  5. My daughter got me this wonderful kit for Christmas. It has re-kindled my interest in WWI aircraft. The kit's painting guide is very basic so I bought this Eduard Kit in the hope I will get a painting guide and some nice decals. Thanks for looking. Stephen
  6. Dear Colleagues I recently finished a kit I had half finished several years ago. These were the days of nylon thread and I have now moved to the much more forgiving Uschi van der Rosten lycra. The markings are for the famous ace Georges Guynemer. I calmed down the look and markings with an overspray of the Gunze Israeli sand colour Shame people don't seem to do so much 1/72 WWI biplanes these days. Must try an Airfix BE2c though. Hope you like it? Andrew
  7. Legie - SPAD XIII čs pilotů 1:72 Eduard(2126) Limited Edition In 1916 Georges Guynemer became well known in France as a flying ace with a rapidly rising score of kills, some 25 by the end of the year. He wrote to the SPAD company in late 1916 criticising their VII model for being inferior its German opponents, and his reputation ensured that his concerns were taken seriously. SPAD introduced a number of developments to the aircraft, enlarging it slightly and fitting a more powerful engine and increasing the armament. Two versions were created, the SPAD XII armed with a 37mm canon firing through the propeller shaft, and the more conventionally armed SPAD XIII with two Vickers machine guns. The XII / XIII was heavier and less manoeuvrable than the VII, but had a better climb rate and top speed. Of the two the XIII was produced in far greater numbers, and achieved widespread use by a number of air forces during and after the Great War. The kit. This Limited Edition release from Eduard concentrates on SPAD XIIIs flown by Czech pilots during and after the Great War. Presented in Eduard’s familiar sturdy box, the artwork features one wartime and one post war machine, both in the attractive camouflage scheme typical of French aircraft of this period. Within the box are two large grey coloured plastic sprues, protected in a re-sealable bag, a small clear sprue, a fret of pre-painted photo etched parts, a small set of kabuki tape masks, a decal sheet, and an instruction booklet. First impressions are of how small and delicate the model is in this scale, and how fine and detailed the mouldings are. Sprue A. This contains the main airframe parts for the wings, fuselage, fin/rudder, and cowling ring. All are superbly moulded with sharp detail and no sign of sink marks or flash. Like their 1:48 scale version of this aeroplane. Eduard have moulded the fuselage in two halves... ...with a third piece for the top, including the tailplanes. Having built a few of the 1:48 version, I can verify that this works extremely well and eliminates any possibility of a seam showing along the top of the fuselage. I wish a few more manufacturers would do this as it is very effective. The wings are beautifully thin with fine rib detail and well defined sockets for the struts to fit into. Final pieces are the front cowling ring, cockpit floor & top cutout, seat, and ammo chutes. Sprue B This has all the smaller detail parts such as wheels, guns, exhausts, struts, etc, all very neatly moulded. Several parts are marked on the instructions as not for use, either because they are options or because the etched fret contains replacements. The cockpit is provided with a wealth of very fine detail, and as it is a mixture of wood, brass, and aluminium colours, it should look spectacular. Also provided are decals for all the instrument faces, with the option of using the pre-painted items from the etched fret if you prefer. The etch fret also supplies pre painted seat belts, making this a very detailed cockpit indeed for such a small scale. Sprue C There are two very small windscreen, of which only no. 2 is applicable to all four options. Etch The photo etched fret contains many pre-painted items, such as the previously mentioned instrument faces and seatbelts. The aileron cranks are also provided, as are the louvered engine side panels. Mask On yellow Kabuki tape, pre cut masks are provided for the windscreen and both sides of the wheel hubs, which should make simple work of painting the tyres. Options Four options are give, two each from Czech pilots who flew as volunteers with French Air Force during the Great War, and two from the post war Czech Air Force with the large ‘flag’ markings replacing the French roundels. All four wear the attractive brown/sand/green French style camouflage, with the wartime machines having clear doped linen undersides, while the Czech machines have silver undersides. A. S2807, flown by Adj. Augustin Charvát, Spa.315, Chaux, France, September 1918. B. S 8875, flown by Adj. Václav Pilát, Spa.124, France, fall 1918. C. No. 9151, flown by Cpl. Bohumil Siegl, 33rd Squadron, Air Regiment 2, Lípa Airfield near Nemecký Brod, Czechoslovakia, September 1st, 1924. D. No. 9152, flown by Sgt. František Lehký, 32nd Squadron, Air Regiment 1, Blíževedly Airfield, Czechoslovakia, August 28th, 1924. Decals. Good colours, pin sharp printing, thin and with minimal carrier film. Well up to Eduard’s usual high standards. It is nice to see that the shade of French blue on the rudder stripe and roundels look correct. Conclusion. A well thought out and presented kit that should build up into a real little jewel of a model . It looks to be based on Eduards larger 1:48 scale SPAD XIII, of