  1. Hi Some photos from Biggin Hill on Friday afternoon are below. It was great seeing the 2 Lancasters.
  2. Hi, I am considering my next build and I am drawn to a Revell Lanc that I have in the stash. I quite fancy doing a Coastal Command a/c in the overall Dark Grey scheme, but cannot find much info so far via google. Can anyone point me in the right direction? As regard to the colour, would it be gloss or matt (or somewhere in between)? Also are there any major differences between the bomber and the Coastal Command variant? Any help appreciated. FF
  3. Here is a rather odd Lancaster! Sweden bought one ex-RAF Lanc in 1951 as a testbed for Swedish jet engines planned for Saab Lansen and Draken. This aircraft was designated Tp 80 and flew a great number of test flights 1951-56. However, the engine project was abandoned and instead, it was used for test of afterburners. Sadly, it was lost in a crash in 1956. I used Revell's model (Airfix' was not released when this project started) and a conversion set from Top Gun. I also added some details to the Merlin engine. The Top Gun set was far from good. Poor fitting and lots of small holes in the plastic. I used Tamiya Colours and Vallejo aluminium. Decals came from my own archive. Another oddity is the twin tail wheel, which also is placed behind the location of the original one. The underside of the original had to be strengthened because of the jet engine. The rest is OOB, apart from some invisible extra detailing in the wheel bays... I kept the weathering to a minimum, since this aircraft seemed to have been rather well maintained. A few years after the delivery, it was stripped from colour - but this scheme was more interesting than a simple bare metal finish. A last picture. I hope you like this rare-seen Lanc!

  5. My 1/72 Airfix Dambuster. Like the engineering on this kit although I had alot of fit issues- think it was me being fat fingered and not the kit. Annoying that despite the gloss coat some decals did silver....again me rushing this and not the kit. This build for girlfriend who is a massive Lancaster/ WW2 aviation fan.
  6. Hi everyone, Finalising my February releases (all 1/72), some of which will be on sale at the Huddersfield show. Those marked with an * may be ready a bit late for the show, but will be listed on website once in stock; - Lancaster 'Blockbuster' bomb set - Lancaster bulged bomb bay doors - Hurricane Fabric wing 20mm underwing cannon set - Hurricane five spoke wheels (for Airfix fabric wing kit) - Sea Harrier FA.2 fuselage pylons and AMRAAM missiles* - Harrier GR.9 TERMA pod* - Harrier GR.3 Blue Eric modified gun pod (collaboration with Combat Decals) - Hawker Hunter P.1109A conversion/decals (collaboration with Airdecal re-print) All above items are for Airfix kits, except P.1109A that goes with Revell base kit. Thanks Colin

  8. So after a break of a few months I decided to break the funk and complete something out of the extensive stash I have going. So here's the (at the time I started) new Airfix 1:72 Lancaster 'Operation Chastise' I know I've made a few schoolboy errors on it (the walkway transfers being the wrong way around) and the rather sub standard finish on it. Few thoughts on the Kit, compared to the old Lanc (which is also on the bench) it's a complete breath of fresh air and it's nice to have some detail on the kit other than the bog standard seat on a block of plastic and the windows on the side to be actual windows and not just marked out. The interior is up there with the Revell 1:72 bombers in terms of what you put in (their Halifax is also on the bench) and the fit is perfect bar a slight gap in the nose. Sorry about the poor lighting, that's what happens when you finish it at 10pm. I'll post some better ones up tomorrow. cheers
  9. Here are some pictures of my completed 1/72 scale Lancaster's. They have both been somewhat modified; the work in progress can be found here: '>1/72 Lancasters - Revell and Airfix - simultaneous builds Hope you like them, thanks for looking! Karl
  10. Hi Chaps, I fancied adding a Lancaster to my collection of builds, so I'm going to attempt to simultaneously build two; an Airfix B.III Special 'Dambusters' Lancaster as ED932 AJ@G and a Revell B.I I'm going to convert in to the BBMF Lancaster PA474 I'm going to try and modernise the Airfix fit a bit by adding some scratch built interior detail based on the Revell kit plus come corrections to the upkeep mine and other details appropriate for this aircraft. The Revell kit, whilst being more modern and better detailed also has some fairly well documented errors. I'll be trying to correct these as best as I can whilst thinking about how the kit differs from a standard B.I with me wanting to represent the BBMF Lancaster, including the Avro Lincoln rudders and undercarriage, Shackleton Mk.II wheels and the Airbus A340 tail wheel. Whilst I'm going to attempt to get them 'right' I'm sure I'll make some mistakes along the way with something, so apologies in advance. These are the two kits I'll be using: I'll be using the kit's own decals where I can, plus others from the spares box. The roundels for the Airfix kit were out of register, a replacement set were kindly supplied by Airfix spares department, however with the kit being very old the first replacements were just as bad as mine, so they substituted them with a set of BBMF decals where I'll just be using the roundels. Wish me luck! Karl
  11. Here is my latest and greatest , Airfix's new Lancaster in Dambuster mode. I added plenty of etch , Airwaves resin engine and scratch built the rear fuselage interior It's not quite complete as I intend to weather it a bit more when I put it into a airfield diorama using the new airfield support set, but that will be some time off so enjoy for now...
