  1. My main interest in aviation has to be the random British designs produced in the middle of the century. Designs that looked a bit too absurd to work but actually were rather ahead of its time, such as the EE Lightning, Vulcan, and the TSR-2. Overall the TSR has to be one of my all-time favourite aircraft. Summing it up as "Concorde but it carries nukes instead of passengers", I've always wanted to have a go at building one, and a few months ago I got the chance. If anyone has seen my previous blog of various projects they may have seen this already, but I'm slowly splitting each project into individual threads to make it more manageable. I picked this up on eBay for a relative bargain. Airfix produced a limited run of 1/48 TSRs back in the mid-2000s and they go for a fair bit these days. First thing I noticed was the sheer size of the thing, far bigger than I expected, far bigger than anything I've worked on recently. I had done some reading on the kit beforehand and understood that there were a few issues of which I've taken steps to rectify and will be explained along the way. The first step however was the cockpit. The parts included were rather bare, so I tried as hard as I can to track down a set of the Eduard photo-etch upgrades. This proved to be almost impossible until I found a shop in France which had one. If anyone can find a 1/48 Eduard PE set anywhere else I will genuinely be surprised. The set went together pretty well, although there was a rather large issue with the colouration, as the light blue doesn't seem to match any photos I've seen of the real thing. Matching the shade for the cockpit tub was a bit of a challenge until I found a suitable shade from P3 Frostbite. Photo below is before the fuselage interior was sprayed. And the front cockpit for reference. I was really indecisive on how far to go with the aftermarket upgrades, as the cost is really starting to build up, much like the real thing. I did take the plunge with the undercarriage bays however, as the difference is just too much to ignore. Also since this is likely to be the only TSR I'll ever build, why not go all-out a bit? Again you can see how much detail has been added with the resin parts. Overall I'm confident with the project, although I've encountered some hiccups that I'll go into next time. Given the short lifespan of the TSR however I may go down the "what-if" route a little, primarily with the payload. I've bought a nice pair of WE.177s from Shapeways that I may do up in the later green scheme. I know some purists may be frothing a little at this but it's more just to break up the huge areas of white a little more. Joe
  2. A mate and I decided we would both build a model of the iconic TSR-2 during COVID lockdown, so we both shelled out massively and bought the 2009 vintage Airfix 1/48 kit via ebay, only for me to realise when it arrived that the kit has some accuracy problems which required a number of aftermarket items and some fairly drastic plastic surgery to make a reasonable facsimile. The panel lines on this Hornby era kit are also more like tramlines and this means the end result looks very much like a diecast. I decided to build the only flying prototype XR219 in a clean configuration, with bomb bay doors, airbrakes and main gear doors closed, because this best fits my recollection of the sleek aircraft that broke this 8 year old boy's heart when it was cancelled in 1965😒 Here's hoping someone like Eduard will bring out a higher quality kit that better represents this iconic subject. Aftermarket items used were: CMK 4220 TSR-2 Interior Set - Includes replacement vac formed canopies and windscreen, detailed ejection seats, colour photo etched instrument panels and instrument coaming. My first time working with vac form canopies, but they seemed to come out OK and I do like the thinner scale profile. As I suspected, the extra cockpit detail was however lost once the canopies were in place. Scale Aircraft Conversions SAC48026 White metal UC set- These do correct the angle of the main gear oleos, but rather disappointingly are in all other respects a direct copy of the rather crude and somewhat inaccurate kit parts. Armory AR AW48413 Wheels - Weight on resin wheels with some nicely detailed "drop in" photoetch hubs. Alleycat Models Odds and Ordnance OAO 48001 Fin and Tail-planes - The fin has the cooling air intake that's missing in the Airfix kit and the tail planes have better shaped flap actuator housings than the kit parts Air Master AM-48-118 Pitot tube - A finer and more robust replacement of the kit part. I accidently bent it within minutes of fitting it, but was able to bend it back into shape. The plastic part was way to wodgey and would have snapped easily! Paints used: Tamiya grey rattle can primer coat mig acrylic white Future clear coat Surgery involved removing the dorsal "dromedary hump" on the fuselage wing interface, substantially narrowing the cross section of the aft-forward fuselage where it meets the wing and removing the un-aerodynamic step in each intake trunk. Although there may have been enough material to file and sand back the "hump", I elected to cut it out with scalpel plus razor saw and replace the offending section with plastic card. At this point I thought the job was done, but when dry fit checking the assembly I noticed that the spacing of the longitudinal panel lines on the upper forward fuselage was wider than the spacing of their companion panel lines on the wing upper mid section. A BAC 3 view GA drawing clearly showed these panel lines should run parallel and continue at a fixed width through to the wing junction. I hummed and ahhd over the problem for a couple of nights but finally took the plunge and removed a wedge of plastic from each fuselage half with a razor saw. I only cut wedges out from the upper fuselage and in retrospect it may have resulted in less distortion if I'd also narrowed the bottom fuselage. Interestingly, narrowing the fuselage allowed the intakes to be easily set away from the fuselage sides to better replicate the boundary layer splitter plate gap missing in the kit built out of the box. Although the resultant fuselage side profile was much improved, there is still the hint of a hump if you look closely enough. I'd approach these issues slightly differently if I were to build this kit again, but overall I'm happy with the end result, although I still have work to do improving my paint finishes as this was the first subject I finished using a new H&S Infinity CR+ airbrush. Apologies for the model's dusty appearance in the photo's, but I have yet to identify a large enough display case for this one.
