  1. I am building a Phantom FGR2 for the GB and intend doing an aircraft from 41 Sqn. I would like to fit the EMI recon pod, but does anyone have an idea of what else it would normally carry. The few non publicity photos seem to show Sparrows and drop tanks and not much else if carrying the pod, which I assume makes sense for recce sorties. Was the intention to carry other ordnance to attack targets of opportunity? I know 41 was tasked for both reconnaissance and attack, but at the same time?
  2. Hi all, Back again this time with the Airfix fgr.2. The build went ok tho there was an awful lot of mold seam lines that had to be taken care of and that front portion of the canopy was a bit of a bad fit. I tried to sand it down but it was getting a bit thin and feared it was going to break on me, plus my filling skills need a bit of work. The decal are from Xtradecal. The 2 that sit on the fin tip rwr antenna are way to big and has to be trimmed down and is now 9 squares across and not 10. Chose to do it in the 19Sqdrn scheme for XV422 which accidentally shot down an RAF Jaguar although I believe that it was in the green/grey colours. Painted with Tamiya on top and nose, Xtracrylic bottom and AK Xtreme metal for engine end. I also tried salt weathering for the first time but didnt go 2 mad on it hopefully. Well here she is, hope she meets the approval of the experts. If not then I will take it and destroy it. 😁. As always, thanks for having a look. Dave.
  3. After 4 months of repairing my collection following my move I finally opened a new box. I read an article some time ago that featured the Phantom FGR2 in grey/green camouflage using Humbrol paints. I cannot find the article so I would greatly appreciate if someone would provide me with guidance on the subject. Lou
  4. I loved building this as part of my model clubs group build: T101 (101 years of Tangmere Airfield). XV408 is currently resident at Tangmere Military Aircraft Museum, which is home to my club: Tangmere Sector Modellers IPMS. It is being lovingly restored to its most famous 'blue' scheme that 92Sqn had done in homage to the blue Hunters that the Squadron used for their display team. This is the Hasegawa 'blue special' kit with Aires resin cockpit, Radar, electronics bay, allycat seamless intakes, scratch built parachute compartment (and other bits). Painted with Vallejo Model Air insignia blue. 101 will be at Scale Model World, so please come and see us.
  5. Hot on the tail of the Canberra is another classic 80s RAF type, the mighty Phantom! Harking back to halcyon days peering over the fence at Wattisham in summers gone by, I'll (probably) be making this as a standard, grey 56 sqn jet (no red tail or shark mouth) from around 1987. It was great of Revell to release this as I'd been after a 1/48 RAF Phantom for ages but ebay prices for Hasegawa/Fujimi were frankly ridiculous. This one was very reasonable at around £23 (I pre-ordered!) so can't complain. Except for the fact that very disappointingly, for some reason Revell's decal sheet doesn't include any instrument decals! A good opportunity to tidy up the workbench before starting too. Here's the obligatory box shot (nice artwork), sprues, decals, etc. And this is the Phantom I'm currently considering creating her as, possibly without the underwing fuel tanks, not decided yet. Does anyone on here know much about 56's Phantoms, what the standard fit was, etc? Photo obviously isn't mine, it's by Lieuwe Hoestra for Airfighters.com, and what a roaringly splendid one it is! Mods if it breaks copyright please delete it. Interestingly, the box says 'level 5' and the plans 'level 4'! Maybe 4.5 then, although I'm sure I'll manage!
  6. Last one for 2018. The depended all Hasegawa Phantom FGR2 in 74Sqn scheme. Built for the backseat of this particular aircraft. Extras included eduard photo etch and armament. Paint is Vallejo Air. Happy New Year and look forward to seeing more outstanding builds in '19.
  7. This is the quarter scale Phantom FGR 2 92Sqn special blue scheme by Hasegawa. Difficult and expensive to come by, but still the only one on the market. As always an excellent kit with few hangups. Extra detail was provided by eduard PE and resin. The base is home made. Built for one if the aircrew of this aircraft with only three training missiles. This aircraft is being restored at my local museum: Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.
