Hi all and great to look back at 2018 and the bits of plastic I stuck together, whether for Group Builds here or elsewhere, or just for fun. All are 1/72 unless noted. As I'm slowly getting into airbrushing, all of these are brush painted, except for any white finishes which are a rattle can with brush finish on top. I have built five WW1 aircraft dioramas over the years 2000-2016 for the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa Canada.This all came about by chance and luck, chance, because I had just stopped teaching woodcarving at the time due to illness and luck because my first diorama was seen online by a fellow artist who worked for the museum and asked me if my stuff was available for donation with income tax relief.Of course, I was extremely happy because I had been wondering where I would keep such a large piece in my home in fact at the time I was working on an old TV cabinet that was to become its permanent home.One thing led to another and I ultimately built them five dioramas which are now on permanent display.It has been great to find a second career at sixty and make a little money too.Cheers! Hi all, I have been modelling for the last couple of years now after not touching a kit since I was young. To be honest I joint a forum to learn the "New game" which i did and got lots of help but it seems as though a lot of people have left and also there isn't much content on my favourite field which is aircraft. I might be making a forum taboo by doing this but am just looking for some more inspiration I suppose. Is this a faux pas? Will I be frowned upon? Kind regards Phil

Hello everyone even though i have only been on Britmodeller since June Im thinking im a bit Daft since I’m proposing a Group build. I’ve mentioned the idea a few times and there seems to be some interest in the idea. So I am placing this out here to “test the waters” so to speak? Im also hoping to do this as a fun twist on accurate modeling. I am definitely looking for a more experienced member who might be able to help host this Group Build. Im also not sure if i should just set it up for best votes and praise ? Or if I should go about getting donations ? Or prizes ? Im not sure how to even do that ? Or how to Distribute them considering im in the United states. Is the prize donation a common thing ? Anyone that can help answer these questions would really help me out. The Group build I am thinking of is based on Aircraft in Movies and Television programs. There is almost 100 Years of movies and 65+ years of television to dig around in and find something. Everyone here probably enjoys a good movie or TV program. Especially if it revolves around an aircraft ? Am I correct ? So I’m thinking of this as my Build proposal. Pick an aircraft used in a Fictional movie or TV show. The subject is open to any real type of aircraft or spacecraft. The idea being to recreate that aircraft that got you hooked on airplanes or was in a favorite movie as an adult or a child. I propose that you must be true to the movie, not the real life aircraft it was depicting. Hollywood and other studios have made a lot of money over the years by building models, movie props, and using stand-ins for our entertainment. Now its our turn to pay homage to those very movie props, models, and real aircraft stand-ins by Recreating them Faithfully. I am proposing this as an all aircraft build. There are movies about cars, non flying military, and Sci-fi so those could be there own group builds. The no Sci-fi idea doesn’t include movies based in real space. So if you want to do a Real space capsule used in a fictional movie or tv series you are welcome to do so. I would also have to rule all Documentary films out as they depict aircraft in there real settings, markings, and environments. That would be opposite to the very idea of this build. Im Familiar with quite a large library of Movies and TV shows, but freely admit I’m not Omnipotent. That being said Im quite sure there are TV shows and movies from around the world that do qualify. I ask that you point them out to me and the other future host’s (once they have joined in). You never know you might even get some of us interested in your favorite movie or tv show. Myself at first and eventually all hosts will determine if your choice falls within the overall scope of the group build proposal. Once again i don’t know everything so you may also propose ideas or amendments to the group build, If you believe i have missed something. Please include or suggest any idea’s that would improve everyones enjoyment in this group build idea. I am not against receiving help or good ideas. I have included a Prototypical Build Rules section, and a rough list of some examples of movies and TV shows. This is to give a general idea because the full list would take up way too much space. So lets see if we can get the required number by November. If not maybe we can get in for 2019 ? BUILD RULES These rules are prototypical and a summary of whats above. Hopefully they’ll be expanded to cover any questions that come up as a result of how many people show interest. 1. Any scale, any kit, scratch-built what-ifs are acceptable if they were used in a movie ( Firefox’s Mig is an Example). Absolutely all Standard build rules apply such as the 25% rule. 2. Any Real aircraft/spacecraft can be used as your subject. This includes Civilian airliners in fictional markings from movies and TV. However it must have been used in a Fictional movie or Television program. An example would be 1969's "Battle of Britain" the Special Hobby Buchon standing in for the Bf 109 or the later mark spitfires substituting as a Mk.1 Spitfire. 3. Markings must be the markings used in the film or Tv program not in real life. Yes we all know and understand Hollywood and other studios don't use or understand accurate depictions. Thats the point of this build to have fun representing a movie aircraft. You can now build a model that is inaccurate. You may use AM decals or AM parts to depict your model. You may depict the correct markings used on your model if thats how it appears in the Film/TV show. 4. Space subjects are acceptable from actual movies or Tv shows based in space. Example would be the Apollo capsules in 1969’s “Marooned” or the Mercury capsules in 1983's "The Right Stuff" 5. No Automotive, non flying military, or Sci-fi subjects please. There are enough movies in existence that those could be there own group builds. Any Film or Tv program can be used as the basis of your model. The exception being to no Documentaries. 6. If you post images, videos, quotes for reference please cite the proper copyrights or ownership of the materials. We want to stay legal and on the good side of Studio’s and the creator’s of that material. 7. Hosts and or Moderators would have to decide if any subject is acceptable/unacceptable ? If you are unsure of your choice please include a description of the Aircraft or Movie/Tv program in question and ask for a decision. Myself and eventually the other host/host’s will research and decide. Film examples These include civil, military aviation, and Space themed movies. So if the great big commercial planes are your thing join in. T.V. Examples Just to name a few from American T.V. Im not familiar with most TV Programs from outside the United States. I imagine there was at least one related to aviation. Please suggest these so Myself and eventually the other host or hosts may research the program in question and decide on its inclusion. TV program Aircraft such as used in "I dream of Jeannie", “6 million dollar man”, “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, "Call to Glory", or “China Beach” Several episodes of The Twilight zone dealt with aircraft. The B-25 in "Kings 9 is lost” is one very prominent episode. Which is based on the "Lady be Good" story. Whilst casually browsing the WWW looking at all things Fleet Air Arm at this particular time and came across images of aircraft mounted on gun turrets, novel I thought , and here's my question. How did the said warships recover their aircraft after they had done their job? Stuart

