Well, I finally started to cut and fill plastic on the the Valom 1/72 D.H. 91 Albatros kit yesterday. My intention is to build it as one of the two mailplanes used by the RAF, in this case B-JW (earlier as one of the prototypes, E.3). At first, I thought this airframe would still have the split flaps of the two mailplanes (E.3 and G-AEVV) even after its partial reconstruction following a broken back accident that involved reconfiguration of the rear wing fillets to the airliner form. Now, I'm not so sure after peering at the various in-flight photos of B-JW. There is a hint of a change in tone of the upper surface colours where there could be a slotted flap, and the underside view shows the flap with five hinge points. Does anyone know, or have an opinion about whether these are the original split form or the later slotted version? I'll get some photos posted up at some point soon. Cheers, GrahamB

And finally, here she is... McDonnell F-101A Voodoo 54-1475 81st TFW Bentwaters Suffolk 1965 Basically I had Microscale decals & this airframe appears in a couple of books 54-1475 shown as taken in March 31st 1966 by Norman taylor as seen in the Osprey book & the Detail & Scale book. The photos show it parked up after being returned back to Shaw AFB & in the photo's there's a fire extinguisher & ladders placed on the side of the aircraft. Microscale provide decals for the undercarriage doors for 54-1475 as well, plus I may have used artistic licence with the wing tip tricolors. It's possible these markings were removed before it was transferred to Shaw AFB after being at Bentwaters. Valom kit - 1/72 - used the "Nuclear Bomber" boxing along with leftover parts from a previous attempt that mostly went in the bin. Pavla 1/72 ejection seat. Hasegawa front windsceen as it's more representative of the real thing than the Valom part. A few other adjustments with the help & advice of bentwaters81tfw Microscale 72-223 decal sheet plus a few stencils from the kit sheet. Also scratch built a fire extinguisher (used main wheels from a very old charity shop 1/72 Starfighter) & built up the Flightpath etch flight ladder, to echo the photos in the book. Mustn't forget the paint - in order of application; Mig One Shot grey. Ammo MiG Zinc Chromate Green FS34151 for the wheel bays. Vallejo Metal Color White metal 77.706 all over the airframe. Masked the white metal for the darker areas & the exhaust shielding. Vallejo Metal Color Jet Exhaust 77.713 Jet Exhaust with some matt black misted over. Vallejo Metal Color Duralumin 77.702 various panels around the rear fuselage. 77.701 Aluminium for the forward fuselage. 77.703 Dark Aluminium misted on for the wing centre sections. Wing tips mixed up the blue to match the decal colour & used Ammo Mig for the yellow & red. Glossed over with Klear. Here's the build thread in the Century Fighters group build... Vampire, Venom, Hunter, Canberra--are all iconic names of the postwar British aircraft industry. The Valetta is not among them. Not that it was a bad aircraft. On the contrary, it was quite serviceable, and by British standards--successful--with over 260 built for the RAF. Moreover, it was ready for service when the UK needed to replace (almost) all its war-weary Dakotas and prepare for the new burdens heralded by "Winds of Change." My little vignette is set in Aden during winter 1960, with an aircraft just released from the Ferry Service Squadron "working up" for operations with newly re-activated 233 squadron. There's a small conversation going on toward the back of the aircraft between an Army officer (with beret) and an RAF NCO. It's slightly weathered, but not overly much. WD159 had just been rebuilt by Vickers in '57, and assigned to a ferry unit afterwards, so it wasn't too beaten up from pictures I've seen of the actual aircraft in Yemen. The Valom kit needs some minor fixes, and could do with more detailed instructions; but otherwise it's designed for a more mainstream audience. I used Polly-S acrylics for the white upper part and a mix of Vallejo metallics (silver, white aluminum, and aluminum) for the painted silver portions. The tires I painted in Vallejo black-gray, and used light brown pastel to simulate the dust on the treads. -
Hello all Built in parallel with the An-2 here is my latest out of the shed, the Valom B-45A Tornado made completely OOB. I grew up in a small village a few miles from RAF Sculthorpe so have always fancied making one of these. My dad talked about often seeing them in the circuit, including those with RAF markings. The plastic and resin mouldings are crisp and nicely detailed and there’s a nice little fret of etch for the finer detailed parts. I chose to finish it in the markings of the 84th BS (47th BG) circa 1952. (According to the kit instructions) Everything is fine until you try to put it together as pretty well all the parts need reshaping to make them fit. There’s also quite a mis mould between the wing attachment points on the fuselage halves resulting in one wing appearing lower than the other. The internals are highly detailed but disappear when the fuselage is closed up which is a shame. The resin engine parts are smaller than the points they attach to resulting in big steps. In short, a bit of a fight to get it together, but hey, that’s what short run modelling is all about. Lots of adjustment, filling and sanding. The end result doesn’t look too bad I think. Maybe the darker panels are a bit too dark. So here it is. Pete Thanks for looking Pete -
