Hi everyone i have been modelling for around 14 years and spent most of it using a rattle can and a good old hairy stick, however i want to start using an airbrush as i seem to be stuggling on getting a great finish. I have around a £100 - £130 and im looking for a setup which i can use to do fine detail painting as well as painting full car bodyshells in 1/24th and also aircraft fueselages too. I have very little knowledge on airbrushes so im putting the question out to you guys. What is the best kit for a airbrush trainee and what could i get for my budget. I would be greatly appreciated for any advice given. Graham

Hi everyone, I have been lurking on here for a while now looking for tips and pointers; so I finally decided to register and ask questions. I am about to return to modelling after a major 35 year hiatus, but having said that, I am really more of a newbie. I used to build airfix kits and add the water slide transfers and that was pretty much it, any painting was done with a cheap brush and humbrol enamels (and not often at that) I more enjoyed the building. Anyway, looking on here has inspired me (especially the work of Andy Moore; I mean WOW). What I do need is advice. I have been bought the bandai 1/12 scale R2 and BB8 kit and I'm wondering where to start with weathering. The kit is still on its sprues so I have yet to make any kind of start, as for materials I have some Sprue cutters, craft knife and diamond files from some of my day job tools (I'm an engineer - mainly in the aircraft and submarines industries; 3 colour smoke pod in the red arrows hawk is some of my work). So, where do I start - I want to build the kits and start to introduce some grime to each droid, bit of dust for bb8 and some oily type grime for R2. Help? -

Hello, After my spitfire (http://www.britmodel...e-starter-mkia/) I'm going to do my second build ever, my first airliner ever. Quite excited for this one. I'll be making the Airfix 737-200 in Brittania Airways colours. As I'm a beginner I'd ask for all the help you guys can give me The unboxing of the kit is here: Tomorrow I'll glue the fuselage halves together and begin construction. I am planning to fill the windows with UHU and maybe cover it up with some Revell Plasto to make it solid (Thin layer of Plasto on the outside with UHU clear glue on the inside part of the windows to reinforce it). What do you guys think? I'll then slap on the window decals later. If anybody has any tips before I even start, please share your knowledge oh wise ones! Wish me luck! Hamdhan -
Well I've finally sorted out a space to do my modelling, and installed a worktop and made a paint rack. Soooo, it's time I started to make a model, this will be the first one in about 33 years so I've decided to keep it basic so as to re-learn any old skills that I might of had back in the day. I decided the first model should be an 1/72nd Airfix Chipmunk, my thoughts being that this should be an "out of the box" basic build with an easy paint job to match, just to get me in the swing of things. There's only 2 sprues of parts and 1 sprue of clear parts (2 choices of canopy), the typical Airfix instructions and some basic decals. Upon inspection there'a a fair bit of flash (not too much of a problem), and I notice on the inside of one of the wings is the date of the mould... 1969! Boy, this is an old kit, and it shows, the canopy is like looking through the bottom of a jam jar, lol, I'm now thinking that maybe I should have chosen one of the "new tooling" options from Airfix, but I've got it out, so onward I plunge... I'll give it a scrub up in some mildly soapy water to get rid of any nasties... -
As per title, my first model in over twenty years. I've been lurking on here for a while and after taking 12 months to complete this thought I'd share it as many of you on here have been an inspiration. Overall, I'm pretty pleased, Would like to add a little more detail with each build (Airfix Tiffy next). Wash on the bottom went well, pleased with the paintjob considering I only have two brushes. Disappointed to see the photography shows some mistakes I didn't spot before (paint creep on canopy and paint not getting into some of the details). Also the canopy masking lifted as I was spraying a matt coat slightly fogging the left side of the canopy. Oh, and I found the photography hard. Be kind! Chomping at the bit to start the Tiffy -
Hi All, Just thought I would create a thread for my first ever model in progress. It's a 1989 MPC Darth Vader TIE Fighter (the one that needs loads of sanding and filling ) Apologies for the slightly poor quality pictures, they were taken on my phone. Regardless, I hope you all enjoy the updates. Steps completed over the last few days. Primed Yesterday I primed all the main parts of the fuselage Lighting test I also tested my first ever LED lighting circuit. Obviously, the fuselage is not stuck together here I just wanted to get a feel for what it might look like. Cheers, Rob

My first kit that I have finished in a good many years sorry about the quality of the pics. Decals have silvered a lot but "hay ho". Really did enjoy doing this kit Rodders

Dear modellers, Recent surgery has given me an opportunity to “get back into modelling”, something I last did, well, some 30 years ago. Along with the military stuff, I have fond memories of building airliners, notably Airfix’s Trident (BEA livery), a BAC 111 (British Caldonian) and a VC10 (BOAC). So, I thought I’d try one now……Revell’s Airbus A319, in British Airways livery, mainly because these beasties flit over my house every hour on their way into Heathrow. I would like to make “a good go of it” but perusing this forum has left me quite overwhelmed in terms of the tools, techniques and tricks you guys use to make your models represent the real thing. The quality I have to say here is pretty awesome. Long gone it seems are the days of the simple brush and the Quality Street tin full of Humbrol enamels! Therefore, what I’d like to ask is, in respect to airliner modelling per se, what would be your top five tips for a “returnee”? Many thanks flexi ps. it looks like passenger windows are going to be a challenge - what happened to those clear plastic strip windows?

Hello all, Apologies for what is an undeniably 'newbie' question. I've tried searching through this forum but haven't actually managed to find an answer to my question, despite learning a lot of interesting PSI-related things along the way... I've recently become enthralled with modelling aircraft after a long hiaitus, and decided (having been inspired by builds on this and other forums) to invest in an airbrush setup. As is the way with the uninformed, I got a 'terrific' deal via Amazon of a KMS 18 compressor and TWO! dual action airbrushes for a silly amount of money. Too good to be true, of course. The siphon-feed brush is OK I suppose, but the gravity fed brush has caused no end of headaches, culminating in the nozzle shearing, leaving the thread wedged inside the body. It was clean, un-gunged and very carefully replaced - note, this was after cleaning! Game over, not worth replacing. So I've invested in an Iwata Eclipse HP CS, which seems like the ideal brush for the type of work I like to do... My idiotic questions run thus: I understand that there are inaccessible O-rings inside the body of the brush - so will: a) enamel paint/thinners corrode these? (I typically use acrylics, but need to branch out for certain metallic colours) liquid reamer destroy them? c) Alclad or similar lacquers ruin the whole thing? Just looking to prevent expensive mistakes! Any advice (or re-direction to appropriate thread) would be very much appreciated! Al