Hi all, I'm new to the group, but have looked over some of the outstanding builds that have been posted previously, and in awe at the skill levels evident! This has partly been my inspiration to have a model commissioned, by a work colleague, of the first aircraft I ever worked on in the RAF once out of training, a 54 Sqn Jaguar. I have elected to go with the 1:48 Kittyhawk kit, despite the described flaws, simply because of the availability of extra detailing sets. I've already bought the aircraft tug, avionics bay, RAF diorama set and cockpit set, and looking to get the legs, wheels, undercarriage bays, pitot and Houchin. To help the modeller, I was up with 238 Sqn at RAF Cosford last week, and took a load of detail shots of Jaguar GR1 (mainly) and associated equipment, that I thought might be a useful resource for other modellers: Jaguar GR1 and Associated Equipment Images Finally, I am trying to find images of the engine transportation trolley that carried the mobile stand out to the squadron from the bay, and an engine change kit if possible, can anybody help? Hi, I'm fairly new to modelling aircraft. I'm getting on quite good with my Mosquito in 1/48 scale and as I approach finishing the build phase of the project I'm thinking ahead to how to weather the aircraft. As the Mosquito was built chiefly out of wood would it mean that it had smoother, cleaner surfaces than aircraft made of metal with all their panelling? Let me explain what I mean: I've read articles where modellers choose to pre-shade panel lines before putting on the finished coat. Would you do this with the wings and fuselage of the Mosquito? My second question is how to put on exhaust stains on the wings that came from the engines?