  3. Hello all, I have finally finished the kit I started a year ago for the Sharkmouth GB. For one reason or another, I lost interest in this kit as it just kept on fighting me. To say the that the Airfix 1/72 TSR-2 is a pig of a kit is an understatement! I guess it didn't help that I added aftermarket bits to it. At one point, the kit actually flew off the table in the garden and nose dived into the patio. I had to deal with a snapped flap/tailplane and the wing joint had cracked along the back as well. Original build thread is here. I have learned a lot from this build and I will probably revisit it in a few years time as I have another one of these in the stash. You never know, by then Airfix might've released a new version (heres hoping!). Any and all feedback welcome. Not really sure if this should in be here in the Sci-Fi RFI or Aircraft RFI? Kit used : Airfix 1/72 TSR-2MS Stratos 4. Aftermarket : CMK Resin Engines, tailplanes, flaps, engine intakes, airbrakes and electronics bay. Paint : White... white and more bloody white... I used @Navy Bird great buld here for a lot of the references and pitfalls. But my kit decided to throw more at me. I also stole the idea of using a light grey oil wash for the panel lines. I am more or less happy with this side. It hasn't worked in other places as I have oblierated all the panel lines with my multiple layers of primer/paint. I did try to add some detail to the wheelbay. really hard to get a picture of it where you can see what I did. I also added breaklines to the wheels (5 of them!) but it was hard to see what happened to them. Even my trip to see the real one at RAF Cosford didn't help. And just for fun below a picture of the real one (this is a picture I took on my visit to RAF Cosford). Even at rest she looks fast as hell... Any and all feedback is welcome. Kind Regards, Dazz
  4. Lost British Projects & Icelandic Fine Art are to release a 1/32nd BAC TSR-2 3D resin kit Source: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=698233960663117&id=566804443806070 V.P.
  5. What's happened to Mastercasters as their website has disappeared? Does anyone have an idea where I can get hold of a set of Mastercasters 1/48 TSR-2 Aux intakes???
  6. Does anyone know where I can lay my hands some information on the TSR-2 tow-bar e.g. photos etc, I need to find information on the yoke or head end of the piece of equipment because all the images are very blurred. So, does anyone have any photos of the yoke or head end of the this tow-bar? Also, does anyone have any information/ images of this tow-bar attached to the nose-gear of a TSR-2??? Another thing that I'd like to find photos of is detailed pictures of the crew boarding ladders because I'd like to find out some information as to why there appears to be several types used?? in some photos the ladders have a handle standing proud, whilst in other photos the handles are absent????? Why?? Did the TSR-2 have any dedicated Ground Support Equipment(GSE) and what would have been a typical GSE support package????
  7. Hello, Does anyone have any information on the Bluewater Missile which was a proposed missile that would have come in 2 varieties:- a) Surface to surface Missile Air to surface missile The Surface to Surface version would have been launched from the back of a truck (possibly the good old Bedford RL), whilst the Air to Surface version would have been launched from the TSR-2. in ether case it was intended as a tactical strike that may have had a Nuclear or conventional warhead! Does anyone have photos or information on this project etc.??
