  1. Lufthansa Airbus A310 1:144 Revell with AA and 26Decals The A310 was a shortened version of the A300 Airbus, using the same fuselage sections, but with a new, smaller wing. Lufthansa used them from 1983 to 2005, A few are still flying, mainly as cargo haulers. This is the venerable old Revell kit of the A310, with a replacement resin nose from Braz to correct the kit part. It is a simple bit of work, and makes a huge difference to to the finished model. I also scraped and reduced the over prominent reinforcement bulge at the base of the fin, and blended it in a bit of Milliput to improve the look. Decals are silk screen printed from 26Decals and performed superbly. The cockpit and passenger windows are Authentic Airliners photo realistic decals, There is a new kit from Eastern Express, but it is pricey at over £60, so the Revell kit is still worth building if you have one in your stash. But it really does benefit from the Braz nose. Mine was kindly donated by the ever helpful Mr Stringbag, so thanks again Chris! With something else. Lets call this Frankfurt 1986! Thanks for looking, John
  2. My latest creation is a modified Revell A310 finished as SATA’s CS-TKN “Macronesia” circa 2015. SATA was the last European airline to operate the A310 in passenger service with sister aircraft CS-TGV making the final flight in October 2018. (For anyone interested there are a couple of good YouTube videos showing Golf Victor doing a low-level beat up of Ponto Delgada airport). The deficiencies of the 35 year old Revell kit are well known but with aftermarket parts and a bit of creative imagination it can be turned into a decent model. (Note that I said “decent”, not 100% accurate). The newer Eastern Express kit is ridiculously over-priced and omits some detail which Revell got right. Anyone who wants the perfect A310 will have to look to Authentic Airliners. I replaced the Revell cockpit and nose with the BraZ resin part. This is cast in two halves which makes fitting much easier since solid resin plugs are rarely the same diameter as the fuselage they’re meant to fit. Revell have made the fairings at the base of the fin far too big and boxy. It is possible to sand down and re-shape them as @Viking showed with his beautiful Lufthansa model but I opted to replace the whole fin with one from a Revell A330 which is earmarked for conversion to a -200. While I had the A330 to hand I used it as a pattern to improve the sealing plates for the stabilisers which are like nothing that Airbus ever produced. I also removed the tail bumper and filled the many sink marks on the wings and stabs before re-scribing the detail. The engines are BraZ PW4000s. These were a little disappointing with the front sections larger than the nacelles which in turn had a slight “pincushion” shape. Milliput and determination got me there in the end and they will have to suffice unless and until Sergey Druz turns his attention to the A310! I used the Extra Tech p/e set to add a bit of bling mainly around the undercarriage. Paint is Halfords Appliance Gloss White and Holts HL Grey 01 with Tamiya and Revell metallics. The original plan was to finish the model in Tarom livery as part of my European flag carriers project but accuracy issues with the Nazca decals led to a last minute change of plan. The SATA decals are by Two Six and are excellent. I was a little concerned about how the tail decal would fit the A330 fin but it worked well with only minimal touching up (Revell Aqua 54 plus a little white). I added an Authentic Airliners windscreen, Flightpath coroguard and a few detail decals from the spares box. Although it was spread over nearly two years this was an enjoyable project and I have tentative plans to do a second A310 with GE engines. I just need to find another Revell A330 fin! Thanks for looking and constructive criticism is always welcome. Dave G
  3. I am currently working on a bunch of different airliners, among those, the good old Revell A310 kit and the Airfix rerelease of the classic Concorde "Prototype", are now finished and ready for the RFI. I built 5 of Revell's A310 kits so far and despite its simplicity and some errors it still builds into a nice replica with some effort.I really like this kit. The main changes I did were the reshaping of the nose section, creating winglets and converting the engines for the -300. The kit I had on hand was the earlier -200 version and Revell also did never change the engines .The provided engines are good for some -200 such as the Lufthansa or KLM types. As the plastic is very thick, the conversion of the engines was fairly easy, flattening the undersides of the cowls and sanding out the intakes and by glueing a piece of plasticard in front, creating a new seamless intake ring. Next time though,I might insert also a plastic tube as inlet as I find it a bit too wide now as it is but its ok so far. The exhaust cone was sawed out, glued to a piece of plasticard and inserted in the hotsection. The winglets are scratchbuilt out of plasticard as well. The decals come from 8A decs. and are very nicely printed and easy to apply. Until I found them on their website,I never heard of that airline before but was attracted by its colorful livery. Air Paradise was based at Denpasar airport in Bali and operated from 2002 -2005 when it ceased operations after the 2005 terrorist attacks in Bali. Amongst Airbus A300-600s and a single Boeing 737-800,the airline had 2 A310-300s in service. Cheers Alex
  4. Bought Revells Balair CTA a310 kit (with the yellow wings) with the intention of doing it with the decals provided however I've noticed the kit comes with GE engines rather than PWs that its meant to have. I have decided to crack on and do it in alternative colours of siberian airlines I've filled the windows anyway but i did note how small they looked, obviously another error. lots of excess plastic but the fuselage halves went together better than I thought with the exception of one small section on the base of the aircraft cockpit window nicely sealed also started with the wing section. Firstly i cut a hole just big enough to fit a stand rather than glue the stand directly onto the surface when completed. also as the plane is in flight i needed to seal the undercarriage doors, there is only pieces 2 thirds of the gap so the rest has to be filled. to do so i glued spare plastic to the inside to help with that process fuselage problem area filled and sanded cleaned up this area too before gluing to fuselage now onto fitting the wings to the fuselage plastic now cleaned up and polished (horizontal stabilizers not glued - just a lovely fit) and now primed. Wing tip fences to be added later as well as stabs and engines