Hi, Having delved into Britmodeller several times in the last five years and registered this is the first time I've actually inputted anything on the site. So it's a moment I have been looking forward to and one where I will not be disappointed as the site is fascinating and the help offered there is wonderful. Even though I have not inputted anything myself I have read other people's questions and answers and comments many times and these have helped me in my modelling. I was a regular modeller when a child and up to the age of sixteen, enjoying making chiefly Airfix aircraft and military vehicles. After a hiatus of 12 years I returned to the hobby after picking up an aircraft modelling magazine from a newsagent. The door began to open for me for a return to the hobby and soon it dawned on me how much it had grown since I'd left it. I'm still a hand brush painter and am happy with most of my modelling, but would love to do more airbrushing. Some poor experiences in the past has made me wary of airbrushing and whilst they say a good workman doesn't blame his tools, that is what I put the blame on honestly. I didn't get much joy with aerosol cans for air pressure and then bought what turned out to be an inferior compressor and airbrush made in China. However, that is behind me and I have bought a quality airbrush and compressor from Sparmax. I will use it for the first time on my next model which is going to be the Airfix 1/24 scale Spitfire V. The exterior surfaces of this type of large scale model will offer good practise for airbrushing. I like modelling chiefly aircraft of every popular scale (bar 1/144) and figures and vehicles in 1/35 scale. I also like to set some of my models in a diorama. I have visited the annual Model World Show in Telford in November four times but have never displayed. I want to continue to grow in the hobby.

Forgive my slow processing about this topic - but I have only recently realized that everyone is for the most part, building a replica of the same planes which actually existed. I have always followed the 'general rules' based upon my knowledge of the subject. However, I always took liberty with markings and camouflage. I feel that it takes away from the 'art' to keep replicating the same subject. Besides, who is to say that if I decide to build a plane with markings that has no photo history, what it actually looked like ? I would like some feedback as to the general consensus about this topic. Also, I am wondering if judges in model contests are so familiar with certain markings, that they have a good idea of what the rest of the model should look like.

Hi folks, I wondered if anyone could share their experience of making sure that an aircraft does not become a tail sitter. What does everyone use as nose weight - especially when space is a premium. Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Kris

A bit of info from the chaps at Eduard before I post a few pics. During Operation ‘Hoops’, Lt. Blythe Ritchie of 800 Sqd, gained a kill over an Fw 190 A from JG 5. It was his fifth kill, his first in the cockpit of a Hellcat, and consequently, one of the few kills by the Hellcat over the Luftwaffe. Six days later, during Operation ‘Potluck A’, Ritchie gained another aerial victory flying JV132. He attacked a formation of He 115 floatplanes, and got an individual kill, and one more shared with Lt.Cdr. Stan Ohrr. So I purchased yet another Eduard kit recently and cracked on with the dual combo Mk1 and Mk2 Hellcat (FAA) This is the completed Mk1, and I am happy with how it turned out, much better than my previous FW190. Paints used were Tamiya acrylics followed by Humbrol's gloss cote, decalfix used on the carto decals (Which were very nice i must say) and then finished off with Humbrol's matt cote. The wing nav lights are clear enamel colours as i find that works much better than the tamiya acrylic ones when using clearfix to attach. No wash was placed onto this aircraft but exhaust stains were tamiya's smoke and oils for the rust/dirt stain. Now I'm onto the Mk2 Hellcat! And one of the cockpit before sealing the sides... Feedback welcome as I'd love to hear what people think!

Morning all! I've always rather liked the Gulf War Tornado ZA465- otherwise known as Foxy Killer and so it would have been absurd if I was to pass up the opportunity to model this fabulous example of British aviation. Kit: Revell 1:72 Tornado Gr.1 (From my LMS- Mike's Models) Extras: Print Scale- Tornado Gr.1 Gulf War nose art (From Hannants) -Scratchbuilt RBF tags made from paper and FOD covers made from tissue paper. Paints Used: Vallejo: Black, White, Medium Olive, Barley Grey, Red. The "Desert Pink" colour was created from a variety of Vallejo paints mixed together.
