Just completed this one today, my take on PO Jack Bartle's "Nan". This was a pretty fun build, not only my first ever Airfix P40/Tomahawk, but also my first ever RAF variant. The upper and lower cowl bits needed some fitting and filler, nothing terrible though. I broke the control stick, which seems to be a rite of passage with this kit. Some Tamiya extra thin got it whole again. Miraculously, I didn't knock off the gun barrels, antenna or pitot! Paints are Vallejo Model Air, decals are a mix of Eaglecals and the kit decals, and I added a Master external gun sight. The exhausts and 50 cal barrels were drilled out. I cut the seat down to a square back, added Eduard belts, scratched out the rear view mirror and gunsight in the cockpit, and added the bullet resistant panel behind the windscreen. I separated the canopy from the windscreen with a razor saw, wanting to position the canopy open. It fit fine, until the rear side glass was installed. I spent, at minimum, an hour last night with sanding sticks and polishing pads thinning the canopy from the inside so it sat in the open position better. Probably would have been easier to use a vacform canopy, but this turned out ok. Weathering was done with oils and Tamiya Weathering Master, and the brake lines were made from 32 gauge beading wire. I went for a dusty, but not battered look, which I attempted with Mission Models translucent dust, thinned, and sprayed from directly above. The effect is subtle and hard to photograph. I probably could have done a couple things better, but it will display fine. I wasn't satisfied with the exhaust staining, I toned it down with some gray after the photos were done. Thanks for looking in on this one, feedback is always welcome.

I didn't think that I would be able to do this group build as we were away for Christmas. However, plans changed and we got back last night. This gives me the next Superhero option to go. Unfortunately, I did not get all the right paints to do what I wanted so scrabbled through the stash to pull out an Airfix Tomahawk IIb in desert colours. Might not be as challenging as some previous builds but let's go. No idea where the box went, but the bag is sealed. Music is Thomas Bergerson's Humanity Chapter 1, to be followed by 2,3 and 4. Should keep me going. Lemur kicking off at 13:37

Hi all Really enjoyed making the Airfix Tomahawk. Recently descovered my Frog decals for a Flying tigers P 40B Only I have one side painting instruction and no decscription of colours. I thought of Humbrol 30 dark green and humbrol 29 dark earth for above and Revell 59 duck egg green for below. Can I improve on this in enamel paints? For those of you bewilded or need of revision: Gen. Clair Lee Chennault's American Volunteer Group took delivery of just 90 P 40Bs to fight the Japanese invasion of China. Thanks in anticipation for any links/paint suggestions. M.M.

Hello Everyone... Fresh out of the P-40 STGB. I present an 1/72 Airfix Tomahawk. I have built it to represent a 3 Squadron RAAF Tomahawk in Palestine summer of 1941. Not a bad kit i can see more of these in my future. Without to much discussion i present my build to you. Please feel free to ask questions, comment, and or give your thoughts. Here is a link to the build if anyone would like to take a look. Dennis

Hello everyone... Quick question concerning RAF Tomahawks ? On Hurricanes and Spitfires the RAF used doped linen to cover over the gun openings. How did they handle the exposed .303 barrels wing guns and .50 cal. nose guns on Tomahawk ? Did they wrap the barrel or just the tip, or did they not cover these guns at all on Tomahawks ? Thank you in advance for any help ? Dennis

Hi All and Seasons Greetings, My latest build is an Airfix 1/72 Tomahawk built virtually OOB apart from new wing gun barrels from 0.5mm brass tubing and some aerial wires from fishing line. This was a nice build with no major problems, bought it at Aldi about four years ago. The Azure and Dark Earth is Vallejo Model Air and the Middlestone is AmmoMig acrylic. some pastels and dilute colours were used for weathering. The photos unfortunately show how my canopy masking sucks đȘ Constructive comments welcome as usual !!! Next up Hasegawa SH-60B

I am a bit stuck as there seems to be a pattern used on the P-40's that went to China and those sent to North Africa. Although I always thought a batch meant for China landed up with 112 sqn. Lastly there seems to be a variation from the P-40E (Kittyhawk). I would be grateful for any help and accurate 3 view drawings.

At the start of this year, one of my goals was to do comparison builds. I think it will make me do more kits and reduce the ever growing, multiplying exponentially stash that, frankly, it just out of control. I do not know how these things happen. (Perhaps build one kit a month, buy 5, maybe?) Anyway, this group build seems like the perfect place to start. Plans are to complete comparison builds of the 1/32 He 219 (Revell & ZM), 1/32 Mustang (Tamiya, Trumpeter, ZM), 1/48 Me 410 (Meng & Revell), 1/32 Skyraider (ZM & Trumpeter), 1/32 Me 163 Komet (Hasegawa & Meng) and 1/72 Sunderland (Airfix & Italeri). In the stash at the office, (Yes, the stash is so out of control, I have two one at the office and another in a storage shed) I found the ProModeler P-40 E Warhawk and the Academy Tomahawk IIb , both in 1/48. Both of these kits are reissues. The ProModeler kit was originally issued in 1978 by Revell. The Revell kit was redone as a ProModeler kit with the box instructions having a 1995 copyright mark. The Academy kit was originally produced by HobbyCraft in 1996 as a Pearl Harbor Defender. This Academy kit was reissued in 2011 with updated decals for Aces of the African Front. The Academy kit will be done as the mount of Pilot Officer Neville Duke as every P-40 collection should have a shark mouth! And, in my opinion, the shark mouths of the 112 Squadron are far more aggressive looking than the AVG versions. The ProModeler kit will receive aftermarket decals. The kit decals look fine, but they are a little aged and yellowed. And since I have an abundance of AM decals for the P-40 (how did I acquire so many?) the Cutting Edge âColorful Warhawks Part 1â will donate the scheme for an Aleutiansâ tiger scheme. The obligatory sprue shots. First Academy. Then ProModeler And the build will begin next.

My entry for this GB. The P-40 Tomahawk IIb 'Ace of African Front' boxing from Academy. Review here at IMPS. A bit of background: This build will depict AK402, GA-F, 112 Squadron. This aircraft was flown by Pilot Officer Neville Duke, based at Fort Maddelena in Libya, November 1941. Neville Duke was one of the highest scoring Allied aces, with 27 kills by the warâs end. While flying AK402, Duke was shot down on Nov 30, 1941 by Otto Schulz of 4/JG27. He belly landed safely. Inside the box are three sprues of gray plastic, a clear one for the transparent canopy parts, the instructions and a decal sheet with four options. I'll use also AML's interior conversion, Ultracast early P-40 Seat with Sutton Harness, Ultracast Tubular Exhausts and Eduard's Canopy Mask. Now i've to await eagerly the D-day.
