Having some AZ kits in the stash, I decided to try to build another stright (okay, "kind of stright") of the box. As I hate spending cash on aftermarket unless really necessary (seatbelts), I expect some cutting, some stretched sprue toying, (ab)using some hypodermic needles, Just to give you an idea, I will try to achieve something like this: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234929894-spit-mk22-pk312/

Following on for my conversion of the 72nd scale Airfix Spitfire Vb to a Seafire III I bought another Vb & a Vc to do the Seafire Ib & IIc. The first Vc kit died in a major glue spill so I sourced another to replace it and will restart that one soon as it arrives. In the meantime here's the chosen subjects and progress so far. They will form numbers 3 and 4 from a pile that is about to be joined by a Special Hobby 72nd scale XV. Who, me, obsessed? Nah. After thinning the fuselage halves the internal structure gets represented by some plastic strip. Next task is to form the bulkhead frames. One issue with the Vc boxing is the new wing parts are not such a nice shape as the older Vb parts and very thick. Once the new kit arrives I'll look at them again and decide if using the old wings modfified to take the new cannon bulge parts or thinning the new wings is the better route.

At what point did the interiors of Seafires go over from interior green to matt black please? I'm particular interested in knowing the interior colour of FR.46 LA545 110/CH of 1832 Sq, Culham. If it helps at all, this seems to be the last Seafire 46 completed in the wartime Temperate Sea Scheme. Thanks in advance.

I've finally got round to taking some pics of built models. They are the Airfix Club kit 2012 - Bf109E-3 in RAF markings, the Airfix Seafire XVII and the Eduard P-39D Airacobra. The Bf109 is totally OOB, The Seafire has Eduard seatbelts added and the P-39 is OOB but it's a Profipack so it has the etch parts fitted. I've not got photobucket or anything like that, nor am I going to. Instead I'm using the MJW Models Facebook page. I'll be taking further pics of other models as and when I can and also pics of museum and air show visits. http://www.facebook.com/#!/media/set/?set=a.494742367251935.1073741826.449805648412274&type=1 The P-39 is my first attempt at faded paintwork. It was airbrushed Black first and then the panels were picked out in a very Dark Grey. The other two were built before I did that and since then I've been doing more models with faded paintwork. thanks Mike Don't forget to like the page to get more updates!

Regardless of accuracy issues, perceived or real, I have just completed two of Airfix's new 1/48 Spitfire family, the XII and XVII. Both were built OOB, with just the addition of decal seat belts. Both were uncompicated builds, and I enjoyed these enormously. Hope you like!

I purchased the Freightdog conversion set for the Revell 1/32 Spitfire when it was first released but took some time to pluck up the courage to start it. The Revell base kit can be a bit challenging anyway as the parts breakdown for the wings is quite a strange design. Coupled with the 1970's moulding technology (this was originally produced by Matchbox) there is, shall we say, "room for improvement". Mods include, Freightdog resin conversion, Greymatters belly tank, Quickboost seat and Barracuda canopy handle from a set I bought for the Tamiya Spitfire XVI. Added detail to the wheel wells, replaced gear legs with brass tube, scratchbuilt details in the cockpit and built plasticard 'cameras' to prevent see through look in through the camera ports. WIP thread is here - http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234931641&hl= I really think the Matchbox Spitfire makes a lovely looking model but I love the 'ultimate' Seafire and am very pleased to have one in 32nd scale. Overall a very enjoyable build and I'm very pleased with the result. There were a couple of errors on this build. I forgot to re-scribe the larger flap fitted to the Seafire and the spinner should have been EDSG on this aircraft, things I have to live with now. Need to check refs and instructions more carefully in the future, but I have learned from this. Regards, Steve.

This all started with a question about how to make a prop look like it's spinning. I mentioned that the technique I use is to make a brass bush and close fitting rod instead of the usual plastic shaft/poly cap kit arrangement and spin it with an aibrush to photograph. So here is my attempt at replicating a photo I took in Duxford in 2010 in model form. The only photoshoppery is to remove the aircraft from the original photo so I can use it as a backdrop, and about 100 pixels worth of editing on the far wingtip to remove the steel rod that mounts the model into the photo. Here's the original and heres my attempt at it:- My main cock-up is that the kit radiator cowls are moulded open and I only now spotted this. Also my panel line are far too heavy, otherwise quite pleased with it. It was an interesting exercise using old fashioned photography rather than photoshop. In true movie tradition, I've only 'half built the model' as well. I had to scratch most of the decals so I only bothered with the ones you can see. Thanks for looking Nick

Having waxed lyrical about how to spin a prop, I thought I'd put my money where my mouth is. So here is original Seafire photo from Duxford in 2010:- A small photoshop smart-fill later, no seafire. Cue ropey, lashed up, OOB airfix Seafire, this is with zero photoshop-age, hence shadows. I printed the background, built the model with a steel rod in the wingtip (which you can see) made a hole in the photo for the rod, clamped up using live view on the camera to get the angle about right and spun the prop very slowly with my airbrush and a shutter speed of about or second or so. The only mod was a brass shaft for the prop and and a brass tube epoxied into the fuse to accept it. Good fun actually. by cannibilising the kit decals I was able to get enough for the photo, eg pinching both '3's, cutting an 8 into a six, making the 'VL' from scratch, etc. Pilots crap and I haven't properly detailed anything yet, but quite pleased with the result. Also added about 33% to my annual build total in one go! Nick

Finished today the nice Airfix Seafire F.XVII, completely OOB. I decided to build this to try the Agama Alcohol based paints - specifically the EDSG, DSG and Interiour Grey-Green. These paints behave nicely when thinned with IPA or Mr Levelling thinner, close to Gunze to spray, and has the advantage that Agama do colours that gunze dont :-). Unfortunately at the moment you can only buy them direct from Agama but hopefully that will change. The paints: And the finished Peter