  12. In 1951 Sweden bought one Lancaster to use as a testbed for Swedish jet engines. The Aircraft was designated Tp 80 and flew lots of test flights until it was sadly lost in a crash in 1956. The model is Revell's using a conversion set from Polish company Top Gun. This set is far from Aires or Eduard standards, so using it meant lots of sanding and filler. I also decided to show one of the Merlins, that got some extra detailing.
  13. Lancaster B.II - Etch & Canopy Masks for the Airfix Kit Eduard 1:72 With the release last year of the excellent B.II radial engine Lancaster from Airfix, Eduard have come up trumps with some improvement accessories to improve both the exterior and interior of the kit. Four sets are being reviewed here, exterior, interior, dedicated flap replacements and the budget Zoom set that focusses on the cockpit interior. Also included is the canopy mask set which for me at least is as integral to model building as glue and paint these days! Lancaster B.II Landing Flaps (Set 72578) Whilst the Airfix kit is already blessed with an open flap option, the limitations of injection moulding mean that there is some scope for improvement in terms of scale finesse. This comprehensive set from Eduard provides that solution. Obviously, to use this set, filing of the existing detail is necessary as well as levelling the surface to apply the etch to. Some plastic or brass rod of 0.8mm and 0.3mm diameter is also required in the instructions but not supplied. As the flaps are the same as the B.I/III, there is no reason why they can't be used on the other Airfix Lancaster variants too. More information can be seen in the online instructions provided by Eduard - HERE Lancaster B.II Exterior (Set 72566) The exterior gets a well thought out selection of improvements. The landing gear bays and doors get some intricate additions and both the main and tail wheel legs are treated to the etch touch including brake lines. The radial engines in the Airfix kit are a little lacking in detail in my opinion, so the attention of them is well deserved. They are routed from the rear of the cylinders. I've seen pictures of some framework in front of the Hercules engines on the Halifax that WEM have in their B.III etch set, however I'm not sure whether this was also present on the Lancaster B.II. Some other improvements include the upper fuselage escape hatches, trim tab control rods and oil cooler mesh faces. For more information, see HERE Lancaster B.II Interior (Set 73492) Again, Eduard have found some creative ways to add detail where it matters, this time inside the aircraft. The cockpit area gets a complete makeover, with a highly detailed pilots seat and wealth of controls and panels that are on show under that greenhouse! This attention to detail goes back into the navigators and wireless operators area too. Further areas of focus include the bomb aimers location with more panels and some enhancements to the front and rear turrets. The panels are provided on pre-painted self adhesive etch to aid assembly into the aircraft. Some kit detail will need to be removed from the surfaces before assembly of these parts. for more information, see HERE Lancaster B.II Interior Zoom (Set SS492) The zoom set is a budget alternative to the interior set above. It provides the pre-painted self adhesive etch fret shown above hence primarily focusses on the panels inside the cockpit and bomb aimer locations including throttle quadrants. For more information, see HERE Lancaster B.II Flexible Paint Masks (CX372) If you hate masking like I do, you will welcome this set, especially given the wealth of clear parts on the Lancaster. Two sheets of pre-cut parts are provided in the pack and include wheel masks too. As the transparencies on the B.II are common with the B.I/III, they can be used on any of the airfix kits. Conclusion There is no doubt that Airfix have released a great kit in its own right, however these sets do allow you to take it to another level by utilising the benefits that etch can provide over the injection moulded parts. Obviously, some of the parts and the preparation needed to fit them requires a higher skill level, but if you are a fan of the B.II, then they are certainly something to consider when you build one. 14. Hello, I've just added the Harrier TERMA pod, Lancaster Blockbuster and limited re-print RAE P.1109A sets on my website, available to order now. All are 1/72; Thanks Colin http://www.freightdogmodels.co.uk
