the squadrons planes from 1943 to 2013, mostly in 1/72. Starting with the Lancasters. I used an old mould revell, and a new mould revell. (These were in my stash at the time i started 3 months ago.) I also used an Airfix gift set for the dam diorama. the old mould is a sea of rivets, while the new features crisp panel lines. cockpits also tell the difference in terms of detail and accuracy using a 1/32 GBU, i proceeded to make a 1/72 tallboy bomb. Double trouble!
  12. G'day all from a cold Canberra (city that is, not bomber :-) ) I have the Airfix gift set of Vulcan XH558. I understand I have to change the exhaust nozzles to those of an Olympus 200 (I was thinking of using the Freightdog resin set). I also have replacement main wheels. Are there any other aftermarket goodies people would recommend? I know there's wheel well details but I'm not fussed - I won't be displaying it upside down :-( I'm mainly wondering about aftermarket intakes - what is the problem with the Airfix ones? Thanks! Malcolm
  13. This is my latest finished kit but is actually the first kit I did in my return to the hobby. It was bought about 6 Christmases ago by my Mum as a bit of a joke because I liked XH558 and was cheap on eBay! I got going on it using my limited modelling skills and threw the parts together, looking back I didn't do too badly considering it was my first model! Anyway I sprayed Citadel (Games Workshop) black undercoat and then hand painted (very badly!) the grey camo on the top side. This was the brick wall that I hit. The finish was crap and the colour was nothing like correct! It was put on the top of the kitchen cabinets and languished there ever since. When I got it down, the undercarriage had been broken at the bogies but luckily as it had been sat in the box they were still with the model, as were the undercarriage doors and the access ladder. The only thing missing is the IFR probe from the front. I decided to finish this as XH558 so removed the thimble TFR probe from the nose. I realised that the ECM cooling vent was added to the rear fairing of the tail but no amount of persuasion would remove it without surgery and I didn't want to risk ruining it so left it in place. I know it is not correct but its not a massive part so I can live with it. I started this yesterday morning around 10am, removed the rest of the undercarriage to make masking easier then free-hand sprayed the Medium Sea Grey on. Next came the masking, I chose the blu-tack and tape method and after nearly 2 hours had the top masked off ready for a spray of Green. Once this was on I moved to the underside but I decided to swap to a more 'mask as you go' method that was quicker and easier as you just mask off each bit of green as you are spraying it and mask the general area around it. The green finished I moved to the undercarriage bays, these were masked off and sprayed white. The undercarriage itself was fixed, with the bogies being drilled to accept wire axles and the wheels put onto these for extra strength. The legs were then sprayed NATO black and had the hubs and oleos painted silver, then glued into the now dry wells. The gear doors were sprayed as a seperate part and then glued into place. The ladder was painted in Yellow and added to the front access door, I had toyed with making this myself out of brass but it looked good as it was so kept it. Finally the canopy was masked and sprayed and then added with CrystalClear. Decalling did not start well with the Port wing roundel breaking up as it was slid from the backing, the transfers having dried up and not been the best in the first place (far from the Cartograf quality we are now used to!) but I managed to get everything else on without too much of a hassle. The finishing touch was a spray of varnish to seal everything in and I am now calling it done. The only fly in the ointment is that it wants to constantly pretend it is a WW2 fighter with its tail firmly planted on the dirt! In my haste to build it I missed the weight addition. To remedy this I am going to build a base for this to sit on with a hard standing and maybe some scenery. Here is the finished model, it was 0130 this morning when I took the image so there is only the one but I will hopefully put up more when it goes onto the base. **UPDATE** I have now finished the base and mounted the aircraft on it. It is a 'representation' of the apron at Doncaster Robin Hood Airport which is XH558's current base and was taken from a photo of it when it arrived there. I may add a few little detailing bits later on but this is it for now.
