  1. Hi folks, sorry but another of my hurricanes! it is a mk2 but with guns and "bumps" removed finished as a mk1 thanks for looking.
  2. Greetings All! Discovered this site recently and have a few queries. I've always been enamored with the Hawker Hurricane and after some research, it turns out a relative was actually a Hurricane pilot in the Battle of Britain! Though he was a Sergeant and certainly not an Ace, I'd like to honor his memory. I'm in the process of building his two Hurricanes and need some information. Here's what I know: Pilot - Albert Thomas Gooderham, RAF service # 742957 (Sergeant) Mounts - 46 Squadron (post Norway) Hurricane MK 1, serial V6789 shot down over the Thames Estuary 15 OCT 40 (survived) 615 Squadron Hurricane MK IIc, serial Z3841 shot down over Thames Estuary/Channel 02 NOV 41 (KIA) ATTENTION HURRICANE KNOWLEDGE GURUS! I know 46 squadron markings were "PO" during that time, anyone know which letter identifier V6789 carried? or if it was an "A" or "B" color scheme? I'm assuming it was Dark Earth, Green, Sky combo with possibly a black half wing scheme (?) please help. I know 615 markings were "KW" but by NOV 1941 may not have had squadron codes applied. Any ideas on what Hurricane Z3841 would have looked like on that day in November 1941. Any help, direction to historical websites, photos, or general knowledge would be MUCH appreciated! Cordially, SFC John Gooderham
  3. Hi folks,I recently "scrounged" some Hurricane decals from fellow member Steven who very kindly sent me the airfix mk1 as well as the decals,so I thought it would be nice to try and do it some justice from spare parts I have. I am thinking of building it with the canopy/door open replacing the prop, and adding some basic detail to the interior/wheel wells etc. thanks Steve.
  4. Brush painted in Revell acrylics with a top coat of Tamiya satin varnish, pastels were used for the weathering. Markings are fictional for a night fighter but I wasn't about to spend £10 for decals on a £3 kit.
  5. So after a few days I can finally say I've completed a model this year, or 3. All 3 in "flight" Apologies for the harsh light, it is our guaranteed "1 day of summer" 'oop North. P40 first, the right wing has let me down by flaking a bit. Luckily I can just shrug and say "Well they weren't bothered about keeping them clean" Side view, I couldn't decide how best to do the whitewash look. I thought about the hairspray method but after the "success" with Humbrol's black weathering powder/decalfix solution I though the white would work better. Spitfire I made a pigs ear of the props. Hurricane. And finally what I call the "Himmel" look, as that's what a German would think seeing this bearing down (and they were in a Commando comic) Final thoughts, my first few after returning to aircraft, and smaller scales. These were really an experiment to see what the weathering powders were capable of and also my first attempt to really "batter" an aircraft beyond running a brush around vents and putting a bit silver around the wings.
  6. Not wanting to do much today I decided to take a look at the Airfix club kits. While looking through the Hurricane bits started coming together and I ended up doing the whole thing in one sitting. It also gave me the chance to play with the new Humbrol weathering powders. I've put it on quite thick but I figured the Russians in 1942 didn't have much time to worry about cleaning their aircraft. The Kit went together with absolutely no problems and the powder is great to work with, although you may finish your model looking like you've spent a shift in a mine. Off to put the Spit and Tomahawk together and buy a pot of the white powder (um....)
  7. Hi All, David Aiken posted a link on the Hyperscale Plane Talking Forum about the Finnish Wartime Photograph Archive it is well worth visiting, the images further below are some of what I found following ten minutes of putting in search terms on their website. Please note however that you need to use Finnish terms since English will not work although manufacturers names like Brewster, Fiat, Fokker Focke, Gloster and Morane for example bring up some results while Hawker does not. It is also worth noting that these images at least the ones I have seen are around 4900 pixels across one side are also watermarked and are only 8 bit sRGB jpg files. If you are after better quality files lest watermarks contact details are provided for the archive. To start people off I suggest the following search terms will bring up some worthwhile results; Suulajärvi, tyyppisiä, hävittäjiä, Suomalainen, syöksypommittajia & Lentolaivueen amongst others. The following images are all worthy of a seperate discussion in their own right however to help get them out here quickly I have posted them without any explanatory captioning so please enjoy as have I. All images SA-kuva. Cheers, Daniel. More images to follow.....
