  1. Not satisfied with one fixer-upper opportunity in the form of the 1/48 Trumpeter Wellington IC, I have decided to also plunge in to Trumpeter’s latest and perhaps not so greatest, in the form of the Fairey Fulmar I. This will plug a hole in my collection as the Fulmar had a walk on role in the Battle of Britain, and was a prominent early war mainstay of the Fleet Air Arm. I do have an MPM kit as well, but I haven’t summoned up the courage to get it underway. I will post some shots of the kit contents in due course, but thought I would start by getting what I suspect is the hardest part of the build out of the way first. Photos of the kit have been posted in the Rumourmonger section now for months, and having the kit in my hot little hands confirmed what the photos suggested - the top decking and canopies of the kit have a very flat top with a sharp angle to the sides, rather than having a gentle curve to the top section. The kit also looked rather familiar - it matches the Warpaint 41 - Fairey Fulmar- plans by Ian Huntley very closely, save that the canopies etc have been even more squared off than appears on that plan. The sad state of the canopy has been discussed on the Rumourmonger thread, and compared unfavorably to that in the MPM kit. I did venture to suggest that there might be enough ‘meat’ in the Trumpeter kit parts to allow for some gentle reprofiling to achieve a more rounded appearance. The new kit also has two complete sets of the observer’s greenhouse, one closed up and one as three separate parts, presumably so that it can be displayed with the centre section open (more on that in a moment). This means you can experiment without ruining the kit. So, having opened my big trap on this subject, the greenhouse is where I commenced the build. I used some very good quality wet and dry stuck to a flat surface to rough out the new profile, then did some follow up with wet and dry sanding sticks. I have taken the sanding to a 4000 grit, but won’t polish further until I am nearly ready to instal them and fair them into the fuselage. I used the separate canopy sections, as it’s easier to sand the three sections consistently - the joined up greenhouse has a step at each end of the centre section which would make it more difficult to get the shapes right. To make it easier to follow what I have done, I drew around both the unmodified canopies ends, and the equivalent section of the sanded canopies. To make it a complete comparison, I also did a compare and contrast with the equivalent canopy parts from an MPM/Special Hobby Fulmar. Top line is before and after Trumpeter canopy profiles, bottom line compares the modified Trumpeter parts with the MPM canopy parts. So, there is enough thickness in the Trumpy parts to get a nice rounded profile. It does get quite thin at the shoulders of the curve so care is needed, and of course it doesn’t fix the internal profile. I am going to minimise that problem by attaching new frame ends with an inner profile matching the outer curve, which will make the mismatch less prominent . I also think that it will be possible to get the sliding centre section under the forward greenhouse section with a bit of work. I will trim it down a bit at the base and have already started reducing its overall thickness from the outside. So far, about an hour’s work and a lot easier than widening the undercarriage on the Wimpy! Of course the top decking of the fuselage will also need to be reshaped, and the pilot’s canopy could also benefit with some rounding off, and there are some other infelicities, but we are on our way!

  3. I have just started the Eduard 1/48 Fulmar Mk II for something different, This version comes without the resin of the other various editions put out by other companies. I also have two more versions of the MPM kit sitting in stash to build at some stage. Here is the initial parts of the build including the wheel wells. The fuselage prior to painting. The fuselage after initial coat of SMS British Interior Green. I have added the pre painted PE and will be adding a few scratch built parts to make it look a fraction better prior to weathering the interior. The various interior bits that need to be completed then weathered prior to installation. Of course I still had to make up the interior of the wing light to add the wing light lens and PE.
  4. My latest work. Canopy broke, anyway,i left it the way it is. Any suggestions or criticisms are welcome, Thanks for watching.
