Get into your rhino suits, because it's here at last, Nomore Shelfspace's build of the top-hole Airfix 1/72 Defiant Mk.1. I painted the whole aeroplane gloss black and had no trouble with decal silvering, ahem... final coat is that admirable substance Xtracrylic matt varnish. Only building problems were down to Airfix's insistence on moulding things like undercarriage legs and antenna (and guns...) to almost scale thickness. Needless to say the guns were in a sorry state once I managed to surgically remove them from the sprue. I straightened them, coated with medium thick cyano and then gave them a quick squirt of Deluxe Materials Rocket Blaster (cyano accelerator) - result, nice rigid guns... one of the underside aerials just broke into several pieces while trying to de-sprue it so I made a new one from rod. I must admit I still wonder if anyone at Airfix is actually a model maker - their web site (I don't have their catalogue) is full of glossy CG images and I admit the new box art (also CG of course) is superb, but nowhere have I seen a built up model in their own material. Other than that, like everyone is saying, the new Daffy is a masterpiece. It's got personality! Especially to those ancient enough to remember the old one...
