Yeah, i'm a kind of "Tornadaholic"! I'm already building a Tonka for the "a kit you built as a kid" GB, now it's time to double the trouble. This is my new poject: a Saudi Gr.1 using the Hobby Boss kit. I know is not the best game in town, but i have this kit in my stash and it's time to build it. With a little help from sme resin bits: aires whell bays and airbrakes, master pitot tube, resim wheels. I'm waiting for eduard's Boz and Sky Shadow and a Print Scale decals sheet to make a saudi aircraft I will use also some parts from an aborted Revell building: in detail, the tailerons, the bulged under-belly pylons and the Hindemburg fuel tanks I would like to replicate this configurations, with eight bombs and the dual bomb racks: does anyone have this spare parts to sell me from an airfix kit? On holiday at home relaxing watching railway drivers eye view video's on & spotted two aircraft parked on an industrial estate in Knutsford - Jet Provost & what appears to be a Hawk, further investigation via Google street view aso shows a Tornado at the same premesis. I have read numerous build threads here and elsewhere on the Revell Tornado kits, but none of them seem to show how perfect (or at least reasonable) inner intake seams were achieved, nor do they explain how. Having started my F.3 I came to the conclusion that intake covers would best be fitted to it, but with another three GR.1/4s and an IDS in the stash I would like to know if - and how - it is possible to get rid of those nasty seams. So, did any of you guys ever succeed in eliminating the intake seams? TIA, Jens

This is the first finish of 2020, a Revell 1/72 Tornado GR1 finished in 1998 17 Sqn colours from Bruggen. Built OOB except for the ubiquitous PJ Productions resin crew mates. Painted with Hataka modern RAF paints. The decals are the stock ones and didn't want to sit very well even on a very glossy surface and with lashings of microsol/microset. However not too displeased with the finished result Base is made from a beechwood kitchen draw front.

So, after quite a few ups and down and some shocking fit issues and terrible instructions here is my tribute to the loss of a modern legend. The kit is the Revell 1/48 GR4 with Eduard cockpit and UK RBF tags, CMK seats, Master pitot tubes and Scratch built TARDIS display and AIM-132 asraams. With apologies to Manfred Mann... 2019 is a sad year as the Tornado is being taken out of RAF service, with any luck they will struggle on in Luftwaffe and Aeronautica Militare service for a couple more years but I have decided to spend 2019 building as many Tornado's as I can keep enthusiasm for as a tribute to this marvellous aeroplane. Born out of the 20 years of procurement failures by all nations concerned, TSR.2, Lockheed Scandal etc etc the Italian, German and British governments set about the MRCA project. Unkindly referred to as 'Must Replace Canberra Again' the Multi Role Combat Aircraft was an attempt to build the love child of the F-111 & TSR.2 but made easier by the fact that Technology was catching up with the aspirations of service users and designers. Designed to be short field, line serviceable (note the very clever engine swap hoists), low running costs and high availability the Tornado has been a sight in European skies for 44 years and in front line service (in Cold and Hot wars) for 37 years. Derided at the time as over complex, over budget, obsolete it has matured and proven to be one of the cheapest per-hour aircraft of any equivalent type. The Eurofighter Typhoon was spawned as a direct result of Tornado and the controversy over the F-35 project seems nothing new when you look back. I will miss them. I have no 'road map' for this project other than to work my way through my stash of 10 1/48 Revell Tornado kits, and multiple decals sheets. I will try to build representatives of each nations versions in service, but probably won't duplicate later types as my appetite for a cabinet of grey jets is limited. As Christopher Lee says at the beginning of "To the Devil a Daughter" 'Perhaps you'd better start at the beginning...' So here we go, using the SyHart decal sheet for 44+61, a 2014 Luftwaffe jet masquerading as the prototype to celebrate 40 years of Tornado... Oh! Please feel free to join in, chip in ideas, point out mistakes etc etc.

Hi All, I don't seem to recall ever posting a W.I.P. on BM, which is very remiss of me, so I thought I'd share my current build - Airfix's 1/48 Tornado GR.1 in the 'Desert Storm' Boxing. It's a kit that doesn't seem to have much of a good reputation. the fit is indeed awful, but so far I've enjoyed it - so much so that I've ordered another GR.1A, a GR.1B, a GR.4 and an F.3... It's been pretty much OOB, with the addition of a PE cockpit, and although I've kept the raised panel lines on this one I have rescribed the missing detail along the seams as I find it's the simplest way of replacing it. On the next build I plan to rescribe the whole lot (and add additional). So that's where I am thus far, I've recently added the guns to the nose and done a bit more filling - Most of this work I'll add, has been done in my car during my lunch breaks. Cheers!