  5. Bit of a low mojo year for me. My Hobby Room is now my office, so spending leisure time in there is not high on my agenda (first world problems hey?). Only four completed this year. A Hurricane and a Skua waiting to be sprayed but hopefully they will be in 2021 year book. Here is what was finished though. Hope you enjoy them. Hawker Hurricane I (Trop.) 6. This started out as a supposedly quick build in the last Blitzbuild here on BM, link below All was going swimmingly until I tried to paint the EDSG, something happened with the paint I had, and it started reacting until it looks so bad, I realised I couldn't finish it within the Blitzbuilds 24hours so gave up. However, looking at it has annoyed me so much I've decided to try to rescue it. So I cleaned off the failed EDSG, chucked the tin to avoid it happening again and repainted Much better this time, still lots of blooming masking on that epic canopy but it's a start. Cheers Pat
  7. For this Group Build I am building one of the 806 Naval Air Squadron Fulmars flown by Lt William Barnes one of the top scoring Aces of the Royal Navy. The difficulty with aircraft flown by 806 NAS in 1940 is that the serials were not documented by the pilots but what is known is that Barnes flew 6A / serial unknown. So my model will be without a serial. I have built the Special Hobby kit before, there are plastic, resin and etch replacement parts in the kit and there are a lot of them... Obligatory sprue shots Cockpit progress to date.. No seats in yet, and lots of work with a paint brush still to do... Observers cockpit Hopefully I might get to spend a bit more time working on the cockpits tomorrow and get them close to being finished.... Thanks for looking in..
  8. Finishing two models in two days is something of a record, but that's what has happened so here's my MPM 1/48 Fulmar Mk I. Apart from wanting to build it, one reason it got to the top of the pile was the enormous box and the amount of space it was taking up in the stash! It's from the first release without any etch fret or other add-ons. It is one of the best limited run kits I've built with generally good fit, apart from slightly vague locations for some of the cockpit detail. The exceptions were the leading edge inserts for the gun ports, which needed shimming and filling; the landing light transparency, which I could have done much better; and the pilot's canopy. Short of blowing a new one, the solution was to separate the windscreen and canopy with a razor saw and much trepidation. It worked OK and although the sliding section sits a bit high I'm happy with the result. It's from the box apart from boxing in the landing light aperture, harnesses and a stretched sprue antenna, and is brushed with Humbrol enamels. The Fulmar was one of those endearingly inadequate aircraft which nevertheless played a vital role in the war and I'm pleased to have this one as a companion to my Grand Phoenix Firefly. Thanks for looking!
  9. Pre-Cut Paint Masks for Special Hobby Fulmar Mk.I/II 1:72 Eduard Although masks won't add any extra detail to your models, they will save you a great deal of time and patience when painting your canopies and wheels, as well as provding you with the certainty of a nice, neat finish. Some modellers see them as a luxury - and I wouldn't disagree with that - but they really are a time saver, particularly for kits with complex canopy framework like the Fulmar. 10. At Moson Model Show 2017, Special Hobby will propose its stock of 1/72nd Fairey Fulmar kits: SH72143 Fulmar Mk.I (link) & SH72196 prototype (link) - see box art herebelow. New variants Fulmar Mk.II and NF.Mk.II will be release in June 2017. Source: http://www.modelforum.cz/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=95825&start=2805 V.P.
  11. I am new to this site and wonder if anyone can help with a definitive answer to my query. Many references seem to imply that the defining element of the Fairey Fulmar II are the additional side air inlets, yet evidence from pilots logs and Serial Number Lists show that many of the aircraft delivered and flown as Fulmar IIs did not have the addtional air inlets. I would love to know for certain as I am trying to complete versions of models of Fulmars N4074 and X8812 both of which were flown by my father and both of which were delivered and flown as Fulmar IIs. Special Hobby / Eduard / MPM versions show images of these aircraft but refer to N4074 as a Fulmar I, which it isn't, and this leads me to be uncertain that the appearance of their version of X8812 with the side air inlets is actually correct. Is there a photo reference of X8812 somewhere to settle this, or can anyone confirm for certain that the serial number X8812 did in fact have the side air inlets?

