  1. Ok, I know I'm a latecomer to this but I'll try to get at least one build done in time I've chosen the Airfix 1/72 DH Vampire T.11. Made a quick start cleaning up some mould seams with parts still on the sprue and a base coat of Tamiya Rubber Black on the relevant areas (interior etc.) I reckon a drybrush of Nato Black should pop the detail out.
  2. Hello glue-sniffers and ABS addicts. This thread is a split from http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234999580-airfix-vampire-t11-x-2/ Images are spoiler tagged for ease of page loading. If you have any issues with the photos, blame RobG. If you have any issues with the model, don't blame me. If you would like a custom-built version for your mantelpiece then dream on. I haven't built a model for probably 18 years, so I began with a pre-emptive strike on the box.
  3. Pilot Replicas is to release a 1/48th de Havilland DH.100 Vampire FB.50/ J28B kit - ref. 48-A-007 Source: https://www.facebook.com/largescalemodeller/photos/a.459679464104014.1073741828.450176221721005/1054354864636468/?type=3&theater Box art V.P.
  4. "I say chaps, it's one of those aeroplanes without a propellor!" Here it is at last, the Xtrakit 1/72 Vampire mk 5. Superb kit and everything fits - apart from the larger parts like the nose, which is a mare! Finish is all Xtracrylix and the decals are stock kit. I made a few mistakes with this one, worst of all not putting weight in the nose, hence the strut under the fuselage - everything needed sanding gently after fixing this so all the wheels touched the ground! Despite my best efforts some overspray got into the canopy as well. It's also a repaint, I did an earlier hatchet job on it and used the wrong grey. Anything other than dark sea grey does not look right! Don't think I'll do another Xtrakit, they are very demanding, building them is more like surgery than assembly. Think I'll do something basic next. (Edited for greeny pics...)
  5. Good afternoon all I was trawling through this group build thread when I had something niggling in the back of my mind. You know the feeling when you should be doing something but cant for the life of me remember what? Well that was me until I came across the participation list and realized that I had put my name down! So quite unprepared I trawled through the stash and came up with this little blighter as a quick build entry It will be straight out of the box but not sure what to finish it as. Going with my themes it should be Royal Naval so that would mean a T22, which is more or less identical to a T11, with the exception of Royal Navy on the side. Which version of a T22 I'm not sure yet but I have plenty of time to decide. First up was to build the cockpit. I am using Vallejo acrylics for this which is a first for me and we'll see how they go. Painted black and ready for the close out I added some tape harnesses and a wire ejection seat handle to add a little interest, but before the close out we don't want a tail sitter so the nose was stuffed with a lead weight and white glue mix to prevent that rattle And then the close up So that's the progress so far. I don't expect this to be a drawn out affair. My Cormorant build will be stalled for a week or so, so I won't have a lot else to progress. Until next time Cheers now Bob
  6. Another kit from the shelf of doom finished for the current KUTA group build. This sad beastie has been hanging around for awhile. I made a start, but then managed to lose the canopy (Airfix kindly sent another but it took awhile to get here) and I felt like I made a bit of a botch with the intakes. Whatever, its languished on the shelf for over 2 years. When I took it out to have a look I realised it wasn't actually too far from being finished. Brush painted with Tamiya acrylics and finished as out of the box as WZ507 operated by the Vampire Preservation Group. Build thread can be found here. Thanks for looking.
