1. I had the Airfix PR.XIX in the stash already, and could have just gone for the Swedish scheme straight from the box but I was browsing the big H and saw some interesting decals that had a story attached. They were a big investment for one kit, so to justify them, I got another one - modelling logic, got to love it First up, the Sword FR.XIVe box: And the Airfix PR.XIX: The decals. I'll be doing the Indian FR.XIV on the right and the Thai PR.XIX on the left. And a bit of background. It appears that as RAF India units disbanded or came home, they left their aircraft to the fledgling RIAF, who also kept the aircraft they'd been loaned towards the end of WW2 meaning they had quite a fleet of mixed marks of late war Spitfires: http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Aircraft/History/919-Spitfire.html The Thai one is PS888. Yes, that PS888, the same airframe as in the Airfix box and this article: PS888 in Singapore Sprue shots will follow when I start building. Andy
2. Hiya Guys, what can I say, yet another Spitfire. I just needed a quick build before going on my hols and this one was sitting in the ever diminishing stash. Built straight OOB and painted with Vallejo model air, as the paint was going on I thought it was looking to dark but once I put the final matt coat it lightened up nicely. I tried black basing and once again i found it doesn't work for me in this scale particularly when painting camouflage. Anyway here it is and as usual all comments and criticisms will be received in the same good natured manner in which I am sure they are offered. Thanks for looking.
3. As I mentioned in Chat, I've decided to get off'f my derriere and actually build something for a change. Not only that, I intend to finish this one! I have to do this because there is absolutely no room left in the Cupboard of Shame. I've half made up my mind to commit to entering a build in every remaining GB this year, which will be quite a feat for me. I considered the one I've chosen for this GB for the Gollden Years GB but as it is such a good fit here I felt I might as well do it now (as Arnie would say). Besides, it's not like I don't have anything else for the GYGB . Given the time limit this will be OOB and only lightly weathered - no Spanish School here. So, to start with, here is the obligatory sprue shot Not much flash considering its vintage (1975) although there are lots of seam lines and the sprue gates look horrendous in places. Obviously, detail is a bit soft by modern standards but I imagine this was quite a well received kit in its day. Time to get stuck in. The first session produced this The driver was held in place by a blue-tac cushion whle I sorted his arms out. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the fit. The layout of the parts on the sprues, by contrast, is an absolute dog's breakfast - plenty of picking them up and putting them down as I hunt for the right part. Another session later gave this Ready for some paint! TTFN Andy M.
4. I thought I'd signed-up for this Group Build but it looks like I didn't, I hope no-one minds me joining in with this. I believe three Spitfires were delivered to the Turkish Air Force in 1939/40, a time when every Spitfire was likely to be needed for the defence of the UK - which shows how important Turkish neutrality was. Two were later returned to the RAF and used for training in Egypt. Anyway, I'll start this in the next couple of days and, as I've made around 30 Airfix Spitfires, expect it to be a quick build so I should have time to the others on the sheet and, if I can source some transfers, a couple more. Thanks for looking.
5. Hi Guys, this is my latest offering the Ju87 Stuka. This is one of Airfix's retools and I have to say it was a pleasure to build, with very little fiddling and fettling. It was built straight out of the box and it was my first experience using Vallejo Model Air paints. I was so impressed with the paints that I ordered all the colours to complete the models in my modest stash. The paint job was inspired by Gisbod, I hope he doesn't me copying his technique. Anyway here it is, as always comments and criticisms are very welcome. Thanks for looking.
6. I had intended to build this one in the Airfix GB but unfortunately this particular kit was first issued too late to be eligible. The aircraft is one of five Boeing 727s used on the Cape Town to Jo'Burg route by Comair but finished in full BA livery. Modifications include: Rear wing fences removed and new leading edge ones added Full size nose gear doors from plasticard Daco cockpit Top edge of #2 intake reshaped where it meets the fin Rear HF antenna from brass rod FDcals for the tail art / doors and Authentic Decals for cabin & cockpit windows. Paints used include Halfords Appliance White and Fiat Capri Blue, MC218 Aluminium (leading edges) and SM07 Chrome Silver (engines). Build thread here Anyway, enough words so here are a few photos and one with a DelftBlue 727-200 (the blue really is blue and not black!)
7. This is my entry in the Airfix P-51D special group build. It's a pretty good kit straight from the box, the only addition were decals from the spares box. The Germans got their hands on at least 2 airworthy D models, later in the war they were over painted with a dark colour, I am assuming RLM 71. Both were found belly landed at wars end by allied soldiers.
