Now when most of the hangover from the 08-Open contest here in Sweden is over it's time to start something new. And for some unexplained reason I got a sudden urge to start cutting up resin bits. . So, obviously I pulled out the 1/48 Belcher Bits North American BT-9 kit from the stash to make a SweAF Sk 14 Trainer. Not often you see this plane get built in any scale. A preview of what's in the box can be found here. This is what you get to start with, resin parts from Belcher Bits. Plus you get a complete occidental Harvard kit, of which not much will be used. On top of that I shelled out for a replacement engine from Engines & Things, plus I got some help to make new wheels for the Sk 14, as the for the type so charismatic balloon tires where not included. As a fact, I decided to start this build with the engine installation, as I suspect it will require quite a bit of work. These are the bits involved. Engine & Things Wright R-975 Whirlwind engine And the Belcher Bits parts Hmm...It's going to require a bit of TLC to get this puppy to fit. Well, we're of the starting blocks, hope to get the steam up on this one. /Johan

Fresh from the success of my first (almost) built model in a decade (thank you to the EE LIghtning GB hosts and participants), I have exhumed this kit to have a bash at finishing it off. As you'll see, the hard work is mostly done, it's just a matter of paint and dangly bits. If it looks all nice and clean, that's because it is - the box sat open on my modelling bench for a few years, then sat open on the shelf for a few years, then got closed up and stacked in the pile for a few more years. Opening the box was an adventure... after brushing out the cockroach poo and dust that had accumulated in the corners, I washed the kit bits to remove all the nasties, and I now present them for your comment. As I recall, there were no real issues with the kit that weren't solvable with a little bit of thought. Some gaps were filled with sheet styrene (as shown in one photo) and a bit of filler sorted the rest. The main problem was the way the real thing was designed - that overhead intake is just a PITA to work on... On with the show. [post=20150105_154511 by RobG67, on Flickr][/post] [post=20150105_154706 by RobG67, on Flickr][/post] [post=20150105_154837 by RobG67, on Flickr][/post] Markings for the 3 prototypes are included, as well as a NASA tail band. It looks quite striking in the red and natural metal, so that's the way I'm going to do it.

Well, here’s my first RFI on Britmodeller and on my first proper build since I picked up the hobby again after 30 or so years. Treat me gently! A whole number of firsts with this build and learning all the time; First time I’ve used my airbrush, First bit of scratch building (I mucked up the front wheel well cover & had to botch a replacement!), First tricycle landing gear I’ve made (needed weight in the nose), First use of MicroSet & MicroSol, First time I’ve tried weathering. I used the ‘Airfix book of scale modelling’ by Jonathan Mock for inspiration as well as various other sources but it was an OOB build for starters. The build went OK as far as I can remember – managed to break the mechanism for the sliding canopy so that’s glued straight on and the canopy has gone a bit foggy. The undercarriage only just clears the wing stores but it's OOB and as per instructions so I guess that's how it was. I left it pristine for a couple of months building up the courage to try some weathering. Just finishing my next build (Airfix 1/72 Vulcan), which needed some weathering, so watched the Flory Models videos again and took the plunge – reasonably pleased with the result & I glad I tried it. Going to have to get a Mig as a suitably adversary! Here are some pics .... Nice and clean The moment of truth with Flory’s ‘Dark Wash’. The finished article Thanks for looking, Andrew

Originally released in the 1960s and available (yet again) this year it has been superseded by the beautiful offering from Sweet. I'll be building this OOB but using decals from the Sweet kit for 43-6819 flown by Capt. Duane W “Bee” Beeson. The Revell kit comes with decals (rather nice quality as well!) for Yeager's "Glamorous Glen" and I'm saving those for one of the Sweet kits.

Hello, apologies in advance for the noddy question, but I'm trying to ascertain whether the Italeri boxing of the Kinetic F-86F (1:32) is of the -30 or the -40 variety and what the differences are - I believe Kinetic did both? Thanks in advance, Andrew

A fantastic little kit! Went together with no real difficulties, the only thing I had to do was touch up the yellow/black decals on the wing and fin as they were 1.5mm short. Luckily Revell No.12 Yellow gloss acrylic was a perfect match. I love this scale, I just wish more manufacturers would cater for it with kits of this quality. Yes that is a penny!

P-51D Wheels (for Tamiya) 1:32 Eduard Brassin The big Tamiya Mustang has been with us a while now, and these replacement resin wheels should improve the detail of the kit parts, as well as removing those rubberised tyres, which are like marmite with modellers. You either love 'em or hate 'em. I'm in the latter camp, so am pleased to see this set reach the market. Arriving in the standard Brassin clamshell package, the set consists of two resin tyres, with four hubs, two for the front, and two for the rear of each wheel. The wheels are attached to their casting blocks at the bottom of a very slight "weight bulge", so removal will be quite easy. A pair of slim outriggers improve casting and channel bubbles away from the wheels, and should present little clean-up due to their small footprint across the diamond tread pattern. The hubs are similarly mounted and should be easy to remove and clean-up. The spokes and lightening holes will need clearing of a fine flash that is there to ease casting. Poke them out with a needle and clean up with a sharp knife and a little patience. Each pair of hubs then affix to the ridge in the centre of the tyre, giving the correct see-through look to each hub. The depression in the back of the hub should then allow it to slide straight onto the kit gear leg. The mask sheet (not pictured) provides four doughnut shaped masks to aid painting the hubs after the wheel itself has been painted. If you intend on spraying the hubs, you will need to extend the mask with a little extra tape to avoid overspray, as the masks don't cover the whole tyre. This is standard with wheel masks however, so will be familiar to most. Conclusion It's getting difficult not to run out of superlatives for these Brassin tyres, but rest assured that casting quality and detail is up there with the best. If you're a detail freak, you'll need to doctor the "GOOD YBAR" logo on each tyre, but as that's there to avoid copyright issues, that's not too much trouble. Very highly recommended.
