  1. Hello team, I'm planning on doing a CAC Sabre Mk 32 using the Tasman conversion with the Academy F-86F kit. I plan on chopping the aft end of the fuselage off the Academy kit and fitting that to the Tasman kit to get the open airbrakes similar to what Courageous did a few years ago with their CAC Sabre (I couldn't work out how to link a WIP thread). In regards to the Academy kit the shape of the airbrake bays need adjusting from a square to a tapered lower edge. Does anybody know the size or angle of the airbrake? If anyone has done this, how did you go about it? Any info would be great. Thanks. JG.
  2. Hello, this is a late entry for a subject very rarely seen built in modelling forums. I had this kit in my stash for nearly twenty years and I thought this could be the right chance to finally build it. Let's start with an overview of the box contents: The package is really rich, but coming to the really important things you need a good stomach! On top of this I have two fantastic canopies, still perfectly transparent after all this time but... badly crushed! Unfortunately the flimsy box did nothing to protect them and when I received the kit (second hand) I could do nothing to replace them from the manufacturer since the kit was already out of production. So plan A always was to mould my copy after duplicating with Milliput the original shape as best as I could. More of that later. Ok, this is the starting point and here below you can see the main pieces after a quick clean up. Thank you for looking!
  3. I'm going to build a Heller 1/72 Dragon Rapide. This is just a placeholder for now - I won't get to this until my builds in the Lancaster STGB and In The Navy GB are done. I built one of these some time in the mid-80s. I don't really remember the build, it's buying the kit that I really remember: My Mum was a French teacher and very keen that we go to France on holiday and practice our French. So on a trip to Normandy some time in the 80s (might have been 1985) when I wanted to try and find this kit, instead of browsing the shelves of French model shops I had to go to the counter and ask if they had it, in French. Despite my probably terrible pronunciation I did actually manage to buy one! This will be in the Tasman boxing - currently available and reasonably priced - with SBS photo-etched rigging and decals for Railway Air Services from Arctic Decals. I may not remember the 1980s build very well but I can confidently say I didn't do any rigging or use any aftermarket! cheers Julian
  4. After building a number of Sabres, I thought it was about time I built myself an Avon Sabre. The Avon Sabre was based on the then current F-86F with the slatted wing but was fitted with the more powerful Rolls Royce powerplant and this required an extension change to the fuselage. This book came in handy for this and future builds. So to kick things off, I'll be using the Tasman Conversion set alongside the Academy F-86E Kit. I have been told that the Tasman conversion isn't the best route to go but as I have a number of them, I'll be using them. Tasman's fuselage halves and intake. Look at those sprue gates, I'll need to take my time and be careful or I'll be making work for myself. ...and Academy's fuselage sprue...not much difference eh. You may be wondering why I'm showing you this sprue if it isn't used. Well, Aussie Sabres are normally parked with the brakes open and as the Tasman's offering is molded closed, the plan is to swap the tail sections . Academy's wing sprue. Work to be on these will be to backdate the wing to pre 6-3 conversion and to remove the flaps as again, these were often deployed when on ground. Main sprue with everything else. Canopies. The Tasman kit comes with a Vac canopy and although it is lovely and clear, it's closed and I like my aircraft canopies open...unless they're hanging from the ceiling. The middle canopy is Hobbycraft and the top is Academy... we'll see. Decals will be sorted later, hopefully. So, that's it for now and I'll start proper when the Vampire is finished. Stuart

I am going to build a MiG-17F as a fighter bomber as used by Egypt in the war of attrition against Israel form the 6 days war of 67 up to the 1973 war to reclaim the Sinai peninsula. good in interesting reading from the arab/ not so well known point of view: Arab MiGs vol. 1-5 from Harpia publishing first dilema: which camouflage scheme to do? Egypt started to camouflage its aircraft right after the 67 war for good reasons. in the beginning quite crudely with light blue/ light grey undersides and sand/green/brown upper sides. hardly all aircrasft seem to be different. Later the famous nile valley scheme started to appear... to make matters more complicated, up to 1972? the roundels of the UARAF (United Arab Republic Air Force) Then the 2 stars of the roundels deleted and the flag usually carried on the tail received the so called Eagle of Saladin... I have decals for those... or could search for the older ones on other sheets. Here is what I have for now: kit with some necessary accessories and the kit's decals. looks good so far... fuselage with deep panel lines but quite nice shape: and the all important ordnance for a egyptian aircraft: unguided 76mm sakr rockets only available in the SMER kit additionally fuselage bomb pylons and bombs (to be replaced I think with aerobonus or similar) as well as 57 mm rocket pods. I bought more sheets than necessary... Hi Decal upper left, ILIAD upper right, SMER low: looking at the Eagle of Saladin in detail though: the kit decal look more childish, don't they? Hi Decals chose to do a very different eagle with a black outline, whereas Iliad design did a sheet for the Mig-15UTI with a red / gold outlined eagle.(apart from that, it is to be used for an aircraft of the 6 days war of 67....) so, which ones to use? or should I ditch them all and use the UARAF 2 stars and go for an "early" war of attrition?
