  1. Time to show my hand. In my defence I was not sure what my had would be until today. I'm joining with a napalm lugging Phantom. Now these two things are commonly associated with the Vietnam War, and you might be forgiven if you expect a F-4E in SEA Camo. However today I learned, with the help of some great people on BM, that the German Bundesluftwaffe also at some point equipped their Phantoms with napalm, and there is even an official documentary to prove it! The movie shows the training excersize "Stählerner Schatten" from 1975 which translates literally to steely shadow, hence the title of my build. Since I intended to model a German F-4F for this GB anyhow; my topic will be now a machine from JaBoG 35 or 36 (haven't decided which one yet) in Norm 72 camo and a loadout as depicted in the movie mentioned above.paints The build will be, as always , in 1/72 and the base will be the venerable Revell kit (pictures to follow). Aftermarket: - Eduard masks - HaHen decals - Model Master tubes - AK paints (first time use) You may have noticed that this is titled part one. This is because I intend to model (atG least) all the major color schemes the German Phantoms had over the years. This will certainly not happen all during this Phantom GB though.
  2. Does anyone know where I can find a set of decals for a standard modern German F-4F in 1/32 scale, such as the JG74 decals in Revell's '50th Anniversary' kit 04743? I've contacted Revell Germany but they no longer have any in stock. Thanks. FH67
  3. Hello all, First WIP on britmodeller and I begin with some phantom builds, maybe 4-5 by the end (If I stick with them all long enough ). Some will be in flight, some parked with possibly flaps down. I know they will not be up to some of the standards set here (unbelievable dedication to detail on this forums) but I hope to learn a lot in the thread and you guys enjoy as much as I do some of my builds. So first up, some of the decals. The airdoc sheets are excellent, especially the grouped stencils for the luftwaffe jets, some are unbelievably tiny! The model decal sheet is old but hopefully usable, I'll spray some micro decal film on them to make sure they do not brake apart when I eventually place them in water. The first along the line will be an F-4J from 74 Squadron, not sure exactly which one yet, but it will be a repainted jet in barley grey as I'm not too fond of the odd blue/green on the US painted jets. This is the Hasegawa kit which to me has captured the phantom shape the best out of any kit in 1/72. I fitted some resin intakes from goffy models and they did not fit very well at all. I bought a few sets a while back and since they seem OOP, maybe because they make steps to the lower fuselage/side fuselage of greater than 1.5mm! Certainly will not use them on any other phantom kits. I will use the slotted stabs from the fujimi kit. The load will be 4xaim-9L, 4xSkyflash from Hase F3, 2 wing tanks and a fujimi gun pod. Currently just finishing the seam work and will begin the rescribing. I read off the forums that the 3M blue tape is ideal for rescribing and I have found exactly that, far better than dymo tape, highly recommend it if you have not tried it yet. Here are some seats and pilots. 2 are fujimi and 2 are hasegawa, they still need details adding yet. Also two pilots for the F-4J, Revell nato crew I think, still need work but I have always been rubbish at painting figures . The second jet along the line is an FGR.2 from 2 squadron circa early seventies. Thinking of using full colour roundels on this and a final gloss finish. It is the Fujimi FG.1 Navy kit converted buy using a spare hasegawa fin tip, filled the catapult hooks and will use stabs from a revell/hase kit. I will go ahead and purchase the odds and ordinance phantom recce suite as I need the strike camera and E.M.I recce pod. I was thinking of buying another fujimi kit for these spares and build that into another FGR.2 but seeing a few go on eBay recently at £40-£50 , I'll get the OAO replacement set. Again the cockpit needs to be finished, atm just finishing the filling phase. Nice fitting kit but had a few sink marks in a few places. Thats all for now, probably a few days cleaning up the F-4j before primer. I will try and use xtracolor paints as much as possible but for the barley grey. I think humbrols hue is a better match, so I have a question. If I mix humbrol matt barley grey with their 'gloss cote' will it spray to a nice glossy finish like xtracolor and actually dry? Best regards, David.
