  1. Here she is, big and bold.... Built from the box, with only Brass U/C legs added as she is a heavy model. I was thinking of some weathering, but concluded that as this was a post German Surrender repaint the airframe would have been quite clean. You will notice some transfer damage: the Airfix transfers had not aged well, especially the big ones. Despite Microset they cracked in places. Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib MP197 of 245 (Northern Rhodesia) Sqn RAF. The blue and white tail band and white propeller base and blue spinner was applied in Early summer 1945, before the Squadron was disbanded in Germany on August 10, 1945. I also like the mouth around the radiator. MP197 was the usual mount of F/L Harrison Taylor 'Moose' Mossip DFC RCAF until he was killed on 7 March 1945. 'Moose' was flying JP936 and during an attack on a train near Amden his aircraft hit high-tension cables and he was killed. MP197 then became the personal aircraft of 245's CO, S/L Tony Zweigbergk. The full build story is here:
  2. I've had this kit since it was released back in 2014, suddenly inspired by reading John Golley's book "The Day of the Typhoon" ( ISBN 0-85059-758-7) I pulled it from the stash and started... The. book covers 245 Squadron when based at Holmsley South, just of the A35 north of Highcliff and only 25 miles from home, through their arrival at airfield B5 at Le Fresne Camilly just inland from Juno Beach a few days after D Day and onward through France until he was "Tour Expired" and returned home. John survived the war. First job was to read all I can about the kit and order a copy of the PSL Book. The result...confusion over the cockpit colours! Airfix would have the aluminium tubing, main bulkhead and armour painted semi gloss black, but others say aluminium and some favour cockpit green. Some say the bubble hood A/C were not the same colours as the earlier car door version. What is the consensus? I understand Hawker used silver on all the earlier aircraft so that tends to favour silver... Before I go much further I need to settle this question! eter
  3. Hi everyone. I've just joined the site and as this is my first Ready for Inspection post, I thought I better make it an RAF subject. It's an Airfix 1:72 Typhoon 1B from No.266 Squadron, 2nd Tactical Airforce, RAF, April/May 1944. The build is out of the box and brush painted with Tamiya acrylics, finished with a Flory wash. Thanks for looking!
  4. All, here is my 1st Ready for Inspection blog--Johnny @The Spadgent got me thinking this would be a good idea. For the forum's consideration I offer up Airfix's Typhoon 1B/Fw-190 Dog Fight Double consisting of Stapleton's Typhoon Mk1B and Priller's Fw-190--almost all kit markings. Special thanks goes out to @G.R.Morrison & @Chris Thomas along with many others from the forum who provided research info on the subjects in the discussions linked below: I would be remiss not thanking @giemme, @The Spadgent, @billn53, @RidgeRunner & @opus999 You guys have been helping me improve for years! Thank you so much--for me you have turned 1/72 scale from outline builds to an art that is fun to build and look at. Tracking all of your awesome builds is both a treat and jaw dropping--I hope you see I am catching up😎. Here are the build links: And now on to the photos--Best to all, Erwin
  5. Hello BM's! A while ago, 2016, I built an Airfix Hawker Typhoon in 1/72 scale and attempted some 'chipping' using maskol and not a lot of common sense as to how it might look! I had some constructive feedback on the forum after sharing the result and retired to the Typhoon to the back of the man cave as a lesson learned. Anyway, whilst creating some room for my latest models, I decided I would either improve the paint job or throw it out, now I have learnt newer techniques and generally improved with the hobby. Anyway, after some close calls with peeling paint and cock ups with the airbrush, here we are: And this is what it looked like before: I am happy with it, there are still some little problems here and there but it now looks a bit more authentic, after studying some colour photos from the period. I achieved most of the 'new' chipping and subtle changes in colour on the panels with a hairy stick, some buffing to remove brush strokes, washes and a good matt coat. Here's some pictures and a couple of the original. As ever, would appreciate any feedback - looks better, right?! 🤞 Cheers all! Oh and the nav light colours are the correct way round this time 🤦‍♂️