  15. Hello, This one has been on the drawing board since completing the Airfix Version back in January, hopefully I'll not have as many problems with this one as I am currently having with the "Mustang/Tornado/Gannet", so should be moving fairly quickly. I'm going to be doing this in the scheme of AJ-G which was flown by Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC DSO* DFC*, and using Humbrol 29 Dark Earth & Tamiya TS-2/XF=61 for the Dark Green sections, the black underside & engine block will be finished in Plastikote Flat Black. Box and Sprue Shot's: Not had a chance to take any photo's but I've now sprayed the Flat black area's on the aircraft, as the kit was rather Glossy: Thanks for Looking
  16. Finally got this done. This is the first Hasegawa Lanc I've built, and on the whole, it's pretty good. The landing gear design is a bit naff with a separate parts joining the two main legs which kept breaking throughout the build and the canopy needed the escape panel moving. Built using the CMK surfaces set which gives ailerons, flaps and complete tail feathers with separate parts and the Pavla replacement radiator intakes. The squadron codes are a bit low, and also a little small in height looking at photographs. It was painted using Gunze dark earth lightened with white and Tamiya XF81 dark green also lightened with white. The under surfaces were predominantly Tamiya sky grey with a bit of blue grey and white mixed in. The build thread is here Thanks to Chrisrope for donating a tail wheel from an airfix kit as the Hasegawa one is far too big, cheers mate It represents PD131 serving with 15 Sqn in 1946. This aircraft formerly served with 617Sqn. Anyway, hope you like it. Thanks for looking, Neil
  17. Finally got round to starting this after picking it up at one of the shows this year for £29. So, the plan... To do one of the day schemes as a change! CMK surfaces set (ordered) - use the flaps lowered and possibly the tail parts slightly off neutral. Pavla larger intakes if they are correct for this aircraft????? Eduard zoom set for cockpit Correct the escape hatch position on the canopy and use Eduard masks As well as the questions I've posted in the WWII section, got some questions for those that have built the Hase kit... Has anyone used the CMK control surfaces set - if so, any advice? Anything to watch out for the Hase kit in general? Have you fitted the wings after painting or before? Quite fancy fitting the wings at the end to ease access. Shrouded / unshrouded exhausts? Treaded or untreaded tyres? Here's where I'm up to so far. Made some seatbelts and arm rests for the pilots seat, strangely, the Eduard Zoom set doesn't have the seatbelts included. Also filled the side windows which were omitted on later aircraft. A few need a bit more filling to hide them. Cheers
  18. Ladies and gentlemen, the Lancaster has been finished and has got it's deserved place in the cabinet! I would like to thank all the people who helped me with this project, by posting pics or sharing their knowledge on this subject! The pictures are maybe a bit red-brownish, the cam had some problems with the white balance (though manual...strange!), and maybe not 100% corrected. Thanks for watching! Alex
  19. Below please find a photograph of a Lancaster GR.3 I'm trying to reproduce. It's still some time before I get to the painting stage (I've got the wings on the fuselage, but the fuselage still needs some work - I know, I should have waited until the fuselage was done before attaching the wings, but I couldn't wait!). However, it's never too early to think about how I'm going to reproduce this wonderfully-filthy machine. I have my questions and comments added to this picture and I would definitely like anyone else's input regarding this. The overall scheme is simple - just the typical postwar maritime scheme of Medium Sea Grey over White. It's the dark areas that confuse me - exhaust stains, deliberately painted black, or the white overcoat worn away to show the black paint from the original Bomber Command scheme (I assume they just painted over that scheme, instead of stripping it off, then repainting it - those postwar years were somewhat austere). Thank you very much in advance for any help! Best Regards, Jason
  20. Hong Kong Models 1:32 Avro Lancaster MKIII, Catalog # 01E06 My first posting so hope it is of interest to some and in the right place! Here in the USA, Internet Hobbies has the big Lanc on site for advance order at 285 USD with delivery date of November 2013...http://www.internethobbies.com/hkmo1avlamki.html I checked with them and they confirmed the November date. They estimate 15 USD for shipping to me in MA (based on shipping cost of the HK 1:32 B17). I am thinking to recreate the BBMF in 1:32, probably not an original idea, but I visited the flight's hangar in Coningsby in August and it was just so inspiring! With HK Models I found the Lanc - now I need to find some decent spits and hurris in 1:32. The Sptfire PR XIX will be a challenge!
