  1. I am trying to finish some dead projects and restarted on a pair from the Nordic GB back in 2020. I was going for an out of the box build of a J 29E but then I started to scribe the raised panel lines. It was a rather quick job getting something that look like an aircraft. In a box I found an etch set from Maestro that I decided to use. I needed to find the remaining parts for the old build an to my surprise I found a complete kit in the box so I thought that I could just as well build it too. It will be the photo recce S 29C. I had a second set of etch and put it to use. I was thinking of make this as an early machine without the "saw tooth" wings so I needed to convert the wings. I started by cutting the wings before assembling them. After gluing them together and mounted on the fuselage we got this. Then I needed to the get the sight for the camera that goes to the left side of the front . I I built it and drilled the small holes before everything died in November 2020. Now it is October 2022 and I was looking at pictures of the early reccetunnan without the saw-tooth wing to see if I had decals for it. To my surprise I found that it didn't have the camera sight or the small windows. Aaaargh. The holes has been filled and the damage from removing the camera sight has been repaired.
  2. Here is another group build that died. It started in the Nordic GB back in 2020. A S 29C and a J 29E is what is possible to build out of the box but I wanted the J 29F that had an afterburner. The part that needs to be changed in the fuselage I take from the Matchbox kit. I messed up cutting the parts so there are a big gap to fill. I might use the cockpit floor from a Matchbox as well as it is more correct than the Heller tub. I have filled the mess I made with plastic card and putty. The new cockpit has also been started. I found an etch set in the box that might come to use. This has to be my last afterburner conversion. It's my third 29F so it is starting to get boring. On to the wingtip lamps. I drilled a small hole in clear sprue, filled the holes with clear green and clear red to simulate the light bulbs. Then I glued them to the wings to sand them to the right shape. It is starting to look like plane. I adapted some Airfix Draken pylons to fit.
  3. Hello britmodellers, Here is - finally - my interpretation of Saab's J 29F Tunnan based Pilot Replica's 1/48 kit. OOB and airbrushed (PE seatbelts were part of the boxing) except I didn't add the PE cockpit mirrors (nice but I kept marring the clear parts with gloss clear to fix them) and replaced the rear wingtip lights (nothing wrong with these) with a blob of clear paint and gloss to try that method for self-made lights. I didn't use the decals for the dayglo and yellow, they were painted. The build starded as part of the Nordic II 2021 GB. I'd like to thank Rich @trickyrich for the abovesaid GB, as well as Enzo @Enzo Matrix and Mike @Mike for repeatedly moving the build thread over the very long time it took me to finish it. Also, my thanks to @pilot-replicas for the relacement parts (guess who is clumsy enough to overturn the CA bottle on a subassembly when placing nose weights....). This was a pleasurable build of a very good kit. The NMF and weathering were a different experience. Not disappointed, even rather pleased with the result, considering it was my first sludge wash to do panel lines and weathering. I learned some lessons for next time. Here is the build thread: Many sincere thanks to all those who gave support during the build, for the build itself and some dire life circumstances that interfered. I wanted something not too shiny and finally it came out with maybe a quite too scruffy look. Well, pics better tell the truth: Thanks for watching. I hope you'll like it. Have fun yourselves and a nice day (modelling or doing whatever else you enjoy). Cheers. Pat.
  4. Fly is to release a family of 1/32nd Saab J-29 Tunnan kits in 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021? - ref. 32022 - Saab J-29F Tunnan - ref. 32023 - Saab J-29B Tunnan Source: https://www.facebook.com/largescalemodeller/posts/1275601632511789 V.P.
  5. I have to brag because I still have a brand new 1:32 scale SAAB J 29 B "Tunnan" from FLY 32023. FLY has released "Tunnan" in B and F versions and I managed to get both of them and both will be shown here. For this model FLY has also released masks to paint cabins (artm32011) and wheels (artm32014) which I also have. This is a quick in-box of the kit. I will do rest of in-boox pictures as soon as I have some time.
  6. I have to brag because I have still new from FLY 32022 - SAAB J 29 F "Tunnan" in 1:32 scale. FLY has released "Tunnan" in B and F versions and I managed to get both of them and both will be shown here. For this model FLY has also released masks to paint cabins (artm32011) and wheels (artm32014) which I also have. This is a quick in-box of the kit. 7. After the J-29A/B - ref. TA7201 - (link & link) Tarangus Models is to release soon a 1/72nd Saab J29F Tunnan kit - ref. 8. So the Tunnan (Matchbox)was recently completed which I decided to add to the rock displaying its younger Lansen(Heller) stablemate. I find natural metal finishes quite a challenge ....not there yet but ill keep trying 🤪
  9. Hi all, here is the latest build off the production line Hobby Boss' 1/48 (actually nearer to 1/51) SAAB J-29F Tunnan. By no means the most accurate kit but what it lacks in accuracy it more than makes up for in terms of ease of build. there is barely a smidge of filler anywhere on the kit and it has been a very enjoyable build. I painted it with Vallejo metallic paints and Gunze for the camouflage and used decals from Moose Republic which are light years ahead of the truly awful ones which come with the kit. I hope you enjoy the pictures. For those of you interested here is a link to the WIP; https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235067561-good-grief-some-idiots-bought-the-hobby-boss-tunnan-and-hes-going-to-build-it/ And please check out the other fantastic builds in the ongoing excellent Nordic GB that this was built as part of. As usual all comments and criticisms are gratefully received. Thanks for looking. Craig.
