  1. I guess everyone has a "first build". When I got back into scale modeling, it was around 1988 I'd reckon. Our small Texas town (pop 5600) had a Winn's Variety store and they sold models. I don't remember anything but Monogram kits but there might've been others. I saw a Monogram 1/48 A-10 on the shelf and thought, why not try to build another model, now that I'm an adult? I bought it and some paints at a hobby shop in a nearby town. I also bought an airbrush; a Paasche Model H that I've used on every model so far. An old tinner "loaned" me an ancient air compressor that pulsed out about 30 lbs. of air. I rigged up a water trap and away I went. I tried hard to take my time and do things differently that I had a kid. Sub-assemblies began to take shape and soon I was spraying the plane. I think that for this one I even used "canned air", that froze up while using it. When the A-10 was finished, I remember being so proud of it! It seemed to be light years from the feeble attempts I had made as a child. Lol, I had no idea that one needed a glossy surface for the decals and of course, they silvered badly. Never mind that, I thought I'd "done good"... Within a short while, I visited a great hobby shop in Austin, Texas (Kings Hobby) and bought my first issue of Finescale Modeler Magazine. That Jan. 1989 issue featured an article by Bob Steinbrun on converting the Monogram F-80 to the YP-80A. OMG! I was mesmerized by his work! It was fantastic and demonstrated just how crappy my A-10 really looked, and just how far I needed to go before I could build good models. My Monogram A-10 sat in the display cabinet since 1990. On the lowest shelf. I had never even considered taking photos of it. But, a few years ago, I did. I took her out to the airport and took a few pics. She's pretty rough around the edges and showing her age I guess, but I thought it might be interesting to see a "beginner's model" for a change. With no further ado, here she is at the Cameron, airport. Thanks for any interest and taking a look, thanks also for your comments!
  2. I have always been a plastic aircraft modeller, but I have alawys been interested in sailing ship models, and have decided to take the plunge. The question is where to start? Solid hull, plank on frame? I welcome all suggestions/recommendations.
  3. Just finished my first build - it's a bit basic, but you have to start somewhere..
  4. Hello all! Casemate UK are sponsoring a group build on britmodeller and we distribute loads of modelling books (Kagero's etc), but do we really know what is involved in the art of creating and building these model kits? I decided that it was definitely time to give it a go and *attempt to* build my very first model! I have bought a 1:72 Scale Lancaster B.III Dambusters kit from Revell and will be posting my progress on here. Please feel free to let me know any hints or tips and feel free to tell me off for any blinding blunders and modelling faux-pas that I'm making - all advice will be needed and welcome! - Casemate UK (Andy)
  5. Hey everyone, You can see my introduction thread here. So, everything has arrived. Got the cutting mat and some tools, it's all pretty exciting! The tweezers I pinched from some manicure set thing, I read that they can come in handy! Obligatory picture of the box (I think they are obligatory anyways, I see them a lot). Now this is all the sprues, more than I thought there would be. Felt a tad overwhelmed at this point, excited overwhelmed but enough to make me think 'this is gonna be hard'. Some individual sprue pictures, I'm loving all the detail in this. Even the figures head doesn't to bad, I had read that I might need to get a replacement head from somewhere (forget the name now). So, all the sprues are back in the box and I've set my cutting mat up. Honestly I'm a weird mix of excited and anxious, I don't want to muck it up, although saying that I am anticipating mistakes galore. I'm glad I've posted up the start for all you to see and witness my first ever build, I'm imagining that will give me added motivation to complete. I had a quick look around online for extra bits for the Matilda, I know you can get little shiny, gold bits (damn memory, can't remember the name of them either!) that make for a more accurate build. It's a tad confusing for someone like me who doesn't yet know all the ins and outs, could anyone recommend a definitive accessory to buy to add on to this kit, that would be braw. Anyways, I'm off now to make my first start on it or better yet I'll go through the instructions first. Take care folks, Pi P.S Sorry about the photos, I've only got my phone will probably have to invest in a decent camera at some point!
  6. Happy new year, fellow Britmodellers! After much lurking in the shadows, I bit the bullet, fired up the Dremel and connected up the Ol’ Harder ‘n Steenbeck… and lo, an Airfix Mig-15! (Almost OOB). A little artistic license in the undersurfaces being nice Russian blue prior to the crazy Koreans slathering on the matt black. Oh what fun it is to drill a 0.3mm hole and try and get some EZ line into it… and let’s not forget the hours on the carpet looking for the teeny tiny resin landing lights (so called “pickup pencil” my a**) Albion alloys micro tubes for guns. Airmodel seat buckles and homemade belts: And a complete new jet pipe with throttle body that is now invisible, sigh.. even first time builders succumb to AMS. I learnt a lot: Airbrushing is hard. Resin is hard. Seam hiding is hard. Placing micro dots of superglue is hard. And getting to anywhere near the standard of most of you guys is pretty hard but what the hey, what have I got to lose but my sanity? Cheers Anil PS Best bit was firing up my new Nikon D600 and finding all the images have huge dust/oil spots because there is fault with their sensors...ah well it only cost £2000, whaddya expect for that?
  7. This is my first post on this sight. This took about 2 years to complete, I used a dragon panzer IV and some gen 2 figures along with some garden material. Hope you enjoy my bit of the Russian front. 8. I'm new here at britmodeller and thought that sharing my build here would be a good idea to present myself. My plan is to build a Lybian MIG-23ML using the MF version from trumpeter. To dress it up I have some AM from Eduard and the Aires ML cockpit and master pitot tube. The decals are from Blackbird decals and the individual will be 7202. Hope you like it and feel free to comment to make me feel welcome . Here is some pictures of what I have and what I’m aiming for. And a picture of the real thing: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Libya---Air/Mikoyan-Gurevich-MiG-23ML/1167950/L/&sid=ca905be3598b0a7755b7304bed243f34 Cheers Jakob
