  1. I held off on finishing this for a while to see if the Revell kit was any good. I've seen one now, and will be sticking with my Tamiya kits having compared them to the Avieology drawings. Still, it may reduce the interest in these so I'm going to begin with a batch of 30 sets and see how they go. This is a direct fit replacement tailplane and elevator set for the Tamiya 1/48 Bristol Beaufighter TF.X (Kit no. 61067). Simply replace the kit parts with these and you're done. These represent the Mod. T361 late tailplanes and elevators with enlarged balance which was achieved by extending the leading edge of the elevators forward to the tailplane spar inboard of the outer hinges. Comparison with the kit parts will reveal reprofiled tips with a tighter curve towards the leading edge loosening towards the trailing edge - the kit parts are oval shaped. Furthermore, comparison will reveal that these new "enlarged" elevators are infact smaller than the Tamiya kit parts. The reason for that is because Tamiya appears to have measured the RAF Museum's late Beaufighter and used its elevator chord, then added aerodynamic balance horns again outboard of the hinges - this is incorrect and results in elevators much too large for any Beaufighter. They are supplied as separate tailplanes and elevators, but are cast with the servo tabs in the "up" position. The servo tabs, unlike the trim tabs, are not controllable by the pilot but rather are mechanically linked to the tailplane and move in the opposite direction to the elevators. They are, in effect, an elevator for the elevator and their purpose is to aerodynamically lighten the controls to reduce physical effort required of the pilot. When the aircraft is parked in the ground and the elevators allowed to droop, the servo tabs will mirror this. I expect these will be available on our webstore in approximately 6 weeks time.
  2. It's to my shame that it's taken me so long, but we are now very pleased to announce that we have, exclusive to Sovereign Hobbies, a healthy supply of 2 stage engine nacelle resin conversion sets for your 1/48 scale Tamiya de Havilland Mosquito kits by Pangolin Models (JasonC, as you may know him). https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/1-48/products/pangolin-two-stage-mosquito-nacelles-1-48 Everything is now ready except for the little cardboard folder-over thingimabobs with the label to go on the packaging, which we'll have ready within a week. These are available to order now and dispatches will begin by the 9th June 2017. These sets are professionally cast in high quality resin, and come complete with separate cast resin 6-stack exhausts and optional photo etched brass grilles evident on the sides of some carburettor intakes. They are designed to be simple to fit and to remove the anxiety in cutting up perfectly good injection moulded kits by utilising existing panel lines on the Tamiya kit parts to locate the straight saw cuts.
  3. We are pleased to announce two new colours in our range. These colours are seldom required for very large areas on models but nevertheless they are so distinct that when required they are difficult to substitute. ACUS46 is FS 12197 International Orange, which was sometimes referred to as day-glo and which was regularly seen dotted around USAF aircraft during the cold war, indeed some aircraft had the entire rear fuselage and tails painted in it! The colour would fade somewhat in service, but the fresh appearance is very distinct. ACLW30 is RAL 2005 and officially called Luminous Orange, but is day glow orange used on Luftwaffe aircraft through the cold war including F-104G tip tanks and covering varying sized areas of all sorts of German aircraft from Rockwell Broncos to Seakings. Again, this colour would fade to orangey-yellow over time, but the fresh appearance is unique and unobtainable by mixing any combinations of other more sober coloured paints. It requires the specific pigment used in our new product. Please note that ACLW30 in particular must only be thinned with refined mineral spirit thinner such as Colourcoats Thinner. Using cellulose/lacquer thinner with this product will not work. This is due to the specific pigments used. Both ACUS46 and ACLW30 are so bright that we recommend a solid white base coat before use. The staining power of the required pigments is inherently rather weak so Colourcoats' normal excellent colour density cannot be achieved whilst maintaining the colour saturation necessary. Upon a white base though, both cover well and airbrush users in particular will be able to achieve the completed coverage in a single sitting if using our C03 Matt White product thinned with Colourcoats Thinners which will be sufficiently dried by the time the airbrush is cleaned out to move straight on to the orange.
  4. Our next show will be Scale Modelworld at Telford! Come and see us there! We are now opening orders for collection at Telford using the discount code "SMWTELFORD2017". This will close the Monday before the show to allow us time to get all your orders packed!