  10. Yes I am that idiot and yes I am going to build it. As I'm sure most of you are aware the Hobby Boss 1/48 J-29 Tunnan has come in for a fair amount of stick, mostly because it is fact not 1/48 scale as Hobby Boss made a bit of a boo boo with their calculations which means that it actually comes in at around 1/51 scale which as far as I'm aware is not one which is used a great deal, at least not intentionally. Aside form the scale issue it actually isn't that bad a kit, it is certainly a lot better than the AZ kit and is well engineered and if it's anything like other Hobby Boss kits it should go together with too much trouble. there are other issues such as the intake, which is too large but I am going to live with them, if anyone can point me in the direction of a 100% accurate kit then please feel free to share it. The decals in the kit a bit of a joke as the crowns on the Swedish markings are rounded instead of being poointed and the stencils are written in gibberish so to that end I have bought Moose Republic sheet which also covers camouflaged aircraft which should make painting a bit quicker than a NMF aircraft. Lets have some pictures shall we? Starting with the ubiquitous box lid and untouched sprue shots; And the decals from Moose Republic next to the instruction sheet; And a closer look at one of the fuselage halves which hopefully shows the nice surface detailing of the kit; I'm off to make a start on this one as I'm way behind everyone else's builds and would like to get at least one other project underway. Thanks in advance to anyone who decides to look in on my progress, and all your comments and criticisms will be gratefully received. Craig.
  11. Brought out this oldie from the stash. A S 29C and a J 29E is what is possible to build out of the box but I want the J 29F that had an afterburner. The part that needs to be changed in the fuselage I take from the Matchbox kit. I messed up cutting the parts so there are a big gap to fill. 12. I've started a new build with something that has always interested me. I'm a bit stunned that there is now not only modelkits of these objects but they are also very, very good! I might warn you that this build might sound like a commercial for the company Pilot Replicas but I don't work for them, unfortunatly... These are the kits I'm going to try and do something nice with: I was going to start this topic a few weeks ago but I couldn't resist building instead. I've started the J 29 Tunnan and I'm loving it. I have been building models for the last 30 years but I have never seen this quality in a "mainstream kit"! The parts fit together like a dream and the sharpness of the detail is great. The whole package just screams quality! As I said... I'm sorry but it's a great kit and I'm very happy. The J 29 is my absolute favourite aircraft of all time. As some of you might already know I have a full scale one to play with! Stay tuned! I will post more pictures of the build as soon as can upload them to Photobucket. Andreas / Rudolf_Filip

  14. Hi Guys Here is my latest completed model, I thought it would be a 'quickish' build and paint, but it took a little longer, I will add some more detail and a few pictures to look out for a few trips and snags, not all kit related there were some of my own. The kit is good but I found a few little niggles that I could have done without, or the manufacturer could have taken a little more care. Would I build another....YES but would certainly do a few things differently. Straight out the box, and painted mainly with Vallejo Acrylic 'Metal Color' cheers Ali The tail plane is not shown very leerily on the instructions as to what is top side and what is bottom side, I eventually with totally smooth elevator on the TOP side, I think it is correct. I think that there should be a few extra lumps and bumps (control horns) but I did not add these. When decals are applied for this scheme, there are two separate decals that fit the side that has the additional detail (on the bottom of my kit) but the one for the top is supplied in full length, when that is applied to the kit it is fractionally too short, so I had to make a quick slit through the decal while it was applied so I could get it to fit correctly. Additional pictures and some guide lines and things to look out for when building the kit. If doing this scheme the black strips for under the wing do not quite fit. The decal gives a cut out for the pylon be placed within, if that is done then the decal will not fit between, the flap and the aileron area, so I positioned the cut out correctly for the pylon, but then had to add small additional black strips just inboard of the aileron, look carefully at the picture, and you will see a faint joint line in the decals. The undercarriage doors on the front wheel bay are not shown clearly on the instructions, in one picture (15) they are shown with the cut out areas at the back, this is correct next stage 16 shown at front, it is just confusing. Also I would try and think of making a small modification to allow for a more positive attachment of the doors, when all painted up it is quite tricky to get the wheel assembly and the doors securely in place. Great care needs to be taken on getting all the decals correct on the fuselage, the black decals and the 'roundels' I found that it quite tricky to get the cockpit to fit correctly and the instrument panel is very week in the narrow areas, and I broke mine a few times. Some of the fit may have been down to me, but I would advise that you take care and possibly have a trial run before it is all painted. I painted most of the parts individually and then tried to assemble and fit, next time I would do more of a dry run fit first. Note the sliding canopy does not have any 'metal frame work' on the front edge Note these are the parts for the intake, well as can be seen above and below the 'turbine face' is JUST too large to go at the end as they would have you assemble so I