  2. Reini's Century Series - F-100D Super Sabre Italeri's (ESCI) old and trusty F-100 is still a decent kit I think. Sure, it's lacking on some details (like the cockpit) and the wing slats are closed but despite being little dated, I like the kit. Box contents. I've built two of these before and for this build I'm going all in with the aftermarket items so I won't be using much of these parts 3D printed ladder, really fine looking thing. I just hope I won't break it... Some of the aftermarket parts. Upgrade for the cockpit as the kit one is quite spartan. Ejection seat is good upgrade but this is my fist try on the full Aires resin cockpit. Exhaust nozzle, another good upgrade, really adds details. Full napalm loadout, as I will be doing a vietnam era strike fighter. Tyres and a Master pitot tube, finding it really hard to do a build without Master pitot tube. Decals that I will be using. And then this beauty. The wing slats are closed in the Italeri kit and this will correct that. It also adds landing gear bay details. I've built couple Italeri Hun's before. This is my first kit since I re-started my hobby several years ago. This was my second attempt few years later with some experience and airbrush etc. For this build I modified the original wings to have open slats. But it's nice to have ready made part for that now.   3. This is my ESCI Super Sabre in 1/48th scale. It's not the best model kit ever produced.. In fact, there are lots of inaccuracies, but still I enjoyed this build, especially finishing in the colours of the Danisch Airforce, which gives a lot of chances for weathering. I used an ejection seat from the spares box, since the original seat from ESCI is a joke. Also I made a new pitot tube from brass tubing. The ladder is from a Monogram kit, as well as the Bullpup missile. I read that Danish Huns were Bullpup compatible, so I decided to use one. The wing fences were cut out of evergreen, and only yesterday did I read that Danish aircraft didn't have them.. Well, here are the pictures: Kind regards, Gerben

  5. Hi all, As I was moving house lately, I stumbled on a Monogram kit I all but forget I had. The box was mint and still had the cellophane wrapper on. I built the kit when it was first released in 1980. I remember being astounded by the details and the precision moulding. I really enjoyed painting the cockpit and the intricate interior. At the same period was issued a new French aviation magazine with an article entitled ‘Skarks over the Red Sea’ and dealing with French AF F-100D operations in Africa. The cover sported a brace of F-100s with a spectacular shark mouth which struck many a modeller. When recently an old IPMS friend told me that he had the corresponding decals ( and accompanying resin recce pod) in double, I was in business again. The game’s afoot. I’ll build this kit OOB without any aftermarket help -aside the decals and resin pod of course- to try to relive the exciting moments I had. Having said that, I’d also try to update the 40 year-old kit to 2020 standard with my meager skills. Watch this space, Cheers, Quang
  6. Well, finally finished after spending a little time on the shelf where very little happens! After my C- and D- models I embarked on the F- with the intention of finishing here as a Turk and I eventually managed it. Sorry about the image. I am less than enthusiastic about her :(. It is the Italeri kit combined, like all of my Super Sabres, with the Trumpeter wing and main u/c. This gives a reasonably accurate wing with slats. Unfortunately the Italeri kit has some faults – canopy, main wheels to mention just two. I corrected the first with a Rob Taurus vac form. The main wheels had to be rubbed down to the correct(ish) diameter. I tried some resin aftermarket wheels but they were equally inaccurate! The “journey” was long and drawn out, speckled with problems. For example, the Colorado decal set was clearly sub-standard, with most decals cracking and falling apart when within a centimetre or two of the model. :(. I also inflicted some problems myself, such as rubbing off some of the fuselage flash decals when I was cleaning up the Flory dirt weathering. I got it fixed (almost) with a combination of other black/yellow decals from my decal files, plus a bit of touching up. All this meant that my enthusiasm waned and in the end I simply rushed to finish her. Rather disrespectful to the kit but that is how I felt. She depicts one of the last new Super Sabres delivered to Turkey and operated by 113 Filo (Squadron) from Eskişehir Air Base in the 1950s/60s (below). What did I do/use? Italeri F-100F 1/72 Trumpeter F-100F 1/72 – for the slatted wings and main gear struts/doors only Aires seats Rob Taurus vac form canopy Colorado decals (squadron marks) - which are inaccurate in design but all I had. They were also very brittle. TigerHead Decals for the national marks Microscale stencils I printed the serials and codes myself Humbrol Enamel 191 Chrome steel (rear end), 27001 Aluminium (overall), Humbrol enamel Matt Cote with Gloss Cote used for the rear end Flory Dirt for weathering I hope some one likes her ...   