  1. During the course of the Matchbox GB, I got so excited that I started to pick up other kits. Still a week to go before this GB finishes so there is time to squeeze in one of the kits not covered yet - a favourite aircraft of mine, the Curtiss P-40. Such a pugnacious-looking piece of US heavy metal and much has been written about the instant appeal of painting shark's teeth on the big jawline! Matchbox offered the P-40N Warhawk version with a skull motif so here we go.... Surprise...when I bought the 'unstarted' kit, I noticed that someone had already applied some paint to the spinner. Got going on the first few stages of the build - as usual, a very good fit of parts and next to no flash (just a little at the rear of the fuselage pieces). I'll leave the pilot out for now until he is painted but cracking on with assembling the fuselage and the prop.
  2. Hi folk's,hoping it's third time lucky after m issing the deadline on the last two GB,s I'm gonna have a go at Revell's re-pop of the Matchbox Spitfire. apologies for it not being an original but at just over a tenner at a recent sale it had to be worth a punt.I know I had a crack at this kit many moons ago when new and can guess at what would have been for the younger me an over complicated build never got far! So a nice relaxed OOB build on the card's don't care about the fault's or innaccuracies I need after a five week lay off a mojo kickstart, see you soon.
  3. Well, Matchbox was always fêted for its bipes so here we go with a rather breathless build of the lovely old Fury. This could go one of two ways... Here is the kit: Time to read the instructions... quickly!
  4. It's one of my all-time favourite aeroplanes and not one that I've ever managed to build properly - so why not try and do one in a week? Yes, it's the Gloster Gladiator as my second and final entry in this GB. My first attempt at a Gladiator was with the old tool Airfix kit. It went together OK but looked rather anorexic. My second attempt at a Gladiator was the 1/48 Roden Sea Gladiator which collapsed into a gluey blancmange. Third time lucky? Let's hope so with the old Matchbox kit repopped by Revell: If my Hawker Fury was anything to go by, I hope that this will be a confidence-building experience. I've got all manner of decals for Gladiators but given the time available I'm going to stick with an all-silver pre-war scheme. The question is: which one? All have their merits and all will be done at some point. As I've done the silver-and-yellow Fury I feel it would be quite nice to come up with something that complements it. I fell in love with the Gladiator as a small boy on my first visit to The Shuttleworth Collection when their example was in 72 Sqn colours, so that has appeal... ... but the 73 Sqn scheme of 'Cobber' Kain that Shuttleworth's Gladiator wears today is a lot more attractive to my eye, and I've got those decals in the new tool Airfix kit... ...and then there's the 87 Sqn scheme that is in my Pavla upgrades box... ...and as a final choice there's the 3 Sqn decals which come with the Revell kit. It's plain silver all over but I love the art deco '3' for the tail. So while I'm getting on with building a standard silver Gladiator I'm going to throw this one open to the floor with a poll. Which scheme would you like to see in the Gallery next weekend? All thoughts gratefully received.
  5. I goofed up on the post a bit so I think you can see the same twice. My apologies. The kit is 99.94% done (as is, "It floats!" for any US commercial from the 50's buffs out there). Sharp eye might notice the landing gear doors not on (should be later this evening) the gun and rear cockpit need to be finished, canopy frames not painted yet and the exhaust pipe not in place (tomorrow's tiny battle). GREAT GREAT kit! The more I build Matchbox the more I love Matchbox...growing up in Michigan we has Lindberg, Testors, and the occasional Airfix. I never even built a Matchbox until I was past 50! I love them!. Greg in OK
  6. I will be in with this. Greg in OK
  7. Ooof, I don't think I have posted anything, actually for that matter I don't think, if I'm not mistaken, I have put anything together for about 9 months now. Tidied up my model area and just got a half decent compressor (Edward the Compressor I call him). I think I am slowly beginning to understand the different materials and how to use them. I still have a very heavy hand and am too messy. Spend a lot of time fixing silly mistakes. Also got some decent glue. So I feel this will be a pivot point and hopefully the last of my messy builds. Not finished yet, got the jeep to do, I will use the box decals even though they are for NZ (so not historically acurate for the PPA), still I was dying to get something up, builds a bit of morale. Will start another small build thread soon - next up will be the Humble Humber and if I make an effort it will be somewhat tidier. Thanks again for all YOUR inspiring work which is so encouraging!