  14. Happy new year from me to all of you in advance. I've not been on much for various reasons and had a dry patch for 7 months after I finished my 1/144 tornado on the 1st of jan. until I did xm655. It's been a difficult Xmas as I lost my grandad he was my best mate but at 86 he had a good innings. Most these models were made in his presence he loved airplanes having done training in the atc he had affections for seeing views from a Blackburn Botha. Here are my models for this year I've actually achieved more than I though but I missed all but one of group builds I was looking forward too. So here they are.... The first vulcan b1 xa889 My 1/144th collection the vc-10 is the worst build I've done since I was a child decals broke parts missing but looks ok I painted the cheat line from photos. Harrier and tornado are revell and vulcan pit road need a globe master and a nimrod and Canberra oh a victor and valiant wouldn't hurt in really getting into this scale. The harrier and tornado are joyous kits as is the pit road vulcan here depicted as xl427 around 1981 the vc10 is a good kit it just fought me every step of the way Next up we have dragon vulcan b2 xh533 which I modded the end tail and tail cone with a restored very rare vulcan b1 produced decades ago by wiking as a fight recognition model the wing had been broken and therefore I painted here as xa906 both are 1/200 you can see how different and smaller the b1 was here Vulcan xl321 dragon oob Here with 533 compare tails Dragon xh558 For me the best is last good old xm655 I'm a proud member of I intend to offer my help to them this year if they can find a use for me This was my first big build after 7 months of no time and entry for the group build camo pattern brush painted My fave photo of the year xm655 with previous years builds. As viewed left row front to back xm655, xh558 vdf, xh562, Right row front to back xh557, xm648, and xl391 Got to have a happy gathering for new year right! Have a good one guys cheers rob
  15. Hi guys here she is I'm really excited about this the all new Pit Road Vulcan! what a gorgeous kit it is. here is my efforts i decided to not do the kit option i wanted a wrap around camo job so I went with XL427 sadly not a survivor. I used the kit decals. but the serial codes are from fantasy print shop. it is finished in humbrols excelent rattle can 163 raf dark green and humbrol 27 from a rattle can i find this shade works well as it has the right tone for a slightly faded in service dark sea grey. and has that bluey tone we all love. the model was masked with blue tack and the windows masked with pva glue. I hope you like her here she is.
  16. Hi there guys this is my entry for the vforce group build of the plane that im a proud member of. xm655 what a beast she is with her bigger 300 series engines and a joy to watch taxi such a shame she cant fly. here is my tribute to her made as if she could fly with 6 other vulcans. she was brush painted on the undersides and the camo. undersides hu166 and camo hu66 mixed with a dash of hu10 for a dark browny green. the medium sea grey is hu165 from a rattle can and has a nice blue hue to it that looks improved over there older tin offerings. the silver is revel aqua aluminium on the exausts and wonderfull stuff it is. many thanks for looking i hope you like her and look forward to comments good and bad. if you want to see her being built look in the group build section under vforce gb took me a week first model of the year and boy did i enjoy it. cheers rob Plus 5 other vulcans ,xh558, xh562, xh557, xm648, xl391
  17. Hi guys I've not had chance to do much modelling this year infact I had until now only completed one build! which aint much for me. I got back into things with this little avro vulcan kit from dragon this was the falklands boxing with decals for 558 so i did 558. It is a fantastic kit the fit is great and a joy to build this one has took me about 3 days doing about 6 hours each day. I decided i wanted to try humbrol's new shades for RAF dark green and medium sea grey from the excellent rattle cans and i have to say im impressed the colours are bang on and seem different to the tins the med sea grey having that blue tone captured perfectly bleaching in the sun and going very blue in shade as you can see in the following photos. I did decide to skip the little refuelling probe as this currently is like other models at risk of being knocked by someone else so i built it to last and as its so small ....(I'm not that fussed) The exhausts were brush painted with revel aqua aluminium (wonderful paint). The model was masked with blue tak this time i tried green first grey second as its easier to visualize the dominant colour for me anyhow. I was sceptical about doing this as it should really be green last so it bleeds over the grey however i felt the inversion would help with the scale and i was pleasantly surprised with the results. The model was then given a coat of Klear and the windows painted black with thinned matt black paint with flow improver and a cocktail stick to flow into the window frame edges and built up any over spill being easy to wipe away with a cocktail stick if needed. then the decals were applied with pools of klear to suck them down and then finaly a spray over with humbrol rattle can gloss varnish misted from about 4 ft away and then a final wipe over of Klear with a bit of sponge and what a joy this thing has been This may only be 1/200th but it still took 2 packs of blue tak to do! I remember doing An airfix one with blue tack and that took many packs of blue tak. I dread to think how much the reall one would take haha! I hope you like it I am really chuffed with it if i do say so myself. Cheers Rob