  7. Hello All, Just finished this one at the weekend. I used Revell Fluorescent Orange and Silver (both acrylic and brushed) over a rattle can white acrylic undercoat. The orange looks more like luminous pink in real life and the camera struggles to photograph it well. A very nice kit that only took a few sessions to build and paint. High point: the cockpit hood; low point: the pitot tube moulded onto the port fin, which finally broke off during decalling... Thanks for looking, Adrian
  8. Just a quick build of the great Starter Kit from Airfix of the de Havilland Vampire T.11, Royal New Zealand Air Force No.14 Squadron. Used the seatbelts and 'D' rings from the Eduard etch set. Alclad and Vallejo paints. Thanks for looking Kirk
  9. Hi Everyone, Here are some of my photos from the Eastbourne airshow, I've tried to pick my favourites out of the almost 1,000 photos I took, but still this is going to be very photo heavy. If you want to view the full 135 photos, they are in an album on my facebook, linked here : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.488656594634727.1073741851.100004711722357&type=1&l=0724244a56 Anyway lets kick off the photos, I hope you like them. I'm trying to persuade my missus to let me go to either Bournemouth or Shoreham airshow (preferably Bournemouth) this weekend. Chinook Jet Provost Breitling Wingwalkers Typhoon Spitfire MiG-15 Grob Tutor Bulldog Sea King Eastbourne's Tamar class Lifeboat (At High Speed) Hawk T.2 Blenheim Norwegian Vampires P-51 Mustang "Ferocious Frankie" Vulcan XH558 Dakota Patrouille Reva The Blades Red Arrows Anyway, thats all of the photos I'm going to post. You can view the rest on the facebook link at the top. These photos were all taken with a Canon EOS 20D DSLR body with a 100 - 400 mm canon lens stuck on the front of it. Boy was that heavy without a tripod, but made life easier when tracking the planes. They have all been edited to improve colour balance etc. Please let me know what you think. All the best, Rick
  10. The de Havilland Vampire WZ507 is well known to the British air show scene, a rare cold war jet fighter preserved and flown by the Vampire Preservation Group, based at North Weald airfield. This interactive cockpit panorama has been created for the Vampire website - it's enormously expensive to keep such an old warbird flying, and the panorama is meant to attract visitors to the Vampire website, join their Supporter's Club, or even become shareholders. Click on the photo below to open the panorama, and switch to full screen mode! If you are interested in future aircraft panoramas, please sign up to my mailing list! A bit more about the panorama can be found here. Next to come are a Tiger Moth, and complete virtual tour of one of the iconic WWII bombers. If you can think of an aircraft that could benefit from such work, please let me know!
  11. In the 1960s (sorry I cant be more specific on the timeframe) my Grandfather was based in Singapore at Tengah with 60 Squadron RAF. He was a photographer and used to fly in the Vampire T.11 to take photos the planes in formation. For Christmas Id like to present him with a diorama with a Vampire and T.11 side by side. I wonder if anyone can give me an idea of what colour scheme to paint the T11? Would it have had the day-glo orange scheme or the yellow bands? I have tried to find this out but have not found any photographs from Singapore in this time period of a T11, only normal Vampires. A photograph or information on this would be great. Im not looking for 100% accuracy so any pointers, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Finally finished a model! Started this 1/48th Trumpeter de Havilland Vampire FB.9 on Boxing Day, completed yesterday which is a record for me, I just wanted a straightforward kit to put together as everything I touch seems to take forever, usually ending up on the shelf of shame. She is finished in Royal Air Force high-speed silver and marked as a Vampire FB.5 serial WA344 which was the very first jet plane that my father flew on 17th October 1951 with 102 FRS (Flying Refresher School), North Luffenham. Web sources state that WA344 entered service in February 1951 and was scrapped in November 1957 after serving with several squadrons in Germany. So, on to the photos. A nice kit which goes together very easily. I attached the tail booms last and I admit the join could be better! I have built WA344 in a standard Royal Air Force silver colour scheme (I think this is 'high speed silver') and I decided to try Humbrol 11 silver which went over a coat of Halfords grey primer quite well. The Flying Refresher Schools had only just been formed to select and prepare pilots for possible service in Korea so I am sure that many aircraft carried no codes or special markings. I do have my father's log book and he only recorded aircraft serials if there was no code available. The nickname for the Vampire was the 'spider crab' and this view shows why this was. Compared to the Hawker Tempest the Vampire sat very close to the ground. Another view from the top: Despite weighting the nose she is still a tail-sitter, hence the makeshift transparent plastic support: I know this kit really got a drubbing on BM when it was released and I can certainly tell that the nose isn't right, I think the wing tips might need correction as well. I built this from the FB.9 boxing however I understand that it is missing an asymmetrical wing root so effectively it is an FB.5 and I have marked it as such. However, for all the accuracy issues, the kit went together very easily, the decals applied well, and this will fill a small space in a display cabinet at home. I do have a Classic Airframes Vampire FB.5 in the stash and I got that out for a look, maybe that needs to be started soon... Michael