  8. Just getting around to starting this build - and thanks to Bone Hammer who first mentioned a possible build of the He115 but has very kindly given me a green light to pick this kit as he may have trouble locating his during a house move. I've never built a Matchbox kit but the calibre of the modellers wanting to be involved in this GB certainly caught my interest and as has happened before, I'm now wondering what I have been missing! I had become aware that in their heyday, Matchbox had many kits in their range not covered by others and the He 115 seems to be one of those. Also, I was made aware that there was actually originally a Frog kit of the He 115 which was not released by Frog before they closed down and this was taken on by Revell, who also took on the Matchbox kit when they closed down - and I read up on a comparison previously posted on Britmodeller before I went a-buying. So, a very interesting background. When I went looking for a He 115 kit on ebay, I actually ended up with three of them - the first had been started (unbeknownst to the seller?), the second didn't have swastikas in the decals and was a different set of colours and the third was eventually as expected. Since a 3-colour kit seems to be a Matchbox 'differentiator', I propose to build one of these kits 'bare' as someone may have done way back then, to see how good the base level and quality of this kit was, as follows: 1. retain the 3-colours - no painting other than picking out some details upon completion. 2. build OOB - no after market bits 3. minimise any blemishes on the plastic finish such as gluey fingerprints or over enthusiastic trimming/sanding - the hard bit! 4. use any 'modeller hints' available in the Matchbox publications at the time the kit was available The second kit I will complete in one of the suggested colour schemes and deploy as many of the model enhancing techniques I have mastered as yet. The third 'started' kit will be used for spares and for testing any balance weighting required etc. So, looking forward to getting started - may take a little time so patience please!
  9. I started this kit very early in the GB and finished it completely just today. In my defense, I took off a couple of months for health issues. (Much better now.) I bought this kit for $3 but it was in a NASTY box with NASTY instructions and decals (which where both tossed). I could have found some decals but when I washed the kit I found it was badly warped. So I decided to build a WWII 1/72 scale "ID Model" which tend to have warped a lot anyway. First I looked for a photo of an ID model of the He-115 to make sure they existed and yes indeed they did. This is the ID model I took my inspiration from: And here is my finished Matchbox "ID Model: and finally at home with my other "ID" models hanging above my workplace. Greg in OK
  10. Although I've already got one entry into this Group Build, with Peter Hall releasing the etched set for HMS Ariadne I couldn't resist entering my second ship. Ariadne is in an original but very battered Matchbox PK 61 box. I only bought Ariadne quite recently as my interest in the class had been piqued after reading an article on the class. Ariadne will benefit from Peter Hall’s Atlantic Models new etched set. I have Warship Profile no. 38 as primary reference plus whatever references I have in my library or has already been gleaned from the web. Improvements will generally follow what is in the etched set although she may need some additional work depending on when exactly I’m going to depict her. A colour schemes has yet to be decided. Other details to be added could include 3d printed light AA if needed plus crew figures, these might etched or 3d printed also. By all rights she should be belting along as the class were renowned for the high top speed. I might add some extra hull below the waterline to depict her heel as she turns. I will also need to add some flags. These might be hand painted or use Mike McCabe’s excellent Starling Models flags.
