  1. All complete and I've even managed a photo shoot with my other Sea Vixens too. This is the latest addition to my HMS HERMES Air Group, a Sea Vixen FAW.2 of 893 Sqn in the early 1970s. This is the Xtrakit/MPM model, built almost entirely from the box, but with a selection of various decals, some FROG Red Top missiles and a replacement ejector sea for the pilot. I know this kit has received lots of criticism and that was one of the reasons it has sat in my stash unloved since 2008, but now that it is finished the only thing that really still grates is the length of the tail booms (and if I had known, it would have been an easy fix to lop off a few mm from them). There are other disappointing detail issues, like the nose shape and Observer's window, but I can live with them and with a little care, the kit is certainly not unbuildable. ... and now to compare: with the superb 1/48th Airfix kit; with a FROG kit converted to an FAW.1 using Magna resin (with nose cosmetically extended a few mm) and Model Art decals; with an original FROG kit bought in 1976 when they first appeared (whose wheels disappeared way back in the 1970s!); with a Eastern European FROG repop kit converted to a DH110 Pirate; and finally, all the 1/72 kits together: FredT
  2. Dear Colleagues Before I finish the Flyhawk Hermes (1937) by placing her on her own base, I decided to put her 'in harbour' to do a few photographs. I have assembled odds and ends for the harbour over several years to make an interesting backdrop. I think many of you will agree that Flyhawk make the nicest 1/700 ships if you want a pleasant build with sharp details. What is admirable is Hermes was the first ship in the world designed as an aircraft carrier from the keel up. You can't help thinking that the designers got the overall design right and the lines look in many ways remarkably modern. Hope you like it? Andrew
  3. Hello all This is my first time posting on Britmodller, I have a work in progress Falklands War diorama I aim to have a rear cross section of HMS Hermes deck in 1/72nd, which I have roughly measured out from the ships specifications, I know what Ive got is not even remotely accurate however, since I don't currently have the resources for that 1/72 Aircraft-wise, so far I have: 2 Sea Harrier FRS.1 - 1 Italeri, 1 Airfix 1 Harrier GR.3 - Italeri 2 Wessex HU.5 - 1 Italeri, 1 Matchbox 1 Wessex HAS.3 - Italeri 1 Sea King HAS.5 - Revell 1 Sea King HC.4 - Dragon Figures are from Italeri. My extremely quickly thrown together hangar. RFA Tidepool's Wessex HU.5 In 1/350th, in the background I have Airfix's HMS Illustrious, (very) hastily converted into Invincible with plasticard and Milliput. The water was done with Plaster of Paris. This was thrown together speedily to take part in an Air Cadets wing level modelling competition, I now plan on constructing the section of Hermes from wood as originally planned, rather than cardboard and gaffa tape