  13. Only one more build till my dozen and I can stop bothering everyone with my counting. Modelling time was getting short after my IDF Spitfire, so I decided to bang out a no-nonsense, OOB build of a shake and bake kit with no added extras that I could do as quickly as possible. The new mold Airfix Vampire seemed to fit the bill. In this case, although spread out over two weeks, time expended could certainly fill a long weekend for me. The only thing to slow me down (related to modelling), was the application of the Humbrol acrylic 205 Fluorescent orange, which had to be spayed on in multiple very thin coats. Done as a reasonably clean bird, and here she is, with a friend in the last picture which is my Build 2 from last year, the Airfix Gnat. You've seen billions of these things on here, so maybe for my build 12, I'll find something a bit more esoteric, and in 1/72nd scale of course. Like my old eyes aren't complaining or anything. So check her out.. go ho hum, and move on to something more interesting. Like beer. 14. The "Vampire over the Northern skies" edition built as a Swedish J 28B from F 11 wing. Built mostly OOB apart from the intakes that were slightly modified. Since they are corrected in the F.3 version, this would be a better model for a Swedish one, but was not available when I started this build. Some decals were replaced, the national insignias were too dark blue, and the griffin at the nose that should be on a gold background, not yellow. A nice kit, fit is good and the panel lines are not too obvious - although they of course are too visible since they are almost invisible on the real thing. An enjoyable and pretty easy build, a model that i definitely recommended for all us twin-boom lovers! :-)
  15. With all this Airfix 2013 kerfuffle going on and the forthcoming Vampire kit, I'm reminded of airshows when the Vintage Pair were around. I distinctly remember them screaming around the sky really close to each other and so different to most of the other 'modern' stuff. Inspired by these memories, I'm mentally prepping a Vintage Pair dio (perhaps) of the new Vampire & a Meteor. Here's where I could do with your help, fellow BMers. I've got an old Matchbox NF xx kit that I could use, but was keeping to do a Fradu TT20 tug. Is there a bespoke T7 kit available or is the Matchbox kit 'convertible'. Something to whet the appetite...
  16. Here's a few pics of my completed Vampire; brush-painted and finished by hand...I'm quite pleased with how it has turned out. It's only my 4th build. I will take a few more photos of the Vampire tomorrow:
  17. I have had a bit of a break from modelling, but thought It was time to have a go at another kit; I have two kits that I bought last year but haven't found time to start yet. This time, I will be building the De Havilland Vampire T.11 from Airfix: I have read good things about this kit, and seen some great results on forums so far. I'm looking forward to building it. The kit has 3 main sprues and a clear sprue: The instructions and decal sheet: As with my other builds, I will be doing things by hand, all brush-painted and finished manually. I will be making the kit in the Vampire Preservation Group colours; the yellow training scheme as on the box artwork. Such a great-looking aircraft, I hope I can see it someday at an airshow. OK, on with the build...first stage is the cockpit...
  18. Took these at the Fliegerflab Museum. Dubendorf, last summer. I thought they might be of interest, given recent Vampire chat.
  19. Good afternoon, This week I took the opportunity to take some pictures of the finished model. I did it for the Training type GB. Initially, I wasn't sure about which version to do. After a while, I decided to do the Vampire Preservation Group aircraft, since it is a scheme I don't have in my collection. The HSS/Dayglo Orange will be used for the Gnat and Gannet. The kit is really nice. The panel lines may be a bit on the heavy side, but airfix is moving in the right direction, as they get smaller every model. The build itself was very straightforward, I just needed some force to bring the wing panel flush with the intake grill part. And I needed to cut away a small part of the lower wing, so that the gear legs can be attached at the end. The seats have been improved with some small bits and belts to make it look more realistic. Otherwise, no aftermarket parts used for this model. Even the decals are from the box. Colour is tamiya flat alu, yellow is xtracolour RAF trainer yellow, over a white primer. All in all, a very nice kit from Airfix! Thanks for watching! Alex