  5. Hi folks, Our first shipment from Artwox arrived today containing a nice selection of 1/700, 1/350 and 1/200 subjects - most of which are not available from our other stocked brands. We will be adding these to our webstore over the next day or two and, of course, we'll have them at Telford
  6. We have now finished a long-over due (and let's be honest, rather tedious!) exercise of producing colour brochures for the Colourcoats paint range. Having ruled out physical paint chips long ago (my time is worth more than anyone will want to pay) and being aware that ink just isn't very good, we have opted for downloadable brochures. These are free and you can print them at your peril! https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/pages/colour-list
  7. Very Fire Model from China is a new and up-coming company developing detail-up sets for 1/350 ships, but are actively developing latest generation injection moulded plastic kits. Their first release is the delightful and surprisingly large 1/700 kit of the battleship USS Montana. This kit is beautifully moulded and comes complete with a comprehensive sheet of photo etched brass, integrated instructions and a full colour painting guide. Sovereign Hobbies Ltd is their UK stockist! Our first stock arrived in store today and is available now: https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/very-fire-model/products/very-fire-vf700901-1-700-u-s-navy-battleship-uss-montana-bb-67 https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/very-fire-model/products/vf350004-very-fire-model-1-350-hms-ark-royal-detail-up https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/very-fire-model/products/vf350001-very-fire-model-1-350-dkm-graf-spee https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/very-fire-model/products/vf350002-very-fire-model-1-350-uss-north-carolina https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/very-fire-model/products/vf350003-very-fire-model-1-350-dkm-bismarck-for-tamiya-78013 https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/very-fire-model/products/vf350005-very-fire-model-1-350-dkm-tirpitz-for-tamiya-78015
  8. Infini Model's latest release has been fairly well publicised on social media recently, but today it is ready. 11. Just got this from Jamie Duff, proprietor of Sovereign Hobbies who bought Colourcoats when WEM folded: "We are launching this weekend at the Perth (UK) IPMS show. We will get the webstore finished when we get back and we have a means to post paints within UK mainland and above board which is great. Still need to sort out international shipping but one step at a time...." I hope everyone will give Jamie all the support that you gave us at WEM, and help him make Colourcoats a resounding success!

  13. IJN Shimakaze detail set Infini Models 1:350 One of the latest releases from Fujimi in their 1:350 ship range is the IJN experimental destroyer Shimakaze, to go with it they have also released a couple of etched sets of their own design. Whilst they are quite nice, this new set from Infini Models is an order of magnitude better. This being my first look at an Infini Models product, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, even after the packet had arrived from Sovereign Hobbies. At first glance it looks like any other etched detail set, although in a thicker plastic wallet, upon opening, this all changes and you realise that not only do you get three quite large sheets of relief etched brass, but five small zip-lock bags with the multitude of turned brass parts, another bag with a very small sheet of adhesive backed wood and a reel of lycra thread. So, pretty much everything you need to build a top glass model. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow and look very similar to the style Pontos use, which means you will be best to make annotations to the kit instructions showing where the brass parts will need to be added and any superfluous kit detail removal. When looking at the instructions you will see that it looks like a lot of the kit parts are replaced with etch. You’re pretty much using just the hull, deck, superstructure, funnels and main gun turrets, so be prepared for an exacting build. Before starting construction, the modeller should go through the instructions and remove all the detail parts from the kit, such as watertight doors, platform supports, funnel caps and the Type 13 radar array. You can then start to build up the etched sub-assemblies, beginning with the depth charge rails and racks. The depth charges are provided as a string of turned brass parts which need to be separated and fitted with the end caps before being glued into position in the etched rails and racks which have been folded to shape. The torpedo tubes and main turrets are then built up, and fitted with a multitude of fixtures and fittings, and, in the case of the turrets, replacement turned barrels. The single 23mm mountings look to be about the fiddliest of all the sub-assemblies, and there are fourteen to make. Each barrel needs to be cut from its moulding block, as these don’t appear turned, due to the superb spring detail on them. The breech section is then folded to shape and the barrel inserted. Each gun is then fitted with the ammunition cartridge, pedestal mount, shoulder bars, and finally the pedestal itself. The twin, (one mounting), and triple 23mm, (four mountings), mounts are built in a similar way, with the breech sections folded and the barrels fitted, followed by the mounting, splinter shields, sights, seats and turntable. As with the depth charges, the cable reels are provided as a string of drums which need to be separate before each is fitted with end plates, then to their respective cradles. With the kits moulded funnel caps removed, the etched parts can be added, the front funnel with four parts, the rear with two. There are also large ventilator grilles to be fitted. The bridge section is then fitted with the wind deflectors, rear decking, watertight doors, cable reels, bridge screens, scuttles and railings. The foremast is provided with replacement yardarms, yardarm