  1. In no real order other than by aircraft type kinda... my 2015 with a little bit of 2016 thrown in, but will note by the 2016 photos! It's been a good year I must admit, and I've only been abroad once to Switzerland 'spotting' for the day.... All Russian/Soviet/Ukrainian/Eastern European types as these are my all time favourite.... Hope they are of interest! and two from tonight (07/01/16) taken at East Midlands...
  2. Last build of the year, and it was a quick one. I picked this kit out of the stash for two reasons; firstly I needed a guinea pig to test the new Vallejo Metal acrylics. Secondly, the kit had lots of loose parts, all floating around in one of Italeri's open-ended boxes, and I had already lost one of the horizontal stabilizers. Since I read some reviews of this kit I was already aware of some of its pitfalls, namely an ill-fitting intake, badly fitting transparencies and zillions of rivets. I dealt with the first two issues but left the last one alone. My previous experience with Vallejo's paints was not too good; in my experience they spray beautifully but take very long to harden, if at all. However, some good press on the new Metal acrylics made me decide to give them a shot. I've posted my experiences with them in this topic. Sufficient to say I found them quite good and I will use them more often going forward. I used some Humbrol Polished aluminium on the maintenance panel and airbrakes and Gunze Metalcote on the intake ring to break the expanse of silver. I've seen MiGs build as a patchwork of different shades of metal, but I couldn't find much evidence for this in pictures, though in fairness I didn't look very hard The kit itself was for a long time the best MiG-15 on the market, but it has of course been completely blown out of the water by Eduard's new kit. At first I considered doing a double-build of the kits to compare them, but on inspecting the parts, it was a foregone conclusion and I decided it would be better to build the Italeri kit as a test bed for the paint and then do the Eduard kit later, and do it justice. I didn't use any aftermarket with the exception of some Albion Alloys tubing for the gun barrels.
  3. Hello, A question I have always had about Russian fighters is why are some of Mig and Sukhoi's designs so outwardly similar. To my eye it always looks like Sukhoi make a bigger version of whatever Mig make. Almost as if Mig made 3 series BMW's and a few months later Sukhoi bring out the 7 series. Is this intentional sharing of aerodynamic data and principles? Is this a by-product of the command economy (this is a good fighter, better make our fighter look the same or it will not get built) thing? Is it just a massive co-incidence? examples; Mig 21 & SU-22 I know the SU-22 has VG but the silhouette is similar. Mig 23 & SU-24 size is the biggest difference here. Mig 29 & SU-27 size again. On other designs such as the SU-15 Flagon & Mig 25 the solution to the same problem was very different and both succesful in their own right, so why the similarities elsewhere? The US aircraft industry has some similar designs from different designers, F-14 & F-15 both use twin tail & wide spaced engines but don't share a silhouette. The best non Soviet example is the Dassault Mystere and North American Sabre which are very similar, but the Mirage went a very different way from the Lightning. Though not admittedly the Corvair Dart. The 3 examples above have always made me wonder if the design similarities are deliberate or not, can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.
  4. Hello everyone! Here are a couple shots of my recently finished Eduard 1/72 Mig 15bis from the Royal Class kit. Finished OOB except for the ariel wire, and glued to the base because silly me didn't put enough nose weight in. Finished with Tamiya spraycans. Please let me know what you think, I'm always open to new ideas!
  5. Hi All, While I'm happy with most of my standard weathering methods I often wander down the paint aisle of my local hobby shop. I also browse online and I see Mig Jimenez's name/work/methods thrown around quite a bit. I always thought that Vallejo brand paints were somewhat associated with Mig; then I noted that there was AK Interactive which also seemed to be associated with Mig and then I see "Ammo" by Mig Jimenez and finally there's "Mig Productions" which also produce a number of weathering powders etc. All the products SEEM to be similar but the lines also seem to differentiate themselves in various ways - either with a broader selection or with specific focus. What I'm curious about is this: Are these different product lines really that different? For example, I wouldn't want to order Ammo's "Neutral Brown" panel wash and AK Interactive's Paneliner For Brown and Green Camouflage only to find out that they are, basically, the same thing. Overall.. I'm confused by those product lines and the various amounts of weathering items which are offered within each of them because they all seem.. well.. "the same" (for lack of better wording). Any insight on these products? Cheers, Dave
  6. I'll be brazen once again and bother everybody with announcement for two new books from Harpia, including one from your very own. - http://www.harpia-publishing.com/galleries/AMV6/index.html'>Arab MiGs, Volume 6 (clicky for animated pre-view => http://www.harpia-publishing.com/galleries/AMV6/index.html ) This is a preliminary end of this series, which over the last seven years of work and publishing turned into a sort of 'encyclopaedia of Arab air forces at war with Israel, 1955-1973'. This volume is covering the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War (also 'Yom Kippour' or 'October' or 'Teshreen' War), from 9 October 1973, until the Israeli-Syrian cease-fire in May 1974. It bristles with related stories and photos, of course, and is richly illustrated with artworks/colour profiles (some 43 of these) too. So, definitely a 'must have' for any modeller curious to build authentic Arab jets from 1973 (BTW, as usually, we're not only covering MiGs and Sukhois, but other types in service, so that Iraqi Hunters, Libyan Mirages, all sorts of helicopters and transports, and even Moroccan F-5As are covered too). - http://www.harpia-publishing.com/galleries/RuWp/index.html'>Russia's Warplanes (clicky for animated pre-view => http://www.harpia-publishing.com/galleries/RuWp/index.html ) Right on time (considering what are Russians doing in Syria), here comes a volume offering a unique 'catalogue' of all Russian-made aircraft - plus helicopters, UAVs, etc. - currently in production and in world-wide service. This one is designed to become indispensable source of reference, so it's structured as a sort of 'handbook', listing all variants, their equipment, armament etc., and its author, Piotr Butowski, is really the authority on this topic. Of course, this volume is richly illustrated too - and then with plenty of truly exclusive photographs (from Piotr, but also from a number of relatively unknown, but very active Russian military aviation photographers).
  7. I'm just finishing off a few MiG's from the stash ready for SMW at Telford..... MiGs aren't really my 'thing' - but I do like oddball stuff - so here are a few of the more unusual Mikoyans..... Here's the five I have made so far....... .... and in no particular order..... MiG E-7PD STOL testbed.... Amodel kit MiG-23PD - STOL testbed that led to the swing-wing MiG-23..... Art Model kit MiG A-144-2 - used to test the ogival wings of the Tupolev Tu-144SST..... Modelsvit kit. MiG I-3U - predecessor to the MiG-19....... Modelsvit. MiG E-150 Heavy Interceptor.... Modelsvit. More images on my website .... here (you need to scroll down to the bottom) They will all be on display on our Soviet Aircraft SIG stand at SMW Telford - see you there ? Ken