shortened the pipe as shown. As can be seen there are even small slots there in the tube for the turbine face to clip into, makes you wonder??? I am not 100% sure what this clear lens is to be honest BUT I could not get it to look right by just painting the inside face, so i coloured the small dot in the middle as shown and then added a piece of plastic card with some chrome foil on behind the lens, see picture a few above, I think it worked quite well. The area for the landing lights does not have any backing, so I added a small piece of card to block that in. The exhaust is not great, so I replaced the kit parts with a one piece tube. A few general notes and things to be aware of or to look out for. There are some areas where the rivets, have gone altogether, especially top and bottom of mid to rear fuselage, also some have been stretched, I did some repairs to these but if you really want a much improved model you will need to spend time on these to make these a lot better. The main undercarriage doors should also have some rivet detail added, they are very bare compared to the rest of the kit, and it show's, I will add them next time round. I found the 'coloured' decals quite thick and they needed warm water to remove them from decal paper but once on the model they were quite difficult to move and certainly needed a strong deca solution to bed down onto the detailed rivet surface, I use the DACO strong decal solution. I was tempted to spray the black areas, but then went with the decals, I thought these maybe tricky to apply BUT they are more pliable that the colour decals, but they need to handled with care, and as mentioned earlier the alignment of six black decals and the roundels on the fuselage is tricky. I found a very good sight with amazing pictures that are really good, and inspirational, you can see all the rivet and marking details and panel colour variations. here is the link http://www.jn-photo.se/Browse-my-images/By-Type/SAAB/SAAB-J29F-Tunnan/i-jw8Kt24/X3 Hope all this helps, cheers Ali
  15. Probably the best kit I've ever built. Bravo Pilot Replicas Thanks for watching Andrew
  16. Hi all, No pics organized yet, but I've done enough to at least admit to it. I'll update this later with the backstory (that's not organized yet, either!) Imagine, if you will, that when Grumman was asked to investigate a swept-wing carrier fighter when their F9F-2 was given the green light, rather than going too far with requirements and airframe in the XF10F program, they had instead successfully argued to keep it simple and just build a small testbed that also had potential as a fleet-defence interceptor/ day fighter? I got the kit because when it was announced I saw the resemblance (in some ways) to the XF10F. I don't care about the Tunnan enough to spend a bunch of money on a decent kit of it, and I figured for my purposes the under-nourished factor wouldn't really matter. As it turns out, I'm finding it quite freeing- it has given AMS a knock, and I'm taking advantage of this temporary opportunity to be slapdash, not let things cause stumbling blocks, and JUST HAVE SOME FUN (also known as "actually build the damn thing")! I don't recommend such drastic measures for all- use at own risk. bob
  17. After the recently Pilot Replicas announced kit http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234972373-148-saab-j-29-by-pilot-replicas/?hl=tunnan#entry1820293 Hobby Boss is also to release a new tool 1/48th Saab J-29 family in 2015/2016 - ref. 81745 - Saab J-29F Tunnan - ref. 81746 - Saab J-29B Tunnan Source: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234972796-hobbyboss-148-for-2015/?p=1828290 V.P.
  18. And so this flying barrell is finished: For those of you that have not seen my WIP, (here), here is a brief summary of this model. And let us start with the positive side. First: It looks like a Tunnan. And maybe that is the most important thing. AZ Models J 29 did not. Fit is also terrific, no problems at all, which makes it very easy to build, almost a weekend project. Surface detailing is fine and crisp and panel lines are correct. Cockpit is fairly good detailed as well as the wheel wells. It has a nice boxart, and the box is also very nice, made from - what I can see - very reliable cardboard. The plastic bags that contains the sprues seems to be of good quality, and... and... OK. Let's switch to the dark side. Decals are the worst I have ever seen on this side of 1970. And although it looks like a Tunnan, it has minor shape errors almost everywhere - however you have to be a Tunnan expert to see them all (I could not). Most annoying is that the air intake is too large. Another shape error is a continuous line from nose to exhaust, the real Tunnan has a more flat belly. But hey, still it looks like a Tunnan. The worst error is however that it is too small, about 1/52 scale. A bit sad is that the main wheels and the ejection seat seems to be in 1/48. SInce the decals were useless, i used decals from my spares box. Some of them are in fact from different 1/72 sheets. I painted it with Tamiya colours, the green is a mix of a number of different green and grey shades. Most is OOB. The only additions are seat belts, the red handle on the seat and brake wires on the main gears. In a few weeks Pilot Replicas will release their version if the same subject. It will be much more expensive, but also much more correct (I have seen it, it is amazing!) and you do not have to fix decals on your own. Anyone who wants to build a perfect model of this iconic aircraft should turn to their release. But for those of you that find it is too expensive (HB's Tunnan is about 3/5 of the price of PR), want a fairly enjoyable build and are satisfied with a model that in most people's eyes looks like a Tunnan, this one could be a good choice. So to quote myself from the WIP thread: The conclusion for this model is that it, apart from the decals, is a terrific kit for all the lovers of 1/52 scale.
