1/12 Austin A35 van 'Watch The Birdie'
spruecutter posted a topic in Ready For Inspection - Vehicles
Hi everyone Each year I like to do a build for Nick Allen's IPMS 'Beyond The Box' SIG. The idea behind the SIG is to take a standard kit and turn it into something a bit different. We usually work to a theme - this year's was A Grand Day Out. Quite often we will use one of the Airfix 'Aardman' kits - either Wallace & Gromit or Shaun The Sheep, although they are becoming harder to get hold of. Anyway, for my build I decided to model the A35 as a photographer's van trading under the name of 'Watch The Birdie'. Chromework on the radiator done using Molotow Chrome. It gives a very nice shine but it's softer than Alclad Chrome. I used some 3D printed parts from Shapeways to replace the windscreen wipers and add the A35 badge. The replacement door handles were also 3D printed. Finally, the full scenario. Wallace is posing for photographs with his new bride, Gwendoline, and two wedding guests. The shot is ruined by Timmy the sheep wandering in and distracting the bride. She's looking at the viewer as if to say "What's going on?!" Gwendoline is totally scratch built - the only commercial item I used was a resin copy of Wallace's head. I also scratch built the bellows camera. I will bring the model to the Nationals at Telford. It will be on the Beyond The Box stand - just in front of the Airfix stand. Cheers Richard C- 24 replies

I was looking for an 'easy build' as a break from my Memphis Belle and recent Valoms and my thoughtful daughters provided a solution as a birthday present, a 1/12 (or 1/8th?) Airfix (Nr. 51101) 1999 classic. The intention was a build for fun (WiP here). Built almost OOB but, at Procopius' suggestion (thanks PC) also as a sort of 'tongue in cheek' BoB tribute. Any concerns over scheme authenticity were explained by Procopius: "...this scheme was worn for a short period in 1940 by the Royal Cartoon Auxiliary Air Force's 1567 (Anthropomorphic Dog) Flight." Thanks PC. Here is the finished article: The build took over from the Belle and various problems reduced the fun, a bit, mainly the plastic. Nigel H thinks it's probably ABS; it's certainly heavy and very shiny leading to all sorts of adhesion problems until I started sanding to remove the gloss / oil. A few non-OOB changes: primed with Vallejo acrylic grey which tried its best but didn't bite into the plastic VMA 'Sky' (71.103) and DE (71.029) airbrushed and H30 DG hand brushed. AK True Metal gunmetal for the 'porridge cannon' and aluminium for its mount. Prop tips Liquitex marker pen. Klear coated prior to transfers and VMA matt coat after. Gromit initially painted with supplied 'Super Acrylic' but later gave up and used Humbrol enamel 61+130 50/50. Helmet and jacket H10 Acrylic with Humbrol filler 'sheepskin'. Custom transfers for the 'Preston kill awards' and others from my limited stash Porridge added (water, no salt, bit of sugar - actually it's a cotton bud) Five minute epoxy used in place of the supplied poly cement. The WiP was one of our usual joint efforts and, I think, is both entertaining and educational - this build certainly taught me a few lessons! Hope you like it but remember, it's a fun build of something that doesn't actually exist so be nice guys please!

For a few years now I have belonged to the Beyond the Box SIG. The idea behind the group is to let the imagination run free and do some serious kit bashing, more often than not using the 1/12 scale Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep kits produced by Airfix. The theme for this year's Nationals is Space - so I thought I would take the opportunity to post my recently completed Space build here. The rocket is scratch built from plastic card and finished off with brass model engineering rivets. The rocket motors used to be fluorescent lamp holders in my aquarium. Tamiya Fine Surface Primer took care of the white (it's such a great product). An overview of the completed model - some 50cm high! The gantry was adapted from a toy crane that got broken. A close up of the intrepid astronauts - space suits courtesy of Das modelling clay The plucky inventor - still smiling after a double arm amputation, thumb surgery and a new jumper knitted from Milliput. A close up of the promotional material - knocked up in Powerpoint The model will be displayed on the Beyond the Box stand at the Nationals - the table is close to the Airfix stand in Hall 1. All the best Richard C PS I do produce serious models too from time to time