I bought this kit a few months ago my local model shop in Ashby De La Zouch. I haven't built a Valom kit before and hadn't built a Bristol Bombay as a kid so I thought this would be an interesting plane to do. Other kits have since got in the way but this one is perfect for this MTO GB. Here are some photos of what you get in the box Instructions Nice colour painting instructions The instructions are quite full on... Lots of parts and not much showing you how they go together The bag of bits Nice looking decals PE Resin engines and exhausts Clear parts I couldn't find a mask set online so I'll do this one myself. Nicely detailed parts with recessed panel lines and raised lines where necessary More tomorrow when the painting and gluing starts.... -
Here's my attempt at the Valom RB-45, in its Korean War boxing. The model is about 80% out of the box, the other 20% is filler, elbow grease and blood - those exhaust nibs are sharp as needles! The fit is pretty awful, the wing to fuselage joints being the worst as they are not planar. No matter how much trimming and dry fitting I did, I couldn't get a decent abutment so there's a ton of filler in there. Thankfully it blended out quite nicely and the black scheme is very forgiving. The kit decals were excellent though. I do like the look of the Tornado, there is something pleasing about it. It's also a surprisingly large aircraft, being about the size of a B-17, part of the reason I couldn't get it all in focus. I have another kit but as the only other scheme available is natural metal I'll need to be prepared for even more surface preparations. Maybe in a few years when I've forgotten all the bad memories... Thanks for looking! Mike

Hi Comrades! Here is my Valom's Wellesley. Not a simple kit to build. Additions-resin engine, masks for canopies. All others - scratch built - 4 new small windows in the fuselage, wheel wells structure, interior details aft of pilots headrest etc. The build is here Hope, you like it! -
Hi comrades! My next build is Vickers Wellesley from start of WWII in Africa (from the boxart). The build will be OOB with some scratch additions. So far, I opened 4 windows in forward fuselage. Also I'm planning to enhance the wheel wells and the pilot headrest - those areas are oversimplified in the kit. So, any informative images will be of great help. Unfortunately, in the Warpaint book on Wellesley those areas are not described... Also, any building tips or known inaccuracies of the kit will be of great help. Thanks in advance ! Start of a build of a kit from a new to me company Valom from the Czech Republic. Its a short run low pressure injection moulded kit which I think means the moulds are made from a metal other than the tool steel used by the big companies. I have never built a short run kit before and I admit I was a bit worried about what I would get in the box but with the encouragement of a few other modellers particulary General Melchett I took the plunge and ordered from Oxonian Plastics. IMG_20191207_150202911 by Stuart, on Flickr When I opened the box I was pleasantly surprised there is not a lot of flash and a quick measure up showed the fuselage and wing sections are almost an exact match that wont take much filing and fitting. The engine castings are resin mouldings and are a lovely model of the original Bristol Peggy engines. The fuselage moulding is pretty thick and the plastic is a soft grade that doesnt cut very easily cutting the slots took a lot of time and the glazing was a bit crap. Reasonably happy with the way this one has turned out, black does hide a multitude of sins :-). This aircraft was used on the "Mutton" operations to drop LAMs (Long Aerial Mines) on the German bomber streams. (http://codenames.info/operation/mutton-i/) The kit itself goes together very well (not like their Hampden!) the only problem really is the brittle plastic which makes the wheel struts a nightmare to work with. If I had any I would have replaced it with some aerofoil strut. The real aircraft probably did not carry any guns in the turrets, but I left mine in. The decals are rather resistant to setting agents. I had to reduce the size of the mouth, its far to long. Even now it is still to long, it should stop before the eyes in the one photo I have seen of the aircraft. I replaced the markings on the fins as the kit ones were far to big. Comments/questions welcome. Tim