  10. Hi Everyone, Here are some of my photos from the Eastbourne airshow, I've tried to pick my favourites out of the almost 1,000 photos I took, but still this is going to be very photo heavy. If you want to view the full 135 photos, they are in an album on my facebook, linked here : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.488656594634727.1073741851.100004711722357&type=1&l=0724244a56 Anyway lets kick off the photos, I hope you like them. I'm trying to persuade my missus to let me go to either Bournemouth or Shoreham airshow (preferably Bournemouth) this weekend. Chinook Jet Provost Breitling Wingwalkers Typhoon Spitfire MiG-15 Grob Tutor Bulldog Sea King Eastbourne's Tamar class Lifeboat (At High Speed) Hawk T.2 Blenheim Norwegian Vampires P-51 Mustang "Ferocious Frankie" Vulcan XH558 Dakota Patrouille Reva The Blades Red Arrows Anyway, thats all of the photos I'm going to post. You can view the rest on the facebook link at the top. These photos were all taken with a Canon EOS 20D DSLR body with a 100 - 400 mm canon lens stuck on the front of it. Boy was that heavy without a tripod, but made life easier when tracking the planes. They have all been edited to improve colour balance etc. Please let me know what you think. All the best, Rick
  11. Okay then here goes with number 2!! I have decided that despite having another build on the go that I have to make a start on this one. I will be using the Hobby Boss Mig-17F with a replacement ejector sear from Neomega. The decals are from a Carpena sheet and the Zotz roundels of the world sheet covering Southern Africa. Other than the seat this will be pretty much OOTB. Thanks to some info supplied by Tom Cooper (thanks Tom) I will be finishing it in the colours worn by ex-East German Air Force aircraft that they supplied to Mozambique, that is green and brown upper-surfaces with a pale blue underneath. Below are the usual kit and other stuff photos to show what I will be using. Thanks for looking, and I hope you enjoy the build. Craig.
  12. Hello all, After a recent marathon build of a Williams Bros racer with loads of research and scratchbuilding I wanted to change tack and do something where all the detail comes ready-made in the kit box! I got the Trumpeter Mig-23 some time back with Xmas-present cash, and at a bargain price. I'd read good things about it, and seen some special builds (Arkady 72's on BM in particular) so pulled it from the (...one of the...) stash cupboards. There's a lot in the box, including many store options, surface detail is crisp and restrained, and there are some regular Polish AF decal options to go with the spectacular Czech special scheme on the lid. The instructions and paint guides look good at first. At first only though, as they are actually rather vague and a lot of test fitting is needed to help sub-assemblies fit as planned. In particular the paint guide is frustrating as while nice 'art', the placement arrows for the many stencils are very hard to see, lost against the dark cammo. The cammo demarcation is also hard to make out, so I'll be doing some research! Anyway, those are minor issues, as once started it's a pretty clean simple build, and I'll be aiming to get to the painting stage quickly as I want to play around with a weathered finish - not 'left to pasture' but far from pristine. (I should say now that I'm not doing much research on this one, so there will be some artistic licence used...) Argh - Photobucket is playing up, so fewer pics than I wanted to share in this first post! Here is the start of the cockpit tub, with an old spare seat (can't recall the brand). I've since taken the seat out again to remove some base and rear rails so it sits lower and further back - canopy won't close otherwise! Engine sub-assembly, intake trunking and wheelwells in place: Quite happy with the IP and sidewalls, I used some spare Airscale dials (not accurately I should add) as the kit's ones were laughable. Everything else is paint, the blue-green is a mix of my own matched to pics and spare Eduard colour etch. Main wheelbay, I may add a little extra wiring and tubes, to busy things up a bit. You can also see that the wing sub-assembly doesn't mate well with the fuselage, so some of the lower fuselage will need surgery. and, before I shoot Photobucket and turn in, here's the swing-wing assembly (it works too!): More soon, welcome all your comments as ever, Take care, Matt