  19. This is my latest completion - SAAB J29B Tunnan assembled from new Tarangus kit OOB decals represent aircraft from F.8 Wing at Barkarby near Stockholm somewhere in mid-50s Kit is quite nice overall - but be patient to align wings, stabiliser, and particularly resin wheel bays. My additions included resin wheels from Aires, metal pitot tubes, some improvements in cockpit - seat harness, port side wall inside the cabin. I also replaced original exhaust pipe (a veeery basic!) with a plastic ring+resin nozzle for MiG-15. I cut the rear part of MiG-15's nozzle with turbine blades and attached it to plastic ring. Tunnans were not painted which resulted in various shades of panels as can be judged from photos. I tried to reflect this effect by painting my Tunnan with 5 various shades of aluminium. Enjoy the photos
  20. Some of you will have received the newsletter from Tarangus concerning their much anticipated (by me and plenty of others) 1:48 kit of the Saab Viggen. They have decided to dump the short-run technology and go for a full-metal modern tooling that will have the effect of improving the finished article, but delay its release until the summer. GOOD says I!!! I'd rather a better Viggen than one in my hands now. More power to their Swedish elbows, and good luck with the extra work they've let themselves in for! In the same newsletter, they announced their first 1:72 kit, which is the J 29A/B Tunnan. I know a lot of folks will be happy to hear that, and the fact that it's going to be with us before the big Viggen should be a bonus! The projected release date is to be April/May, which isn't all that far away as we are already through the first week of March. I've already entreated them to scale it up to 1:48, but who listens to me? Sounds like things are progressing well at Tarangus - great news!
  21. For Swedish modeller, the announcement of AZ Models Tunnan was one of the best news ever. But if the happiness of the announcement was great, the sadness when it was finally released, was even greater. You do not have to be an expert on this Swedish jet Icon to see that the aircraft AZ released, was something completely different from the beautiful flying barrel of Sweden. Anyway, I bought it, hoping that someone would release a conversion in the future. Maestro also did, but this was just an expensive way to create a Tunnan that was just slightly better than AZ's original try. Recently AZ announced that a new, revised Tunnan will be released. So what should I do with my old one? Well, build it of course. This is the original AZ model: Many pointed out the nose as the problem. In my eyes however, the main problem is the oversized canopy. So I started the build to sand it down. I also made the cockpit opening larger. The picture below shows approximately where i cut/sanded. The yellow and orange lines are mine (don't bother about the other). After lots of sanding, it looked like this.
  22. This one was recently reviewed at Britmodeller (excellent review btw!). And here is a finished build with markings from F 13 wing, Norrköping, Sweden, late fifties: Being a short-run kit, this is really excellent. Great fit, almost no filler at all was needed and fine, recessed panel lines. And remembering the poor AZ Model kit in 1/48, I am happy to say that the shape is correct. Nothing bad? Well, the resin seat could have been better detailed, especially the back side. The panel behind the seat is also missing, but is easily made from plasticard. The resin wheel bays is a bit tricky to get in the right place - which is important if you don't want a leaning model... The price can be regarded as a bit high. However, the decals are brilliant. So no after-market decals are needed which means that you can get a great model OOB. If you like old jets, I can really recommend this one!
  23. Here are a few more pics on the Tunnan that I posted earlier today on the WIP section: F 4-53 or 29507 was the last Tunnan in service. Although the Swedish Tunnans were taken out of service in the late sixties, this one was kept in flying condition until 1976 when it did its last flights during the 50-year celebration of the Swedish Air Force. Before that, it served for a couple of years as target-tug, the yellow day-glow panels were applied at that time. Pictures from the build can be found here. It was more of an experiment, to see if it was possible to create something that is more similar to the real thing than AZ's disappointing model. Apart from the nose, the main landing gears had to be corrected, they are about 3 mm too long. The nose whel also had to be replaced since the one in the box is far too small. AZ have announced a new Tunnan. I hope they have better luck next time...