  6. Just finished, my take on the very nice Brengun Typhoon (early car-door); DN439, 198 Sqdn, RAF Ouston, Jan 1943 (52) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr DN439, 198 Sqdn, RAF Ouston, Jan 1943 (51) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr DN439, 198 Sqdn, RAF Ouston, Jan 1943 (48) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr DN439, 198 Sqdn, RAF Ouston, Jan 1943 (27) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr DN439, 198 Sqdn, RAF Ouston, Jan 1943 (19) w by Philip Pain, on Flickr This is a Hawker Typhoon 1b, DN439 of 198 Squadron at RAF Ouston, Northumberland in January 1943. The squadron was still working up during their brief three week stay at RAF Ouston, and their intended role was fighter interception. Only later on in 1944 did 198 Squadron become one of the leading exponents of ground attack and close support, using rocket and bomb equipped Typhoons. In early February 1943 198 Squadron moved to nearby RAF Acklington and were declared operational. It was 16th February 1943 on an operational scramble that DN439 swung on takeoff, ground looped and was wrecked. The pilot W/O W.L. Mount was unhurt, but DN439 had lasted barely a month from new. New identification markings for Typhoons had been introduced in December 1942, to try and reduce the number being shot down in mistake for FW190s. Thus the prominent underwing stripes (NOT 'D-Day' markings), yellow uppersurface bands, and black ring around the spinner. My code letter 'E' is not confirmed, but records show that another 'E' served with the squadron, probably arriving not long after DN439 was wrecked, so likely to be a replacement 'E'. The Brengun kit is a very nice 'cottage industry' example, accurate and finely detailed, but like all limited run kits it needs extra work to put together. It contains parts for both early and late Typhoons. The markings were made up from Xtradecal sheets, and the kit's decals were not used.
  7. This model was purchased, and started, in the summer of 1973 from a model shop in Houston, Texas. I spent 7 months in Texas that year, working as an exchange student. In the latter part of 73 and in early 74 I painted the aircraft, including hand painting the RAF markings. Wind forward to the winter of 2017.. when I "returned" to modelling. It seemed a good idea to finish the kit. Is this a record?? It is a basic, not very well detailed kit and completing this one has caused me more problems than almost anything else I've ever made. You can read about some of my trials and tribulations here: Problems with paint incompatibility and colour changes over time mean that repainted much of the aircraft, all by hand, and added the Typhoon underwing stripes at a late stage. Why? Because the kit decals were not usable...so I had to change the final aircraft! The RAF markings are mine, the serial, squadron codes and other details from the TechMod Sheet. So, here it is for inspection. I'm not really satisfied with it, but enough is enough. I thought of adding weathering, but don't want any more issues. From the front.. Now from above.. The "Erks" eye view... it is a big brute. And finally, with the door open and window half down. I know there are faults and omissions...but waiting in the wings is the big 1/24 Airfix Typhoon. The instructions from that were helpful in identifying areas for improvement, including the inner U/C door retracting jack. Let me know what think!!
  8. Hi Fellow Modellers, Just thought I'd share my latest offering, Airfix's 1/72 recently re-tooled Typhoon 1B. Cracking kit no real issues. Next time I'll probably spray the yellow leadig edges.....the decals are a SOB to fit One mistake I made was to fit the launch rails before I'd put on the invasion stripes so it morphed into the 'plain' version you see here. I've often overdone the weathering on my builds(to say the least) so I eased back on this one and I'm quite pleased with the result. Any way here goes(three cheers for Google Photos) Comments and critique most welcome.
  9. I present my first model started and completed this year. I wasn't feeling very inspired by the kit supplied schemes, but then came across the intriguing "Silver Bullet" while browsing through the Airfix Model World supplement on the Typhoon. This was MN666, which after being damaged during the Normandy campaign after D-Day was shipped back to Britain, fixed up, stripped of its paint, except for the rudder, and then used by instructors at the Fighter Leader School. I got some very helpful background from Chris Thomas (http://www.britmodel...+silver +bullet). Completed as she may have looked in 1944. Brush painted Tamiya acrylics. Really enjoyed the build, wasn't intending it to be a quick build but that is how it turned out Must get some more of these for the stash. Build thread can be found here. Thanks for looking.