  15. Hi Everyone, Here is my 2nd completed build for today : Mikoyan MiG 1.44 MFI Advanced Multi Role Fighter Technology Demonstrator. The landing gear seems to have the usual Revell problem where 1 side seems to collapse after gluing into place, but can be made to fit with a bit of work (which I have done). The kit comes with 2 different schemes for the prototype aircraft. I have built it in the second scheme as its slightly more colourful. According to Wikipedia, the NATO reporting name for the MiG 1.44 is Flatpack. There was another version which had the NATO reporting name of Foxglove, which was a possible aircraft for production. Here is a link to the Wikipedia page about the aircraft : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan_Project_1.44 Anyway onto the photos : The only thing that this good looking jet needs is some weapons to go under the wings as they are really bare with just the pylons under the wings. I have gotta find something to make those wings look a bit better. Comments are welcome, thanks for looking. Rick

    MiG-29

Hi guys, spotted this for £3 in Poundstretchers, can anyone confirm the accuracy of this kit?
  20. Hello, I have finished the pencil. Lovely kit, a lot of fun. To be honest I'd buy another one and paint it in Cuban livery. I've painted with Alclad2 Aluminium and Dark Aluminium colours. Cockpit colour matched with prepainted PE parts by mixing 50/50 Gunze paints H25 and H46. Sorry for the pictures. Decided to use blue background and the sheet couldn't be ironed to desired state. I've removed bad surroundings in Photoshop:/ I'll need to invest in some proper photographic vinyl.. I hope you like it anyway! Thanks Bart
  21. Hi Everyone, Here is my next project : Revell 1:72 scale MiG 1:44 MFI I bought this with my birthday money from Oliver (one of two kits bought through the forum). Anyway onto the photos of the box and sprues: I will be starting on this in a couple of days, the kit has been washed ready for painting to begin..... Look out for the first update..... Regards, Rick

  23. Anyone know for sure if pitot probes on MiG 21s have a slight kink or change of direction? I'm sure I've seen photos of this but none of my plans show it.