  8. Hi Mastercasters make a set of resin engine intakes/ Auxiliary Intake Doors (MPN 48033) for the Airfix 1/48 TSR-2 and they have been sold directly from their website and also through Hannants! However, this set is currently out of stock and it's uncertain if and when they'll be available again! So, Does anyone know where I can get hold of a set?? Regards
  9. I'm planning a future project for my second TSR-2 in 48th scale, getting all the detail sets etc, and will be adding my own detailing, opening up more panels etc.. anyway, I'm just curious if anyone has, or knows of, any photos of any of the airframes in their primer colours rather than the usual white? I have found a couple of pics in the Crowood book, which show the top sides of one of them, but I don't know if any even exist of the sides or undersurfaces in any other reference materials. I would imagine there is a finite amount of official (or otherwise) photos taken at the time, and I suspect what I have in my handful of books is pretty much the cream of he crop. TIA
  10. Pitot and Refuelling Probes 1:32/1:48/1:72/1:144 Master Having released the Sukhoi collection, Master Models have also recently released several sets for Western aircraft, with particular emphasis on the three V Bombers in both 1:72 and 1:144. [AM-32-090] – This pack contains two parts to build up the pitot probe and fairing for the Italeri 1:32 Mirage II. Rather than brass, the two parts have been turned in alluminium and is a simple direct replacement for the kit part. [AM-48-118] – Another simple replacement pitot probe, this time for the Airfix 1:48 BAC TSR-2, it may have been along time in coming, but it is, nevertheless, a very welcome addition. [AM-72-097/AM-144-009] – These two sets have been designed for the Airfix 1:72 and any of the 1:144 kits from the likes of Micro-Mir, Anigrand or Welsh Models. Each set contains two very fine pitot probes to replace the slightly clunky kit items. [AM-72-098/AM-144-010] – These sets contain only one item, the prominent refuelling probe. The 1:72 for he Airfix kit and the 1:144 for either the Anigrand or Great Wall Hobby kits. Unfortunately even though they are meant to be different scales the review samples re exactly he same size, so do check when you buy your 1:144 as it would be absolutely massive when compared to even the kit part. In each case though, you will need to cut the kit part where it joins the nose fairing, drill out the hole then fit the metal part before adding to the model. [AM-72-099/AM-144-011] – The last of the V bomber sets is naturally for the Victor, either the Matchbox/Revell 1:72 kit or the Anigrand/Welsh Models kits. Whilst he 1:72 set contains the two wing tip mounted pitot probes and the probe end piece for the refuelling probe, the 1:144 set does provide the whole refuelling probe as well as the pitot probes. Conclusion Five more very useful additions to the Master Models range. If you thought the 1:72 scale stuff was small, you really should check out the 1:144 scale parts. I would love to know how they produce such small items, with such finesse of detail. Very highly recommended Review sample courtesy of Piotr at
  11. Good afternoon everyone, On Sunday I went to Cosford and picked up, among other things, an Airfix 1:72 TSR-2 and a Pit Road 1:144 TSR-2 "Strike Role". So, seen as I'm planning on doing the 1:72 TSR-2 as my local Cosford example, I thought- why not utilise the 1:144 kit's belly fuel tank and martel missiles to create a "what-if" variant? Based on other info on the internet: This is my interpretation of the TSR-2 GR4 as it could have served in the 1990-1 Gulf War. it is fitted with a targetting "pod" underneath the nose of the cockpit and a retractable refuelling probe on the side of the cockpit, as well as the 4 underwing pylons with Martel missiles. -RBF tags and engine nozzle FOD covers made from paper -Paint was mixed from a variety of Vallejo Air colours -Decals from the Airfix Buccaneer (And the obligatory comparison with a 1p coin) Thanks for having a look! Any comments are much appreciated. Kind regards, Sam
  12. Good evening all, Just been to Bruntingthorpe's cold war jets day-superb stuff! Anyway the point is, I picked up a 1:48 TSR-2 for £28 and I was wondering what sort of things I should probably look out for in terms of building the kit (fit issues, etc)? I was thinking of not painting the kit (seen as it is moulded in white plastic) mainly because whenever I have sprayed stuff white in the past, thousands of dust particles suddenly appear on my previously white model and are trapped by the paint when it dries. So, what do you think of that? Is that ok for getting a decent finish on the model? I have also heard rumours that the landing gear can break rather easily, is this true? Thanks, apologies for any grammatical mistakes -i'm rather tired! Sam
  13. Just been to Tesco and saw the above mag lots of pics some plans looks nice didn't get it myself not sure if need it but might pick it up at the end of the week if they still have some. Dek.