supports, vertical ladders, platforms, anemometer, and wind director. The rest of the set, contains the various gun platforms, their supports, a full complement of ships railings, the fixing strips for the linoleum, Type 13 radar, and the davits for the ships boats. Talking of which the cutter is provided with adhesive wooden decking, brass thwarts, new cradles and a set of oars.r, whilst the motor boat is fitted with new railings, lifering, rudder and propeller. The highly detailed accommodation ladders can be posed in use or stored on the ships deck. The associated cranes are also provided, as are the fixed steps fitted to each side of the quaterdeck. A nice touch is a pair of torpedoes and their transport trolleys which can be glued in any appropriate position the modeller wishes. Conclusion As an introduction to Infini Models products this set is pretty darn amazing. Everything is so well etched, turned or moulded it can certainly be placed as high as more established brands, if not higher. The inclusion of almost everything a modeller will need to make a museum quality model, including the rigging is very welcome, only some chain needs to be sourced. Considering the set comes in a reasonably small packet, it’s amazing what Infini have managed to include. Very highly recommended Review sample courtesy of:
  14. Good evening fellow modellers We have had a busy week at Sovereign Hobbies, which is going to mean some positive changes in the not-too-distant future. More on that in due-course ... In the short term, we have initiated manufacture of 3 new colours: ACRN34 WW2 Azure Blue This colour is matched to the colour chips endorsed by the RAF Museum at Hendon within the book "British Aviation Colours of World War Two - The Official Camouflage, Colours and Markings of RAF Aircraft, 1939-1945" published by Arms and Armour Press ISBN 0-85368-271-2. This book is regarded as the reference for wartime British aircraft colours. ACUS33 WW2 US Navy Non-Specular Sea Blue ANA607 ACUS34 WW US Navy Glossy Sea Blue ANA623 Theses colours are matched to this reference's painted colour chips: The existing ACUS07: ... was analysed against the reference material and Federal Standard chips, and proved to be an excellent match to ANA606 Semi-gloss Sea Blue but ironically not, as they are labelled, FS25042. Consequently, ACUS07 is renamed as ANA606 and we will shortly produce a brand new FS15042 match for modellers to use on Korean war type schemes.
  15. There are many threads and questions about Spitfire propellers and which should be fitted to what mark etc. There are some great references here on Britmodeller already. This post is intended to publicise the different propellers and spinners available for Spitfires in 1/48 scale from Ultracast. All info from Ultracast's own site: Weybridge 2-blade propeller - Ultracast 48197 This propeller was installed on the first production Spitfires (K9787 to K9863) De Havilland 3-blade propeller and spinner - Ultracast 48112 This is the prop & spinner mostly commonly associated with the Mk I Spitfire, however this blade was also used on many Mk II's and Mk V's. Rotol 3-blade propeller and blunt spinner (includes blister for Coffman starter on Mk.II Spits) - Ultracast 48113 This is the prop & spinner most commonly associated with the Mk II Spitfire. This combination was also used on some Mk V's. Check your reference photos for correct prop & spinner. Rotol 3-blade metal propeller and spinner - Ultracast 48114 This prop & spinner is seen on many Mediterranean and Pacific theatre Spitfire Mk V's. Check your reference photos for correct prop & spinner. Many photos of this combination can be found on the Australian War Memorial website, including photos of Clive Caldwell standing in front of a Spitfire Mk V using these blades. Another very interesting photo can be found on Page 143 of Wings of Fame Vol. 18. This photo shows two Spitfire Mk V's undergoing service on Malta, one Spitfire has the early De Havilland blades, the other has these wider Rotols. Rotol 3-blade wooden propeller and long spinner - Ultracast 48115 This is the prop & spinner most commonly associated with the Mk V Spitfire. This set contains accurately profiled blades and a detailed spinner. Mk.IX 4-blade propeller and spinner - Ultracast 48260 Standard fare for Mk.VIII, IX and XVI Spitfires - this set contains more accurately shaped propeller blade tips, and provides missing rivet detail from the otherwise lovely new Eduard kits.
  16. We have released a new proprietary thinner to compliment the Colourcoats range Colourcoats Thinners offers a number of key benefits to enamel paint users including: · Reduced odours during use compared to white spirits or cellulose thinners · Reduced drying times compared to white spirits · Less aggressive towards styrene plastics than cellulose thinners · If desired, excess thinned paints can be returned to Colourcoats tins without premature curing in the tin https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/multi-use-colours/products/colourcoats-thinners'>https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/multi-use-colours/products/colourcoats-thinners
  17. Morning all, We're pleased to be attending the Scottish Nationals again in Perth (Scotland, not Australia!) on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th April 2016. We will be taking a wide range of Colourcoats paint, but with the benefit of experience this time we will be taking (much) less of the slower sellers. We will also bring our products from Pontos Model, Infini Model (including their new white rigging line) and White Ensign Models. Due to popular demand, and a general aim of less tedious set-up and tear down of paint stands (sorry, we're only human and it's very boring ) we're doing pre-orders for collection at the show this year, which closes at 0900hrs of Wednesday 20th April. To order for collection, please go through the webstore and use the discount code "ScotNats16" which shall negate the shipping/ postage. After that, we'll see you on either the Saturday or the Sunday! P.S. we have more Infini and WEM inbound at the moment!