  4. Ello gents and ladies.... I caved..... So there will be another 32 scale Spook in the house.... It will also be a Luftwaffe one and a F-4F, but the scheme has yet to be decided..... I hope that it will be a colourful one and an easy one... As time is a big thing here.... Pictures and so on will follow in the next couple of days. PS: Due to family illness I am giving a heads up already at the start that I might not finish, but the build will give me the time off and the inspiration to keep it going.... So, from the south west part of Norway.... So long for now... Ørjan
  5. I recently bought this kit, and became aware that there is a concensus, that something is wrong with the nose. I went on the net and made some research. It seems the nose is too skinny and tapers too much to the front. There seems to be some options: Buy a resin replacement nose or make one yourself. As the resin replacement nose seem to be unavailable at the moment, I decided to try to make my own - I mean, how hard can it be? Once back on the net I found some pictures of the correct nose, put the image in 'Windows Paint' and resized it to the same diameter as Revell's nose and printed this. Cut the print out, glued it to some thin plasticcard, cut a 'X' in the Revell nose, and ended up with this: Using some 'Green Stuff' I filled out the blanks to get this: Which finished looked like this: (awfull, isn't it?) Using my trusty old motortool I sanded it back until the white pasticcard came through again - like this: After some more sanding and polishing I sprayed it with grey paint and this is what I got: I then sanded it back looking for imperfections which I duly filled with putty: And now it's finished-ish. I still need to sand back the paint to get a smooth finish (here you should play 'Smooth Operator' by Sade! ) And here it is: I don't know why this last picture is rotated, all the rest worked fine - but then again it may be a good thing, as we humans are not supposed to be perfect as not to upset the modelling gods! Hope my small venture into the world of correcting noses have been of some help (Glanzing through the gossipmagazines I'd say there are some Hollywood plasticsurgeons who could learn a thing or two about nosejobs! ) Cheers Hans J
  6. F-4F 37+11 Wittmund ...when the stuff arrives.....! Al
  7. Here is my F-4F Phantom II in 1/72. Aircraft 37+03, special painting for 50th anniversary of JG 71 in 2009. Model made few years ago with Revell 04685 kit and Eduard`s PE parts. Decals modified by myself (Revell`s decals were made for aircraft with unfinished painting!).
  8. F-4F Phantom "PHAREWELL" 1:72 Revell If you have not heard of the F-4 phantom where have you been for the past 56 years! The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was conceived as an all-weather, long-range fighter bomber for the US Navy. It has been in service for over fifty years now and is still serving with distinction with air forces around the world, although active users are now becoming fewer. More than five thousand Phantoms were built. The F-4F is a simplified, lightweight version of the US Air Forces highly capable F-4E, built specifically for the Luftwaffe however these aircraft we not to be fitted with "Beyond Visual Range" weapons so were limited to gun and sidewinders for Air-2-Air combat. The Luftwaffe's F-4Fs were upgraded under the Improved Combat Efficiency (ICE) programme in the late eighties to early nineties. The main changes under ICE were the introduction of the APG-65 radar (as in F/A-18 Hornet) and AMRAAM. Germany finally retired its phantoms in 2013. To celebrate this Revell have re-released their popular and well-regarded F-4F kit in the markings of the last aircraft to fly. A full review of the Revell kit can be seen here in a review by Paul. The only differences in this kit being the decals and the fact that Revell have moulded the kit in blue plastic. Decals Unsurprisingly the option in the box is for the Phantom Pharewell scheme. This was gold on metallic blue. The modeller will have to paint the airframe blue and then apply the gold decals. Conclusion This is a really great kit of the F-4F from Revell. The level of detail is very good indeed and it will look very eye-catching in the Pharewell colour scheme provided. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. 9. Just wrapped up this Hase F-4F for the ARC 'Toom group build today while "working from home". Made a number of mistakes, including forgetting the slime lights and the little loops above the ejection seats. C'est la vie. Please excuse the photo quality, I use a cell phone camera, and right now the sky is falling here in Chicago.