  18. Hi guys ive been off the scene for about 6 months due to various reasons but im back now and wanted to share with you what i think is exciting news. I do not know if this has already been broken on here but there appears to be a new 1/144th scale plastic injection moulded avro vulcan which for me is fantastic news as im sure it will be for many who think the airfix is too big or the dragon too small.(i think not for either but anyways) this model looks fantastic to me here is a link to the test shot models http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?scode=TOY-SCL2-14156 I have just picked 1 up off ebay and when it lands here i will do a review/build of the new kit. cheers Rob
  19. Hi Folks I need some help, I would really like to know which vulcan b2s carried the original antiflash white scheme al la b1 style with full shade roundels black serials and which ones carried the serials under wing. Now as i understand it the first batch of b2s were actually going to be b1s and the centre section was built as a b1 and then in the factory the new lager wing fitted and some fitted with the new ecm cone some with larger intakes. as i understand it xh558 was one of these. im confident xh537 xh535 were in this scheme along with xh533 which i know had the serials under wing also and was basically a b1 with b2 wings. Im sure i have seen xh558 in white with full shade roundels and possibly the original larger cross of lincoln on the tail but im not certain. Id love to know which were in the original scheme and if anyone has any photos i really would love to see them. I hope someone out there can help. cheers Rob
  20. One of my build themes is R&D and prototype aircraft. For this GB I will be modelling the first Vulcan prototype, VX770. This aircraft is, in my opinion, the best looking of the Vulcans, with its near pure delta shape and glossy white finish. Pics from t'internet: The first of two Avro 698 prototypes, VX770 made its first flight with Roly Falk at the controls on 30 August 1952 and the aircraft appeared at Farnborough just a few days later! It was joined by the second prototype, VX777, from September 1953, and the pair, along with the four extant Avro 707 research aircraft, made what must have been an awe inspiring appearance together at Farnborough just a few days after VX777 flew. Tragedy struck VX770 on 20 September 1958 at the Syerston air display when she broke apart in mid air, killing the crew. VX777 survived until 1963 when it became surplus to requirements and was scrapped. Probably unsurprisingly I'll be using the 1/72 Airfix kit as the basis for the model. This has been available in various incarnations, although I expect all have the same plastic content. Box contents: I'll also be using some of the Flightpath B1/B1A conversion set, in particular the smaller tailcone that was later greatly enlarged to house ECM equipment for the B1A and B2 versions. New undercarriage legs are also provided, which I'll either install or use as a pattern to modify the kit parts. (I plan to model a B1A at some point with the remainder of the conversion kit.) I also have the Mastercaster wheel set. Flightpath parts, with Mastercaster wheels to the right: I have numerous references on the Vulcan, so I feel I have a pretty good handle on what changes I need to make to depict the prototype (although if I have missed any please feel free to point them out, unless I've missed the chance to include them in which case ignorance is bliss!). One piece of info that I am lacking a definitive answer on is how much the nose was shorter by. On all Vulcans after VX770 the nose was extended aft of the cockpit to avoid the need for a telescoping leg to reduce during retraction into the bay. Despite all those references, most only mention the fact the nose was entended, but not by how much. Of those that do, one states 6" (plans in the latest issue of Model Aircraft) while another states 16". Please can anyone suggest which (if either!) is correct please? I'll be building the kit with the crew entry door shut so interior work will be the bare minimum given the small windows. I'll be spending enough time on the exterior! Looking forward to starting! Mike
  21. Hi all, Despite diligent searching I can't find anywhere with the Two Mikes Vulcan undercarriage bay and intakes in stock. I notice that Wolfpack Design do equivalent sets here: http://www.wolfpack-d.com/ I was wondering if anybody had any experience with using these sets, and with ordering from this company (are either any good?!) Thanks in advance, Phil