  18. Various Colours Colourcoats, Sovereign Hobbies I’ve been a long time advocate for Colourcoats enamels and it was with shock and sadness that these paints were to be no more with the demise of White Ensign Models. Fortunately though, Sovereign Hobbies were able to buy the rights to the paints and, I believe with the help of John Snyder, have been able to re-release them, although with a slightly revised recipe. They still have to be some of the most accurate enamels, colour wise, around. The first thing you notice is the new style labels on the tins. These are not only of a cleaner, fresher design; they are also so much easier to read. This reviewers eyesight is not the best and the old style backgrounds made it very difficult to read what the colours were. The paints themselves appear to be of a finer pigment than even the originals, but they mix very well and seem to be thicker, making brush painting a lot easier too. Having used these new colours on a number of projects they do need a fair bit of thinning to use in an airbrush, but the results have been generally very good, with good coverage using a 0.4 needle, although when using a 0.2 needle I found it difficult to get the right balance between paint and thinners, meaning that the airbrush sometimes spluttered the paint out and it drying on the airbrush tip, so still need to do some experimentation. That said I did get some great results on a large repainting job that I carried out for my Model Club. The paints received for this review cover air, land and maritime subjects and include the following:- ACGW02 – Khaki, (PC-10) (RFC/USAAC) ACGW10 – Doped Linen ARB02 – Deep Bronze Green ARB06 – Modern British Army Green US26 – US MTB Green GW02 - #2 Grey WW1 RN Grey Conclusion These are great paints, with spot on colour, fine pigments and can be used both in an airbrush and paint brush. It’s great to see these paints re-born, and that they are still sourced in the UK, thanks to Sovereign Hobbies. Very highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of:
  19. It's a very soggy day in Aberdeenshire today and therefore one purpose made for model making indoors! It has taken me far too long to get around to having a more formalised presence here on Britmodeller and hope to share some of what we're doing both in the UK and internationally. 13 months ago I read on Facebook that White Ensign Models were to cease trading. This came as a shock and huge disappointment. I've been making models since I was a child with both my father and grandfather but had only fairly recently got back in to it properly after a break where starting careers and family got in the way. I'm quite clear on what happened after that Facebook announcement but how it all happened is a bit of a mystery and somehow I ended up owning my favourite paint brand. We started the new company immediately but it took us some time set up properly. I dislike chaos and wanted to do things properly. Colourcoats was relaunched at the Scottish Nationals model show in Perth in April 2015, the first commercial order was dispatch to the USA shortly after and our shiny new webstore opened for UK Mainland customers in June. I mostly model aeroplanes and ships myself, and soon after getting Colourcoats up and running again, I realised I could no longer obtain most of my favourite naval modelling products in particular, so we have thus far reinvested everything we've taken into improving that situation in the UK, and now offer White Ensign Models again (now imported from California), Pontos Models and new-start Infini Model both from South Korea. More is on the way this quarter. We're just rolling out colour boxsets at the moment which are proving popular already, happily. The Colourcoats paint range currently comprises: Colourcoats Sea. Modern Naval The Great War United States Navy Imperial Japanese Navy Royal Navy Kriegsmarine (German navy) Regia Marina (Italian navy) Colourcoats Land. Australian Army Imperial Japanese Army Army for Defence for Israel United States Army Red Army (Soviet) British Army Wehrmacht (German army) Regia Esercito (Italian army) Colourcoats Air. The Great War Armee de l'Air (French air force) US Army Air Corps / US Air Force / US Navy Imperial Japanese Army and Navy Royal Air Force / Fleet Air Arm Luftwaffe (German air force) Royal Australian Air Force Regia Aeronautica (Italian air force) Royal Netherlands Air Force
  20. Hi Folks, although normally adversed to posting WIPs due to my general lack of haste or inability to finish anything in any sort of reasonable timescale, I've decided to post one for my next build. I've been dabbling with 1:48 scale on the odd occasion this year, mainly to get the pesky things out of my stash to make more room for Gentleman's scale kits, but also so that I could try out some new techniques and consumables on larger bits of plastic. The kit I'm going to make is the Airfix 1:48 Bf109E which has (shamefully) been sitting in my stash since this time last year (many thanks to Col for the Birthday present, I promise to make this year's one soon!). I'm going to break from my normal painting habits and will be trying Sovereign Hobbies' Colourcoat range of enamels and will be interested to see how they perform compared to my trusty Gunze acrylics. So on with the photos, firstly the subject The obligatory boxtop photo The main colours And they're under Starter's Orders. Some nasty injection marks in obvious places around the cockpit sidewalls that need dealing with... ...a quick scrape with the scalpel.... ... and a few passes with a fibreglass pencil and they are gone. Some clean up to do and assemble the cockpit then it'll be time to break out the RLM02. Duncan B
