Finally...this is the last of my 2019/2020 builds so far. The TU-204 was first flown in 1989 and it was planned and designed to replace the TU-134 and TU-154. It had the latest technology inserted back then and was even offered to the western market with a Rockwell-Collins cockpit and RR 211 engines, like the Boeing 757. The TU-204 can be compared to the Boeing 757 in size. Its not a copy as some may think but it has a slight resemblance to the 757. For some reason,it received not many orders and was build or still is build only in small numbers. Zvezda released both, the passenger version as well as the cargo version of this airliner. Its a wonderfully designed kit with nice detail and perfect parts fit. The attractive livery of Transaero Cargo is probably the most time consuming part of the build. As it was with the MC-21 kit,Zvezda gives wrong numbers for Tamyia paints on their painting guide. They state the underside to be painted with clear orange.I tried that on a sprue and it looked awefully wrong. Photo references showed it more orange/red. I found it with Testors dayglo orange. If painted over the grey of the rest of the fuselage it comes pretty close to the real thing. The grey part is correctly stated. After painting I applied 2 coats of Gunze Aqueous Premium Gloss and another 2 coats after the decals were applied. The decals are superb and provide all nessecary details and stencils. Cheers

For cheatline lovers everywhere and to complete my trio of recent builds I present the Zvezda Tu-204-100 in the old-fashioned, no-nonsense livery previously carried by Air Koryo’s P-633. The real P-633 was built in 2009 for Red Wings but the order was cancelled and after a spell as an engine test bed she joined Air Koryo in 2010. Sadly the cheatline has now gone. In the summer of 2018 Air Koryo repainted their two Tu-204s (P-633 and her -300 comrade P-632) in a boring and ugly “new” livery with a plain red line below the windows and a wavy flag on the tail. This model was on my “waiting to start” list for a while but seeing the superb Cubana Tu-204 by @Malair earlier in the year inspired me to bump it up the queue. Apart from a few small detail additions the build is OOB. The kit is generally up to the standards we’ve come to expect from Zvezda although the nose wheel assembly is a pain and despite the right engine being a perfect fit to the wing attaching the left one was a struggle involving superglue, Milliput, Mr Surfacer, extensive touching up and an end result which does not invite close inspection. I don’t know if the fault was mine or the kit’s but it was weird and caught me out at a late stage of the build. Paint is Halfords Appliance White and Racking Grey with Tamiya metallics. The coroguard on the upper wings and tailplanes, which appears to be unique to the Air Koryo aircraft, is a mix of Tamiya XF16 and XF56, roughly 3:2 but not very precisely. The pattern is “assumed” rather than definitive since I couldn’t find a good overhead view. Decals are by 8A Decs. They are designed for this kit and fitted well. They also include “photo real” windows, perhaps not quite Authentic Airliners standards but effective and welcome nonetheless. Detail decals came from the very decent kit sheet and the spares box. The Zvezda Tu-204 is a fine kit and captures the character of the real aircraft. However it has one serious drawback - the similarity in size and appearance makes it a tantalising glimpse of what a Zvezda Boeing 757 would be like. I suppose we can still dream….. Thanks for looking and as always constructive criticism is welcome. Dave G

I have a great affection for Russian (or Soviet) civil aircraft and the Tupolev 204 is no exception. Bearing a striking resemblance to the 757 (my girlfriend couldn’t tell the difference), the Tu-204 was poised to replace the Tu-154, but due to political and economic turmoil never became successful as Tupolev’s predecessors (although technically there was nothing wrong with the aircraft) I was planning to build the Rus-air version (also a very nice looking kit), but when Zvezda decided to release the Tu-204, I decided to build that version instead. The kit by Zvezda is great (as always) and comes highly recommended. I wanted to build something else than the Red Wings version (you see that livery on Russian forums everywhere) and since I have never had a livery from South America, this seemed like a good opportunity to build something in the colours of Cubana. The decals come from 8a Decs, with some extra details from the Zvezda decal sheet. The cockpit decals are from PAS. You can find the (Dutch) build report here in case you're interested. My next project will be either the Authentic airliners Convair 990 in the last Spantax livery, or the Rus-Air Antonov 24 in Aeorflot colours if that kit arrives sooner than expected. At any rate, thanks for looking and hopefully see you next time!