  13. Over the holidays, I was tidying my stash, and discovered a Merlin 1/72 Fulmar purchased in 1991, for £6.95. A product of the early garage-industry limited run injection process, it is molded in a waxy white plastic, with semi-opaque parts that represent the canopies. All surrounded by so much flash that carving the parts to shape is the first thing required, after sawing the parts from the huge sprues. There are decals, but the less said, the better. A good three-view is provided, and it is absolutely necessary if one is to believe this could represent a Fulmar. Easy to understand why it was never started, once the Pegasus version, and then the Vista/Airfix/Smer/Revell appeared. Obviously, this should be one for the bin, but I am possessed occasionally by excited delerium, and in this state of mind I decided to see if anything resembling a model aircraft could be produced. The two fuselage halves do not exactly line up, and the solid wings have a slight bend. The canopies would be useless, except that they are so thick, that inside their form can be discerned something of the original shape. The wings, after hot water treatment and much sanding, were straightened. The fuselage halves were roughly aligned, mating surfaces sanded flat, then glued together. The canopies were sanded extensively to fit their apertures, and lightly glued in place. They were then sanded to match the airframe contours, removed from the model and polished to give a semblance of clarity. Turning to the wings, having decided to try to represent a folded wing Fulmar, each wing was cut into three pieces. The stub wings were pinned with brass rod, and glued in place, as were the horizontal tail and vertical pieces. And that is where we are today. Next up, some scratch built cockpit invention/detail and paint, then re-attachment of the canopies. More to come.........
  14. Hello I am searching infos about the Fulmar mk. I (N4004) of 800X Squadron, shot down by Italian anti-aircraft fire, off Siracusa (Sicily) on the night of October, 8, 1941. The wreck lies on a sandy bottom at about 15 meters depth. I would like to build this aircraft in 1/72 and I need info mainly regarding camouflage pattern and individual code. Thank you for your help Domenico
  15. Hello, I wonder if anyone could give me information on what seems to be the second Fairey Battle or P4/34 prototype K7555. Wiki isn't too helpful. I have a postcard of K7555 left to me by my grandfather. It states Fairey "Battle" Bomber..."Britain Prepared". I would love to model this aircraft, just as it is in the postcard with the canopy open and the pilot looking towards the photographer in mid flight. From the black and white postcard, I may be crazy but it seems the aircraft may be painted overall yellow. Yes, I seem to be able to see yellow in black and white . I may be very wrong.. I have an MPM Battle, but I feel this prototype on the postcard may be closer to the old Airfix/Bilek/SK model than the MPM? Wikipedia does give some information on shape characteristics, but no plans Any information would be really appreciated Best regards and happy modelling Tony
  16. Good Morning all from a particularly soggy Nova Scotia, I have been erring on doing this as a WIP for ages. I initially intended to do this as a quick build along with my Skua and therefore didn't bother with a WIP and didn't take any phots of the initial build. But then whilst I was whittling the wings a touch they just shattered in my hand, fortunately they seemed to shatter along certain convenient panel lines so what could I do with this lay out I wonder? : Jiggle the parts around a bit and hey presto! A WIP is reborn! I am going to skirt around the airframe build and just show what has been done so far, the main crux if the WIP will be the wing fold. First up pics of the cockpit. I have used the Eduard self adhesive etch as an extra. Kit detail is ok in this scale but the etch does add more to it although after a couple of years in the stash they aren't quite self adhesive anymore - apart from when they interact with human tissue of course!: And now the Observers station (see I have been paying attention to other posts!). I also added some wiring looms between some of the instruments. Not highly visible but I know they are there! Not too sure about the oxygen bottles in the back. The moulding was very clunky and the parts weren't cast very square (or round) so after whittling they aren't too great. I may pop them out later and redoo. It depends on what they look like under the canopy. The Obs seat is yet to be fitted. I also opened up the cannons on the wing and inserted some brass tube, not quite the right calibre but it will do! And in situ: And also the wheel wells Next up I shall start detailing the wing fold build up More coming very soon! Cheers now Bob
  17. Fairey Fulmar at the FAA Museum, pics thanks to Merlin101
  18. Good day everyone! I am currently doing the MPM 1:48 Fulmar and for some reason I have decided to chop the wings up and fold them I have quite a few good reference shots but was wondering if anyone had any others. The area I am most interested in is the main wing fold hinges and also the locking mechanism. Would anyone have any close ups of this area or if anyone is going to the FAA museum can they get some shots of this area? I have the 4+ and Warpaint series as well as walkarounds here and on Prime Portal, but am just lacking clear detail of that area. Any help would be much appreciated. Hopefully the pics below will give you an idea of what I need. Pic credit to the Britmodeller walkaround Many thanks Bob
