  1. Hi All, Just taken some pic`s of my very latest completion: my attempt at making an Electric Spad out of Revells boxing of the old Matchbox 1/48 A1-E Skyraider Completed to represent an aircraft of VAQ-33 Det 14, USS Ticonderoga, June 1968 Built from what is mostly in the box, with a few modifications and improvements, including; Slightly embellished seats using scraps of plastic, paper and foil seat belts and wire, homemade windscreen wiper,... some antenna from plastic card, tail ECM fairing from a modified fuel tank, new cowling cooling flaps from plastic card thinned the wheels a bit and added brake cylinders and pipes, boxed and detailed the wheel wells plus prop, fuel tanks and ECM pods from the spares box with decals being a mix of the kits, the stash and the tail band being hand painted It`s not 100% accurate but near enough for my shelves. Hope you enjoy looking at, Cheers Russ
  2. Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to present my newest model. It's the good old tamiya Skyray. It was generally fun to build, fitting and detailing is very good, but the decals are not. They are rather thick, and didn't react with the softeners I work with (micro sol). The building was OOB, I haven't even added the seat belts. Colours are Modelmaster enamel, Light Gull Grey and white, after a preshade. I kept weathering to a absolute minimum (actually just some washing), as the aircrafts looked always very clean. My daughter wanted the aircraft to fly, so she drew a nice cloudy landscape. Isn't she sweet? Thanks for watching! Alex
  3. At 7.30am last Wednesday morning (23rd) I received a text from a friend at Newquay Airport telling me that a visiting US Navy Hercules was leaving at 8am. The weather was awful and It's a 25 minute drive, as is usual with me I couldn't make my mind up whether to go. I arrived after 8am but fortunately the Herc was still there. I wouldn't normally bother in these conditions, but it was local, it's military, and it's a Herc. .
  4. US Navy MK.3 Twin 40mm Gun Mount, pics thanks to Mike Costello.
  5. Hi Everyone, I`m stuck between builds again ( going to have to get some `shake and bake` kits in the stash ) so I thought I`d show you my 1/48 Hasegawa Scooter I built a little while back Great little kit, pretty much fell together, only the decals gave any grief..... like most Hasegawa decals and refusing to settle down onto anything but a gentle curve So had to touch up quite a few cracks and tears around the rudder and vortex generators on the wings The bomb had to come from a weapons set as no armament included in the kit Hope you enjoy looking at, Cheers Russ
  6. I've always wanted a large scale Intruder,it's been my fave US Navy jet since I got hooked on the Jake Grafton novels ny Stephen Coonts. As you may know,I'm undergoing Chemo at present & currently out of hospital,so I bought this kit to take in with me for the next round to beat the boredom. Anyway, our electric went off today so to kill some time,I started the kit,Gave the cockpit a base coat as well as all the white bits.Photo's to follow tommorow once these bits are a bit further along. 7. FFAR Rockets 1:48 Eduard Brassin Developed in 1943, the FFAR unguided rockets were originally designed with a 3.5" diameter body and were used for attacking surface vessels in order to puncture the hull and sink them. Upgraded to a 5" explosive charge on a bulged forward section, they were used with some success by Corsairs and Dauntlesses before they were phased out in favour of the HVAR, which flew at around twice the 485mph of the FFAR. Arriving in a slim clamshell box, the package contains eight rockets, plus a large fret of Photo-Etch (PE) metal measuring 5cm x 4.6cm. The PE parts provide the details including fuse wire, exhaust nozzle and two mounting shackles that clamp around the 3.5" body in front of the tail fins and behind the 5" diameter charge. Painting is simple, consisting of Olive Drab for the body, with the tip of the warhead and all the PE parts aluminium, which as the PE is already metallic means those parts could be left unpainted for the ultimate in metallic finishes. Metal! The fuse wire is a red-brown, and once painted should look more three-dimensional due to the way surface tension gathers paint thickness toward the middle of any narrow surface with sharp edges. Conclusion Not the definitive HVAR of WWII, but they were in use until 1945 when the much more effective "Holy Moses" took over for the following decade. Super casting, and lots of detail in the PE parts give you the best 1:48 FFAR representation you can get. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  8. Hi All, This is my Hasegawa F-4J Phantom II. I did originally buy this plane with the intention of doing a F-4S with Ferris Camouflage, but when I realised that the wing slats were totally different I rethought my plan of attack. The F-4 is quite possibly my favourite aircraft, and I remember seeing this particular colour scheme in a book I had as a child. I can't quite recall which brand the decals were, but they were excellent. Everything else on this build is out of the box. Unfortunately I sold this model before moving overseas. I was going to load it up with Mk. 82s but seeing I was selling it I thought I would rather save the TERs for my A-7 project! Thanks for looking. Now to do that F-4S...
