  1. Just getting started on my next project. Having done exclusively WWII subjects for the past several years, I thought I'd try out a well-regarded kit of the plane that got me interested in aviation in the first place (via Top Gun, naturally). The kit is usual top grade from Tamiya, and the office goes together with their usual puzzle like engineering and fit. Here it is, finished up for now, still awaiting seats and crew. I think a little modification is in order, because I've decided I'll be building this bird wheels up. Stay tuned in the coming weeks to see if my idea for an in flight display comes to fruition...
  2. This build was cursed. That is all. Problems were mostly caused by my own clumsiness, not the GWH kit, which in terms of fit and surface detail is fantastic. Dropped the model, breaking a stabiliser and meaning I had to redo the first camo colour during the large-scale masking work… then a gear leg snapped and I had to drill the stumps out and brass rod repair job the thing, the AK colours I used for the first time on this kit didn’t react well to Mr Leveling Thinner, separating during spraying so that each cup sprayed different shades which meant my usual shading technique was impossible. The GWH Decals are almost completely useless due to being extremely thick and with a matt finish that makes them almost impossible to blend into paintwork, even with Agama Hypersol. As a result, I bought some aftermarket decals and made this colourful (for an F-15C anyway) US Air Force 1st Fighter Wing bird stationed at Langley AFB in 2004. This particular aircraft was the the personal mount of (then) Commander Frank Gorenc, who went on to become a four star general and commanded US Air Forces Europe and Africa. When spraying a layer of varnish to protect the decals, however, the real disaster occurred. I refilled the airbrush cup and forgot to put the lid back on, meaning that I splashed a large dollop of Mr Super Clear III on the left wing, which immediately dissolved the existing varnish, decals and paint layers. Much cursing and fixing required before I could get back to weathering. Even once nearly done the resin engine replacements kept falling off due to miniscule glueing area, the canopy was dirty and fogged inside when masks came off so I had to cut/lever it off to fix, and the pylons were a job and a half to get settled in place. All in all much more work than it needed to be but I think the result is ok.
  3. Sukhoi 17th in 48th scale out of Smer's box. Enjoy!
  4. Hi all, So with some home renovations this year, I got nothing built in the first 6 months as the kits were packed away. But I managed to build some kits in the second half of the year, got to Telford, met some of you good people in person so not a bad year all considered! All are brushpainted and any questions, just shout. Revell 1/72 F-16 MLU Tigermeet, OOB build. Decals were a bear but worth it in the end. Airfix 1/72 Spitfire backdated to the prototype. Still not convinced by that colour, so much so that I don't really post pictures of it! Italeri 1/72 Bell UH-1D for the Huey STGB here on Britmodeller. Revell 1/52 Star Wars Snowspeeder with some mods for a 'Battle of Hoth' diorama And final one, a Hasegawa 1/72 F-18A Hornet for a 'Call of Nature' GB elsewhere. Thanks for looking, hope 2017 brings you health, happiness and plenty of good modelling. Regards from sunny Ireland. Dermot
  5. Well Guys! We made it!!! When: 2nd Jan 2016 to 24th April 2016 Hosts: Shermaniac and Col. How about 'Made in Britain GB' so: British Designed and/or built and Used by Britain British Designed and/or built and Used by Others (Saudi Lightnings, Danish/Swedish/Israeli Centurions, Kuwaiti Saladins, Swiss Hunters etc) So, no Phantom's or C130's just proper British made goodies The Jaguar (Car), TSR2, Vulcan, Churchill, Centurion, Chieftain, Sopwith Camel, WWI Tank - see what I mean....... This can encompass Cold War Jets and AFV's from then as well as anything from the year 'dot' right up to now Experimental subjects: Any of these elements will need to be supported by archive pictures (not drawings or CAD) Just seen the TV prog Cold War, Hot Jets and it seemed that we, the Brits, had the world in our hands then someone sold us out so! With the advent of Britain being the technology leaders of that time we should have a GB around this subject. Happy to Host but would like an 'Experienced' personage to co-host We're there guys and this is for 2016 - thanks for your support: Exclusions: Anything which us not factual by nature. This will also apply to 'paper projects' which never achieved at least an experimental working prototype. I'm also going to put What-if's into this statement as well. There are more than enough possible subjects which can be covered within the base parameters. Current volunteer list is, as follows: Shermaniac (Moderator) Col. 6. Airbus A319 I completed a month ago. Not perfect, but getting better. I'm currently building the same kit again in a personalised livery (will post on here when done, if it succeeds) Goes together relatively easily. On my second time round i'll be paying more attention to the join lines on the engines. If you go for the CM56 option, i've noticed the starboard engine on both kits didn't fit together. The IVAE engines (pictured) seem to fit consistently. Chris
  7. All in all a nice, easy build. There are a few amateur tell tale signs (like that big paint smudge on the fin insignia) I need to neaten up. But by my standards this is pretty good, and overall i'm very happy with this Chris x
  8. Out of box Italeri 1:72 scale kit. Hope you enjoy
  9. Next one! HB kit with TwoBobs decals. 1:48 scale. Enjoy!
  10. Hello, In between bursts of enthusiasm for my ongoing 1/24 Tiffie build I've scaled right down and been gradually working on the very fine 1/72nd Academy Crusader. I've always liked this US jet, building the old Hasegawa version many many years back and trying/failing to do something decent with the Esci 48th version a while ago. In this scale I can afford to visit the aftermarket, and have added Eduard's Zoom, Quickboost slats (with Flaps to follow) and intakes. I've read that the slats set is too short - we'll see, they certainly have finer edges than the kit parts, which itself is beautifully moulded with very fine panel lines and riveting, which I'll do my best not to foul up! You'll see I started work before taking this pic - Eduard didn't send me a used fret! ll be building it wing up, flaps down, probably with one of the kit decal schemes for two US Marines users. As this has been a slow burner build, I'm presenting quite a lot in this first post, including the cockpit with the pre-coloured etch adding lots of detail that while I know others can replicate themselves, I know my limits! That ejector seat pull is lovely but fragile, it's pinged off twice know, but is now kept in a very safe place. Strangely Eduard only printed the yellow and black on the topside, so some very careful paintwork will be needed below, as it will be visible. Wheelbay and speedbrake inserts, excellent moulding here painted with Tamiya pure white spray can and some washes of grime: The closed up fuselage happens early on, with the various sub-assemblies dropping easily into place: The cockpit in place, with a little scratchbuilding for the gunsight and shroud - spare etch and kitchen foil... Very unforgiving in close up, this scale - dust issues in the black paint I think... The hollowed-out Quickboost replacement intakes - nothing wrong with the kit ones other than no openings, but very fiddly job to open them. So, that's pretty much up to date on this build. This is a very clean and crisp kit to build, so I'm hoping I can show more progress soon. Welcome all your constructive comments, Take care, Matt
  11. An idea I have for a Vietnam air base diorama is to have more than one aircraft type near to each other. Problem I have is that I don't know whether one would have found two or more different types of aircraft, for example: F-4; A-7, A-4, F-100D, F-104 etc., adjacent or close enough to each other to fit on a diorama. In order to build something, that would fit on a suitable sized base, I would be building 1:144 scale aircraft I've trawled the web and found photo's of all the above aircraft but they appear to show just one type in their own revetments/squadron lines. So a line of phantoms or Voodoo's etc. but I've not seen a mix. Anyone have any definitive information that shows more than one type close by on an air base? cheers Mike
  12. Hi guys, I'm looking to get some 1:24 modern jets to go with my 1:24 Sea Harrier....and I was wondering if any existed? (apart from the Gr.3). Cheers! JG