8. The other vehicles in the RAF emergency sets were described as K6 Crash Tenders. There is even more dispute over their use / colour / date of service etc - so I thought lets go mad and do a bit of 'what if'. K6s came in many different variants so I turned them into flat back lorries. The covered one is made from 2 CMP 15cwt truck beds - stuck together - as is the canvas canopy. The open one was scratch built from bits of evergreen and filled with stowage robbed from various PSC kits. I enjoyed these so much that I have imminent plans for 4 of the PSC CMP kits - as the bits I used went together really nicely. I hope you like them - here we go again... If you want to check out how I cobbled them together they are in the WIP thread here... As always - constructive comments are most welcome and thanks for looking - Steve
9. It is known that I probably have the worst self control on this side of @corsaircorp but this is actually @Roger Newsome s fault. I was looking at his Whitley build thread when it dawned upon me that this bomber should not been named for a suburb in Coventry, it should have been named after the king of the woods, the moose! After all, someone must have taken a close look on the muzzle of the moose when designing the nose of the Whitley. spot the difference? Atleast I cannot unsee it anymore 😵 But I digress... Vacation is getting closer by the minute, and the need to start another summer kit grows equally fast or even faster. Yesterday I couldn't stop myself anymore, I just HAD to cut some plastic and stick a few bits together, and whoops, another kit was started. But who's counting? Anyway, I started with the wings since I'm still waiting for some Eduard Etch to complicate the office a bit. After a happy evening snipping plastic and shoot some primer I arrived here. Very novel approach to the rear fuselage I'd say (it was called corridor, right?) Can't wait to shoot some grey-green on it and see how it looks... The engine nacelles was both tricky and great at the same time, but that's typical of moderin Airfix IMHO. There's a nasty ejector pin mark on the firewall and I didn't take the time to fix it since my judgement is that it'll be impossible to see! Right, lets try to work for a few more hours before heading home to start spraying.
10. I've been heavily involved in Group Builds lately bit as my last two builds in the Mediterranean GB are approaching the finish line, I thought I'd join this one because, like a lot of us older gentlemen, my first kits were Airfix ones bought at Woolworths. Also, @Ventora3300 suggested I might like to join. Anyway, a dig through the stash revealed a suitable candidate. I think this is the second boxing of the 1978 kit (the first had 'new' in the bottom right-hand corner). Here's what's in the box: It's lacking detail in the wheelwells and cockpit (i.e. there isn't any) but I'm lead to believe that it's generally accurate. I'll be building it OOB, except where my limited skills allow me.to add some details. One thing that will be required is aftermarket transfers... the kit ones don't look to good: Luckily, I have this Hannants sheet: Which has the kit's aircraft on it. I have to finish 3 Spitfires, a Hurricane IIc and a Blenheim before starting this one so there'll not be any cutting and painting of plastic until this coming Monday. Thanks for looking.
11. Edit: After completing this, I've continued building more Mustangs - rather than spamming the forum with several threads, I just keep using this. Another "return to the hobby thread". First some manners by presenting myself, since this is my first post in this forum. I'm from Sweden, stopped modelling when I became a teenager - now I am middle-aged (<-first admittance of said fact) and have a 5-year old son to whom I recently bought a model. We built it together and I think I enjoyed it even more than he did. He was hooked though, so I bought him another, one of the new Airfix Mustangs. But this time he didn't let me help him! Not a bit! My fingers were itching, so I bought one more for dad, which will be the subject of this thread The kit is the new P-51D from Airfix (box art below). It depicts a P51D-10-NA with serial number 44-14207, as flown by Lt Eugene James of 352nd FG, 328th FS. Code PE-E, nickname Rose Marie (James's girl?) AND Kelly Kid 2 on the opposite side (apparently some relative of the crew chief). Several images are available here: http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/gallery.php?Group=352 It's completely different hobby now, thanks to the advent of the internet and modern machining. So much information... almost overload. Last time I built a model I had access to exactly two books with colour profiles in the library. Decided to write this log in the hope I could get some feedback and to have a log to get back to - if not for anything else than as a reminder on what not to do I aim for historical accuracy, as I see models as little windows to the past, so any correction or criticism is appreciated. I've started already, assembled cockpit and fuselage. I built Airfix's blue-nosed mustang sometime in the 80s or 90s, but that was something different. The level of detail and fit of the pieces in this upgraded kit is fantastic. Anyhow I added some bits and pieces. Fuselage assembled - no gaps at all. Leaving the propeller until later probably makes for easier build and painting, but I feel something is amiss if it doesn't spin.