Any thoughts on how to replicate the 'swing wing boots' (I'm sure they have a more technical name) on a 1/48 Tornado? I was thinking of using foil or some such material - The Airfix kit has a rather nasty looking gap aft of the wing that I'd like to try and sort out - I'm not after Mega-accuracy but it's be good to have something.

Hi folks I’ve finished this tonight and have taken photo’s in the garage under LED lighting as it’s way too gusty outside. The story of this started for me as a kid spotting at Boscombe Down during any holiday. I vividly remember the Tornado there and it flying locally and over the ranges at Larkhill. Fast forward to modern times and information becomes available that the aircraft I was watching was XZ630. This was the 12th pre-production aircraft so wasn’t the final build standard. These aircraft were given “P” numbers and thus was known as P.12. The kit - I really only build 1/32 kits so when Revell re-released the kit, the spark happened. I gathered the Airies pit, Airbrake housing and Paragon flaps and slats, finally Paragons access ladder. I started this kit just under a year ago with a 4 month break to do a commission build of a 212. The cockpit was constructed but back dated by removing some switches and putting blank panels in. The ejection seat straps on the front seat were placed over the headbox waiting for an engineer to dive in and start her up. The resin airbrake housing was fitted by cutting out the kit part and fitting the resin replacement. A weather seal was added around the airbrake housing as I noticed it in reference photo’s. The resin exhaust were constructed and fitted but it looks like Airies didn’t plan on you using both as there is interference and the cans needs cut down and moved aft of the airbrake housing. The fin was modified as you’ll notice the lack of fillet below the rudder. The vortex generators were removed as it was clean but later they were retrofitted. I did learn that the RWR housing are different shapes for each country. The kit ones are flared outwards at the extreme tips which are for German aircraft, so these were thinned down for an RAF version. The tailplane leading edges were straightened removing the kink and reprofiling the leading edge. The intakes were modified in that there is a hump profile on the upper surface which was removed on production aircraft. There are also 3 visible vertical struts on the rear of the intake outlet. I scratch built the open panels for the ground power and comms on the lower side, down near the gun ports which you’ll notice have been flushed as this aircraft at the time didn’t have them fitted. The wing glove was a poor fit and the Paragon wasn’t brilliant, so I put backing plastic and on the inside, filled it with Plasto filler and pressed the kit part onto the wet filler. Once it was tacky I used a scalpel and created the groove and let it set. The nose leg was cut down as it’s way to high, giving a distinctly nose up attitude. I wanted something different so I wanted to try Engine ground run guards. So through help on here I managed to get a couple of photo’s and ordered some mesh from “the mesh company”. With my bending tool and purely by eye I knocked up these, which look ok. I then added the strengthening ribs and sprayed then red. The period of the aircraft dictated wrap around camo with the tri-country roundels on the fin. The Antenna colours on the fin are a mottled brown colour which was actually quite easy to replicate. The Fin staining was Tamiya weathering pastels, the Green/Grey is Xtracrylix which was Windsor and Newton gloss varnished then decals applied and then Matt W&N varnished. The artistic license bit is the refuelling probe. This can be fitted with the guards but I couldn’t find a photo of it extended, but I wanted to add that key bit of detail. The access ladder wasn’t used as it was from the wrong period. Photography is not my thing and there’s not much more to be said!. Sorry if I got anyone excited... just wondering if there was any news on this kit which is so obvously coming based on the internal frames in the GR.4 & IDS kits. If nothing else maybe a lot of interest in this thread will make Revell pull their finger out?

Well after nearly as much indecision and prevaricating as the Brexit debate (no I'm NOT getting involved!) I have finally decided to join in with a subject which is very much in the spotlight at the moment, albeit for the worst possible reason (it's retirement) I have decided to go with a Panavia Tornado using the recent 1/48 Revell IDS kit, so here are the usual pics of the box and it's contents starting with the box top of Revell's God awful end opening effort; Nice box art, now for the actual plastic showing that all the parts are neatly wrapped in their original packaging; Revell's decal sheet is very well printed and looks to be of excellent quality but I really wish they would stop with the special schemes and give us some good old fashioned politically incorrect front line aircraft in their proper warpaint. When I opened the box I got a nice surprise in the form of a separate plastic bag put into the box (no doubt by it's original owner as I bought it second hand) which contained these resin goodies which should help with the build; All very nice I hear you say but how does this tie in with the criteria of this GB? Well maybe these next pictures will help alleviate your fears..... Nice decals you say, I hope so as some of them are nearly as old as me but hopefully work better, but your'e still not completely convinced, well how about these whizz bangs to hang under the Tonka? Getting better? And yes they are a set of wing seals by one of our very clever members, but if you still haven't pieced everything together yet then here she comes!!!!! Oh Yes!! Isn't she a thing of beauty! A Marineflieger IDS of MFG 1 in the original delivery scheme, stick a couple of Kormorans under the belly of the beast and you have the best Baltic Bolshevik botherer ever! Well that's my opinion any way. And just in case my MFG 1 decals go terribly wrong then I have some slightly more modern ones for MFG 2 in the 3 colour scheme that they wore and carried HARM missiles for killing radars making them SEAD aircraft, as is this Italian ECR which I also have decals for; Well hopefully she meets with the approval of our glorious leader @trickyrich and I shall make a start later this week. This has a bit of a family connection so finally got round to building it. My Dad was on the Squadron and brought the Tornado GR1 into service with them back around 1982 at RAF Marham. I left the RAF in 1995 from 617 Sqn at RAF Lossiemouth...... Revell 1/72 OOB with only aftermarket decals used.