7. The Williams paint shop has just wheeled out its latest creation in the form of a further Super Sabre. This time it is an F-100D operated by the Flyvevåbnet, the Royal Danish Air Force. I had wanted to build one of these highly weathered and touched up machines for a long time. It is built by following my previous and successful method of merging the Esci and Trumpeter kits, using the slatted wing of the latter. This produces the most representative 1/72 model, being accurate all round rather than using the Trumpeter kit straight and tolerating the narrow cockpit and inaccurate intake. The Esci has the right dimensions and accepts the wings easily. The downside is that you lose the extra detail of the Trumpeter! Hey ho! I did get lazy at one point and elected not to set the tail plane on a pivot, as I did with my C-model, so that it I could sit with this slightly tilted back as they were without the hydraulics powered up. Some sat without this tilt and so it convinced me. I have depicted her as a G-744 as I imagine she was shortly before being transferred to the Turkish Air Force via Aviano AB, Italy in 1981-82 and thereafter operated by the 8th Main Jet Base, Konya. I referenced images (including those below) from a while before this time and at the time of transfer, producing what I feel is a reasonable compromise. Of course, in Turkish service the ex-Danish machines never went for depot maintenance - flying them until they wore out - and so weathered and weathered more and more until they finally stopped and were retired! My reference images included: What did I do? Well: Used Esci kit plus Trumpeter wings, slats, pylons, wing tanks, main gear legs and doors. Drilled out the intake to give more depth Drilled out the rear fuselage to accommodate the jet pipe and refine the edges Used Aires jet pipe with the kit “F-102”-style afterburner can, modified to make it more accurate. Aires cockpit set with a Pavla Martin Baker seat (as close to Mk5 as I could) Removed the wing fences Added wing tip RHAW antennas made from plastic rod, TACAN aerial on top of the nose, additional nose blade aerials (RWR, UHF, Old Bullpup) Added static disperser to the rear of the fin (using a fine house brush fibre) Added new nav light on top of the fuselage from plastic rod, mid way, and lights on the RHAW pods on the wings. The paint scheme was achieved by using a lightened (with white) Humbrol 86 Light Olive Drab with a 116 US Dark Green (FS34079) to add the re-painted seams, etc. The rear end was painted 1) Humbrol 191 and then 2) Humbrol 63 Sand in light airbrush strokes so the 191 shows through a little. Then I used Tamiya Weathering Sets to add variation all over – Green, Silver and Oil stain primarily. Here and there I used a very fine sanding stick to buff up areas that got some wear and tear. I weathered her with Flory Dirt. The decals are the excellent Stoppel set, which includes great stencils and technical markings. The only thing I had to make was the serial (including the tail) because there wasn’t two “4”s to make the G-744. I printed these on my computer. Hi, It has been a while since I completed anything, but with having a little more time on my hands just recently I have completed Trumpeters 1/48 F-100C in the colours of 188th TFS, New Mexico Air National Guard, Tuy Hoa, 1070. I used Eduard's cockpit, exterior and undercarriage set to enhance the detail. Paints were Mr Hobby on the upper surfaces and Life Color on the underside. The metallic paint on the rear of the fuselage are Vallejo's dark aluminium and aluminium. I built this kit as my cousin in the USA was an instrument fitter on these when he was in the Ohio ANG stationed in South Korea. Unfortunately, no markings are available for a F-100C machine of the Ohio ANG, however there are for a D model. Guess which kit is next on the list to purchase. Next at on the production line is an Italeri F7F N3 Tigercat in Korean War colours. Regards Andy
  9. Hi all, A couple of questions for the all-knowing collective.... Does anyone know where I can get a 3-view plan, overhead particularly, of Super Sabres with the Danish wing tip ECM pods? Does anyone know where I can source a better afterburner can for a machine upgraded to the "F-102"-style? The kit offering is woefully in accurate. Thanks ain advance. Martin

  13. HI Fellow modellers! Greetings from Uruguay Today I´m introducing to you my ESCI F-100D Super Sabre. This a very old but also very accurate kit. The only things I added were an Airwaves PE and made an intake duct with epoxy to a better effect. No major issues with this kit and the decals were in excellent condition and settled very nice. These planes were painted aluminium so I did no metal variations except on the wings. I hope you like it and every critic and suggestions are welcomed. Sorry for my basic english!!! A bit of something for everybody here with the main types everyone knows and a couple of experimentals for those who like to be different!
