This is my build of the Whirlybirds (ex Maintrack) 1/72 Folland Midge which was built for a GB on UAMF. I'm posting here has as I followed the discussions on BM about what was Nordic Blue. The kits is mastered from the old Matchbox kit and initially look a simple build with few parts, however I found the shapes to be annoying off, mainly caused by the canopy which contained the radio equipment (?) bay with its little windows, but was too long causing the nose to be too short. The nose needing fattening, the tail narrowing and the shoulders recontouring. The canopy is still too wide but I drew the line at that point. Scroll down to see what lies beneath. As to Nordic Blue, a 50/50ish mix of Hu15 Midnight Blue and Hu130 Satin White looked good enough to me. A fellow modeller cut some masks for the codes for me.

OK - I finaly decided on my entry: I already prepared the vacuformed parts but did nothing more so far. Here is a look inside the box: The kit comes with vacuformed, resin and white metal parts and decals (inside the zip lock with the refelction). Rene

Lightning T.5, 226 OCU / 145 Sqn RAF Coltishall, 1968 Well this was a very different experience from building the new Airfix Lightning. It’s the Whirlykits resin T5 – wanted to get it finished before the Sword kit appears or it would have stayed in the box forever. Actually it’s not a bad kit at all. Quite usable cockpit interior, deep air intake with visible engine compressor face, good exhausts, and white metal undercarriage (very necessary – it weighs a ton). Weak points were the vac-formed canopy (too thin and framing too heavy), the tailplane (mine was so thin that I didn’t use it and scratched some replacements from plasticard) and the inevitable warping of parts (but to be fair it all straightened out with hot water treatment). Finish is my usual Alclad Polished Aluminium over polished Halfords Grey Primer, panels sprayed in silver-grey and light grey, panel lines emphasised with a pencil, and several brushed coats of Klear. I had a spare decal sheet from an Airfix F.2A which was really helpful for roundels, walkway lines, stencils, etc. Squadron marks were from Model Alliance (nose bars), and a combination of Xtradecal and Modeldecals for the fin badge.