which I have made three without encountering any problems. Rigging in this scale is down to personal preference, but I would recommend fine heat stretched sprue as probably being the easiest. Just measure the lengths with a pair of dividers, and attach with small blobs of white glue, using fine tweezers to place each one. It is a very complete package with etched details and kabuki masks included, and a wise choice of colour schemes. The two post war Czech machines will appeal to those who like really unusual schemes, whilst the two wartime ones will satisfy those who like the more familiar. Probably better suited to modellers at medium skill level rather than the beginner, due to the struts and rigging. (Should 1:72 not be your scale, don't worry - Eduard have also released this in 1:48 scale with the same markings). Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of Footnote. As a modeller I am as much interested in the personalities around the aircraft, as I am in the aircraft themselves. Given Guynemers’ connection to the SPAD XIII and the fact Eduard also do a ‘Weekend’ edition of this kit in his markings, I thought a few words here might spark some further interest. Like many Great War aviators, Georges Guynemer was a fascinating character. Born into an aristocratic family, he was rejected many times for military service due to his frailty and poor health. Through fierce determination and strength of character he got himself accepted as a mechanic, and later on to pilot training. He went on to become one of the Great War’s highest scoring aces, with a final tally of 53 victories. A very quiet and modest man who disliked publicity, but who believed very strongly in serving his country. Tired and exhausted, he was shot down and killed on 11 September 1917, at the age of 22. The whereabouts of his aircraft and his body remain unknown. Amazingly, one of Guynemers actual SPAD VII’s survives to this day, and I was able to photograph it a few years ago it in the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace at Le Bourget, Paris. It is an amazing museum with some very special and rare aircraft in its collection. Well worth the trip if you can make it. A priceless treasure; Those fiddly aileron cranks on the lower wing:

  10. Hi all, Been ages since I posted anything but to try and get back in the swing here's an original vintage 1960's Revell build of Eddie Rickenbacker's SPAD XIII. The build was done as part of a fun "build a beast" competition at my hobby club. Members select obscure/difficult/potentially horrible/fiddly and awful kits that go into a Secret Santa and participants basically have a lucky dip blind draw to choose their "beast" to build over the summer break and present at the first new year meeting early Feb. Out of about 20+ starters I think about 12 kits ended up making it to show......I guess the rest of the builds languished in despair and grief! New things I tried... Rigging a bi-plane for the first time and painting the roundels. Masks for the roundels were done on self adhesive vinyl with my next door neighbours laser cutter which saved me after I destroyed the kit supplied decals! Anyway here's my build......and yes.....It nearly did my head in! Thanks for looking. Cheers
  11. Photo Etch for SPAD XIII 1:48 Eduard Eduard's Spad XIII is a beautiful and highly detailed kit which has been released in several versions, from 'Weekend' to 'Profipack' under their own label, and a few years ago was also issued by Revell. This new set from Eduard is labeled on the packet as 'For Revell Kit' and on the instructions as 'for Revell / Eduard kit' , which is no surprise as the plastic in both kits is identical. The etched set is pre-painted where appropriate, which means the seat belts, map, several instruments, and leather lifting straps for the rear fuselage. Unpainted elements are throttle, gun jackets and sights, 2 types of windscreen frames, propeller hubs, and most importantly the fine grilles on the cowling sides. Clear acetate sheet is provided for the windscreens themselves. All are very finely done to the Eduards normal high standard, and as they have been produced for a kit they designed themselves, the fit should be exact. I have built several Eduard Spad X.III's, both the early and late versions in 'Profipack' releases which contain etched brass frets very similar to this one, although without the gun jackets and windscreens. They really enhanced the models, particularly the cowling side screens which just cannot be done any other way to give such an accurate and pleasing result. Charles Nungesser. Frank Luke Eddie Rickenbacker So if you have Revell or Eduard 'Weekend' issue, this latest set will be an essential addition. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  12. Usually i build models so that i can sell them on built up to pay for the next one. This one is a keeper! I love it. Its Trumpeters 1/32 A-1J. It has been built straight from the box with no faffing. I seem to have gone off weathering too. Im happy with just exhaust streaks. It is what it is , a plastic model. Great build with no problems at all. Im so impressed i am just starting a Trumpeter 1/32 A-1H , which again will be straight from the box but with gun bays open , engine shutters closed but cowling open and wings folded. I havent put the seat in this one yet , i will leave that for another day. I was too lazy to mask the camo so i just airbrushed it freehand.