12. AIRFIX HO/OO Village Church Howdy folks - this is my first venture into the diorama region of the forum. I have recently been having a massive amount of fun in the Airfix: The Golden Years GB… https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/forum/626-airfix-the-golden-years-gb/ …however I know a lot of folk don’t tend to look at the group builds – unless it is of special interest to their ‘field of expertise’. The GB is covering all aspects of ‘old Airfix’ which includes a lot of buildings and the like – so – I thought I would pop some finished items here, in case they are of interest to anyone in the future. May I firstly show you my churchyard build. This was the first element of a ‘proper’ diorama I had planned and I’m a complete diorama novice – so please be kind… ...it lights up too... If you want to check out all the fun I had along the way you can find the build thread here… Thanks for looking and if you have any useful tips I could use for future builds – please feel free to comment. I hope you like it and happy modelling - Steve
13. Hey everyone It seems that lately I've been in the modelling doldrums, I've started many kits but I have just lost interest as the build has gone on, my 1/48 Lysander and 1/32 Spitfire being prime examples, in fact the last kit I finished was my 1/48 Defiant which I believe was completed a couple of months ago.. ..So I've been off work for the past week with Bursitis (swollen elbow) and to be honest I was feeling a little hacked off. Anyway I was routing around the work shop and I dug out my 1/24 Hawker Typhoon and in a fit of enthusiasm I decided to spend some time on it, I'm detailing the motor and needed some plastic struct so I nipped down to the Kernow model rail centre in Cambourne. Looking around the shop I noticed, nestled amongst a load of other kits an Airfix 1/72 DC3 Dakota Mk IV.... I've read good reviews about this kit and it was only £22.99 so in a fit of passion I bought it. This happened on Thursday morning and here is where I am as of now, 15:35 on a rainy Saturday afternoon... ..I haven't been this enthusiastic about a model for a long time, the kit itself is brilliant and although it doesn't just fall together it is very satisfying to build and it certainly looks the part. The doors are only tacked on at the moment to help when it comes to painting, I'll finish her as G-AGKN. The build has been OOB other than four bits of masking tape to represent seatbelts and I have used the Eduard masking set CX-401 as its just easier than masking by hand. Later on today I'll go around all the seams to see what needs attending too, carry out any re scribing (there shouldn't be too much) and get some paint down. Cheers all Iain
14. Mmm... During building an 1/72 Airfix Sea Harrier FA2 (A04052) i noticed I couldn't find the scopes/inlets that are claerly seen on the box picture. Those two scopes placed on both sides above the fuselage just aft of the canopy... Did Airfix miss those parts or am I not looking sharp enough om the build instructions? In the older GR7 kit (04039) and the T.10 kit those parts are numbered 114 and 115... Cheers / André
15. Here's my build from the 'P-51D dedicated GB', build thread over there, but not much to say or see really. Only my second new tool Airfix I've done and it is a cracking little kit, perfect Mojo restorer if needed! Only problem was the un-usable Aerial mast, which I did a couple of attempts at scratching it, turned a little too short and is leaning rearwards for some reason, but I'm just gonna leave it. Used the markings from the Xtradecal sheet X72228, for a 3 Sqn RAAF machine, KH716 CV-P based in Italy 1945. Paint was AK Interactive 'Extreme Metal' Aluminium, airbrushed with no issues straight from the bottle. Rest was done with Vallejo and Humbrol Acrylics. A bit of Vallejo Satin Varnish was used to dull the gloss of the decals down a bit and randomly brushed on over the airframe to try to vary the finish. A light weathering was dry-brushed on, the 'chipping/faded' effect on the anti-dazzle panel was to hide my mistake fuselage join!
16. Here I present my latest, a Hawker Hurricane IIc by Airfix and was a therapeutic 'test' build on a spare kit from the stash. From the start it was going to be a 'wheels up' subject as I plan to put the occasional aircraft on the ceiling of the future 'Man Cave (Mk II)' and being an Airfix kit, it came with pilot! The kit was built OOB and was very a good build with little or no problems, which surprised me some what. Cockpi was a little basic but was enough when you're stuffing a figure in the pit. Fuselage halves were joined and wings added, no filler in sight. Undercarriage and wheels fitted with no problems, nice and flush. I've never been happy with disks as dynamic props, so I ditched the blades and made a solid spinner, looks miles better to me. Everything was primed, and here comes the test, and painted using Colourcoat enamel paints. Paints were thinned 50/50, applied at 15psi and were lovely. Finished off using the kits decals for L8957, 34 Sqn, RAF SEAC, India, 1943/1944. The 'fluffy' stuff is some synthetic stuffing to simulate clouds. Stuart
17. Ready for your inspection is my 1:72 English Electric Lightning F.2A by Airfix. It is an out of the box build, and was a change from my recent WW2 builds. The kit went together with relative ease, the main problem arising when I spilt glue in the clear section of canopy😤. However, I carried on (hoping it wouldn't be to visible). Instead of the suggested Humbrol acrylics, I have opted mostly for Vallejo. These I find easy to mix and thin and smooth to spray, giving a nice even finish. I have opted for minima/light weathering and finished it off with a coat of Vallejo satin varnish. Thanks for looking.