  8. Hi. Here is my attempt at these excellent kits I got for a few pounds. Please let me know what you think. Thanks Ian
  9. I am busy with a couple of Hurricane builds as some of you may know. I did get some advice on letter when I asked about it in my post on RAF Lettering LE-D. I am trying to track down a set of decals or masks or something I can make a mask from for Ginger's Hurricane. I did download some Tiff images (as suggested) But I do not have a clue of what size to use. I also not from some photos that the "S" is very square and that the letting looks quiete large when compared to the roundel on the fuselage. I am re-reading "Ginger Lacey - Fighter Pilot". I know that Ginger went through a number of Hurricanes during the BOB. Any help and advice as always would be much appreciated. Thanks
  10. Here she is, finished over two months, which puts me on target to complete 6 models this year.... There are some things I'm not happy with, but rather than correct them I am going to make sure I overcome them in the next build, whatever that might be........
  11. Its finished! I haven't posted much during the later stages of painting because it was pretty standard fair - Klear, weathering, klear, decals, klear, matt varnish, last bits of weathering. Original build thread here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234934871-132-revell-hurricane-iic-5-sqn-burma-1944-45/ The only construction elements were adding the undercarriage legs and wheels, although that was not simple nor straightforward as the modifications needed to fit with the GMF Resin wheelbays meant a lot of realigning, detaching the doors from the legs, rebuilding the extra door panels and general alignment issues. I also manage to break off the pilots step two or three times and had to eventually rebuild it as the hoop got swallowed by the carpet monster. Since taking these photos I've realised I've forgotten to attach the pilot's rer-view mirror and the pilot tube under the wing doh! Anyway here are the photos of the completed diorama... I'm very happy to have finished but somewhat frustrated that there are still numerous faults with the model. The vast majority of these come down to the awful Revell kit. This really is a bad kit and IMHO if you own it, use it as landfill as its nothing but junk! The GMF additions help, but generate their own issues, not least with the interaction between the Mk II nose and the cockpit interior. They really need to sort that out. Anyway, here it is - I doubt if it will win any prizes, but its an interesting diorama and I am happy with it for all its shortcomings I know I will definitely produce a better model later in the year when I do the 1:32 Hobbyboss Spitfire Vb trop converted into a Vc trop as would have been used when my Dad was with 81 Sqn in Algeria in 1943! Watch for that one later this year
  12. Hurricane Mk.IIc Kit: Revell Scale: 1:72 Paint: Xtracrylic, Citadel Extras: Tamiya weathering system, Flory dark wash As I'm still breaking into 1:72 following my decision to change from 1:48 I wanted to try a few techniques out so I selected this kit as a test bed. At 1:48 I have nearly always freehand airbrushed my camouflage, so I wanted to see if I could do it at 1:72, also I struggle with Xtrcrylic paints so again this was another test. Everything has sort of worked but there is a hand full of errors of my making so nowhere near the best quality I can produce, but if you dim the lights and squint at it from six feet away it sort of looks acceptable. Thanks for looking
  13. Well started this on Friday afternoon, after picking it up for less than £3 from HobbyCraft. Its the old tool, so I am sure most are aware of the kits shortcomings. I built it OOB as an 87 Sqn bird, the only addition being some Tamiya tape seatbelts, some dials picked out on the IP using cocktail sticks, and a small bit of stretched sprue on top of the tail in order to attach the antenna cable. I will upload better pictures when I can get some taken outside in natural light, but for now, her you all go:
  14. Hi mates, I did a few searches here, but didn't find any topics about this. Has anyone received the 2013 Airfix Club kit, and if so what can you tell us about the Hurricane IIb? Is this the recent IIc kit with alterations (I think the wing needs to be different)? Cheers, Bill