  9. Gee this build snuck up on me, plus it seems it will the the 3rd GB in progress!! Now for something completely different I’m going to build an Italian Seaplane for this build, a pretty little Macchi M.5. Ok now before everyone gets excited and reminds me this is the US Navy GB, there is a little known fact that the US Navy flew Macchi M.5’s (loaned from the Italians) from December 1917. These aircraft flew as 263ᵃ Squadrigilia and were in operations against Austro-Hungarian forces over the Adriatic sea. In one of these encounters occurred on the 18th August 1918 where a US Navy Pilot Charles H. Hammann became the first US Navy pilot to receive the Medal of Honor. Unfortunately I can’t find enough details on Hammann’s aircraft to replicate this aircraft but will build the other aircraft which was important in this event, Ensign George Ludlow’s Macchi M.13015 (he was rescued by Hammann after being shot down) which is included in the decal set. Ludlow's is the bottom aircraft, very colourful. oh and I can't forget the resin, gotta have resin in every build! This is part of the kit. I won't be getting too carried away with internal detailing as most of it will be hidden, so this will very much be an out of the box build. This will be my first big scale biplane so will be a bit nervous when it come to the rigging, all helpful advise appreciated. Plus as an additional first this will be the first GB which has no added extras! Been looking forward to building this right from the beginning, plus will be trying a few different painting techniques I’ve seen in other builds.
  10. Originally I wanted to built this kit together with the new Corsair from Hobby Boss. The latter has ended up on The Stash. Maybe some time in the future... The kit is pretty much straight forward. It has a non-foldable wing and posable flaps. It also includes some ordnance (rockets, bombs) and some parts to build a F4U-5N (nightfighter). The wing consists of three parts; an underside and two uppersides. The underside is a big piece of plastic to glue. And I am afraid I messed up the left part of the wing. First let it dry. What brand glue you people use???? I use the UHU-bottle with brush.
  11. Here’s another Crusader that I built several years ago. It's the old reliable Monogram F-8E that I converted to a 'J' model, which I have ugraded over time. I added an aftermarket seat, and an out-of-production flap/droop/underwing bay set by High Flight. I scribed lines on the leading edge droops to at least depict the appearance of the extended droops of the 'J' version. The UHT’s (unit horizontal tail) are larger on the J version, but I didn’t correct that (yet!). I also extended the main and nose gear struts to correct the too-low stance of the kit gear, and later used parts from a Hasegawa Crusader kit for the ‘football’ ECM antenna on the tail. I added scrap plastic rod and wire to busy up the gear wells, and scratch-built steps and a boarding ladder. In addition, I added a canopy restraint strap, replaced the plastic pitot probe with wire, and added an afterburner nozzle from a section of an old F-18 exhaust cone. I used SuperScale decals to depict the VF-211 CAG jet from USS Hancock, circa 1972. The Remove Before Flight flags are from Eduard, and the Sidewinders are from Hasegawa’s weapons set (which I need to replace with a later variant!). Monogram’s Crusader is a great value for the money, with the biggest innaccuracy being the cockpit is a few scale inches too wide, giving the canopy and windscreen a flattened appearance when compared to the actual jet. But with a little extra work, it can be buit into a fine model.
  12. USS Midway Museum - a Photo Essay of the Aviation Collection On Christmas Eve, I was able to visit the USS Midway museum in San Diego - the first time I've had the chance to visit a large US carrier, even though she's quite small compared to modern supercarriers. A full history of the ship can be found at the museum's website, http://www.midway.org/ along with a full list of aircraft exhibits: http://www.midwaysai...rg/status_a.htm There are a total of 27 aircraft to be found aboard, postwar aircraft are located on the Flight Deck, while the World War II aeroplanes are located on the Hangar Deck. On the day of our visit, the ship was teeming with people, despite the very wet and chill (for San Diego!) weather. Consequently, I had some difficulty getting clear shots of all the aircraft, and didn't even try to get photos of the Hangar Deck exhibits. In no particular order, here's a quick visit to the Flight Deck, fixed wing exhibits: RA-5C Vigilante F9F-8P Cougar AD-4W Skyraider F-4N Phantom II F-4S Phantom II A-4F Skyhawk S-3B Viking F-8K Crusader A-6E Intruder E-2C Hawkeye ...and the Rotary Wing exhibits: HUP Retriever HSS-1 Seabat SH-2F Seasprite SH-3 Sea King HH-46 Sea Knight UH-1B Huey SH-60D Sea Hawk Finally, a couple of fun photos. The Flight Deck and Island: And this chap's knees probably ached at the end of the day - fancy doing this all day, every day..... Of course, there's lots more to the carrier than the aircraft, but that's another story. Overall, a very interesting and enjoyable museum and well worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood.
