  1. Hi, here comes my latest model that I finished yesterday. It's my first P-40 and I went for the obvious option: a shark mouth of 112 Sqn. The kit is the 1/72 from Legato/AZ and it is finished basically out of the box. The break lines on the landing gear are the only addition. The paints are Tamiya and I have used oil paints for panel wash, oil/fuel spills and general weathering. Special attention was paid to the decals and tires which shouldn't look too pristine on a desert a/c. It is a nice kit despite being short-run and needing some filler. I like the fine panel lines while many smaller parts are a bit softly moulded and ill-defined. The decals supplied with the kit were used and they worked without problems. These Kittyhawks were delivered in in the Temperate Land Scheme (US paints used, of course) and the Dark Green was later overpainted with Middle Stone. Therefore DG is still visible around the serial. The photo of the original also shows that the edge of the fuselage roundel was carelessly sprayed over with Middle Stone. There seems to be some discussion on the correct colour for the underside whether it is Azure Blue or perhaps Light Mediterranean Blue. On the original photo it sure looks very dark but this might be due to the stark shadow. I went for a mix that looks right to me. The original photo can be found here: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205208930 The a/c carried the small inscription "London Pride" barely visible over the "Y" on the port side. In these days one could write the letters G, A and Y as well as the word "pride" on an aircraft and nobody would consider it odd. The base is a bit small for the Kittyhawk but it is just recycled. Originally it served quite a different vehicle: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234964208-sdkfz-263-172/ Thanks for looking. All comments welcome. Ole
  2. While perusing another site I found a link to this Portuguese site that has several interesting collections of photos, including this one! Spam site link removed
  3. 1/48 scale, OD/Neutral Grey. Mostly OOB. Comments welcome.
  4. Bazooka Launchers for P-40 1:32 Brassin Arriving in the cardboard box that are used for the more fragile sets in the Brassin range, this set consists of two complete launchers, four end plates, and four fixing arms. There is also a smallish etched sheet, containing the straps that go round each three tube launcher and a small resin fixture for he straps. Construction is relatively simple, just cut the moulding blocks off the launchers and launcher end sections, for which the modeller has the option of fitting one pair for armed or the other pair for empty launchers. Each of the upright fixtures is then glued to the top attachment points of the launchers. The tubes are then fitted with six straps which go round all three tubes, and a strengthening strap that is fitted between the aft attachment point to one of the binding straps. Conclusion I didn’t even realise the P-40 ever carried these bazooka style launchers, and I suggest that some research is carried out to ensure the particular aircraft you wish to build, did in fact carry them. As usual the mouldings are superb and they will certainly give the P-40 a different look in your collection. Review sample courtesy of
  5. Curtiss P-40 wheel set Eduard 1:32 The Hasegawa P-40 kit has been around for quite a while, even in its last incarnation from 2013. Recently Eduard have released a number of etched sets for it, now it’s their Brassin range to have a go. This lovely looking resin set comes encased in their usual clear styrene bubble packaging, and contains the two main wheels, which come with separate inner hubs, and a single piece tailwheel. The resin moulding is well up to the standard we have come to expect from Brassin and includes the makers name and size information on the main tyre side walls, along with the very nicely moulded diamond tread pattern. All the tyres have a slight bulge to give the impression there is weight on them, but not excessively. All the wheels are only attached to the moulding plugs via a small contact point on the bulged area and a couple of webs, so shouldn’t be too hard to remove and clean up. The hubs are a little more awkward, but with care and a sharp blade or saw you should be ok. The hubs will need to have the rear sanded down to thickness so that they fit into the wheel recess correctly. The set also includes a small etched brass sheet. This contains the outer hub covers, one for each main wheel. To complete the set, and make it a lot easier to spray the completed wheels a set of mask, made of kabuki style tape has also been included. Conclusion These resin wheels, with their etched detail parts make a great addition to the completed model. There is a little bit of work to get them off the moulding blocks, but there’s nothing that a moderately competent modeller can’t handle. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  6. Hi, I have almost finished my 1/72 Legato/AZ P-40 Kittyhawk. When I demasked the canopy I realized that the Interior Green visible behind the latertal rear part (or aft windows) of the canopy just does not look right. I think I read somewhere that this part should be camouflaged like the rest of the aircraft. With some luck I actually succeeded in removing the clear parts without breaking anything but now I am wondering how to repaint this recessed area behind the cockpit (how do you call this trade mark-sign of the P-40 anyway?). The aircraft I am building is (not a very original choice!) a 112 Sqn Kittyhawk I finished in Middle Stone and Dark Earth. The aircraft was obviously delivered in the TLS because you can still see the serial on a Dark Green (or at least dark) patch that was spared out when the DG was overpainted with Middle Stone. Now what is the colour behind these lateral aft windows? Still Dark Green (and Dark Earth) or did somebody bother to remove the aft windows to repaint this part in Middle Stone? All pictures I have looked at are unclear in this aspect. Sometimes this area looks darker than the rest of the fuselage sides and sometimes not. What is your opinion (or proven knowledge) on this matter? Thanks in advance, Ole
  7. Curtiss P-40 Warhawk / Tomahawk / Kittyhawk. Even though shown in the markings for The Flying Tigers at Pensecola this P-40B was an RAF Machine which was then supplied to the Russians. Pics thanks to Bootneck Mike.
