  1. #18/2023 My dad´s US naval theme continues, this time with something more modern. Hasegawa´s A-7 kit, first released in 1987, this is the P14 kit from back then. Aires A-7 late seat, TwoBobs decals used which were very thin and tended to wrap and tear. Painted with Gunze H311 FS36622, Gunze H310 FS30219, and Tamiya XF-69 Nato Black. Build thread here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235126917-flying-gecko148-ling-temco-vought-a-7e-corsair-ii-va-22-fighting-redcocks-usn/ Around 1987/88, the CO and XO aircraft of VA-22 were painted in special camouflage. Whereas the CO bird was painted in a greyish camo, the XO one became brownish. At least the CO plane in its new clothes took part in Operation Praying Mantis in April 1988, a clash with the Iranian Navy, don´t know about the XO plane. Later in 1988 "302" wore single grey again. 2. After all the yellow wing subjects, it´s time for some more modern USN stuff. Gonna do a Hasegawa A-7 with TwoBobs decals, representing the XO aircraft of VA-22 in the second half of the 80ies, which received a special livery like the CO. 3. I shall be building this using the Eduard "Striking Eagles" limited edition boxing of Academy plastic, which inludes cockpit and exterior photo etch plus resin seats, wheels and cans. Two Bob's decals for the airframe identity and also perhaps for the stencils. It was hard to choose a specific aircraft from the decal sheet but I like the Twin Towers "Never Forget" logo which was also carried on the port nose. I'm saving my Academy F-15C MSIP boxing for later in the year but also have an Academy "Seymour Johnson" which might make an appearance in this GB - well, plenty of other aircraft to choose from on the decals. Mike
  4. I'm not a big fan of low-viz grey schemes on modern jets. But when the USN celebrated their 100th anniversary back in 2011, they had the brilliant idea to paint a variety of their current aircraft in retro schemes from throughout their history. TwoBobs issued several decal sheets covering these schemes, and I really took a fancy to the three-tone scheme applied to one of the Hornets of VFA-122 "Flying Eagles." Does this scheme look familiar? It sure does to me, although I couldn't tell you which squadron in WWII used these markings. My brain tries to tell me it was on a Hellcat, but it could have been a Corsair. Or something else, I'm afraid my brain is a bit addled. Looking through my stash, it seems I have enough stuff to model this baby. First, the Hasegawa F/A-18C Hornet: I'm sure you are all familiar with this venerable kit. If not, here are the sprues: The "Chippy Ho" scheme, even though there seems to be an eagle on the tail, is actually on a bird from VFA-195 "Dambusters." It's even a bit too gaudy for me! Now, it wouldn't be a Navy Bird build if I didn't leave well enough alone and try to finagle a bunch of aftermarket stuff into the model. Let's see, I have a resin, photoetch, and film cockpit from Aires: And some highly detailed gear bays, also from Aires (lots of pipes in there!): Quickboost provide new intakes and jet engine faces. Of course, the trunking is nowhere near long enough to properly represent the Hornet's intakes, but it's better than what Hasegawa provide. The real intake trunks have to slither their way around the main gear bays - I probably should try harder to find seamless intakes from XMM, but my initial search was fruitless. Ah, what the heck I have these parts from Quickboost so let's use them. And, of course, the decal sheet from TwoBobs printed by Microscale (hey, I remember those guys! Krasel Industries, anyone?). If I recall correctly, TwoBobs put all of their USN Centennial decal sheets into one package, along with a CD full of photos, so you could make all of these cool retro schemes. Too bad the USN had already retired the Tomcat as I think it would have looked very cool in overall Glossy Sea Blue. Or even better, in Blue Angel regalia. I still need to determine if the vertical tails had the reinforcements and the stiffener plates. I believe I have these in the stash, I just don't know if I need to use them. And there is always the possibility that I may want to pose flaps, slats, and elevators. There may be more resin in my future! I've started removing the resin bits from their casting blocks. I have to remove Hasegawa's gear bays, and getting the nose gear bay out of there looks like it will be a bit tricky. Wish me luck! So that's my new project. Unless someone changes my other mind, then it will be something else. Cheers, Bill
  5. as if my backlog would not be big enough already..... but after absolutely not finding anything suitable for 1981, a great F-117 build with the US flag on it this week on BM made me look the Nighthawk up on wikipedia... it had its first flight back then!! yipee! and then I thought of my very first 48th scale plastic model... exactly, Revell's Nighthawk..... and here it is again, this time hopefully to turn out better.... to be done in flight, with a big Skunk on the bottom.... any photos of the real thing out there? -- with the Skunk I mean! did it really exist? and is is still used operationally (the F-117 I mean...) Twobobs did decals some time ago.... boy contents... i have it better quality in my memory....the PE is nice though! wonder how that weapons bay builds up CLOSED....
  6. I've been searching for this Twobobs set for years. I know a few others on here have as well, so thought I'd let everyone know. Www.hannants.Co.uk/product/TB48147 Enjoy. Simon.
  7. Here she is! VF-31's '110', BuNo 519618 as she was at the beginning of OIF in 2003. I used the Hobby Boss 1/48 F-14D, TwoBobs 'Felix in the Fight' decals, Humbrol enamels, W&D Studio pitot and AOA probe, Eduard canopy mask (Godsend!) and a really cheap airbrush. My aspiration was to use as little AM as possible to show what a great kit this is, in my opinion it is superb. It has one or two idiosyncrasies, but still offers a superb amount of value and is a great fitting kit which allows you to make a great looking 'Cat out of the box. I chose not to fill all the rivets, as I don't mid them. I added small touches here and there to improve the kit, but all was done using what's in the modelling box (wire etc). Build thread is HERE
  8. Hi All, This is my first post on BM, but will have many more to come. I pretty much exclusively model 1/48 aircraft, but have been known to dabble in 1/35 armour. I know that 1/72 would solve my storage shelf problems, but I cannot bring myself to do it! I used the excellent TwoBobs Decals for this kit. I will probably begin my foray into 1/72 by building this same aircraft in 1/72 as the decal set comes with 1/48, 1/72 and 1/32 decals. I did add resin cans to the rear end, but didn't do anything with the cockpit. I probably should have as the kit version is very average... maybe next time. This Tamiya model was my first lesson that certain brand name does not necessarily mean excellent quality. After a lot of filler especially around the front end I am quite happy with the result. I think the blue colour is slightly off, but looks good nonetheless. Unfortunately I no longer am in possession of this baby as I sold my whole collection recently in order to move from Australia to Singapore. Looking forward to rebuilding a new collection here! Any and all comments welcomed. Cheers, Arthur.