  21. Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone knows of 1/72 scale decals and a conversion set for Canadian Avro Lancaster KB976 in MK10 AR condition as delivered to Lynn Garrison in 1964 or in her final transatlantic flight condition to Strathallan in 1975. I'd be looking at using Airfix's excellent new tool BI / BIII as the basis for the model.
  22. Good afternoon, as mentionned in another thread, I started to build the nice Lancaster from Revell. I will paint it in a nice grey/white marine reconnaissance version, and use the Eduard Exteriour set, along with their masks and some resin wheels. I started to fill all the windows. The last two will be replaced anyway with some clear plastic from a CD box, in order to get the two large observation windows. After a layer of tamiya putty and some mr. surfacer, I sanded it down. Next were the Merlins, which are made of 6 parts each. They look OK, but still need some cables, these&that to look more realistic. Actually, I don't know yet if I should display them on the lancaster or put them in the spare box. Any suggestion? The first PE-parts fit well to the revell parts. Here it adds some more structure to the wheel well. A rough idea how it looks in the wing. In the other thread, I learnt that the colour of the post-war wheel wells was still black, can anyone confirm that? Oh, by the way, I don't stick to the instructions, mainly because I hate cleaning my airbrush. So, I will start with all the interiour green parts, and then continue to the black parts... Alex
  23. This is the re-issue of the Tamiya 1/48 Lancaster with new markings and the option of the FN-82 rear turret allowing you to build this version; TW880, No.35 Squadron, Lancaster B Mk.I (FE). As I understand it, Lancasters serving in the Far East were painted white to keep the air frames cooler in the hot climate and to improve paint durability. (but I could be wrong). No comments on the build it was the same as it was 20+ years ago. The white is a mix of white, flat earth & grey, the night black is Semi-gloss black and a little hull red. Tamiya "AS" lacquer paints decanted and airbushed.
  24. Resin Avro Lancaster Propellers 1:72 Pavla for the New Airfix Kit It's no surprise that with the new Airfix Lancaster in the shops, there would be aftermarket interest in improving what is already a great kit. More importantly, there's probable little complaining too, being such a popular subject. Pavla have recently released some replacement propellers to take care of both needle and paddle type units fitted to the Mk.I/III aircraft. Both sets come with complete hub units and separate prop blades that locate into the hub recesses. Moulded in light grey resin, they are fine replacements should you choose this route. A razor saw will be necessary to remove the hubs from the backing block U72-147 The paddle blade props have a noticeably wider chord than the parts supplied in the kit. Comparing photographs of the real thing, they appear to be more accurate in this respect. The thickness of the blades is slightly thinner than the kit parts too giving a more scale accurate look. There are a few air bubbles present in some of the blades as you may be able to see from the pictures, however they are very small and easily dealt with. U72-146 The needle blade props look very similar in chord profile to the kit parts, but again benefit from being thinner in thickness. A benefit of using these is the lack of sprue connections to carefully cut / file off and slight flash found on the kit parts. Conclusion For a subtle improvement, these sets will be handy. A blade setting tool would of been a useful addition to assist in getting the blades positioned correctly. The paddle set offers greater value in terms of giving a more accurate chord on the blades. 25. Bomber Command Museum of Canada. On September 20th they did a four engine night run on their Lancaster. Guaranteed goosebumps! Quite surreal as it is next to a main road with cars & trucks going past. If this doesn't stir you, you have no soul. And if you've never been to East Kirkby to see 'Jane', I can thoroughly recommend it as modelling therapy. Pete