  11. I have HMS Kelly in the stash and I might just be tempted to join the GB. I have lots of goodies to add too.......
  12. As the host I can't stay behind with what I want to build. So out came the stash of Matchbox kits. And then I found it. The Dornier Do-18G-1. I bought it for about 15 quid a few years ago. As I will build it also for the Water and floatplane GB. This will be needed to be started first. The top cover the back cover. I have chosen to do scheme 1. Here is the content of the box. The decals still looks very decent with their protective sheet of paper on it. Here is the manual and something extra to replace the mg's. So here it is. Cheers,
  13. And this will be my third build. Here are some pictures of the kit. Like the Heinkel He-111 I will start this after Telford. The Box. And the content. And some extra's. I have a decalsheet from model decals (set 49) and a pitot tube from Master. Cheers,
  14. Hello everyone. As I have never participated in a Group Build on Britmodeler before, I'm not certain what I must do. I have not "registered" or signed up anywhere special, and am not certain whether to post here, or in the regular W.I.P., which I have frequented from time to time. If I am in error, please advise my next course of action. But for now, I'll begin here. For some reason, I had it in my head that this build would start Jan 1st, so I am late to the party! I had already determined to add my Matchbox RF-101B (kit PK-411, IIRC), because I needed a new variant for my collection of USAF VooDoos. I have had this kit laying about for decades, and as with many other folks', it was definitely the lowest on the F-101 totem pole of builds. That being said, I felt that this would be a quick, easy build, with another build in the books. As you will see, when I actually got into it, various gremlins reared their ugly heads... To begin, the kit at first looked like this: I had long ago tossed the old "loose ends" box for fear of losing some parts. (This was to be prophetic, but not a salvation!). The fuel tank halves had been glued together, and almost the entire airplane had it's panel lines re-scribed, as was the fashion in the early 80's. I had decided to go with a made up cockpit, as the kit's was really way too simple, and again, I was going for an easy "quickie". The first mod was to drill out the little light window on the left side of the rear cockpit, which was then opened to size with various tiny needle files: Next, a piece of old clear plastic kit stand from the spares box was sawed up to provide a lens piece. When nearly the precise size, the edges were sanded at a slight bevel, so that the lens would fit down into the hole, yet protrude a bit above the surface. This allowed me to apply liquid cement only to the edges, and keep it off the lens face: Later, it would be sanded down and polished smooth, as shown in the next pic. Meanwhile, using white canopy cement, I glued the resin cockpit tub into the right fuse half, along with some lead fishing sinkers (Figure "A"). (About 20 years ago, I bought a couple hundred pounds of 70/30 lead solder bars, as the old automotive body men used to use, for around $.50/lb, for casting lead soldiers. I still have enough left to skoff at the lead police!) Figure "B" represents a plastic card structure to hold the cockpit tub level, while globs of white canopy glue were heaped to hold everything in place: I decided to use an old resin F-101A cockpit tub that I had laying about. I also have a Revell F-101B kit to build, and since I had bought a resin cockpit set for that, I will use the Revell instrument panels, their decals, ejection seat, control sticks, etc., on this kit, which will hopefully upgrade the kit a bunch: Well, that's it for a start. Next time, I'll get into my boo-boos, and how I hope to solve them. I hope I can get this "simple" project done by the end of February! Later, Ed
  15. Hello all! A really great range of aircraft to find myself amongst here - the best of luck to all of you taking part! I'm going with the <'venerable'/'well-known'/'not entirely without problems'> Dornier Do 18 from Matchbox, meaning that it will require some not insignificant work turning the 'G' variant OOB into an earlier 'D'. I'll take you through some of these issues in a moment. The Roy Huxley box-art is characteristically gorgeous and evocative: I don't intend holding things up by doing a kit review of already well-documented issues but will simply point out the things that need doing for a 'D'. The transparencies have already been thrown away on the grounds of optical thickness: I should add that the kit came without instructions or decals. The former I've sourced in digital form from Scalemates, the latter will be dealt with at the time by a combination