Since I have to print just a couple of decals for the F-106B and wanted to use up the rest of the decal sheet, I scratched around for interesting options and landed on Honeywell's Boeing 757 testbed N757HW. There's a good photo of it here: https://flic.kr/p/29Sx7kY (not mine so only sharing the link). I might be crazy trying to start another build now, but the basic kit won't take long, it's a simple colour scheme to paint as long as I get the decals right (I've drafted a set already), just have to scratch build the test engine and its pylon. I'm using the Zvezda 1/144 757 - forgot to take photos before I started so no box shot - looks like a lovely kit. I started by installing the cockpit, which won't be visible as I'll use window decals but it supports the nose gear well, and added the fuselage windows. A bit of weight added to the nose and the fuselage can be closed up. Wings went together easily as well. So here I am after about half an hour's modelling: The basic airframe build really isn't going to take long. Whether I can get it finished by the end of the GB will wings on the decals and the scratch building of the test engine. more soon Julian

Here's my Zvezda Boeing 757 with a difference! It's Honeywell's testbed, N757HW, which has flown in various configurations including this one, with a TPE-331 turboprop on the pylon on the forward fuselage. The turboprop is 3D-printed but it seemed simpler to make the fairing at the base of the pylon from milliput. The main decals (including the tiny sharkmouth on the turboprop!) are home-made, windows and detail decals are from a 26 Decals set. This was built in the Prototypes, Research etc group build, build thread is here. This was a fun build - the Zvezda kit is very nice, and I stretched my 3D-printing and decal designing skills a bit. thanks for looking Julian

My third build will be a Trumpeter 1/72 F-106B, to be built as NASA 616, which was used to study inlet and nozzle designs for the supersonic transport programme in the 1960s. They mounted two General Electric J85 engines (as used on the T-38 and F-5) and tested several different intake and nozzle designs on the one on the left, with a standard intake and nozzle on the right. Here's a NASA photo: I'm going to build it in the configuration in the photo, with the conical "plug" nozzle on the test engine. I'll make the engines on the 3D printer, and I've found NASA test reports online that include drawings to work from. I'm probably a week or two away from starting, but will be getting on with it soon. Julian

For my entry I intend to use decals from this sheet: to build Harrier GR5 ZD402 in the very nice midnight blue and white scheme when used by Rolls Royce in the development of the Pegasus 11-16/Mk 107 engine destined for the Harrier GR9. I haven’t decided on a kit yet, I have the Italeri GR5 and also the Revell boxing of the same kit, but these do not include the under fuselage strakes, only the gun pods. I also have, if I can find it, the Airfix GR5 which has the option of the strakes- but it seems to have gone missing. If I cant find it I’ll have to use the Italeri kit and pinch the strakes out of an Airfix GR7/GR9 kit. AW

Here's my Lancaster B.II, just finished in the Lancaster STGB. Build thread is here. It's the Airfix kit, built as LL735, which was the testbed for the Metrovick F.2/4 engine (which went on to power the Saunders Roe SR.A/1 and was ultimately developed into the Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire) in the early postwar years. Conversion parts were 3D printed, and it's mostly finished with AK Extreme Metal (I think the only exception is the high speed silver where the spars were over-painted). This was my first go at 3D printing - the CAD for some of the complex shapes was a bit tricky, but it was a lot of fun. Thanks for looking Julian