  8. RetroWings (https://retrokitonline.net) is to release a 1/72nd Curtiss P40E/VK-105 Kittyhawk VVS - ref.PRS7201 AZ model kit with extra resin parts to create a Russian P40 with Klimov Engine. 9. Hello! This build started out in 2014 after a visit to Duxford Flying Legends. I saw there a beautiful NMF P-40 and it really captured my imagination, so much so that I wanted to build my own personal P-40 B in a NMF. I'm not one for "What if" builds usually, I leave that sort of thing up to those better than me. So last year this build was started with the 1/32 Trumpeter P-40B, a CMK resin cockpit and some AM Decals. As this was to be my own flight, I named her after my lovely wife Shelley-Anne, who has been putting up with me for over 21 years now, and more recently helping me through a rough time with an injury I am still being treated for. This build was on hold for a very long time due to my not having the full use of my right hand, I am now able to use it again and over time I have been finishing off all the projects left on the bench. I have had great fun with this build, and due to my ham fisted modelling technique I have made some mistakes along the way. I don't mind, it is nice to finish something and to be happy with it. The kit itself is OK, but the cockpit provided sits far too low inside the airframe and is not a good fit. The CMK cockpit is far and away a huge improvement and is easy to work with. I painted the model with various metallic shades of Alclad II and weathering was done with my own wash and artists oils. The figure, the best I could find to resemble me was the 1/32 "Flying Tiger" Pilot from Legend Productions. I have to be honest, he doesn't look a lot like me, but it was the best I could do! So I am using a generous scoop of "Artistic Licence" on this one! Well, enough blabbering from me! Have a look at the pictures and imagine a sunny day at Duxford's airfield.
  10. Hi all, here is another of my older builds, Airfix's Curtis Hawk from the "Under the Red Banner" Club set. The model represents a lend lease P-40 originally intended for RAF use, flown by Hero of the Soviet Union recipient who's name escapes me. The Airfix kit is a well detailed easy build OOB. I applied winter whitewash camo from a rattle can over brush painted basic camo colours. Internet sources show different degrees of white coverage so i used "artistic license" with my interpretation. All comments welcome.
  11. Number Two: "Du muĂźt AmboĂź oder Hammer sein." Number Six: "You must be Anvil or Hammer". Number Two: I see you know your Goethe. Number Six: And you see me as the anvil? Number Two: Precisely. I am going to hammer you. -- The Prisoner, "Hammer into Anvil" Then Achilles, in a fury, said to his horse: "Xanthus, why do you prophesy my death? There is no need. I know well enough I'm fated to die here, far from my loving parents. No matter. I will not stop till I have driven the Trojans to the limit of what they can endure in war." -- Homer, The Iliad, Book XIX Well, this is probably a terrible idea, but I'm going to try it anyway. At the start of this year, I had exactly two P-40 kits, the Sword Kittyhawk III double boxing. Because of this Group Build, I found seven more in my possession after I blacked out for a spell, so now I have to build them or perish, not least of all because my wife is starting to wonder why my stash seems to keep growing if I'm not buying anything. My intent is to build all eight aircraft as Mediterranean-based P-40s, which will require some scrounging, as the double kits only have enough regular roundels for one aircraft each. I'm going to use the spare Legato decals (supplemented by some from Cookenbacher) to build the Hasegawa kit as either J F "Eddie" Edward's machine or Clive Caldwell's sharkmouth. I'm polishing off three 109s elsewhere, but hope to get to work this weekend.