of painting and printing my own decals. The particular aircraft I'm intent on modifying the kit to represent is M7+YK, a Dornier Do 18 D-3 from 2/Kü.Fl.Gr 506. Piloted by Lt z See Wilhelm Freiherr von Reitzenstein she was shot down by Skuas from H.M.S Ark Royal on 26th Sept. 1939, reputedly the first Luftwaffe loss of the war (though this has been questioned in some quarters). Other crew members were the observer: Leutnant zur See Ernst Korner, Radio operator: Unteroffizier Walter Heckt, and Flight Engineer: Unteroffizier Fritz Schmalfeldt. My interest in this incident was piqued by discovering a wartime HMSO volume on the Ark Royal from 1942 in a Dorset bookshop back in the summer: In it was a sequence of shots of HMS Somali rescuing the crew of M7+YK, that I hadn't seen presented together before: There was something about seeing this sequence that gave an immersion in the incident that a single image alone can't reproduce. For some reason the sunglint on water in the final image is resonant of a particular moment in time and place. History, in fact... There is little substantive material published in web or book form on the Do 18 to base a detailed build upon - let alone the 'D' variant - so I purchased a complete set of flying and maintenance manuals from Udo over at Luftfahrt-archiv-hafner. The level of detail is astonishing in them and despite the contemporary gothic font hampering my minimal language skills, provides all that is required for this project. If I punch up a composite of kit and ladenplan for a 'D': ...you can see that Matchbox did an excellent job of getting length and much of the shape right for the most part. Same for the dual-engine upper-works: Only some minor addition of shape at the rear beneath prop where it curves inwards. Aside from panel lines - both those present needing toning down and those needing scribing-in - the main things this needs to be 'D-ed' up are as follows. 1. Complete re-shaping of nose - from sharp prow-like 'G' to rounded 'D': You can see where I've sketched the difference in between the two in the image above. 2. Propellor blades and bosses. Not exactly sure how yet but these need to be reshaped and re-profiled, with the rear and front props being slightly different diameters as well (don't ask me which way round, I've got it written-down somewhere...). 3. Interior. Supplied cockpit and other interior parts need completely re-doing - I'll cram as much other detail in as seems appropriate at this scale. Supplied kit guns are risible (the cannon for the'G' turret is just a stick!) so I've a set of these on order, plus some spare mags to line the gunnery positions: That's the only sop to AM parts, everything else will be scratch built. The question of how the aircraft will be presented in the final display has required some thought. It was no real temptation to try and create a diorama of the shots taken from the Ark Royal publication as to be quite honest, I'm no great fan of building dioramas of actual events. What I want to try is something I've not seen done with this aircraft before: having a number of the access panels opened up as if it is being overhauled prior to an operation, fuel tanks being removed etc. I suspect lack of references have stopped people trying this before but with the maintenance manuals to hand, you've got to try and give your audience something different - haven't you? How far we proceed down that route depends on the deadline for the GB or course, as well as family and work commitments, but let's see how far we can push the process. Conscious of the 20% rule, I've done some preparatory work in vacforming a new canopy and starting to re-shape the nose profile, but nothing to contravene the rules. I'll post some shots of these processes up tomorrow rather than make today's starting installment too heavy. Looking forwards to this immensely and hope you are too! Tony
  16. My Bf-109 is nearly finished and it's time to think of what to do next. I've always liked the Tempest (not as much as I like Spitfires mind) and, as my Academy MkV has just been written-off after receiving Cat E damage in an accident involving wrapping paper, it seems like a good idea to join the Tempest fun. (Needless to say, it didn't cost 45p) Sprues: Decals: A bag of goodies from a scrapped Academy Tempest. I'll definately use the cockpit bits.) I'm undecided as to whether to do a MkII or a MkVI... I have an Xtradecals sheet that has some nice MkIIs (but no MkVIs). Luckily, I'll not have to make a decision until Wednesday. Thanks for looking.
  17. Hi folk's just a couple of pic's of my penultimate build for the Matchbox GB,not a bad little kit sadly the decal's were useless only just managed to save the titles to at leastput something on it!Many thank's for looking in.
