Hi, My P-38 build in that STGB is coming along nicely. I'm keen to build something in this GB as well. It's also a Tamiya kit. I'm going to build it as an aircraft of the Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River. It's a test aircraft with very colourful paintjob, so it fits nicely in this GB. Cheers, Stefan.- 25 replies

Hi all! Here is my last build, a Douglas F-6A Skyray in 1/48 scale from Tamiya in the colors of the US Naval Test Pilot School. The model is painted with mainly Mr Paint colors. Few scratch details in the cockpit with a Reskit seat. Decals are from a Furball decal sheet. The ladder is a 3D LP Model one initially for the Skyhawk but shortened of one step. Need something to mess around with whilst waiting for a GB to start, pulled this classic off the shelf. Not sure what to add. It's Tamiya so that should cover the moulding questions. Two grey and one clear sprue is all there is. However got this somewhere, a really old Microscale decal sheet (for the Airfix kit...). Still looks good. Not sure which version I want, VF-74 with the red rudder bar or VF-213 with the Blue & White checkered tail. Will see what strikes me when I get to decals.

Douglas F4D-1 Skyray, VMF(AW)-115 Kit: Tamiya Douglas F4D-1 Skyray (#60741) Scale: 1/72 Paints: Vallejo Model Air, Vallejo Metal Colour Weathering: Flory Models Wash, oil paints, Vallejo weathering products, Ammo Mig weathering products First carrier-launched aircraft to hold the world's absolute speed record - and first US Navy/USMC to exceed mach 1 in level flight. Not a mean feat by such a little known jet. But what a beautiful lines and very nice kit by Tamiya. Even the decals worked fine, after enough applications of Tamiya Decal adhesive and X-20A. Really enjoyed this smooth build, can't wait to do the same kit in 1/48 soon!

Project Pilot was an early attempt by the US Navy to build an anti-satellite system. For an interesting overview of the project, see the Wikipedia entry. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOTS-EV-1_Pilot The carrier aircraft was a specially modified F4D Skyray. I've always thought that the Skyray was the very definition of an interceptor. It had an incredible rate of climb and so was ideal for the role. That rate of climb was why it was selected as the carrier for Project Pilot. This build will use the excellent Tamiya 1/72 kit. The missile and decals are from Starfighter Decals. As you can see, this will provide a rare opportunity to build a Sea Blue F4D.

My first build of 2021 and first Tamiya model. For my first tamiya I have to say some very nice detail and fits. Found the decals a little weak especially the intake hazard decals too many folds. And not a fan of the colours only available as a spray making it very hard to convert to a tin or to humbrol etc. If anybody has a good cross reference site for tamiya AS paints let me know please.

I'm slowly moving back through the years. This is a kit I first built in the summer of 1982 (memories of the World Cup in Spain!), doubtless with the proceeds of my first summer job. The Airfix DHC Beaver was another kit I clearly remember from that time. Both kits have been favourites of mine ever since, but I've not yet managed to get another kit of the Beaver. I picked up the Skyray again second-hand in 2015, and have been waiting ever since for a good time to build it. This kit must have been bought c. 1976/1977, as it has "new" on the box cover: The Skyray was first issued in 1976 1977. The kit I built in 1982 had modified artwork, and I suspect was in a slightly larger box. It's not included on Scalemates, but it did exist! Here's my own scan of that - spot all the differences: The box contents appear identical, save that the original issue kit includes a stand. I will be building this kit "wheels up", because (a) the kit supports this option, and (b) it supports - and includes - a stand. I have two of the excellent Tamiya kit, but that can only be built "wheels down" out of the box. I'll probably go with the USMC subject on the cover. And I'll be using the pilot. No painting instructions are included for the pilot figure, but that's easy to figure out. I should get started this evening. The long-term weather forecast for this week is very good, so I may not be going at full tilt on this. On the other hand, it's a very well engineered kit, so assembly should be relatively straightforward.

This is the Tamiya Skyray, pretty much from the box with just a few tweaks and markings from Starfighter Decals “Forgotten Fords” set to depict an airframe from VMF(AW)-542 Gray Ghosts, in what the Warpaint book (No 117) describes as probably a one-off scheme for that unit. The AIM-9Bs are robbed from a Hobbyboss F-5E, because they are nicer than the ones in the Tamiya kit. This really is a great kit to build (no filler here!) and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Hi! Little fast project on the side. Completly no problem build - 100% OOB. Model was painted with AK RC, Tamiya and Gunze paints, small details with Vallejo and Model Master. Weathering I made with oil paints for artists.

Hi, Where there any regulations concerning walkways on Skyray's? It seems that sometimes where they painted in light seagull and later on in darker shades of grey. And sometimes lined in black, ewen red and on some aircraft not lined at all. Usually those walkways are made as decals as well. But it look's strange sometimes depending on decal quality. Hello! Here's another one of my model. Assembly was simple and without any problems. There were some improvements. 1 Added to the resin cockpit from CMK 2 On the glazing scratched antenna. 3 Added resin missiles. 4 Modified landing gear I used MR color paints. Weathering- oil dots pigments and washes.

Hi, here's the latest completion, the excellent Tamiya "Ford". Pretty voiceless kit, any issues were all of my own making (I lost the nose wheel door for instance!) Mr Hobby H325 for the grey and Tamiya XF-2 for the white Aeromaster decals Mig Ammo panel line wash Vallejo semi matt varnish Feel free to rip it apart - I can take it honest! Oh, sorry for the big pics, I know nothing about how to post etc!

Hi, here's my current wip (for a GB on Flory Models). Somehow I have managed to delete my in progress pics for the hosting site, sorry! Anyway it's the excellent Tamiya kit with Aeromaster decals. For some reason the image appears rather large on my preview, if it's too large can somebody help resize please?

Gentlemen, Having a really soft spot for the naval aviaition of the 1950s and 60s, adding a "Ford" to my collection was a mere formality. Since I was a kid, recularly spending some of my pocket money for Buck Danny comics, the shape of the F4D has been quite familiar to me - back then the delta-winged F4D looked so cool. TAMIYA's quarterscale F4D had been around for some years, when I eventually had the opportunity to tackle one of these kits. Douglas F4D-1, VF-213 "Blacklions", USS Lexington 1957 In order to further improve an already great kit, I added a CMK cockpit set and Eduard PEs. The kit's decals were replaced by an AeroMaster sheet - AeroMaster #48-542, "F4D-1 Skyrays Part 2" The paintjob was accomplished using Gunze Mr.HOBBY colour acrylics, applying only restrained post-shadings and subtle weathering effects. The AIM-9B Sidewinders were taken from a Hasegawa weapons set. Cheers, Erik

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to present my newest model. It's the good old tamiya Skyray. It was generally fun to build, fitting and detailing is very good, but the decals are not. They are rather thick, and didn't react with the softeners I work with (micro sol). The building was OOB, I haven't even added the seat belts. Colours are Modelmaster enamel, Light Gull Grey and white, after a preshade. I kept weathering to a absolute minimum (actually just some washing), as the aircrafts looked always very clean. My daughter wanted the aircraft to fly, so she drew a nice cloudy landscape. Isn't she sweet? Thanks for watching! Alex