  13. After a brief spell away to play a bit of golf & concentrate on other bits & pieces I've decided to delve into my stash & start model making again. There's no way I can match the skills of most of you guys on here, so I was looking to find a way of seeing if I am actually improving. One of the plus points of having 5 kids, all of whom nod approvingly at my attempts, but really take not interest at all, is that I quite often get given kits that I've made before & so this will be my second attempt at the revell 1/72 SPAD XIII. One day I'll progress to WNW and all that stuff, but for now I'm keeping it simple. Here's my first attempt at this kit from 3 years ago. And as this is going to take a while (remember I do have 5 kids), here are some pics of my 'office' which is most definitely in need of a tidy up before I start. OK - it's a mess & task 1 is to clear that desk....
  14. Well here are a few shots I managed to get of my latest effort. The sun was out, so I was expecting to get a few more shots, but unfortunately I didn't take all environmental conditions into account & the 'photoshoot' was halted quite abruptly..... All was going well. The pictures were taken using a bit of floor underlay as the base & a bit of wood as the background. I turned away to change my lens...... There was a gust of wind & the piece of wood toppled over And that was the end of that one. WIP is available here ...... wanders off muttering unrepeatable words
  15. After the Ansaldo Balilla A1 (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234969869-132-ansalado-a1-balilla) a 1/32nd Spad XIII resin kit by Aviattic? 16. Hi, This is my latest work - Eduard's Spad XIII late in 1/48th scale. Very nice kit while still in the box, but once assembly has started... Let's just say I haven't build a model kit that's as complicated and demanding as this one. Profipack box, PE and some masks included. Gaspatch spanners were used as well as EZ Line for rigging. Rudder and roundels were masked and painted to match. Few pic while in progress... And few pics when it's done... All comments and critiques are wellcome. It'll be helpful on my next project - WNW Felixstowe in 1/32. Regards, Kristijan
  17. Sopwith Camel and SPAD XIII Revel 1/28 The Models Both of these kits date back to the late fifties, the SPAD from 1957 and the Camel from 1959, and boy does it show on opening the flaps of the end opening boxes. The open sprues give the game away straight away and the rather crude moulding. That said though, the details are quite well done although the wing ribs are a little prominent on both kits and could do with sanding down a bit. There is quite a lot of flash present, but not as much as the age of the moulds might suggest, they have obviously been stored well. SPAD There aren’t too many parts and both follow a similar order of build. The engines are quite nicely detailed with the cooling fins looking really rather good. Add to that the push rods etc and they will make nice representations. The scale of these kits will make them a nice size to work with and with a fair amount of patience, care and probably some filler they will look good in a display case. They also give the modeller a chance to scratch build a lot of detail should they wish to really go to town on them. The figures provided are very basic and could do with some resculpting, but they will add a bit of interest to the final display. The kits come with either black or white thread, or in the case of the Camel, both, for the rigging, which even in this scale looks a little too large, and quite fluffy, so you may wish to replace them with suitable modelling rigging line or fishing line. Camel Decals Each kit comes with a nicely printed decal sheet, being in register, nicely opaque and with very little carrier film. The roundels on the Camel sheet have some sort of texturing on them, making them look a little rough. Both sheets have been printed in the Czech Republic and are quite matt so will probably need a good setting and soaking solution to get them to bed down properly. The kits come with the option of two colour schemes:- Sopwith Camel of No.10 squadron, RNAS, based at Teteghem, France, March 1918 Sopwith Camel of No.45 squadron, RFC, based at Istrana, Italy, early 1918 SPAD XIII Ser.No. S.7714, flown by Capt R. Soubrian, of the 103rd Aero Squadron, 3rd Pursuit Group, USAS, based at Lisle-en-Barrois, France November 1918 SPAD XIII, Ser.No.7799, flown by 1/Lt Long, 93rd Aero Squadron, 3rd Pursuit Group, USAS, France, October 1918. Conclusion If you take into account the age of these kits before you buy them you won’t be shocked at what you find in the box. I’m sure they can and will provide many hours of enjoyment for those that have to have a larger scale model of these aircraft in their collection. They are not as basic as some models from that era, and they do have potential for more detail to be added, so if you fancy a challenge, or trip back down memory lane then they could be just for you. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. For further information visit or