  18. My entry: Scheme will be as the boxtop, with colours subject to guesswork/whatever I have in my Gunze collection that looks close. A
  19. Hi all, Just got this one finished for the Matchbox GB here on the forum - those with an eye for general accuracy or rivets, please look away now! Talk about a trip down memory lane. While I never built this one as a kid, I remember their kits and great boxart and how they seemed to be in every newsagent and corner shop. Happy days. The full build thread is here but to recap: Kit: Matchbox PK-128 Build: OOB except for tarting up the pilots' seats: Paints: White from a rattle can, all others Revell Acrylic with a brush. Klear. Decals: From the kit! This aircraft XX915 was written off in a non-fatal crash in 1984. Taking off from Boscombe Down on a routine flight, No 1 engine failed and the pilot Sqn. Ldr. Tim Allen began to prepare for an emergency landing. During approach, No 2 engine ignited fuel leaking from the failed No 1 engine and the pilot ejected and landed nearby at Porton Down. The aircraft crashed onto open farm land 0.75 miles from there. You can read the full accident report here. 20. So in a moment of 70's fuelled Matchbox nostalgia, I'm also throwing my hat in with this one Bought in another moment of nostalgia from an online auction site a number of years back. Matchbox Jaguar T2 PK-128 Box top by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr Love that box art on the back. Omani scheme is cool. Matchbox Jaguar T2 PK-128 Box rear by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr The second hand contents were carefully repackaged... Matchbox Jaguar T2 PK-128 bag by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr But everything there and accounted for. Decals look ok but will put them in the window for a week or two. Matchbox Jaguar T2 PK-128 contents by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr And a rub of a pencil to reveal it's 1973 origins, probably the single seater kit? Scalemates has this as a 1983 release.. Matchbox Jaguar T2 PK-128 close up by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr I'll be honest, I have very low expectations of this one...but I can't resist that ETPS scheme and I've always liked the Jaguar and Matchbox. Wish me luck - I think I'll need it! Thanks for looking and good luck with your Matchbox builds. Dermot
  21. I wasn’t on the list but couldn’t pass up the opportunity of the GB. I’m going to have a crack at this badger And the sprue shots Got to love that chrome. On closer inspection, I’m missing the decals and the clear parts. Decals sourced online, screen to be bodged when the time comes. And while I was ordering stuff, I ordered some Albion Alloys tubing just to keep @nimrod54 happy. Plan to replace the exhausts with it. How do you get a clean cut with the metal? On a plus note the man cave is finished!
  22. This will be my second build for this GB. I bought this kit two years ago at the Telford show in the kit swap. I thought I had bought one kit, but after having a closer at home I noticed there were two kits in the box. I had also bought a F-14 box and a BAC Lightning box. Also these were bouble in the box. The upside is that I have double fun. The second kit will go back in the stash. Here are some pictures of the content and some extra's. the Box (that is going back in the stash) The content. The kit was just started (I think) when I bought it. The former owner had the underside windows cut out. These were in the original kit closed with the original brown plastic. Also were some parts already painted as you can see. Here are the extra's. Exhausts and gun barrels from Quickboost. And some decals from Superscale. I think I will use the decals for a KG 55 Night-bomber during the Battle of Britain. Top Picture. I think I will start this after the Telford show. Cheers,
  23. So I'm also in with a Dauphin, picked up at Telford last year deep among the 2nd hand kits.. IMG_6063 IMG_6064 Being Irish, when this kit was first issued in the mid 80s was like Christmas for some of us modellers as five Dauphin 2's were soon to be delivered to the Irish Air Corps between June and December 1986. Operated by SAR Squadron, No 3 Support Wing, the five aircraft combined SAR, Air Ambulance, naval ops (with the Irish Naval Service aboard the LE Eithne P-31) and VIP transport. The aircraft served with great distinction and bravery with Irish Dauphin crews receiving some of the highest national and international decorations for their SAR work in rescues of the Capitaine Pleven II in 1989 and Locative in 1990. These missions were often at night and at extended ranges over stormy Atlantic seas in an a/c type not really suited to that role. Sadly a/c 248 was lost in a fatal crash along with its crew of four returning from a Search & Rescue mission in July 1999 in Co Waterford. When our SAR helicopter service was privatised soon after, the Dauphins were retired from service between 2003 and 2004 and all four were sold in 2006 and now operate with the Chilean Navy. If you want to read more about Irish SAR ops, I can recommend this book by Lorna Siggins. I've previously built the Revell version of this kit as an Irish machine and want to try it again but do a better job with it....my last attempt was a bit rough and ready! . by Dermot Moriarty, on Flickr And that's it. Thanks for reading and look forward to seeing your Matchbox builds! Dermot
  24. Hi folk's coming to the end of my Matchbox GB entries with the Buccaneer,as with the other's OOB wheels up on the stand, kit decal's didn't attempt to correct the poor fitting canopy take it as it is a piece of 1970's nostalgia, many thank's for taking a look.
  25. Morning folk's,hope you don,t m ind indulging me in one last little Matchbox build for the ongoing GB,Revell,s re-box of the AA version of the white half track,as usual the base is supplied as per the original,as there is no figures I decided to pose it damaged and abandoned in a winter scene, thank's for looking in. One last photo pre the "snow storm".
