  1. My Hurricane build has come to a bit of a stand still, I was spending too much time messing around with it that I lost interest, its not been relegated to the shelf of doom, just put on the back burner for now. So to get my enthusiasm back I decided to have a go at the Tamiya Mk 1 Spit in the markings of 57 OTU, RAF Hawarden 1941/42. I believe the plane that I'm building was flown by FO Ginger Lacy. I have used elements of the eduard zoom set for the cockpit plus fuse wire, I replaced the seat with an Aires example that I had floating about and I'm using Quickboost exhausts and propeller. So some pictures...(infact they are chronalogical from when I started painting to where I am as of tonight). So there we are, I'm happy with how it's going. Tomorrow I hope to get the serial number sprayed on, the leading edge sprayed yellow and a gloss coat applied. Let me know what you think. Yours aye Iain.
  2. Well here it goes...After what seems like a life time I finally have my man cave finished and its time to start something new for me and thats to finish a model. For my first foray into a WIP I have chosen the fab Italeri Hawker Hurricane Mk 1 depicting a 247 sqn machine, Flown by Sqn Ldr Bod Stanford Tuck, late 1940. I intend to use the Aires cockpit set, Brengun wheels, Sky models decals and all paints will be Tamiya acrylics thinned using Tamiya thinners. This is going to be my first build for a very long time, but I hope with comments, pearls of wisdom and snippets of information from you guys I WILL get it finished. So First off the obligatory Kit and accessories shot. I hope to make a start on her to night and I'll post regular updates as I go. Cheers gents and see you soon Woodster
  3. Russian Rocket Pod, Submunition Dispensers & US Fire Bombs 1:48 Aero Bonus by Aires These sets are just what the doctor ordered if you're looking for some more unusual ordnance for your aircraft models, and want the highest detail possible from the packet. Aero Bonus are a subsidiary brand of Aires, so you know that the quality is going to be of the highest standard. Each set comes in a flexible flat(ish) pack very similar to the Quickboost packs we already know. B8V20 Russian Rocket Launcher (480033) This is a pod carried by the Ka-50, Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters, and can carry up to 20 of the unguided S-8 unguided 3.1 inch rockets. Two sets of parts are included to allow the modeller to build up a pair of pods from three main body parts, and twenty individual rocket tips, which allows you to fill the pod to whatever extent you choose ready for action, or just back from a sortie. A small sheet of decals are included to detail the pods once painted. KMGU-2 Russian Submunition Dispensers (480040) These are advanced second generation submunition dispensers of a similar variety to the British JP233 runway buster, but are cylindrical with eight individually opening sections that dispense different types of mines to make the intended target a little uncomfortable for the opposition. They can be used by most Russian Attack aircraft, including the Mig-23, Mig-27, Mig-29, Su-25, Su-27, Mi-24, Ka-50 and Ka-52. The units are single parts, and have a small attachment point at the rear of the dispenser that should require only a little clean-up. There are added wings on the base to protect the four delicate stabilising fins during its time in the packet, which would be best snapped off to allow easy access to the fins for removal. A small decal sheet provides stencilling and guide markings for each unit when painted. Mk-77 Fire Bombs (480039) The Mk-77 is America's primary incendiary bomb that supposedly "better for the environment" than Napalm, containing less benzene and using kerosene instead of gasoline. Whether the people in the vicinity of the blast would agree is another matter entirely! The set includes two of these snub-nosed tanks, with plenty of surface detail, including filling ports and stabilising vanes along the top of the tank. Each one is made by removing the tank from its pouring stub, and either drilling out a 2mm hole in the bottom to accept one of the two detonator caps (the other is pre-drilled), or drilling it out to 4mm to receive a top-hat shaped insert that then takes the cap. Which Mod out of 4,5, or 6 that pertains to is for you to check your references. Two suspension lugs are added to matching holes on the top of the tank, and here the finesse of the moulding is truly stunning, with each one having a hole through its centre. 4. Is there any difference between the FG1 and FGR2 Phantom exhausts? I have the Aires 1/48 FGR2 resin exhausts, but just wondered if there was any difference between the two in reality? Cheers.
  5. Well it took ar longer then expected, but I did keep my promise that she would not end in the shelf of shame. She is a Revell 1/48 Viper that I started this one for the F-16 GB here: http://www.britmodel...topic=234917085 And after taking my time to do this Viper justice I dare present to you the result: I made extensive use of K4's decal fixer and the canopy is tinted with he's prototipe for clear paints.
  6. P-40M/N Wheels & Paint Masks - Recommended kit: Academy Aires 1:72 The Academy kit comes with two types of wheels, the covered type and uncovered type with the spokes on display to which this set is designed to replace. These are far better than the quite anemic looking kit parts with good depth to the spokes and better overall proportions between the hubs and tyres. The tyres have fine grooves and the rear of the wheels is equally well moulded. Whilst they're designed for the Academy kit, they should be easy to adapt for any other kit too that doesn't use the covered type. The tyres aren't flattened unlike many these days, although due to the size, this doesn't negate the look of them in any way. The paint masks are a great addition to take some of the pain out of the painting stage and should be quite easy to apply due to the flat profile of the wheel hubs Conclusion A great upgrade for a prominent feature of the P-40. The quality is excellent and the wheels are a simple direct replacement. Some might prefer flattened tyres as oppose to these, but as you can see from the picture, they look good as they are and a rub down on the bottom should quite easily achieve the desired effect.