  13. Hi, Just arrived to my workbench: USS Fort Worth LCS-3 from Cyber-hobby (1/700 scale). Thanks. Regards, Ayala Botto Facebook: "Ayala Botto Model Trains" http://www.facebook....100140160133220
  14. Hi, After almost 5 years I’m resuming to build model warships at 1/700. I ordered the USS New York LPD-21 from Cyber-hobby as well as extra RIM-116 from WEM produced by Orange-hobby. The level of detail of the Orange-hobby RIM's is amazing and they have the correct dimensions. The same cannot be said regarding the original RIM's. I also added Edward railings and SBROC's. The flight deck will have 2x MV-22 Osprey (included in the kit), 1x UH-1N Twin Huey from WEM (Ref. AS 7177) and 2x or 3x AH-1W Super Cobra from WEM (Ref. AS 7176). One of the MV-22 will be folded (main wing and propellers) on the way to the hangar and the second one parked with the rear ramp opened. I still have in mind to put a hovering MV-22 Osprey from WEM (AS 7077) with a Humvee from JAG (Ref. JAG 803) or a 155mm howitzer included in the JMSDF LST 4002 Shimokita Tamiya Kit. The following image shows a similar configuration what I have in mind to my LPD, but without the Sea Stallions. As far as the MV-22 Osprey camouflage pattern concern, this is the scheme I used: I used a RHIB inside the starboard side behind the large sliding door with a scratch crane, as the Cyber-hobby kit does not include a single one! I must order some extra RHIB from WEM to storage amidships. The stern gate will be open with a LCAC also included in the Cybery-hobby kit with a couple of Humvees or M923 Trucks (Ref. JAG 802). For the time been the LPD will be temporarily placed with a full hull configuration in the stand provided with the kit, but in the future this will be my first project with a model in a water diorama. Now some photos: I'm still working on the Nulka launchers to be placed near the SBROC Launchers. Hope you like it! Thanks. Regards, Ayala Botto
  15. Hi everyone, Whilst I`m in the process of finishing my USAF Spad, I thought I`d show you my Revell-Monogram Skyraider that I finished this summer. done as an aircraft of VA-145, The Swordsmen aboard USS Intrepid Not quite OOB as I made a few `improvements` such as widening the circumference of the cowl with some plastic sheet and lots of filler opening the cowling shutter to display the engine and replacing the kits dodgy wing tanks with Zuni rocket launchers from a Hasegawa weapons set Kit decals and odd bits of wire here and there. hope you enjoy
  16. It is with 3 strikes against me that I venture to offer this post. Being a backwoods "COLONIAL" who is not normally a ship modeler, who also is unsure of what ship modelers consider refetrence material. While search ing for material on US Navy catapults I came across' www.hnsa.org On the index page that comes up in the navy documents section there are numerous manuals including 2 on US Navy camoflage, 1 in early 1942, & another in 1956. Both contain color profiles illustrating the various patterns. In tha age of sail are 2 very important English naval books; The Elements & Practice of Rigging & Seamanship by David Steel 1791, and,Textbook of Seamanship by Commodore Luce, 1891. These are complete copies. Further down the index page there is HNSA-Booklet of General Plans. This has a list of very detailed plans for US Navy ships, some of which have severtal pages. The pages come up very slowly so do only 1 page at a time & wait for it to come up fully. You can bring up each page by using the bar on the right hand column. By bringing up the black bar across the bottom & clicking on the + symbol you can enlarge the plan every time that you hit it. In the video section are 3 videos showing Australian POWs being rescued by US submarines, at the bottom of that index page. This is an extensive site with a lot in it. Carl T
  17. VA-195 Dambusters A crack at something different for me this time. 1/48th Hasegawa 1/48 Corsair A-7E with Superscale decals (Tail plumage slightly out of register) and a few smaller shots from a higher perspective First time I've used acrylics. (Still not too sure about them) First time I've tried pre-shading. (Still having trouble getting the airbrush to follow the panel-lines, but it turned out better than I expected) First time I've tried panel-line washing. (Still not sure how long to leave the wash in before trying to wipe it off) Plenty of mistakes made along the way, but it's all part of the learning curve. Thanks for looking. mike Comments and criticism welcome