  12. These were done for the P-40 STGB, which was very enjoyable (like all Group Builds!) I decided to do an Aleutian theme, since I grew up in Alaska and that campaign has always interested me. All of them are 1/72, and the build thread is here. First up is an Academy 11th FS P-40E Aleutian Tiger. I tried a few modifications in an attempt to correct some of the Academy kit's peculiarities: bulbous spinner, upright canopy and straight spine. The spinner was replaced with the Quickboost resin set, and the canopy was replaced with an AZ one, and the spine was reshaped a little in order to accept the canopy. Next is an AZ/Legato Kittyhawk IA of No 111 Sqn RCAF. This is a Sword P-40K 'deputized' by 111 Sqn and used by Ken Boomer to score the RCAF's only aerial victory to take place over North America. Last up, a Swork P-40K of the USAAF 344th FS based on Shemya Island in 1945.
  13. Hello guys, so after few months things around me did settle down, i did settle down as well after moving to new house and i started to work on new projects I have to get used to new work bench (small house means small work bench.. ), but i ll handle it! I was thinking what kit to build, as i have few P-40s in stash (some might make it for this GB yet - Trumpeter B, Academy E, Sword short tail K, Hasegawa N). In the end i decided to get one more P-40, this time Academy P-40M/N. I m going to use some aftermarket stuff - first, PE sets i have at home (P-40E Marabu design, amazing set made for AZ model P-40E, but it ll work here too and P-40E flaps for AZ model as well), Quickboost exhausts and decal set. From the decals i would like to go for "Wairarapa Wildcat", though here i have first question - does anyone know, what colours were the roundels on the Wairarapa Wildcat? On the decals there are blue-white-red roundels, but i saw also blue-white-blue and such.. Sad part of the decals is, there is only one wildcat decal and it seems there should be one from each side of nose.. Anyway, i did some start on cockpit yesterday. The sidewalls are done using combination of Marabu PE parts, evergreens and wires. The floor is all new, as the original would be too thick and i would not be able to fit there the wheel wells. Seat and armour desk behind seat are from the Marabu PE set, headrest is scratched from evergreens. I ll continue tomorrow in this build
  14. I'm pulling a bit of an 'Enzo' for this GB and hope to complete four builds, all 1/72: 1. Academy P-40E as a USAAF 11 FS 'Aleutian Tiger'. I know this scheme has been done to death, but it wouldn't be a proper Aleutian collection without it. I bought the Quickboost spinner and propeller set for this kit, and I may try and attach a different canopy if my skills allow. 2. AZ/Legato Kittyhawk IA of RCAF 111 Sqn that served in Alaska, and it points out the fact that the British Commonwealth was active in the defense of US territory and North America itself. 3. Sword P-40K of RCAF 111 Sqn as flown by Sqn Ldr Ken Boomer when he achieved the RCAF's only aerial victory to take place over North America. Of note is that his aircraft was indeed a P-40K and not a Kittyhawk III, as for a period weather conditions were too dangerous to bring in more aircraft and several USAAF P-40K's were 'deputized' by 111 Sqn with RCAF roundels replacing the USAAF stars, but otherwise retaining USAAF markings and serial numbers. 4. Sword P-40K of the USAAF 344th FS based on Shemya Island, in a silver scheme - just because I think it would be fun to make a silver Aleutian P-40. The plan is to start the P-40E and Kittyhawk IA together and then follow on with the P-40K's if things are going smooth enough. I grew up in Alaska, but have never visited any of the Aleutian Islands (the state is gigantic). Even though I now live in 'the lower 48', the Aleutian conflict still retains my interest to this day. It is often referred to as the 'Forgotten War' in Alaska. It is so forgotten that I think that the rest of the country feels that the phrase should refer to the Korean War. Above are a few references for the builds. Thanks Mish, Mungo, Dazdot and Wyvern for organizing this group build - can't wait to get started.