  15. Hi After a long break and some snow I finally stated a Model. The Italeri Hurricane 1/48. I want to do Doglas Bader's 242 Hurricane. The Kit provides for McKnight's LE-A. Has anyone gote any correct lettering for the "D" and the serial number V7467. I bought some clear decal sheets but cant find the correct template or size. Before anyone starts getting technical in inches I come am orginally was broght up on the metrics system I have GIMP so a simple solution would be nice like use "Arial, Bold, Size 18" or anything else i.e. a PDF Thanks Guys
  16. With the January copy of Airfix Modelworld came a calendar. Looking through its obvious that it uses Airfix artwork. I'd like to get my hands on the Hurricane shown for September 2013, but I cannot identify the kit. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
  17. Slowly been building this one and im glad i took my time as i am over the moon with this one. The underside black and white tested me but i managed to get it done well in the end. Lovely kit i have to say and might have to build some more in the future. Scheme i have chosen is an aircraft of No 85 (F) Sqn, RAF, Advanced Air Striking Force, France, 1940. And a little picture of my Hurricane collection all together, Enjoy,
  18. Finished this one today for a group build over on another forum, based around the Lend Lease program. What ive built is the Airfix Hurricane IIc kit but ive used the 3d Kits conversion to convert it in to a IID. Ive also used AML decals to do a nice russain scheme for the model. The kit itself is a lovely kit and just falls together, the only big down side is the small prop. The 3d Kits conversion is nice simple to use and is nicely detailed, i would well recommend it to anyone. The AML decals were lovely to use to. I used humbrol and revell paints through out. Overall it was an easy build and im really happy with the finshed product. Enjoy, Tom
  19. Airfix Improvement Sets – Hurricane, Stirling & Defiant 1:72 Valiant Wings Valiant Wings have brought out a range of 1/72 aftermarket products to improve or convert existing kits. These particular samples are for a selection of Airfix kits. Their range covers vac form, etch and resin upgrades and as their website states, they aim to “offer simple to use modelling solutions to improve or upgrade kits that have been on the market for some time”. Their niche is focussed on those who are venturing into the realm of aftermarket for the first time having gained some experience building kits ‘out of the box’. Having this clear focus behind a product range is quite refreshing. That said, the solutions they have aren’t just restricted to novice builders, they can be used for any level. Additional to what is described below, the instructions that come with the sets is very comprehensive. Apart from very detailed guides on how to use the parts contained, you also get tips on further correction / conversion work required to the kit including additional correction sets on the market as well as references to relevant books that will help in your research. Boulton Paul Defiant – Nose Correction Set for Airfix kit Here is a replacement nose section to replace the very poor kit profile. The nose is moulded as one piece with a separate prop spinner. The parts are formed on a resin back plate, so I recommend the purchase of a razor saw if you don’t already have one to remove the parts. The parts are nicely moulded with no visible bubble holes. Fine surface detail is presents on the nose cone. There is some flash behind the moulded in exhausts, so you will need to trim this off, a modelling knife should do the trick here. Short Stirling Mk.IV Nose Conversion for the airfix kit If you’re wanting to build a Stirling, then there is Hobsons choice, the venerable old Airfix kit. As standard, the kit comes as a Mk.I/III with the front mounted turret, however this conversion allows you to build the Mk.IV Transport / Tug used successfully later in the war. Moulded as a single vac form piece, this makes for the easiest way of upgrading the nose, requiring you to cut the existing nose off the kit 26mm from the front. The instructions also offer guidance on the other modifications to complete a Mk.IV. Hurricane II Improvement Set for the New Tool Airfix Kit Although the new tool kit from Airfix is pretty good, this set improves it in several areas. The kit prop I believe is about 3mm too small in diameter so a replacement is provided. Replacement wheels, carb intake, cannon, underwing pitot tube and