The F-14 is close to my favourite post war jet so when Tamiya released this I had to have it. It's a bit of pity they've done the real early A as I actually prefer the late A's and B's. But as I don't have a Hi Viz F-14 in my collection, and it's by Tamiya I figured I may as well build this as close to from the box as I can. Lets see if it lives up to the hype. I'm going for the VF-41 option at this stage , using aftermarket seats . The wheels are late wheels so I don't think they are correct. I'll check the kit ones out and see what they look like. About 4 hours work and some of the major sub assemblies are done. So far everything fits perfectly, and I mean perfectly. I've found if it doesn't fit I've not cleaned up a sprue gate properly. Some parts I haven't even bother to glue as they just click in, Or when I have used glue I've not bothered to glue the entire length of the join, just tacked it in a few places. I have a small seam to fill on the leading edge of the wing gloves where the upper and lower fuselage meets.
Hey everyone, Here's a recent completion from me for the Tomcat II GB. The aim was to finish her as Fast Eagle 107, just as she landed after shooting down an Su-22.I still have to add two Phoenix missiles but am calling her done. You can read the WIP build here but in summary; Kit: 1/72 Hobby Boss F-14A Paint: Brush painted with Revell Acrylics, Flory Models Wash Decals: From kit Extras: Hasegawa pilots from pilot set. Close up of the crew.. Pylons for the fuel tanks were scratched... Thanks for looking! Dermot
Hi everyone, This is my entry for the GB, from Hobby Boss in 1/72. Some references....not all relevant to this build but good reads nonetheless. This will be a build of a VF-41 'Black Aces' Tomcat from the Gulf of Sidra incident in 1981. (Source: Wikipedia commons; public domain) It probably won't be the most colourful build on this GB (as she's mostly grey) but an eventful story and one that's worth remembering I think. Good luck with your own builds! Dermot
Kit - Hobbyboss 1:72 Paint - Tamiya acrylics, Tamiya, Humbrol & Xtracolour enamels. Decals - Kit Extras - None Grumman F-14A Tomcat VF-41 'Black Aces' Photocall, NAS Oceana mid 1978. Not my best build by a long way, but very enjoyable none the less. IMHO a great little kit and well worth every penny. Good points - Price, excellent fit, good detail, you can build it as I have with the wings in the 'oversweep' position (not too many kits give you that option), very good decal choice and superbly packaged. Bad points, very soft plastic reminiscent of old Heller kits, panel lines so fine that they seem to disappear under two coats of paint !! - but that was probably 'user error'. Right from the start I was looking to build it completely 'naked' no pylons, no tanks, all buttoned-up and immaculate - there's a few photos on t'interweb from the Photocall in '78 just before the squadron embarked on USS Nimitz for the first cruise with the brand new F-14's, and they are spotless !! Great wee project, highly recommended. Thanks for taking the time to look, as ever all comments, criticism, questions and suggestions are welcome. AFN Ian