  15. Well here we go discovered my P.E. is for an M and Legends resin look far too difficult. I know nothing about the P-40 to risk it
  16. Curtiss P-40B American Volunteer Group 'Flying Tigers' 3rd Pursuit Squadron 'Hells Angels' White 68 P1069 flow by Flt Ldr Charles Older, Burma 1942 Kit: Airfix 1:72 Pain:t Valajo, Weathering: Tamiya, Decals: Mix of kit and Kits World Build: HERE
  17. Kit manufacturer: Hobbyboss Scale: 1/48 Type: P40m Warhawk Extras used: Quickboost wheels, decals Paints used: Tamiya and Vallejo Recently finished this one just after xmas. Very basic kit, gear doors are even moulded to the wing! Certainly one to do to get your mojo back! disapointed you cant have the canopy open (unless you cut it) This resulted in some of the wash going behind the rear side glass behind the cockpit, which was challenging to remove to say the least! Happy with how it come out. Will certainly be building a more detailed version, anyone know what is the best one in 48th?
  18. Hey, i was thinking with what kit could i join this group build and decided to use old (but still not so bad) P-40K kit from Kovozavody Semily (later Vista, repacked by Revell and these days by Smer) which i got realy realy cheap. And because i like to make conversions and something not so common around, i decided to make russian P-40E UTI (trainer/combat) version with Klimov M-105 engine. I was browsing web yesterday and got some picture and some a bit simplified blueprint , also there are plenty of photos of commercial aftermarket conversions so it might help a bit too. Here is pic of the kit (even in the original box like 18-20 years old, maybe even older ) and how it should look at end While i was searching for the training version of P-40K i found many interesting prototypes, ofc many training versions, but this one was the most interesting to me - TP40K used to teach aircraft mechanics to taxi planes. So i decided to build it along with the russian P-40, just had to order the long tail P-40K kit, so atm no pics of the box/kit, just pics of the real plane at first it looked like this ll be my sideproject but seems as soon as i finish my actual one, this is going to be on the main stage for me
  19. Hi again, So I am planing on buying the Airfix 1/72 Hawk 81-A-2, I know for the markings that it is a model off, should be the A-3. Is there really any difference or are there some needed changes? I would build it with the kit decals, but what are the aftermarket decals for an early USAAF P-40B or would I need decals from some other kit or plane? Thanks.
  20. An absolute pig of a kit OOB!! I love the P-40 so I decided to spruce it up a bit. I drilled out the intake and put some detail in there. I also added the radiator flaps and set them in the open position, (yes, they were individually made and glued on...) the undercarriage doors had to be made as the kit didn't come with any. The tail wheel was made from scrap plastic bits and the guns were made by drilling and gluing in a section of bristle from a cleaning brush. Brush painted with Revell acrylics, spayed with a top coat of Tamiya satin varnish and weathered with pastels. P.S. Canopy was awful, it doesn't have a smooth finish to the glazing and even has an air bubble on the starboard side!!
  21. Hello and good morning, This is my first post and I am relatively new to the forum. My name is Ed and I recently got back into modeling when during a house move my fiancée discovered a few unbuilt kits sitting in a box left over from my childhood. She persuaded me I should have a go at building them - Now I've rediscover the model making bug and thought I'd share my pretty amateurish results with you all. I'm a member of a motoring forum and through a mutual member both here and there, decided I should post up my efforts. Hope you like. All comments appreciated. 22. Hello All, An Airfix Kittyhawk, with a bit of cockpit detailing, new plastic sheet rear windows, plunge moulded undercarriage doors and some other tweaks, finished using the kit scheme and decals (which fought me all the way): I went for Hu 29 and 93, with a 4:1 Hu 34 white:Hu 25 blue mix underneath - next time I will use more blue or less white. It was a fun, low-stress build and I like the scheme and want to do more (but possibly not enough to spoil a Spitfire with a Vokes filter!). Thanks for looking, Adrian