two types of exhausts (fishtail and normal) all benefit from the fine detail you can get from resin moulding compared to plastic injection moulding. This set will sharpen up the look of your Mk.II and true to their objective, all parts are direct replacement for the kit parts. Care will need to be taken removing the prop from its support plate as there are thin connections running the full length of two of the blades. A sharp modelling knife will be required to do this. Hurricane I Photo Etch Improvement Set for the Airfix kit This set provides a simple pre-coloured etch set to enhance the Hurricane Mk.I. Primarily designed for the airfix kit, it should fit most kits in the scale too. You get a new panel built up in 3 layers, seatbelts, radiator grill, pitot tube, canopy handles, rear view mirror and control column. This is a great starter set if you’re new to using photo-etch details. I recommend some fine tweezers for handling these parts if you don’t currently have any. Conclusion The range of products offered by Valiant Wings is well thought out. I’ve been daunted by some of the aftermarket sets I’ve had in the past both in terms of skill needed (that I never had !!) and shear number of intricate parts, so I do appreciate a range of products that caters for people who are newcomers into this aspect of modelling. The quality of the parts is good and a selection of respected aftermarket producers such as Eduard and CMR are used to make the parts on behalf of Valiant Wings. Review sample courtesy of
  20. Hi, I am finally back and after a few hectic weeks I got back to the Modelling bench. I had a Tamiya Mk I spit out. However I saw I had 2 Airfix Hurri and that is what I have gone with. So far I have re-scribed the raised panel line on the wings. I compared this to a Hasegawa Kit I have. It seems that there are more panel lines on the Hasegawa Kit. However I did notice that this is a IID wing. Has anyone got a decent sketch/plan of the Pane lines for a metal Mk 1 wing. I have looked through all my books but there is nothong suitable to work from. Thanks Sean
  21. well as far as my modelling year goes anyway. Here in no particular order are the fruits of my 2012. Not as many as I would usually do, as spent a considerable part of the year constructing the man cave, getting married, honeymooning etc etc Anyway onto the models. Trumpeter 1/48 Sea Fury ...and another!!!!! still with the FAA, the Classic Airframes Gannet converted to a T2, just a nightmare build from start to finish Hasegawa 1/48 Hornet and finally, Hasegawa 1/48 Hurricane IIC not quite making it by the end of the year were the airfix 737, (actually may make it as it being painted at the moment) and another Has. Hornet and hurricane. To all and your families, A very Merry Xmas. A big thanks to those that helped me out with various things throughout 2012, heres to a productive 2013 for all Roll on, that Airfix 48 Javelin (and a gannet would be nice too!! Bruce
  22. Just a quick heads up, but I'm currently revisiting my research on a book which I started a few years ago, and lost to a terminal hard drive failure. It covers the stories of Hurricane pilots who were tragically killed flying the type in WW2, in all theatres of operations. Fonthill Media are publishing this in 2014 ( and have taken another title I am writing), and so far the working list covers over 25 pilots. But before I finalise the list, are there any BM members who could suggest any Hurricane pilots that could be included in the final manuscript. Kind Regards Andy
  23. Gday All, I have a Hasegawa Hurricane IV on the bench which I would like to finish as an rocket armed SEAC machine Doing a bit of surfing around the IWM site I came across the below image which raises a few questions as I cannot find any other pics of the machine So, does anyone know the identity of the pictured a/c? also colours, I assume DE/DG/MSG? I think the pic was taken late 44/45 The ID bands and spinner have me interested too, they dont look white in the pics to me but a light grey, or is this just type of film. I do not have my heart set on a particular a/c yet so if someone has better info on another SEAC MkIV, I can be swayed Thanks anyone for any info. I have drawn a blank with the limited Hurricane books I have plus the net Bruce
  24. This is Canadian 5403 wearing the markings of BE505, a 12 gun wing MK IIB restored by Hawker Restorations in Suffolk. Pics mine.