  20. Which single seat DeHaviland Vampires were equipped with ejection seats? And which seat?
  21. Ladies and gentlemen, I have started the Airfix kit. As hoped, it's better than the Harrier GR.7, at least, it goes without filler so far. Firstly, the proof of the beginning: I will build the version with the yellow bands, as I already planned a Gannet and the Gnat with the orange panels. By the way, is it possible to build the preservation group version just without the website on the boom? Or is this a fictional paint scheme? I started with the intake, done with Revell Aluminium acrylics, brush painted. It looks OK so far. The fan just needs a bit of washing, just in case. Next job are the seats. I just added some small parts, modeled the parachute cover(?) on top with some Tamiya putty, and added a wire for the ejection handle. Photo is slightly out of focus, but you get the idea, I hope. Oh, and no pilots. Tonight, I airbrushed the black interiour parts, and tomorrow they will get the drybrushing. So far a really nice kit! Alex
  22. Sorry folks, I hesitate to burden you with yet another T.11 thread but I really do like this kit so couldn't resist! As one with a special interest in T.11s I was over the moon to see this released by Airfix and it fitted with a modelling 'theme' I had on the go perfectly. That theme is to built the aircraft used by 233 OCU at RAF Pembrey during the 1950s. Types on my list are Tempest TT.5, Mosquito TT.35, Meteor F.8, Vampire FB.5, Vampire T.11 and Hunter F.1. I've done the Hunter and Tempest so with Airfix' timely release I'm starting the T.11. Progress will be slow (all my models are!) but I started with the seats. I have in mind that the model will be placed on the ground with hood open and with the instructor already strapped in. He's carefully watching the pupil pilot about to climb in. With the hood open I will really need to add some detail to the interior. The Airfix seats are a pretty good shape but are devoid of any details. I have always been unimpressed with aftermarket seats in my area of interest so decided to have a crack at adding detail to the Airfix kit seats myself. So, this is the starting point, reasonable overall shape but with no sticky out bits at all! I added the drogue gun, BTRU, scissor shackle, drogue sleeve, seat cushion, back pad, parachute and seat harnesses, firing handle, height adjustment handle etc. from plastic strip, rod, wire and copper sheet... So that's the unoccupied pupil's seat. The instructor's seat will be occupied but I found the kit pilots to be a little on the large side. Instead I used a figure from an Airfix Hunter which I modified to better represent a pilot wearing a Mk.1 bone-dome and G-Type flying helmet. I modified his legs to fit the Vampire and turned his head to a more natural looking angle - glaring at his pupil! His seat has the same detail added to the top parts but will only have straps added to the rest once the pilot has been installed... I found the copper made it difficult to easily see how the seat was looking so I gave the seat a light spray with Halfords primer. I know from experience that painting directly onto the copper means it rubs off easily so the primer will help that as well. So this is where things stand at the moment (with a bit of scrap plastic added to make holding while painting easier)... Needs a bit of fettling and smoothing in certain areas then it's on with some paint before moving on to the rest of the cockpit. The firing handles look a little thick now there's primer on them, but they'll just have to do - my eyesight can't stand much more of this! Cheers, Mark
  23. De Havilland Vampire T.II WZ584 (K) Central Air Traffic Control School RAF Shawbury 1970 Kit: Airfix A0258 Scale: 1:72 Decals: Xtradecal X72-172 Paint: Citadel Mithril Silver Build thread: HERE
  24. Hello all, Here is my current "topic" on my desk. The Airfix Vampire is quite good kit. Only the fitting of centre section with two fuselage beams is not optimal. The rest seems to be OK, but I can not judge it 100% because I used a superglue for the whole kit. It means only glue and put. No corrections after possible. Having very nice Xtradecal sheet, I spend a long time to consider the camouflage finish. I decided to make a Lebanone or RAN plane and I will make another Vampire in Chillese marking in more precise way, than this first kit. May be I will also use the Pavla cockpit for it. Well, as I glued the underwings drop tanks, It seems I am forced to do the RAN plane, because I found the Lebanesse particular plane photo without it. Well, I believe, Lebanonese Vampires had drop tanks, but the photo .... As I use the water based colour, the primer cote (Lifecolor) is needed at first At the end, I sprayed the kit with Silver colour, but it is not current status, because I was not satisfied with that silver shade. So, actually I have the model oversprayed using mix silver and small amount of white, which makes little bit grey tone.
