  1. Hello, Here's my just finished 1/48 Hawker Typhoon Ib. It's the Italeri rebox of the Hasegawa kit. The Hasegawa kit is not without its issues, mostly around the cockpit, but Italeri added a whole bunch of more trouble. For some reason they included the 3 bladed prop only, while all the decal options are for 4 bladed ones, as far as I could find. The same goes for the horizontal tail surfaces, only one type is included, although I haven't researched if these are the original ones or the later Tempest type. Therefore they might be incorrect for my build. Other problems were the exhausts, and no mention about what to do with the landing lights in the wing leading edges. I had some problems finding good pics of the combination of 3 bladed prop with later canopy, but @KoenL and his 2 ATAF books helped me out. I settled on MM963, ZY-W of 247 Squadron flown by Flt.SGt. J.A.D Meechan at B.6 Coulombs some time after D-Day. The camouflage was done with Humbrol paints,, the invasion stripes are Tamiya, the markings and roundels etc were all done with Colourcoats using Maketar masks. The serials are cobbled together from a Spitfire sheet by Flevodecal. The exhausts are from Eduard. I'm glad it's finally finished. Thanks for looking, I hope you like it.

A useful reference from the book 'With the carriers in Korea’ by John Lansdown' about the black and white identification stripes that Sea Furies and Fireflies had painted on their Wings and fuselage. Chapter Nine, HMS Ocean 5 May - 8 Nov 1952. Page 279: 'both squadrons (this would be 802 with Sea Furies and 825 with Fairey Fireflys) eliminated the black and white identification stripes on wings and fuselages of all the aircraft, an Admiralty instruction that had been issued so that enemy MiGs would have more difficulty seeing them'. The instruction was issued on or about 21 Aug 1952. Cheers,
  3. Has anyone seen any pics of Hawker Hurricanes with D-Day invasion stripes on them? Any links welcome.
  4. IIRC the identification stripes (four 12" black and three 24" white ones) on Typhoon wing undersurfaces were introduced in December 1942 and ordered to be removed in February 1944. What's funny they were also introduced on production Tempests (after all Hawker called the Tempest briefly Typhoon II) and the first units flying Tempest from April 1944 (No 3 and 486 Sq.) didn't feel obliged to remove the ID stripes, as the order listed only Typhoon Thus some (not many) Tempests from these two squadrons mentioned above featured in June 1944 "mixed striping", having D-day stripes (three white and two black ones, 18" each) on wing uppersurfaces and around the fuselage while retaining old ID stripes under the wings. Frankly speaking I have not seen any photos of such a/c, but several colour profiles of them do exist (by various artists), namely the JN766 SA@N and JN803 SA@D of No 486 Sq. and JV784 JF@E of No 3 Sq. RAF. Moreover during my 50+ years of interest in aviation I have also met the profiles of late production (Tempest-tail, teardrop canopy) Typhoons featuring old ID striping under the wings and the remnants of AAEF invasion stripes under the fuselage. Examples are two a/c from No 198 Sq. (RB222 TP@F and TP@Q with unknown serial - both with 4-bladed props) as well as the 3-bladed JP811 MR@K of No 245 Sq. Also the MN570 (big tail, 3-blades) coded @B after W/Cdr Peter Brooker of 123rd Wing is sometimes shown with full AAEF stripes around the fuselage and over the wings plus old ID stripes on the wing undersurfaces. Could anybody confirm these oddities with any photos? The 4-bladed, large-tailed Typhoon with "mixed" stripes is what I need Cheers Michael
  5. Evening, Final bits n pieces fitted this afternoon, and I'm calling this done. Built straight out the box, decals and all. Only additions were some tape seat belts, oh and I cheated on the canopy masking with an Eduard set. Flory models panel line wash and weathered further with pastels. I have already noticed a couple of omissions, the gear doors are a tad too clean. Given their location aft of the the lower side of the engine, I suspect these would be far from clean! I have left the wire antenna off just now as the mast had not set when I took the pics. Lessons learnt.......again, must fit, blend and polish the nav lights way before we get to the painting stage! Fortunately the fit wasn't too bad but it's still really noticeable that these have been fitted at the end. Anyway here's a few pics taken in the sun this afternoon, yes, sun again, no snow today just hail earlier!   6. Hi Folks, I bought this kit on an alcohol fueled ebay trip some time ago, BEFORE reading any reviews, which gave the impression that it was a swine to put-together. I'm glad to report that it wasn't as bad an experience as I expected, the worst being the two-part lower engine cowling and I think the air intake is wrong but that might be me as I hacked off the locating pin before fitting, the wingtips were not a good fit either, but hey, you pays yer money and all that...... Paint is Vallejo model air upper; Dark sea grey 048(now engine grey for dome reason) and Dark Green 012. A bit on the dark side I know Underside is Tamiya MSG Interior is a mix of VMA Zins chromate and VMA int.green and various bits. Wanted to give it a 'lived-in' look without going overboard on the weathering. On the whole I'm quite pleased.......but feel free to comment !!!! Cheers PS: Excuse the IKEA place mat
  7. Howdy all. Hopefully you will not mind someone from over the pond joining you in this build. I plan to make one of Eduard's little gems in the form of Mk.IXe, MK329, flown by W/Cdr J. E. Johnson, CO of No. 144 Wing, June, 1944. Yes this is the one from the Eduard Royal Class with the beer kegs, who does not like the idea of inflight beverages! I will be using the Mk.IXe over-trees, with bits from the royal class box as needed. I like this one, and it will be my second spitfire with invasion stripes. The first one was...,not good, so hopefully I am a little more experienced. I have already built one in Czech markings from the Eduard "Boys are Back' edition and it went together wonderfully, so I do not see any problems. I am sure everyone is aware of this kit, as a few others are building them, so forgive me for not posting shots of the sprue trees. More photos of the build to follow. Thanks.

  9. Hi all, unwilling to learn I will start two builds in this GB. First is the Tamiya P-47D with Zotz decals. Otherwise OOB. So chances are good this shake-and-bake will be finished in time: The other build will be Eduard Typhoon with Alley Cat resin enhancements. And although I am not sure I can finish it in time I just have to enter a british subject... Rene
  10. Kit: Tamiya 61047 Paint: Camouflage - Xtracolour enamels. Invasion stripes, ID stripes, interior, tyres – Tamiya acrylics. Pylons, wheel hubs, undercarriage legs and wheel bays – Alclad lacquer. Decals: Microscale 48-139 Extras: Ultracast resin exhausts, Eduard Zoom set. Vac-form ‘Malcolm’ canopy. North American P-51B Mustang Assigned to: Maj. Howard ‘Deacon’ Hively 334th FS, 4th FG, US 8th Air Force Debden, June 1944 * * Lost count of how many Tamiya P-51’s I’ve built over the years, but what I do know is that this is easily my best. Took just over a month from start to finish, just grabbing an hour or two bench-time here and there. Particularly pleasing on this build is that I deliberately tried to replicate the ‘hasty’ application of the invasion stripes. Really difficult to pull-off without the project ending-up looking like a badly painted and rushed model. I think I’ve done it – no two stripes are the prescribed 18” scale width, they aren’t straight and a little patchy in ‘depth’. You can see from the accompanying photo ‘The Deacon’ was heavily paint chipped and dirty, again, an effect I’ve tried to replicate. Really enjoyed this (hassle free) project and very happy with the end result. As ever thanks for taking the time to look, and happy to answer any questions, comments and criticism. AFN Ian
