  1. Here's my final planned entry for the Group Build (although it might actually be the first that I make). It was an impulse buy from eBay a few days ago. It seemed a natural shoo-in for the GB. This is a paper model of The Skylon, which was the architectural centre-piece of the 1951 Festival of Britain. The edifice was approximately 90m tall and was designed to look (from a distance), as if it was floating on air with no means of support. It was made from aluminium louvres and illuminated at night from within (but no, my model won't be ). This video will tell you more - but if you don't fancy the full 20 minutes, the title sequence alone is worth a look. There's another good bit from 13:30 to 14:30 - one of the BBC guys doesn't look too happy with his sight-seeing tour in a bucket! The paper model was originally produced by Micro Models in the 1950s, but mine is a present-day reproduction. By my reckoning, it's 1/720 scale. To quote the instructions: "The only additional materials required are a tube of Balsa Cement and some fine cotton. If your eyesight is good enough, threads drawn from an old nylon stocking are better than cotton". Should be fun! Cheers

  3. Good evening everyone, I have two rather troublesome questions which have been plaguing me for a few weeks now, the first is regarding the Airfix Vulcan. I have finally plucked up the courage (and money!) to have a crack at an Airfix vulcan with the White Ensign Models (WEM) photo-etch kits, consisting of a bomb-bay, cockpit and airbrakes/exterior details. The question is, how should I present it so the cockpit detail can be viewed-should I have only the canopy as a removable item? Should I have a removable panel on the side? Should I just cut a cut-away hole in the side and leave it open? (Lighting is a possibility for all options). The second issue is that as some of you may know, I'm working on a 1:48 Vulcan made from card (card, not corrugated cardboard) which I intend to include almost every single piece of ribbing and interior details (fuel tanks, major linkages through the wings, fully detailled cockpit, etc). I am sure you can understand that I would rather open the details up so they can be viewed and like the previous issue, the question is how? The choices I've got consist of having half of the Vulcan (the left side for example) being "stripped" of the skin-exposing the detailling. The other choice is to have some panels removable or have them on hinges (could be useful for the engine servicing bay where the fairings hinge open, or the ECM fairing at the back which also hinges open). The third option would be to cover the entire aircraft in a skin but have these pieces of skin removable for viewing. If you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your feedback! *While I don't think it is particularly ethical to advertise an external site on the forums I do feel that for the time being the progress photos are much easier to post on the blog. Don't feel obliged to click on it though! (see signature) Thanks, Sam
  4. Good evening, I'd like to present you my latest paper Model, the "Zenit". It's a rather small ship in 1/250, the whole kit is printed on two A4-sheets. More infos about the ship can be found on the website of the manufacturer, HMV. Building was straightforward, just the two hull sides are a bit too short, and had to be lenghten by ca. 1.5mm. Otherwise it was fun to build, there is even a interior (bridge, desks, PC...). Railing is done with cotton thread, stiffened with highly diluted PVA glue. No Lasercut or etched part used for this kit. Thanks fpr watching! Alex
  5. Welcome all to my first build thread! This is my efforts to try and document my build of the HMV Nordic in 1/250. There are a lot of excellent shots of the sheets and completed model here: http://h-m-v.de/nordic.0.html?&L=1 I've acquired the laser-cut parts set too meaning there are about 1700 parts to cut out and prep for the build! I'm going to need lots of scalpel blades. I appreciate it is not the usual the usual plastic medium, this project has come around due to me needing something simple to transport as I'm working away from home for the next few months and can't carry many tools, paints etc around. Phone pictures I'm afraid but I'm trying my best to keep them up to scratch! First build stage complete. The first few stages are to produce the below waterline section of the boat. My plan is to place it in a harbour setting on some plastruct water sheet and as such I'm using this part as a learning exercise for techniques and glues. This is the end of the second stage of construction. Cross ribs to come next. I shall endeavor to post at least a photo for each stage. Once the detail starts there should be a little more interest! Do let me know if a paper build is of interest! Once we settle back home I'll try my best to get more of my styrene builds up in threads as well All thoughts and tips greatly appreciated, criticisms even more so! Pete