18. In a change to my recent builds (which have mostly been WWII era or earlier), I am about to embark on an aircraft which represented a massive leap in the RAF's capabilities, namely the English Electric Lightning F.2A. The box contains set of detailed instructions, with one colour scheme, and a small decal sheet. There are 4 grey sprues all with little or no flash and a nice amount of detail. I plan to create an out of the box build, with landing gear down. It's been a while since I've built a jet so it's going to be odd not having props and radial engines to build. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly.
19. Yet another one ,Vallejo and Xtracrylix paints used Managed to knock all of the guns off ,found some scratch built the rest .Haven't done any weathering .
20. Another quick-ish build of the Airfix FW190 new tool. WIP here. Mr Paint RLM colours and various Mr Hobby varnishes. Decals from Skys may not be scaled accurately but were truly exquisitely printed. Weathering by Flory Models dark wash and er, ladies (?) eye shadow...A few challenges but this Butcher Bird looks suitably menacing and is relatively easy to build if you've got enough power tools and superglue 😉 All in all, very satisfying, especially spraying the tiny mottles with my excellent new Badger Sotar 20/20 plus the masked/sprayed top wing Balkankreusz. Still need a few pointers on photography, shame that @IrritableRabbit aka Jonathan Macauley is no longer active, he was a master of the digital model photograph. well that's it from me for today, thanks for looking and have a happy weekend. Anil
21. The Brisfit was first flown in 1916 and entered service with the RFC in April 1917. No. 38 Squadron were the first occupants of Stamford (Wittering) and by July 1917 were flying the F.2B. No 5 Training Station at Easton-on-the-Hill was equipped with them from 1918 to 1919. No. 138 Squadron was formed from newly qualified pilots transferring en bloc from Training Depot Stations, ‘A’ Flight was provided by No. 5 Training Depot Station, Easton-on-the-Hill, ‘B’ Flight from No. 1 Training Depot Station, Wittering (renamed 10-04-18 after the forming of the RAF). Easton and Wittering also supplied pilots for Nos. 130 and 155 Squadrons. The Brisfit continued in RAF service until 1932.
22. Hi all this is my latest build, airfix's new ju 87 b-2/r-2. I added the following aries ju 87b cockpit (designed for italieri) Quick boost wing mg barrels, pilot & gunners seat, propeller, exhausts. Resin wheels & extra mg magazines & gun sight. Stretched sprue for the radio airial. Copper wire for trim activators. Eduard rear mg 15, 250 kg & 50 kg bombs Kagero decals for the aircraft markings Aero master & xtradecal for the national markings Paints used extracolor for the rlm 70,71,65,02,66 colours & colourcoats for the tan (a mix of giallo mimetico 4 & grigio sabbia chiaro to match the snake decal) . The rlm 70,71 was masked using tamya tape, the tan was sprayed free hand using a badger 200 g fitted with a fine tip. Weathering was done using pastels. Thanks for looking, comments are welcomed. Nick
23. Joining you with this kit, Costing £2.99 from Home Bargains in 2016. I swapped one prop for leftovers from XtraDecal set X72-099 Mine most likely to be WDD with that black arrow symbol, as archery is my game.
24. Three from the BoB - well actually the Hurricane is April 1940 according to the painting guide but perhaps it made it home to defend the Home Isle against the Luftwaffe??? I really like these 1/72 Airfix kits. The are fairly accurate, easy to assemble, come with a "wheels up" option and a pilot figure! I acquired a set of AIrfix stands and used them here - talk about a step back in time!!! They are all built out of the box and airbrushed using Tamiya paints on top and Gunze aqueous for the Sky. Kit decals too. I built them over a year ago but put them into storage. This week I got them out and painted them. I lost a few bits along the way including a pair of the turret guns and the rear antenna for the Defiant. They look pretty cool together and I think the large code letters suit these older types. Cheers!!
25. Hi folk's here's my marker for the GB,walked into the shop straight to the Airfix shelf no BF109 so grabbed this one before the endless deliberation of choosing what to do,nice kit,no vices and a simple scheme, going to have to go with last year's option of Sunday and Monday morning as work at 2 PM on Sunday and visiting family after lunch Monday. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235025882-achtung-spitfire-now-operational/& Last yer'sbuild.