Wich is the best available Luftwaffe Tornado today in 1/72 scale? Is it the Revell? Or can the Italeri match the Revell kit? Cheers!

HELP...anyone! I have a copy of Xtradecal X004-32, Tornados for the RAF. I want to use the decals/transfers for ZD790, Debbie/Mig Killer But I've lost the printed instructions/guide. Can anyone help me with a copy? Peter

Hi Guys, this is my first build post here. I finished this yesterday I have build photos so not sure wether to make a post with those on. But here is my attempt at the 1/32 Revell GR.1 Gulf war kit. I added the Flightpath flaps and slats and Resin Speed brakes. I used Alclad Mil spec Desert Pink paint and Flory wash. With Vallejo paints used else where. I haven't built a plastic plane like this for at least 8 yrs as have been busy on Wooden ships. I will post one soon. Here are the pics. Thanks for looking. Chris

I am far from an expert on Tornadoes, and I've found in my stash the Airfix GR.4/GR.4A kit. This has some pretty old looking parts for the majority of the airframe, and what is clearly a couple of sprues of newer parts to add on to make the GR4/4A version. From everything I have read, the Revell GR1 is by far the best option for a Tornado in 1/72, so my question is... Is it a viable option to use the newer Airfix parts to convert the Revell GR1 to a GR4? Is there any advice anyone can offer on things to look out for if I go down this route? Are there are any other changes I'd need to make to the Revell kit, besides adding the various parts from the Airfix kit? The other option is to simply build the Revell kit as is, possibly as an Op Granby aircraft, but I'd quite like to convert it to a GR4 and use a Model Alliance Op Telic decal sheet I seem to have acquired years ago and forgot all about.

North American Aviation B-45 Tornado Warpaint No.118 Guideline Publications The B-45 was a product of late WWII developed when the US were alarmed by the Arado Ar-234 Jet Bomber, as such the use of swept wings had not been brought in yet and it was a straight winged design with twin podded engines. While a lot of projects were cancelled post war the US chose to keep with the design as future projects were still to far away, however production was limited due to USAF budget cuts to only 142 aircraft. The design did have issues mainly with the engines and it did not look good. However US involvement in Korea and the development of smaller Nuclear Weapons lead to their use in Europe as part of the deterrence structure. At the same time the RB-45 was developed as a strategic reconnaissance platform with 33 being built. These all being assigned to the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. Originally flying from Japan to supplement their RB-29s which were easy targets for MiG-15s over Korea. These flew daylight missions until one was lost to a MiG-15, then they were switched to night missions. As well as these missions they would conduct over flights of the USSR until this was stopped the President. The radar data was still needed of targets in the USSR for SAC bombers and in 1951 in 1951 4 aircraft were "leased" to the RAF. These American aircraft suitably adorned with RAF markings and RAF crews would then fly missions from RAF Sculthorpe. The RB-45 was then replaced by the Canberra as the RB-45 could only achieve 36,000 Feet which was within the capabilities of Soviet Fighters where as the Canberra could reach 54,000 Feet. Today two B-45's survive in museums and only one RB-45. Conclusion The Warpaint series always gets a thumbs-up due to their inability to produce a dud! They are always well written and informative with a wealth of picture and profiles, this edition also having 1/72 scale plans at the centre. Very highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of

The great outdoors beckoned a little bit more than usual this year what with the glorious weather & a couple of decent airshows drew me away from the workbench. Also my modelling mojo or lack of seems to keep me away from the plastic fettling way too much. I'm also glad that I invested in a half decent airbrush, but still need more practice! Well here's my evidence that I do finish models! Taking one back to a more exciting time for plane spotters, particularly in East Anglia. Skylarks singing to the sunshine to break the silence over Honington after a couple of other Tornados did a touch and go; warm grass smell drifting over the fence, blue skies lighting up the apron. ZA407 sits between sorties as the RAF trains crews for its 10 operational Tornado squadrons.
