  1. Metallic Detais has just released a 1/48th USN loading cart with torpedo Mk-46 resin kit - ref. MDR4851 Sources: http://metdetails.com/catalog/metalic-details/accessory/148/mdr4851-usn-loading-cart-torpedo-mk-46 https://www.facebook.com/metdetails/posts/1283085681902448 V.P.
  2. So just some thoughts going round in my head for possible future builds. Torpedo bombers based in Malta? wellingtons, swordfish and Beauforts, I know of but have very little knowledge and can find very little reference info (it’s malta so that makes sense) as to what they looked like. I know wellingtons were 38 and 221 sqn and worked at night so pretty much guarantee black lower surfaces. But any info on marks? I’ve found a few pics of wellies being loaded with fish and they appear to have their front turret removed. swordfish were, 815, 828 (mainly albacore?) and 830 from what I can find and preformed many roles, recce of shipping, mine laying, and assault of shipping with torp’s and bombs. I’m sure I’ve seen a few profiles of them as black with camo uppers, maybe one with an M on it’s tail? beaforts I have a fair idea on, and have transfers for two options.... but no kit.... any way any info on wellingtons and swordfish flying out of Malta world be helpful? Anyone build any representations of these? cheers in advance Rob
  3. Hello all, I'm building the Trumpy 1/32 Swordfish Mk I, and I have a couple of questions mainly regarding British torpedos. 1. On most photos, the steering vanes are absent on the torpedos being carried by Swordfish. They are present on some, but on others, you can see the fixed portion of the tail appendage, the twin screws, and nothing behind them. Was it common practice on aerial torpedos to remove the steering gear as they were only intended to go in a straight line? Did the crew have anyway to set a course for the torpedo as a warship or submarine could, or did they just trust it to run straight? 2. Color schemes for torpedos. Is there any kind of standard scheme for warhead colors on torpedos in the Royal Navy. I assume the body is polished and oiled steel, but what color were the warheads? 3. In the center cockpit of the Swordfish, there is a long lever on the right side that according to the instructions leans to the front. Try as I can, I can find no info on this lever on the internet. Just for info, does anyone know what it's for? Thanks in advance for your time.
  4. Calling all Swordfish experts! I am building the Tamiya Swordfish floatplane and I was happily going to depict it carrying the torpedo as shown on the boxart and on various drawings in my references and on the net. By coincidence I was doing some reading on the Warspite at Narvik which is one of my next projects - the book I was perusing was "Warspite" by Ian Ballantyne. I was reading the account of the exploits of the Swordfish floatplane that Warspite had at the time, and I was surprised at the following statement by the pilot P.O.Fred Rice who had just spotted a U boat { U64} and I quote " With floats on a Swordfish you couldn't carry a torpedo. What we carried was 250lbs armour piercing bombs " { page 98}. Surely the pilot should know - are all the drawings etc. wrong? I have quite a lot of reference on the Swordfish, so I went through looking for photographs of floatplanes carrying torpedoes and could only find three, all of K5662, the first Swordfish on floats - two in the "in action" title and one in an Air enthusiast mag.Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks in advance, Malcolm
  5. Evening, Final bits n pieces fitted this afternoon, and I'm calling this done. Built straight out the box, decals and all. Only additions were some tape seat belts, oh and I cheated on the canopy masking with an Eduard set. Flory models panel line wash and weathered further with pastels. I have already noticed a couple of omissions, the gear doors are a tad too clean. Given their location aft of the the lower side of the engine, I suspect these would be far from clean! I have left the wire antenna off just now as the mast had not set when I took the pics. Lessons learnt.......again, must fit, blend and polish the nav lights way before we get to the painting stage! Fortunately the fit wasn't too bad but it's still really noticeable that these have been fitted at the end. Anyway here's a few pics taken in the sun this afternoon, yes, sun again, no snow today just hail earlier! Hope you like her Had to do a wee bit of taxiing and marshalling to find her a wee spot on the shelf though! Thanks, Eng
  6. I'm building the new Airfix Beaufighter in the box's Coastal Command scheme. I've noticed that while the instructions have a painting guide for the scheme's torpedo, they don't indicate a colour for the torpedo's monoplane air tail (MAT) - the bit that attached onto the end of the torpedo. I dimly recall that the build in AMW may have painted this a bronzey colour but as MATs were made from plywood this seems a bit unlikely. The picture about halfway down this page suggests that its MAT is a light colour, possibly the same colour as the Beaufighter's belly (so presumably Sky). Does anyone know if that's the case?
  7. Does anyone have any good photos or profiles of Ju 88A-17s? Preference would be to a machine used in the North against the Murmansk convoys. Try as I might, I haven't been able to find many pictures of this purpose built Ju 88 torpedo bomber. In addition, were all '88s in regular 70/71 paint scheme or were some of them painted in 72/73? Much Thanks
  8. US Navy Mk.14 Torpedo, pics thanks to Mike Costello.
  9. Hey all So I'm just about finished my Accurate Miniatures Avenger (In the Academy box) and I've decided that seeing as how the Avenger was designed as a torpedo bomber, it just makes sense to put a big ol' Mk.13 Torpedo in the weapons bay as opposed to standard GP bombs. As the Academy boxing only comes with bombs, I've sourced a very nice resin torpedo from True Details, however, I'll be damned if I know how to mount the darn thing in the weapons bay. I've tried every combination of "torpedo, avenger, mount, etc" in Google that I can think of, but to no avail. That is why now, I rest my fate in the paint and cyanoacrylate covered hands of my fellow (brit)modellers... Regards, KHood
  10. Airborne Torpedoes and Trolleys Master Models 1:350 Having built a large and impressive model, say of an aircraft carrier, it sometimes feels that there is something missing. Yes, you could add some or even a lot of crew, but what about flightdeck equipment, airborne weapons etc. Well Master Models have just released these two sets that will go some way to liven up, or set the scene on the flightdeck or even the hanger. Both sets provide ten Mark 13 torpedoes and more importantly, their transport trolleys. The differences in each set are the change in airborne torpedo tails which is why there are separate early and late type in these sets. The trolleys and torpedo tails are in etch brass, while the torpedo bodies have been produced in turned brass. When combined with suitable crew these will look superb whether arming a Devastator or an Avenger or just parked in the weapons park. Conclusion These are two great little sets that provide that extra life on a flightdeck. The trolleys and torpedo tails look like they will be a little fiddly to make up, but as usual with these types of builds, plenty to care and patience will reap rewards. Then all you have to do is work out what scenario you are going to use them. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of Piotr at
  11. This is a little sideline project for when i need a change from planes. Bought from Modelzone in their sale for a very good price. I have been wanting one of these for a while but never had the cash , so this showed up at the right time. Im building it as mtb 234 because i like the mid blue camo. 234 had 3 rudders and an oerlikon gun mounted on the bow. The gun will be comming from accurate armour when i get some cash. I have followed the build of the 1/72 one in the new Airfix mag regarding the rudders , but i have seen others building the center one with a shaft the same length as the other two , so im not sure which is correct , if anyone know please let me know. Heres the scratch built rudder. Not perfect but good enough for me. It needs the control arm from the stb rudder adding yet.
  12. Having purchased the Italeri 1/35 Vosper MTB i was wondering if there are any good sites with detail photos etc? TIA
